Chapter 45 - Accepting the Inevitable
A/N: I do not own the Naruto Franchise!
I do however own Mari Kaede and any other OCs mentioned.
Warnings: Contains dark themes, such as depression, murder, experimentation, emotional, mental and physical torture, possible attempted suicide and mentions of sexual activities!
At this point, I also want to point out that the relationship between these two characters is actually toxic if you are in a similar situation please seek help, it is not healthy and it won't end the same way this story will end.
I do not condone these kinds of relationships, despite writing this story.
Hey guys, I finally got this chapter finished at long last, I've been feeling really unmotivated to write recently, so this was a real struggle to finish, but I'm glad I managed to get it written to a decent quality at least!
The next chapter might take a while since I have to plan the next five chapters before I start writing them, so please be patient with me.
Other than that, I hope you enjoy!
Night fell across the usually hot savannah Kaede called home, the wind wisped through the tall grass as she laid atop the natural stone structure that hid the staircase down to Otogakure. Her hands were resting behind her head as her eyes fixed on the dark sky above, littered with blinking stars and a bright, half-visible moon that cast a dim light down onto their large, expansive world.
The redhead let out a sharp sigh, closing her eyes with knitted brows as she thought over the past two weeks since the night she engaged in intimate acts with Orochimaru. Over that time, she had done everything in her power to avoid him, only going to collect her missions during the early hours of her day, and when she had to report back after a mission. any other time she would actively leave a room if he entered, just to keep the regret she felt from settling in the pit of her stomach.
Of course, with that avoidance and the mere thought of any form of sexual intimacy leading her to feel that regret, the sparks of desire that had re-ignited within her had become unbearable once again, and like before, she refused to do anything about it. Of course, she did try to alleviate the discomfort herself once when it became too much to handle, but every time she tried that bastard Sannin would pop into her mind and she would be forced to stop because of her own sense of stubborn pride. In her mind, accepting those desires a second time, and succumbing to them would mean she gave up and would be willing to forgive him for his actions, resulting in her hatred whittling away, leaving her empty of any form of emotion that connected her to her previous life.
'If it'd been anyone else, I wouldn't be this bothered by it...' She thought bitterly, sneering at the clear skies above. But because it was Orochimaru, the reason she was an outcast, to begin with, any interactions she had with him hurt more than she thought possible.
With a sharp curse, she raised her head slightly to remove one of her arms from behind it, then rested back on the other as she used the free limb to cover her eyes, pressing on them with her forearm as she tried to block out her own thoughts. Unaware that beneath her, a figure had left the cold, dark hideout to search for her.
"Hey."
Kaede jumped slightly from the sudden, loud call of a young teen and sat up, looking down to see Sasuke staring at her from the grassy ground below, annoyed that she had taken so long to answer. She wondered how he knew she was there, to begin with, but then remembered that she had hung her feet over the edge of the stone surface earlier when she was sat up, reading, so instead of speaking those curious words out loud, she just rolled her eyes. "What d'you want, kid?"
Sasuke's eyes narrowed at her nonchalant use of the term 'kid' but brushed it off, as arguing with her was not worth his limited training time. "Orochimaru told me to come and get you, so get a move on."
Kaede scoffed and glared at the young teen. "Tell that asshole I've already completed my missions for the day, and if he wants me t'come down, I'll be there when I feel like it!"
"Hurry up, I haven't got all night."
Kaede shot the young Uchiha child a glare as he closed his eyes and sauntered back into the hideout with his hands stuffed into his pockets. "It's official..." She said quietly as picked up her book and stood stretching her arms out over her head with a yawn. "I hate that brat almost as much as I hate Specs." She let out a sigh and looked back up at the powerful, bright moon overhead, staring at its simple, yet detailed image up in the dark expanse of the sky.
Saying that...Sometimes she wondered if she was making things harder for herself by keeping such a strong, life-absorbing hatred so close to her chest.
The stubborn kunoichi shook her head, clicking her tongue in response to her own thoughts. She needed to stop worrying about every single thing she did or said, otherwise, it would finally drive her over the teetering edge of insanity. "Better go see what that senile old man wants now..." She grumbled, hopping down from the rock and landing carefully on the dirt ground below.
Without saying another word, or letting herself think for even a second, she turned and went inside.
