T420000 : I'm sorry you had to go through that but I'm glad you're taking the chance to talk about it now. I hope your talks went/go well. Thank you for your support.
Minnie1015: Yeah, he really does and sadly, he didn't have the option before, having that silence enforced upon him... Honestly, I'm of two minds about what he would've told Splinter. I think he still would have tried to keep it to himself given the choice but it's hard to say whether Splinter would have tried to use his authority to try and get Mikey to open up or not. He... doesn't always come across as the most sensitive to his sons' needs.
ViolaHarmony: Thank you. It wasn't the easiest to write and you have no idea how many small changes have been made since (as with all chapters really but that and this in particular). Yeah, the 2k12 brothers never mean to hurt each other and yet they so often do... though the same can be said for many families all over, really... I've always loved the bond between Mikey and Donnie :-) Hmm, Mai, well, there is plenty of unfinished business there so no, not so weird. She will be returning. Eventually. It's just going to be a long wait before she does XD
Animago: Thank you for all the comments, I'm happy you're enjoying the story :-) yeah, don't worry, this story is far from finished and is updated every 2-3 weeks. The main reason for the wait between chapters is I am also updating other stories and normally only post one chapter/story each week. Unfortunately, before Mikey learnt Morse Code, he had no way of talking to his brothers. Yes, as Raph pointed out, they can lip read so even without a voice he could have technically told them that way or through the Astral Plain but he's been taught that to try to talk or do anything human-like leads to pain and punishment. He might know he's safe now but his heart doesn't believe it yet and that kind of trauma makes it hard for him to do such things now. An Astral Plain scene will eventually happen but it won't be for a while yet. Yes, talking about what happened was very important and you're right, it was probably easier for him because it was in Morse code. Especially since only Donnie is fluent and that means he doesn't have to tell the others yet.
How Much is that Turtle in the Window
ch 27
Mikey laid in Donnie's lap for hours, refusing to move even when Donnie shifted for a better position. After some time of no noise, Leo peeked in to check on them, raising a brow ridge questioningly. Donnie gave a tiny smile and lifted up a finger to say shh, even though Mikey was still awake, still occasionally shuddering in his lap. Leo nodded and walked quietly away, returning a couple of minutes later with the bowl and a bottle of fresh water, placing one down near Mikey and handing the other to Donnie. Then he left again without a word.
Mikey stared down at the water in exhaustion, wanting it, yet unwilling to move.
"Do want me to bring the water closer?" Donnie asked softly.
'Yes,' Mikey blinked, though Donnie couldn't see it.
"Mikey?" Donnie pressed gently, his voice kind yet tired.
Mikey struggled to make an effort but it was too hard and all he managed was to shift slightly in his brother's arms.
Donnie pursed his lips then reached for the bowl, lifting it by Mikey's face and Mikey finally met him halfway, shifting enough to reach and allowing Donnie to tip it enough to drink from. Then he pulled back, curling up tighter in shame and shaking harder again.
"It's okay, Mikey," Donnie murmured soothingly, "no one would expect you to be okay after what you just told me. Just let it all out. No one else needs to see."
{Why?} Mikey suddenly tapped hard against his leg without looking up and causing Donatello to wince slightly. {Why did they... do that to me?}
Donnie sucked in a breath as the pain of his little brother's question hit him.
{They wanted me to be a dog... but... y...ou don't do that to dogs...} he sniffled.
"No, you don't," Donnie agreed stiffly. "Unfortunately, there are some sick people out in the world who do... violate animals that way but..." he shuddered slightly, choking on the words, the emotion and plaintive need of his little brother getting to him, "it may not have been because they saw you as a... it may have been simply because you were helpless and vulnerable or even just curiosity because you're not human. I-it's difficult to say for sure without confronting those responsible a-and that's not possible. Not anymore."
{Not anymor,} Mikey agreed lethargically. Three hadn't been the only one to hurt him that way but he was the most regular and he wasn't sure he'd have been able to pick anyone else out of a crowd. {What now, D? How do I...}
"I don't know, buddy," Donnie admitted softly when Mikey petered off. "I'm not a psychiatrist. I've never done anything but the most rudimentary research into such things and we don't have the benefit of the internet to fall back on for advice right now but I'll tell you this much, I'll do everything I can to help you, even if all it can be is being here for you as someone to lean on or as an ear to listen. You can bet Leo and Raph would too."
