Introductions
Mulder and Scully are waiting near Simon's parents house. It is past noon. They watch as Charlotte hangs clothes on the line on the side of the house. Scully says, "She's got to be exhausted being that pregnant."
Mulder says, "Maybe, some women have very little pregnancy side effects. They will work a job up to the day they give birth, I heard of one woman who continued rock climbing well into her second trimester."
They watch a man walk up to the house. Mulder says, lowering his voice, "That's Simon's father Stephen." He walks into the side yard and hugs Charlotte.
Scully says, "Odd time to be home during the day."
Mulder says, "Probably works nearby and comes home for lunch. I wish I knew how we were supposed to do this thing. Maybe once we can figure it out we can tell them to tell me when they meet me."
Scully says, "I don't think that's allowed." Mulder looks at her oddly. "It's like in Back to the Future, Doc tells Marty it's dangerous to know too much about your own future. Which in this case, you telling them about the future could scare them, causing them to make sure they never meet you and mess up your past and future."
Before Mulder can reply they hear the Doctor say, "Time is like that, all wibbly and wobbly." They turn to look and see The Doctor and Rose behind them.
Rose has two small bags with her and hands them one, "We stopped off at the TARDIS and got sandwiches." They eat their sandwiches while watching the house.
As they finish, Mulder asks, "So how do we do this?"
The Doctor says, "We could act as salesmen. Door to door sales are fairly common in this era so it wouldn't look out of place to randomly knock on their door, although there would never be four salespeople at once. I guess we could say two of you are in training but then what would we be selling? How much are we selling for? How many of that item would they get if purchased? Too many details, it would just get confusing. "
Rose says, "Doctor, you are rambling again. I know, we could say we were exploring the area and we've gotten lost an' ask for directions, like maybe directions back to that old church. Then keep them talking."
The Doctor says, "Brilliant! We'll say we are travelling and must have missed a turn somewhere to get back to our vehicle." They see Stephen exit the house "Best if we do this now. Think of a fake name Agent Mulder." The four of them walk across the road as Stephen steps on to the sidewalk.
Mulder says, "Excuse me, sir. We seem to have lost our way. We were exploring the area and can seem to find our vehicle. We parked near an old church."
Stephen says, "You're not far from the church, mate. Just turn round, go to the end of the street, turn left, then left again three streets over. You'll not miss the church. Not really sure what reason you'd want to explore Beckley though."
The Doctor says, "We've taken to trying to see as much outside of London we can whenever we have a few days off from the hospital."
Stephen says, "Are you all doctors?" There is a moment of silence, a rustling of leaves nearby can be heard.
The Doctor says, "Only two of us, I'm Dr. John Smith, this is my fiance Rose." The Doctor grabs Rose's hand as he speaks. Rose blushes.
Scully says, "I'm Dr. Dana Scully."
Mulder hesitates for just a second while making sure to say a fake name says, "I'm David Jones, reporter for the London Times, as well as Dana's boyfriend." Mulder puts an arm around Scully's shoulders.
Before Stephen can reply the door of his house opens, Charlotte steps out and yells, "Stephen, it's time. The baby's coming."
Stephen looks back at the house to his wife, then turns back quickly and says, "You said two of you are doctors? Our midwife's out of town. The baby's not due for two more weeks. Can you help us?"
Scully says, "Of course. The four of them follow Stephen up the driveway and into the house. They look around the room they are in, it seems to be a living room or sitting room. There is a decorative rug on the floor. Along one wall is a sofa, along another is a bookcase about half full of books. Next to the bookcase is a small table with a record player sitting on top of it, under the table is a wooden crate of records. There is also a leather chair in the room.
Charlotte turns to Stephen and notices the four people who had followed him inside says, "It's no time for makin' friends Stephen. The baby is coming, the contractions have started."
Stephen says, "These two are doctors." He indicates to the Doctor and Scully.
Charlotte eyes them and says, "And you just found doctors in the street, just before I yelled for you." She breathes heavily. "That's another contraction."
Mulder says, "Just a coincidence, ma'am. We took a wrong turn getting back to our vehicle. We were just asking your husband for directions."
Charlotte says, "Maybe the universe sent you then. Our midwife had an emergency and had to go out of town for a few days. We thought we would be alright, the baby is not due for another two weeks."
Scully says, "How long have you been having contractions, ma'am."
Charlotte says, "I've had off and on cramping all morning. Just mild until these last ones. My name is Charlotte, Dr?"
Scully says, "Dr. Dana Scully."
Stephen says, "Do you deliver babies regularly?"
Scully replies, "No, but I've done it before. A few during medical school, and few in the last couple of years. I mostly do A&E. Usually when a pregnant woman comes in there is a midwife available to take them."
Stephen says, "What about you Dr. Smith?"
The Doctor says, "It's been a while for me, I specialize in neurology. Disorders of the brain and brain surgery." Charlotte starts breathing heavily again.
Scully says, "Was that another one?" Charlotte nods, Scully continues, "Ok, I will need clean towels, hot water, scissors, pillows, and thread."
Rose says, "I'll get the water. Is the kitchen through the door there?" She points to a door on the opposite side of the room."
Stephen says, "Yes and I'll get the pillows and towels." Rose and Stephen both leave the room.
The Doctor says, "I've got scissors and thread in one of these pockets." He reaches into his right pocket and pulls out a pair of scissors and a spool of thread."
Scully looks to Charlotte and says, "Where would you like to deliver?" Charlotte looks around the room.
Charlotte says, "I think the floor would be best." Scully helps Charlotte get down into the floor. Stephen comes back with the pillows and towels. He sets them down next to Charlotte. Scully places the pillows behind Charlotte's back to provide some support. "You're American right, you and Mr. Jones? How'd you end up here?"
Scully responds, "My father was in the American Military, when I was around 15, in the middle of the second world war he was stationed in London. Rather than leave us behind he moved the family to London. After the war, my parents chose to remain. I never really lost the American accent."
Mulder says, "I only came to London a few years back. Didn't have any family left in the States. Figured I might as well travel. I was in London for a week when I met Dana and decided to stay. I got a job and a flat the next week and never looked back."
Charlotte says, "For you two to find each other across the world, it means you are meant to be." She moans out in pain with another contraction. "Me and Stephen met here in Beckley. It was at my uncle's neighborhood cookout."