It did not take her long to get to Orochimaru's study, having made the trek so much that the directions were pretty much engraved in her memory, like the carving of the snake on the door. She did not even bother knocking when she heard the voices of her 'leader' and his prodigy inside, and instead opened the door suddenly and rudely, arching a brow when she was met with not only the two in question but Kabuto as well, all standing and staring at her.
Orochimaru's curious frown turned to a smirk as he rested his cheek on his knuckles. "It's about time you joined us Kaede..." He started, his tone teasing as usual as he lifted his head off his hand and leaned back in his throne. "I was beginning to think I had to come out there and drag you down here myself~!"
"Hah! Like you could drag me anywhere!" She stated boldly, shutting the door with a little more force than usual, grinning up at his confident form. "I ain't weak, I'd kick your ass with no problems!"
"Oh? Shall I recount the win-to-lose ratio of our sparring sessions, hm?"
"Who said I wasn't going easy on y'this whole time?"
Sasuke let out a huff of irritation, tucking his hands in his pockets with a childish pout and closed eyes. "Would you just get on with the meeting? Your flirting is starting to get on my nerves!"
Kaede opened her mouth to protest, but Kabuto surprised her by beating her to it. "You must be quite delusional to believe Orochimaru-sama would lower himself to cavort with someone such as Kaede." He said simply, pushing his glasses up his nose while the redhead in question bit back a laugh at the rather incredulous expression on Orochimaru's face as if he himself found Kabuto's statement a little foolish.
However, sadly Kabuto never got the chance to see that expression as Orochimaru took over the conversation once again. "Putting the idle chatter aside, it's time I told you why I summoned you here without prior notice."
"About time..." Sasuke remarked.
Orochimaru shot him a warning glare that usually put the fear of God into any Genin, but instead was shrugged off as if his gaze was nothing more than a feather that had landed on his shoulder. This both amused and irritated the power-mad Sannin, who chose to continue on, rather than punish his rebellious words. The prodigy had a different set of rules than the sacrifices, after all. "According to a reliable source you needn't concern yourselves with, Ishigakure has obtained some very valuable Kinjutsu scrolls during a difficult mission that has left their forces depleted..."
"Let me guess..." Kaede started, crossing her arms as she tilted her head to the side and arched a brow. "Y'want us t'go to Ishigakure and get y'those scrolls?"
"Hm, hm, how your wit has sharpened since we met." Orochimaru teased her, planting his chin on the back of his hand. "But yes, the three of us will infiltrate the village and steal said scrolls without alerting their forces..." He glanced at Kabuto. "In my absence, Kabuto will be left in charge of the village. If any of my subordinates opt to complain over my decision, dispose of them immediately."
Kabuto bowed his torso, smirking darkly behind the veil of his fringe. "Yes, Orochimaru-sama."
The sinister older man nodded and stood up, walking down the steps in front of his throne, before flashing Kaede an amused grin, which just confused the hell out of her. "I look forward to seeing who you disguise yourself as this time, Firecracker~!"
"Eh?" The redhead uncrossed her arms with a lost look plastered across her tanned features. "Why the hell d'we need t'wear disguises?" She asked, hating the idea of having to perform that annoying jutsu a second time. "It ain't like we're going t'get caught or anything!"
"Regardless, precautions will be put in place to ensure we won't need to abandon this hideout like the last one." He placed a hand on his waist and shrugged his shoulder, his other hand outstretched like usual. "After all, why bother collecting scrolls if we were forced to leave them behind?" He chuckled and arched a brow, challenging her. "I expect you to perform your duties well, do not disappoint me."
"Heh, I ain't some bratty Genin!" She could feel Sasuke glaring at her from that comment, but ignored it, planting both hands on her hips proudly. "Y'know I'm a master of infiltration, right?"
"Oh? Was it just a coincidence that you were spotted on your last mission to Sunagakure?"
The woman's grin faltered and turned to a scowl, scoffing at him for making such a remark. "Tch, y'weren't even there, don't make jokes 'bout things y'don't understand!"
"I believe you have me mixed up for someone else, dear Kaede." The Sannin's shoulders were shaking with his laughter at this point. "I understand anything and everything, there isn't a single detail of your life that I am not aware of..." His smirk remained, but he opted to change the subject, otherwise they would continue this banter for hours to come, she was such an entertaining little pawn. "Now, prepare for the mission, we must leave within the hour if we wish to make it by nightfall. Don't keep me waiting~!"