Mikey shuddered again in his arms and Donnie smiled sadly.
"Okay," he chuckled weakly, "Raph may not be a good listener but you know Leo is. Better than me if I'm being honest, but you know Raph would still help however he can, right?"
Mikey didn't react. He couldn't.
"I know you're feeling pretty low and lost right now but don't you feel some kind of relief, even just a little, at being able to talk to someone at last?"
Mikey hesitated and then shrugged, too drained to really think.
Suddenly, Leo appeared at the entrance to the private area, looking at them in concern again. "The sun went down a couple of hours ago so we're going to open the door to let some fresh air in here. Do you want Raph and I to leave so you can come to the door?"
"How about it, Mikey?" Donnie asked softly. "Think you can move?"
Mikey stiffened a moment but then he pushed himself awkwardly from Donnie's lap and looking down at the ground, tapped once.
Donnie relaxed slightly and smiled wanly up at Leonardo, "That would be great, Leo."
Swallowing and looking worriedly at Mikey once more, Leo nodded before turning away and softly calling for Raph.
"Come on, it's best if we get out of this section before the light goes off," Donnie encouraged gently and Mikey blinked once before walking out, slowly and unsteadily. He did, however, stop at the end, not wanting to step out into the open and be subjected to the scrutiny of his other brothers.
"You can turn the light out now," Donnie called quietly.
A moment later, the floodlight – which had long been turned to reflect off the ceiling - went off and the door opened, letting in the cool ocean air. With a glance backwards, Raph and Leo exited the sea container, leaving Mikey and Donnie inside alone.
With a deep, shuddering breath, Mikey began walking unsteadily towards the door, settling down on his plastron and elbows with his head just inside. Donnie sat beside him, close enough for Mikey to lean on if he chose.
{I wanted to die, D,} he eventually managed, sensing Donnie stiffen beside him. {So many times. I... thawt would be better if I did.}
"Was that because of what..." Donnie swallowed nervously before pushing on, "Three-Five-Eight did or because you thought rescue wasn't coming?"
{Hai,} Mikey tapped.
"Yes to which?"
{Both,} Mikey rested his forehead on the metal ground tiredly. {When I attacked A... D...ogpound on first ship... I tried to... I figured if I couldn't kill him, maybe he'd be angry enough to kill me.}
Donnie clenched his fists tightly beside him.
{He didn't but he hurt me so badly after and... an' things got so much worse. Be... for the metal paws, they covered my hands in plaster and I ch...ipped away at it every day on the ship, near...ly broke free on one. Then, when we got to...Foot HQ when she treated me, they re...placed plaster with focus mitts and taped them on. Tried to get out of that too an'... that's why welded these on... b'cuz kept try...ing to get free.}
"Oh, Mikey..."
{It... was on the way from ship to HQ that... he told me I... couldn't try to talk or... communicate in any way that made me seem human... sed... if did and seen, then they'd hand me over for... punish...ment... experamentation... sed... to help me, he'd get Mai to remove voice box.}
Donnie looked down at him sharply. "Is that why you won't talk? Because they threatened it or... because they actually did it?"
Mikey hung his head again, unable to answer.
"How did they manage to remove it with that collar in the way or... did that go on after you arrived?"
{Stockboy put it on before leaving NY,} Mikey admitted morosely. {Al...pha wanted it impossable to get off so no one could just... pik it.}
Donnie ground his teeth a moment before speaking. "Then I don't see how they could have removed your vocal cords, Mikey. Our mouths are large, yes but... such a total removal would be extremely difficult, especially with that collar restricting the area."
{That's what Mai sed. She refused to do it, D.}
Donnie was confused. "So it was the threat that made you mute or was there something else?"
{Sumthing else,} Mikey admitted slowly, lifting his head again and staring out to sea. He couldn't see any stars and he frowned. {D, no stars.}
"Please don't change the subject, Mikey, this is too important," Donnie begged as he looked up.
A bright flash of lightning suddenly ripped along the sky and both turtles jumped as a loud boom followed immediately. Donnie swallowed in worry.
