Mary grabbed a light jacket, which she tied around her waist, and they left the hotel together.

It was easy for Mary to find a diner that Sirius was allowed in. It wasn't exactly busy, but it wasn't empty either. There were five people she could see, including the server, and they all seemed to give her a pitying, curious looks, and she knew for a fact that the server called someone as soon as she sat down at a table with Sirius at her feet.

"Can I get you something?" the server - Daniel - asked her.

"Yes. Can I please get a glass of water and a bowl of water for Siri? I still haven't decided on food."

"I'll be back with that."

Mary then tried to do something that she had read about in the past - projecting her thoughts to Sirius. It took a few minutes before he answered.

Awesome! What is this? Sirius finally got across.

Thought projection. I read about it while I was studying for the tournament. What do you want to eat?

An egg sandwich would be nice.

Bacon or ham?

Don't ask stupid questions.

Mary chuckled out loud before responding. Bacon. I shouldn't have bothered asking.

Daniel came back with a glass and a bowl of water in hand. "Have you decided what to get?" he asked.

"Yeah, can I have two egg and bacon sandwiches?"

"That will be right out. Is there anything else you need while you wait?"

"No, thank you." A few minutes later, Mary was approached by a brunette woman.

"Hi there. My name is Jody Mills. Are you okay?"

"Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?" Mary questioned with a frown.

"Where are your parents?"

"Adoptive mother and father, dead and buried for about fourteen years now, same with my biological mother, I'm meeting with a friend of my father's later," Mary recited, ignoring the hurt in her gut at knowing that she had one person left living who could be considered her parent in the eyes of the law. Even then, according to Dean's rap sheet, he should have been dead already - shot after torturing a young woman.

"Maybe I should come with you?" the woman suggested.

"No thanks, I'm good. And I'm sure you have better things to do than sit here with me. Sirius will keep me safe. He always does."

"If you're sure... At least let me drive you there."

"Sure. We're headed to Singer's Salvage Yard. Do you know where it is?"

"It's not a good idea to go there," Jody warned.

"He was a friend of my godfather's. And Siri wouldn't let anything happen to me, would you, boy?" Sirius nudged her leg with is nose and put his head in her lap. "I'll be perfectly safe."

"Isn't there someone back home who would be worried about you?" Jody tried desperately.

"Everyone of import supports me. There are a few people who no doubt want me back, but that's just too bad for them. I'm not going back. If you were serious" - Shut it, Sirius! - "about that ride, I'd be happy to accept your offer."