Kaede's anger warped into a malicious grin as she turned and opened the door. "I think y'have me mixed up for someone too, Snake-Eyes~!" She looked at him over her shoulders, mirth-filled brown orbs matching his own yellow ones. "I ain't some lazy ass that doesn't understand how t'be on time!" With that, she stepped out of the door and waved without turning back, leaving Orochimaru to give Sasuke an in-depth plan on how they would proceed.
While walking down the corridor, Kaede felt her heart pound in her chest as her wide smile spread to almost painful levels. Deep down, she was actually pretty excited for this mission. With her frustrations and confusion stacking up on her shoulders, it'd be nice to get out and think about something else for a while. Even if that involved killing a few shinobi to get some scrolls for her asshole of a leader.
At this point, she welcomed any distraction.
The hour passed with relative ease and in the end, Orochimaru and Sasuke were stood outside wearing their disguises. Sasuke was a young teen with long blond hair, similar to his own in style, and green eyes with freckles dappled across the bridge of his nose. The Sannin himself was disguised similarly to how he was during the Chuunin exams. It's not like anyone would recognize those yellow eyes with purple accents or anything.
Oh no, his disguise was fool-proof.
"Ugh, it ain't fair that I have t'wear this uncomfortable mask again..." A familiar voice echoed from the staircase. Both males turned to see Kaede step out of the hideout, her hair long and shocking red as it fell over one of her green eyes. Her skin was dark and littered with lighter scars, covering the entirety of her body, including her face. Out of the three of them, she looked the least like she usually did. With a huff, she moved the hair out of her eye, then shot Orochimaru a glare as she let it fall back into place. "Hey, why d'you get t'wear the same disguise twice?!"
"Hm, hm, I'm not wearing the same disguise..." He stated simply, arms behind his back. "Any ninja worth their salt would see that."
Kaede stepped closer and squinted as she looked over his face, getting a bit too close so she could see what was so different. He had very slight cheekbones and a mole under his lip, but that was it.
"You arrogant, self-loving bastard."
His dark, raspy laughter rung in the air as he arched a brow at her obvious distaste towards him. "It isn't arrogance if it's the truth, Kaede-chan~!"
Kaede scoffed and stepped around him, walking on ahead so she could get away from his presence, being that close to him, even if it was just to inspect his differing appearance, made her heart race ever so slightly, and she'd be damned if she fell for his charms, after all, she had done to avoid him.
With their little interaction coming to a close, the three set off towards Ishigakure.
~BHBL~
It took just over twenty-four hours for the three to reach Ishigakure, and now night had fallen over the small village that had recently dropped in numbers. Orochimaru, Kaede and Sasuke were hidden in the brush near the entrance to the settlement, and Orochimaru was using his snakes to scout the area for any lookouts. It did not take him long to find two shinobi stood by the large gates, yawning and chatting among themselves while on duty.
Orochimaru looked back at Kaede, and she nodded, knowing his plans since he told her while they traveled. The two Jounin class ninja quickly dove into the trees above their heads, using the branches to silently make their way behind the two guards. Without giving the two time to notice them, they dropped from the trees and Orochimaru grabbed one by the neck, while Kaede stabbed the other through the heart, covering his mouth to stop him screaming and alerting the others.
With a sickening snap and a pair of thuds, the lookouts hit the floor, dead. "Well, that was easy." The redhead whispered in a dull tone, taking the arms of the body she killed while the Sannin at her side did the same, both of them dragging the bodies back to the bushes Sasuke was hiding inside, waiting for their signal.
"It'll only get more difficult from here, don't lose your concentration."
Kaede rolled her eyes. She had to admit, she felt herself getting restless, the accounted travel time was only making her frustrations worse, and now she felt aggression rising within her whenever she was spoken to. It was taking everything in her power to keep her cool and stick to the plan. "Y'need t'stop telling me that, I ain't a kid, I know what I'm doing!"
"Then silence yourself!"
Kaede's teeth clenched together tightly as the three of them slipped into the village undetected, moving in the shadows like true masters of the ninja arts. She was getting sick of his patronizing tone and immovable orders. Last thing she needed right now was him whispering aggressively in her ear.