"Get back further inside, Mikey, it's too dangerous to be so close to the edge."
Mikey frowned again. What was so dangerous about that? He didn't even have his head out the door and there was almost two feet before the drop.
"Please, Mikey," Donnie pressed when Mikey didn't make a move. "Storms are particularly dangerous at sea as the waters become even more unpredictable than usual."
Mikey sighed and shuffled further in.
"I..." Donnie swallowed, torn between staying with Mikey where he knew he was needed or going after Leo and Raph, unsure that they knew the danger of being swept overboard by the fast-rising waters. "I'm going to see if I can find our brothers," he finally said anxiously. "Will you be alright? I won't be gone long, I promise. Just a couple of minutes tops."
Mikey cringed at the thought. They promised never to leave him alone, especially in this prison... but... he could hear the worry and fear for their brothers in Donnie's voice. {Hai,} he tapped reluctantly.
"Okay. I'll shut the door to keep you safe. I won't be long, I promise," he repeated. Then, Donnie stepped outside and shut the door, leaving Mikey trapped inside in the dark and completely alone for the first time since Dogpound left him that first day aboard.
-:-
The thunder quickly grew louder and more frequent, hurting Mikey's hearing as it echoed in the metal storage container. The sea grew rough and more than once he lost his balance, finding himself knocked over and sliding uncontrollably across the floor. He tried desperately to grab hold of the corrugated floor with his paws and his feet but to no avail. His paws had no grip, no flexibility and his feet, unable to grip as well as his fingers used to, just bounced out of the grooves.
He swallowed painfully in fear, his eyes darting anxiously about in the darkness as he wondered if he'd ever see his brothers again.
The storm came on so suddenly, so fast, that it was difficult to believe and as the ship listed suddenly to one side sending crates smashing to the floor and him into the wall, he immediately understood just why Donnie had been so fearful.
He cried out in sudden, silent pain as something crashed into him. One of the crates, he realised with a groan. It wasn't safe out there but it wasn't any safer in here either. Mikey twisted desperately, trying to push the crate off him but to his terror, he discovered it was wedged in place, pinning him to the wall.
If only he could see! Damn that light being off!
He struggled to push it away again but he couldn't get the leverage. His breathing quickened as he began to panic and he ran one paw along the bottom edge of the wooden box, trying fruitlessly to feel why it wouldn't budge when the ship listed the other way again.
Suddenly, he found himself freed but instead he was tumbling out of control the other way again. Mikey screamed silently in terror, slamming to an abrupt halt as he smashed plastron first into the edge of another crate and gasping painfully for breath he couldn't get, he looked frantically about in the darkness.
Where were his brothers!
Donnie said he wouldn't be long! Said he was just looking for the others but... what if he'd been swept overboard like he obviously feared for Raph and Leo. What if... all of them had been... and he was trapped in here alone. He'd never survive without them and after everything he'd been through, after them finally finding and rescuing him, he didn't want to!
Then there was a huge wet sounding crash and Mikey tumbled the other way again, still breathless, out of control and terrified. Stars exploded in his vision as he hit the wall, head and shell simultaneously. Then a moment later, something hurtled into him.
-:-
Shivering violently from cold, Raphael clutched the handle of their shipping container just in time as a massive wave swamped the ship. He was lucky, he gasped, that they were high up and the waves had yet to reach them but still, the way the cargo ship was being tossed around, it was miraculous he hadn't fallen overboard. Raph blinked salt from his eyes as he heard a series of crashes from inside and groaned.
Donnie had been right. Ugh... again! They really should have tied everything down as he'd said when they rearranged the space but there hadn't been enough rope to do so and set the container up with two private areas for them to use so they hadn't done it properly.
Gritting his teeth, Raph waited for the ship to stabilise before wrenching the door open and rushing inside. He quickly pulled the door closed again and peered into the pitch darkness.
"Donnie?" he called worriedly. "Are you guys alright?" No answer. A rush of dread coursed through him. "Mikey?" But the problem with calling Mikey was that he had no voice, especially if he was desperately trying to hold onto something.
