Day 24: Rise

"Kurt," Blaine called softly. No response. "Kurt," he repeated, still quietly, but adding a light nudge with his toe. He was rewarded with a grunt. Progress.

"Ku-urt," he sang, his voice a tiny bit louder than before. The body next to him stirred more this time, making more of a whining noise.

"What," Kurt grumbled.

Blaine smiled. He'd managed to move from noises to words. Well, one word. But still. Shuffling closer, he wrapped an arm around Kurt's waist and brushed his nose against his cheek. He barely dodged the hand that weakly batted at him.

"It's Christmas, Kurt. Wake up," he encouraged, adding a peck on the cheek in apology.

"Ugh, you're like a five-year-old child," Kurt complained, cracking one eye open. "It's barely light out," he whined, squeezing his eyes closed tighter.

Blaine stifled a giggle. "It's well past sunrise, silly. The blinds are closed and keeping the room dark. Come on, rise and shine," he coaxed, sitting up and tugging at the blankets.

Kurt tugged back, pulling them over his head. Blaine almost felt guilty, but he had his reasons for being eager to start the day.

"Come on, sleepyhead," Blaine laughed, pulling the covers back again. "I'm going to go make coffee and pancakes – and baaa-con," he sing-songed again. Slipping out of bed and into his robe, he padded across the floor towards the kitchen.

"Fine," Kurt moaned. "I will rise, but you cannot make me shine." Kurt plopped his feet on the floor and stumbled towards the bathroom. Blaine soon heard the shower running, which gave him time to get breakfast ready. He set out plates, cups, and flatware, adding one extra item to Kurt's place setting.

In the center of his plate sat a small velvet box tied with a simple bow. Blaine had originally planned to propose later in the day with all of their family around, but changed his mind when he awoke. He wanted the moment to be something special that only the two of them shared.

That Christmas morning, despite Kurt's earlier declaration, Blaine not only made him shine, he made him positively sparkle with joy.