Ugh, she wished this was not a stealth mission, it would be nice to vent her irritation on someone, at least.
After slipping into the main building holding all the village's secret scrolls and killing up to three shinobi just to reach their destination, the three pinned themselves to the wall just around the corner of the guarded entrance to the information center. Kaede and Orochimaru peeked out, Kaede less-so, as her hair was rather noticeable at the best of times. "Don't move," Orochimaru whispered from above her head, eyes fixed around the corner. "There are guards at the door..."
"Would y'stop telling me what t'do?" Kaede hissed out, glaring up at him, which he reciprocated with an obvious warning just emanating from his form. This only pissed Kaede off further, and in a foolish act of impulsive recklessness, she decided she would go against his words. "I ain't your puppet, and I ain't going t'wait here for their shifts t'change before y'make a move!"
Orochimaru's entire body tensed in surprise as Kaede ducked out from behind the corner, using Shunshin no Jutsu to disappear from sight, appearing once again hidden behind a large air conditioning unit near the door. 'You fool!' He thought sharply as one of the ninjas glanced over when he heard a shuffling sound and saw the smoke remnants of her Shunshin.
"Hey..." He started, getting the other's attention as he pointed at the unit. "Is that supposed to be smoking like that?"
"What d'ya mean?" The other asked, scratching his arm as he walked towards the object in question. "It's not that old, so it shouldn't be doin' anything..." Kaede held her breath as the footsteps grew closer and in a split second, time stood still as she raised her hands to Shunshin away, realizing her mistake, only to be caught by the approaching guard before she could even start her signs.
After that, everything was a blur of movement and loud cries for assistance. The first guard to speak quickly ducked away and evaded as he went to get help, while the other dove back as Kaede lunged forward with a kunai, effectively dodging her sudden assault. Within a minute, other ninja rushed to the scene and the reckless redhead was surrounded by enemies. "Ah, shit!" She cursed, quickly forming seals. "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
Large plooms of smoke burst forth around her, and three clones of herself appeared. Orochimaru put his arm out to stop Sasuke as he went to assist her. "This is her fault, let her atone for her mistakes..." The leader's eyes were narrow and anger burned on his disguised features.
This would be her punishment.
Three of the shinobi pulled out weapons and rushed forward, with Kaede's clones diving into the fray, using her barely passing Taijutsu to hold them off, while Kaede herself squared up with the guard who spotted her. The two immediately formed signs at nearly the same speed, with the veteran kunoichi winning out. "Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu!"
With a deep inhale, she breathed out a large fireball, but the other shinobi just huffed and grinned as he finished his own seals. "Suiton: Suirō no Jutsu!"
Suddenly, the water cooler nearby burst open and Kaede gasped, barely spitting out a curse before the body of water consumed her form and submerged her in a dense prison made of the one liquid she could not come into contact with. Bubbles spilled from her mouth as she had not gotten the chance to hold her breath prior, and she tried to move her hands into formation to use her Futon, but the density of the water made it near impossible for her to budge an inch.
This is when two of the other shinobi were killed by her clones, while the other dissipated at the hands of the only other remaining ninja. Orochimaru's eyes widened so much, the veins around his iris became visible, and he felt a possessive anger rise through his body like the hot sun against his back. Using the amazing speed and co-ordination that gave him the Sannin name, he dove out from behind the wall and tossed a kunai at the shinobi who had fought her clone, killing him instantly as the blade dug deep into the back of the man's skull.
Without giving the other a chance to acknowledge his presence, a snake shot out of Orochimaru's outstretched sleeve and tangled around the Suiton user's neck, choking him out until he collapsed, rendering the water prison unstable, before it burst altogether, dropping Kaede to the floor like a fish out of water, choking and sputtering as she took in deep lungfuls of air.
"Do you see what happens when you disobey my orders?" He hissed at her, turning to Sasuke as the Ninjutsu expert just stared at the floor, realizing the error of her ways. "The mission has failed, we will retreat...NOW!"
Kaede wiped her chin as she got to her feet and the three of them made a quick escape, attempting to avoid all the ninjas that were rushing to the information center to see what the commotion was all about. After all of that work, and no rewards, they managed to slip away as silently as they had entered, leaving nothing but a crushed leaf and a pile of bodies behind.