Worried, Raph fumbled in his belt as he listened for an answer, pulling out his penlight. "Guys, are you okay?" he called again, switching on the light and shining it around the container. "Answer me, dammit!" Then he gasped as he finally saw green limbs caught between a crate and the wall.
"Mi-Mikey!" he screamed, dashing to his brother in fear as the ship lilted again. The boxes and Mikey began sliding across the floor and Raph fought to catch him, scrabbling at the corrugations in the floor as he too lost his balance.
The ship stabilised momentarily and shaking with worry, Raph pulled Mikey to the clear section of the container near the door, hoping that nothing would rush their way with the next wave.
He carefully laid his limp brother down, shining the light slowly along him and gasped as he saw the blood dribbling down from his temple.
"Mikey!" Raph cried out again, frantically crouching down and fluttering thick fingertips against his throat, searching desperately for a pulse.
He couldn't find it! Raph gasped. "Nononono! You can't be dead, not after all this!" he chanted desperately. "P-please don't leave us, little bro! DONNIE!" he screamed, casting his head around, looking for the other brother that should be here. Leonardo, he had no clue about. They'd gone their separate ways upon leaving earlier, needing some time apart after the stress of the last few days and today in particular. He could only hope Leo had been able to find somewhere safe to hole up.
There was no reply from Donnie but Raph didn't dare leave Mikey, not when he was alone and helpless and please only unconscious but he still couldn't find a pulse!
The terror building, Raph leant down to give mouth to mouth when the ship tilted alarmingly again. He grabbed onto Mikey as tightly as he could, holding them both in place as crates and the mattress slid along the floor.
The moment the room settled, Raph leant down and froze, feeling the faint ghosting of breath. He couldn't feel a pulse but his brother was definitely still breathing at least. "Fuck, Mikey! Don't scare me like that!" he snapped in relief.
Suddenly, the door opened again and wide-eyed, Raphael whipped his head around to see Leonardo silhouetted briefly in the doorway.
"Thank fuck you're back, Leo!"
"Nice to see you're alright too, Raph," Leo retorted drily as he strained against the wind and rain to pull the door closed behind him. "What about Mikey and Donnie?"
"Don't know," Raph growled in frustration. "Mikey's out cold and I can't see Donnie anywhere. I think he left him, but... I haven't been able to look properly so I could be wrong. I better be fucking wrong!"
Raph sensed Leo give him a look before gingerly moving through the debris across the room. Moments later, the floodlight was switched on and Raph blinked from the sudden brightness.
"He's not here," Leo replied sounding far calmer than he should as he stared about the room, dodging objects as they slid partway across the container again.
Raphael growled, barely keeping his fury under control.
"How's Mikey?"
"I can't find his pulse but... he was breathing just before you came in."
"His pulse point's under that collar."
Raph looked up sharply. Of course it was and the ones on his wrists were behind the sleeves of his manacles. "Right. I knew that. Leo, we gotta do something about this stuff before it kills us."
"Yes," Leo replied distantly, peering intently about the room. Suddenly he began moving, snatching up the now loose rope. "Prop Mikey upright in the corner."
Raph stared at him incredulously.
"Hurry, Raph."
Moments later, Raph had Mikey in place and Leo looped the rope around his armpits, securing him upright.
"Are you insane?" Raph hissed in disbelief. "If he wakes to find himself tied up..."
"We'll be right here," Leo cut Raph off smoothly, "and it's not for long but I need you to help me and you can't very well do that if you're trying to stop Mikey sliding around."
"Right... what're we doing?"
"We'll use the mattress as a barricade," Leo replied in a clipped tone. "Get everything behind it and tie it in place. We'll have to be fast before another wave knocks the ship about again."
"Right."
For the next several minutes, the pair worked frantically and methodically, fighting to hold the mattress in place every time the ship tilted and crates began to slide. Finally, they had everything in place and the mattress secured. They watched anxiously as the next wave swamped the ship, sighing in relief as the mattress bulged alarmingly but everything stayed put. Then, shaking from effort, they made their way back to Mikey, adjusting the rope to support them as well and began to wait out the storm
-:-
Ugh... why did his head hurt so much again? When even was the last time he didn't hurt in some way or another?
