Warriors: Before Fire
Why did this always happen to her? Why? The thought of getting ripped into shreds by wild cats roused her fears and filled her mind with horrible pictures. Someone always dared her to do something stupid-but defiantly not this stupid. To go where no house cat had gone before! Toffee did NOT like the sound of it; she hated adventure.
"Aren't ya' gonna go?" A sleek black tom-cat that's name was Crow hopped onto the fence where Toffee was sitting. "Too scared arn' ya'?" Toffee whipped around to face her tormentor. "Who wouldn't be?" she hissed. "Well, I fur one!" The tom said proudly. "'Ere, I'll show ya' how it's done." He bunched his muscles and leaped down from the safety of the fence and landed in the leaf-mold on the other side. "I'm not coming!" Toffee declared, turning around and landing on the other side of the fence where Crow was sitting. "Oh, c'mon Toffee!" The black furred cat called from the other side. "It ain't-"His voice was cut off by a yowl of terror. Then hissing and spitting told Toffee Crow had found himself trouble.
With a yowl of, "I'm coming Crow!" Toffee pounced on the fence again and saw Crow's attacker.
The enemy was a muscular tabby tom.
A wild cat.
Toffee froze as two other cats padded out of the undergrowth. One was a huge golden tom and the other was a silver-blue queen. "Stop picking a fight with everything you see, Thistleclaw." The golden cat meowed. "It's only a kittypet." But Thistleclaw wasn't listening. He was clearly enjoying his fight with Crow.
Toffee could stand it no longer.
"Let go of him!"
The wild cats looked up. Even Thistleclaw had stopped his fight with Crow to stare at Toffee. "Leave him alone." Toffee growled. Crow struggled to his paws. He was badly scratched on his back and he had a deep scar on his shoulder. He breathed raggedly.
The golden tom spoke up. "The kittypet is right. You know better to attack a kittypet for no reason!"
"Yes," agreed the silver-blue cat. "Lionheart is right. We must not fight for no reason. That is ShadowClan's job!" Lionheart purred in amusement, but Thistleclaw didn't find it very funny.
"What if it was going steel prey, huh Bluefur? What good would it do to let it eat our prey and make us starve?"
Bluefur frowned. "A kittypet is not an 'it'." She said coldly. "And I do believe he was not going on a hunting mission either."
Thistleclaw snorted.
"Come on you lot," Lionheart flicked her tail in annoyance. "All the prey will die of old age once you two finish bickering." They followed Lionheart out of the clearing, all except for Bluefur. She glanced around warily before saying, "I think it would be wise to stay in your gardens and not go to hunt here. Thistleclaw is very protective of his territory." Toffee nodded and promised, "We won't do it again. We are sorry." Bluefur nodded and ignored a defiant stare from Crow as she turned and bounded away from the two house cats.