~BHBL~
The only sound that could be heard through the deep woods was the crackling of fire as Orochimaru, Sasuke and Kaede made camp in the deep undergrowth. The mission had failed, and on top of that, Kaede's clothes and body were soaked to the bone. Orochimaru had been forced to send Sasuke away for patrol duties while he stayed behind and ordered Kaede to remove her clothing by the fire to dry herself off. Now she was sat there wearing Orochimaru's blanket for decency, while the flames slowly dried her shivering body.
Of course, despite her saying she was fine now, he refused to give her time alone, to her dismay. Now, he stood against the trunk of a tree, glaring at her as he watched her slowly recover from the near hypothermic episode she had caused with her own stupidity. Of course, Kaede already knew her actions were ridiculous and because of that, she refused to look at him, training her eyes on the fire before her as it warmed her cooling skin.
"You disappoint me, Kaede." He finally spoke up, voice thick with the anger he felt. "To think someone of your skills would defy my orders and blindly engage the enemy in a fight you knew you couldn't win..."
Kaede realized he would not let this go when she refused to respond and a venomous snake under the Sannin's control slithered up to her, rattling its tail as it hissed menacingly.
Yet another warning.
"Heh..." She huffed out, meeting his angered glare with her own. "Y'think you'd expect this from me at this point!" She shot him a grin that did not resonate in her brown orbs. "When have I ever done anything y'said?"
"No..."
This deep, almost soul-crushing sensation of shock washed over her, and she went rigid, unsure why, but that single word resonated within her in a way she could not quite grasp. It was analytical, strong and honest as if he was speaking the truth without speaking at all. She could not help but listen now, even if she stayed silent, she wanted to know where his refusal lead.
Orochimaru's yellow eyes narrowed sharply and he glared daggers at her. "I understand your behaviors better than anyone." He closed his eyes and lowered his head slightly, brows knitted together in silent rage. "You have always been impulsive, yes, however impractical is not a word I would use to describe you...The way you acted today was reminiscent of the time you sought to end my life, foolish and reckless."
A cold chill ran down Kaede's back, and she swallowed the dryness in her throat, eyes widening slightly as she relived her actions, and compared them to those from a time that felt like so long ago. He was right, during her stay in Otogakure, her impulsive tendencies lessened with each mistake she made, however, when she found herself struggling with her own thoughts and emotions, she returned to the darkest times of her life, where her own safety no longer mattered.
His words when she tried to take her life came to the surface once again, and she silently cursed him for knowing exactly what to say to make her resent her own actions and strive for a better understanding of her own disjointed mind. She clicked her tongue, glaring at the tree to her right. "Mind your own damn business, I ain't some book y'can openly read...There's more t'me than your notes!"
Orochimaru opened his eyes and looked at her, he knew she would not take this conversation further, and understood that pushing the matter would only lead to more arguments and unwanted attention from potential scouts. Instead, he gave her an ultimatum, a reason to think before she acted.
"If you choose to defy my orders again, I will remove you from active duty...I will not risk my ambitions for your sake any longer."
The anger that crossed her features proved that she was listening, and the snake that was threatening her safety returned to Orochimaru, slithering up his pants-leg and vanishing from sight. Silence settled in the area once again.
Despite ruining his entire operation, and willingly putting herself in immediate danger, for which she could have died...He had jumped in to save her the moment Suiton was involved, and she felt a wave of gratitude swell up inside her and a weight lifted off her shoulders, relieved to live another day. She would have understood if he left her to die, left her to drown in her own mistakes, but he chose to put aside her punishment for the sake of her own existence.
Maybe her hatred was more of a hindrance than a motivation now...Maybe, she could find the strength to accept his presence in her life and move on. Even if she could never forgive him for his experiments, that did not mean she had to hate him just to live her life. She closed her eyes and sighed, unaware that Orochimaru was watching her every action, his own expression reading as irritated, while his eyes scanned her form. Without saying a word, he pushed off the trunk of the tree and dove into the leaves above to check on Sasuke. Giving them both time to calm down from the situation.
The silence only made Kaede feel worse.
~BHBL~
A soft growl was heard in the dimly lit kitchen as Kaede stood, hunched over the counter with a can of cola sitting in front of her, and her hands gripping the stone surface it rested on. She was glaring at the wall ahead of her, as her mind raced with many different thoughts, while her body ached with frustration and a desire to exercise, spar, train, anything that involved releasing the tension inside.