Mikey painfully blinked his eyes open to find himself sitting up in a weird position with something running uncomfortably under his arms. He looked down blearily to see... rope? Suddenly it hit him and his eyes flew wide as he struggled in panic. He whipped his head around, searching for who had captured him this time.
"Mikey!" a familiar voice called urgently from beside him. "Mikey, it's okay, you're safe. We're with you."
Raph? Mikey whimpered silently in fear as he turned to see his brother similarly propped up beside him.
"Hey," Raphael smiled in relief, "good to see you awake again, little bro. I promise it's okay. The rope's only there to keep us safe, okay?"
'No,' Mikey blinked, weakly trying to struggle free again.
"We're not tied up, Mikey," Leonardo spoke soothingly from his other side. "The ropes are just running under our arms to stop us sliding about during the storm. We can get out at any time, see?" Leo explained, lifting first his own arm and then one of Mikey's.
Still shaking but feeling better with seeing proof, Mikey began to calm, looking about again. His head hurt so much and everything was really blurry... {Where's D?} he tapped slowly, awkwardly, from his upright position.
"We were hoping you could tell us," Leo replied uneasily.
Mikey frowned and then his eyes widened as he remembered. {D... went to find you!} he tapped in fear. {He sed... wouldn't be long,} he added frantically.
"Calm down and slow down, Mikey, I can't keep up with you," Leonardo instructed, frowning worriedly.
"So he seriously left you alone in here?" Raph spat furiously. "What the hell was he thinking?"
Mikey began to tremble all over again.
"Raph," Leonardo chided calmly, "you're scaring him."
"Yeah, I'll fucking scare him when he comes back, alright," he snarled furiously. "How dare he leave Mikey alone! Didn't he realise the fucking danger?"
"I'm guessing he did and that's why he went looking for us," Leo stated drily. "Now please, calm down for Mikey's sake." Then he turned back to Mikey, seeing his eyes squeezed tightly shut and his head withdrawn as far into his shell as the collar would allow, which wasn't very far. Still, it was enough to paint a good picture of the fear he felt.
"Mikey, I need you to tell me what happened, when and why exactly that Donnie left, and what happened afterwards. Can you do that?"
As Leo spoke, Mikey fought to open his eyes and look at him. Then he blinked languidly in response and started to slowly explain.
Sometime later, Leonardo stared grimly at the door as he translated for Raph.
"He should have just trusted us and stayed here," Raph snorted. He couldn't believe how stupid their brother had been by going out after them in this weather.
"Yes," Leo agreed distantly, patting Mikey's arm comfortingly. Then he stopped and stared intently into Mikey's unfocused eyes. "How about you?" he asked. "You were unconscious when Raph came back. How are you feeling?"
{Scared. Wot if sumthing happend to D?} Mikey asked anxiously, almost too fast for Leo to follow.
"He's a smart turtle. If he realised he couldn't get back safely he would have found somewhere safe to wait it out."
{No! Sed he'd be bak. He wud hav come bak!} Mikey insisted hysterically.
Leonardo frowned as he struggled to translate, understanding only enough to get the gist. What Mikey said was also true but if he couldn't... "He'll be fine," he repeated confidently.
"At least he will be until I'm done with him," Raphael promised darkly.
Mikey glanced fearfully up at Raph and tried to struggle free once more but Leo put out a steadying hand.
"Stay put, Mikey," he commanded gently. "The storm's dying down but it's still too dangerous to move about. I don't want you getting hurt again and Raph, settle down," he added in a low, warning tone.
Raph glared at him and Leo mouthed Mikey's name while flickering his eyes to their brother in between them and Raph's face went sick with realisation.
{Don't like, L,} Mikey tapped miserably. {U guys c'n get out but I can't. To hevy an'... hed hrts to much.}
"You hit it pretty hard," Leo agreed softly. "It's probably made that concussion worse."
Squinting, Mikey looked up at him and he looked terrible and not just because of the dried blood down the side of his face.
"I'm sorry but we have no idea where the first aid kit is. There was no time to find it among all that mess," Leo apologised softly, reaching up to touch Mikey's head and turn it to look at the injury better. Mikey flinched at the touch but allowed him to do it and Leo looked past him to Raph. "Do you have that torch handy? I want to take a better look."
"Sure," Raph nodded, reaching down to his belt and pulling it back out.
"Hold still, Mikey, let me see," Leo murmured reassuringly as Raph shined the light on his temple.
Mikey swallowed and blinked 'yes,' staring at Leo the whole time, the anxiety loud and clear on his face, in his unfocused eyes.
Leonardo kept his face carefully schooled as he studied the injury, taking in the jagged cut above the temple that still had splinters sticking out of it and the deep bruising all about. The dried blood made it look ghastly but Leo was relieved to see the cut was clear of the temple itself.
"When the storm is over and it's safe to move about, we'll have to take care of that."
{'k,} Mikey replied, tapping sluggishly.
Leo reached out to take the penlight from Raph and shone it into Mikey's eyes, one at a time, thankful that Donnie had given him lessons on what to look for. He smiled reassuringly at Mikey while covering up his fear. They needed Donnie. He couldn't be sure but he thought this was worse than the previous time after Bradford had so badly mistreated their brother. He went to hand the small torch back to Raph but Raph shook his head.
"Hey, Mikey, can you look at me?"
Mikey slowly turned, his expression bewildered. {Wot's up, R?}
"Just wanna know how you're feeling," he said with a small smile. "You sick or just hurting?"
Leo felt as if the air was punched from his chest. Though there was no cut this time, there was another massive bruise on the back of Mikey's head along with a gigantic goose egg.
Mikey made a face as if he was going to be sick.
"Sick, huh?" Raph asked softly.
'Yeah,' Mikey blinked, looking as if he was barely there.
"How bad?"
Mikey canted his head slightly as he thought. Then tapped out seven. Leo relaxed, not too bad then, and let out the breath he didn't realise he was holding. Still... He handed back the light and pulled out his T-phone, turning it on for the first time since it was charged.
{Gonna play a song, L?} Mikey asked, the light from the device attracting his attention, even if he did look pained looking at it.
Leo just smiled and turned down the screen brightness. Then he found the tracking app and turned it on. Elation filled him as two blips showed up on the screen, showing Raph and Donnie's phones - even when turned off, they sent out a very small signal so if you were close enough you could track them. Then his heart fell as he realised both phones were in the same room.
Donnie hadn't taken his with him.
-:-
The sounds of the storm had long died off yet the seas were still rough. Mikey drooped more and more as he fought to stay awake at Leo's request. Leo and Raph had been taking it in turns to try to keep him engaged but it wasn't working, anything he tapped had long devolved from the point of making any sense.
Leo glanced over at the door to see faint light seeping through the cracks. Despite the weather, daylight had come meaning it was not safe for them to venture outside and yet...
"One of us needs to go find Donnie," Raph said in a low, hoarse voice.
Leo couldn't agree more. "It's light out. We can't risk it."
"Fuck the risk! Mikey needs him!" Raph hissed angrily. "And who's going to see us? Seriously? It's still pissing down with rain and the door faces out over the damn ocean!"
Leo swallowed. Raphael had a point, one he'd already thought of multiple times now. Trouble was, if Donnie hadn't returned by now it was likely because he couldn't. Either he'd been discovered or... far more likely he'd had been washed overboard and lost at sea. To be honest, as worried as he was about Donatello, he was more considering the thought of whether to find the ship's medic or not. Surely there had to be one but it was possible they were already inundated with dealing with the crew after that violent storm and ninja or not, they wouldn't be able to get to them without being noticed.
"Leo!" Raph repeated, his voice suddenly more urgent. Leo turned to see Mikey had slumped and wasn't stirring, even with Raph shaking him. Fear shone in his bright green eyes and Leo made his decision.
"Stay here, keep trying to get him to wake up," he commanded as he slid out from under the rope.
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to bring back the ship's doctor," Leo replied tightly.

A/N: Just a head's up, it's going to be an extra week's wait for chapter 28 as I plan to post the next chapter of 'AOtGO' in two weeks (I gave a friend the choice of ch 28 of this and 'AOtGO' 33 without letting them read this chapter first). Ch 28 of 'How Much is that Turtle' will therefore be delayed a week to make room for 'AOtGO' ch 33.