It had been a week since the mission and Kaede still struggled to come to terms with her actions. However that was not the problem at this current moment in time, instead, she found herself sexually frustrated as throughout the week, Orochimaru seemed to make it his life goal to be even more attractive than he already was. She was certain he was aware of what he was doing to her but just did not care enough to dial it down for the sake of her sanity.
The way he licked his lips, tucked his hair behind his ear while looming over a scroll, or the way he would breathe into her ear when they sparred made her body hum with want, and she was fighting every fiber of her being to ensure she did not abide by the deal they had made last time they laid in the same bed. Her pride stopped her from moving, even if there was no risk of infatuation on either side, she still believed that accepting his invitation would be like giving up on her hatred once and for all.
She did not want to make that decision yet, she did not know how to move towards it without fearing the results.
Deep down, she questioned everything about him, there was more to him than the villain she had first met, his journals proved that. He had struggled in life just as much as she had, if not more so, and because of that, he was alone, just like she was. Despite the cruel things he had done to her during her torment, he had done some equally good things as well. He had given her back her precious book, saved her life on numerous occasions, praised her skills when she achieved something great and spared her life when she did not dare spare his...
Even if he did not admit it, she saw those kind moments as acts of redemption, a way of making up for the hell he put her through. She did not want to believe them, of course, but she could not deny that he treat her differently to his other subordinates and that the only logical reason for that would be in hopes of redemption. 'Does he even feel guilt?' The redhead asked herself, laughing humorlessly. 'Does he even understand how I feel?'
The way he spoke to her by the fire, the strong tone of his 'no' that made her feel like he was looking into her very soul, came to mind. He knew how she felt, but was not the type to acknowledge or care when others were hurting. She gripped the counter so tightly, her fingers began to ache from the pain.
Revenge was no longer an option on her part. Even without the use of his arms, he was too powerful for her, now she stood no chance in a serious fight against him. Would hating him even make sense anymore? It was not like she could rewind time and return to her happy-go-lucky life, nor could she erase the pain from her memories...But she did not want to spend eternity stewing in a seeping rage that just never ended.
She had to make a choice, drop her anger and finally embrace the life she had, or wallow in self-pity, hatred, and bloodlust until she withered and died from her own poisonous thoughts?
With a sharp hiss, the Ninjutsu expert clenched her teeth tightly and pushed off the counter, turning and storming from the room as she finally came to a decision at long last. With little time to rest, and no desire to hesitate, she trudged down the corridor and stopped at the familiar carved door of Orochimaru's study.
'Are you sure?' Kaede asked herself, taking deep breaths to calm the fear she knew would not go away immediately. Sometimes fear was inevitable, especially with change.
Steeling herself, she grabbed the door handle and burst into the study, surprising both Orochimaru and Kabuto who were in the middle of a serious discussion about Konoha's knowledge against him. "Excuse me, we were in the middle of-" Kabuto started, but was quickly interrupted.
"Shut it and get out." She snapped, then turned her attention to the pale Sannin. "I need a word...In private."
Kabuto bristled and stepped forward. "You are interrupting a serious discussion right now!"
"Kabuto." Orochimaru said, getting his subordinate's attention. His eyes were shining with amusement, and he was watching Kaede like a snake would its prey. He knew that tense posture and that resolved expression anywhere. "Leave us...I will summon you later to continue our discussion."
Kabuto went to protest, but one sharp, threatening glance from the villainous serpent was all he needed to see to change his mind, swallowing his fear as he bowed and left, shooting Kaede one last glare before vanishing down the hallway and out of sight. Once the stubborn redhead was certain he was out of earshot, she took a deep breath and slammed the door shut.
"Remember that deal we had?" She started, muffled by the door. "Well, y'going t'want t'put off that meeting with Kabuto for a while."
Kaede finally had her answer...It was better to let go of her hatred and step into the light of her own life, rather than wallow in anger and seeth in the darkness. Whether or not she would regret this decision was still up for debate, but for now, she would leave her thoughts behind and lay with the man who plagued her mind for many nights.
She had no idea how much this decision would affect her life, But by this point, she had come to terms with the wind that fanned the flames.
