Chapter 04 - We Are Back
Wunder
It had been 3 days since Asuka, Shinji and Rei had been rescued. Once again, they had put a DDS choker on him, with a warning that, that if he escaped again, it was set to detonate upon leaving the range of the detonator.
- This choker is tight. - Shinji was thinking while looking at the nothingness in his cell.
It consisted of a small space, which only fit a single bed and a tiny compartment containing the bathroom and shower. His movements were monitored by a camera 24 hours a day. Anywhere he went in his cell, the camera followed him.
Shinji was depressed, not by the fact that he was in a prison again, but by the fact that, with every face he met, he could see the hatred in their eyes. He knew he deserved it. After all, he had destroyed their world. The only thing he did was eat some of the food they gave him and cry at the knowledge that he had ruined everything again. No matter how many times he tried to defend himself mentally, he always came to the same conclusion.
- It was my fault. - Shinji thought sadly in his bed as he looked up at the ceiling. It was the only place to look, since his cell had no windows. He only knew that the day was over by the turning on and off of the lights.
Deep down he was thankful for this, because then he wouldn't have to see the consequences of his mistake. He didn't regret trying to save Rei that day, but he did regret pushing Eva to its limit. If he had known Unit-01 could do something like that, he would've done it differently.
- I just hope Rei is okay. She doesn't deserve to suffer for something she was programmed to do. - Shinji thought worriedly. - Why is this happening? -
At that moment he began to cry on his bed. It was the only thing he could do.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry," Shinji wept.
"You know they're going to do it, don't you?" The voice in his head began to speak. "You know she was right when she said they would take all the information from you... You know you will suffer."
- I know, but somehow I deserve it. I ended everyone's life... There is no more future for me." Shinji thought sadly as he stared at the ceiling.
"You really are an idiot... Won't you even try to prove that you are innocent?" The voice asked.
- Prove how? – Shinji thought.
"I don't know… Telling your side of the story?" the voice answered with obvious irony.
- Nothing I say will help me... Moreover, like it or not, it won't do any good…- Shinji thought.
"So it's going to be like this… Are you going to give up?" The voice spoke in annoyance.
- It's not giving up… it's that I can't do anything... nobody will believe me... this trial is pretty much set already... I'm already doomed. - Shinji thought as he covered his face and cried freely. - Misato hates me, like everyone else... Shit! Why am I so useless!? -
The only sound in the cell was that of Shinji crying, a sound that many inside Wunder were happy to hear. They were happy that he was suffering, happy that he knew he had been caught and would be punished for all his crimes. However, there were some people inside Wunder who were feeling distressed by this, and one of those people was Misato. She was watching the video feed in her office, struggling to hold back her tears as she saw her former guard crying in the cell.
Colonel Katsuragi's Office - Wunder
- Why am I treating you like this? Why was I so cold to him moments after he woke up? Why am I allowing this? - Misato thought sadly, in her chair, as she looked at the video feed.
"You know why." Her conscience spoke. "Deep down, you know you are just like Gendo. You are willing to do anything for your revenge... including..."
- You're wrong, I'm not like that. - Misato thought in annoyance.
"Hahaha... Really, Misato? Do you really want to play this little game with me? You know you were very close to killing him when he escaped from Wunder..." The voice in his head accused.
Misato didn't know how to respond. She didn't want to believe her past attitudes.
"It would have been better. You know what they're going to do to him, don't you?" The voice asked
- No! We're not like that. - Misato thought anxiously, trying desperately to push the images of Shinji being tortured out of her mind; but the mere idea was enough to make a couple of tears run down her face.
- I won't allow it... I won't. - A determined Misato thought.
At this moment, Lieutenant Tama knocked on her office door. The colonel quickly wiped her face and put down the screen, but Tama had already realized what was happening and looked at Misato with annoyance.
- Shit... close the fucking door next time, Misato. Did he notice? - She thought, trying to pull herself together.
"What is it?" she asked, looking again at the documents on her desk.
"Ma'am, we have information that some Mark.04 are approaching. Interception time in approximately three hours," Tama replied.
"Okay. I'm leaving for the bridge in five minutes," Misato answered as she began to arrange the papers on her desk.
"Yes ma'am..." Tama was turning to leave when he whispered: "Freak... crying for the terrorist."
Misato at this moment froze in her seat. She began to feel an anger rising up and tried to control it, but it was stronger than her. She stood up abruptly, almost knocking over her chair in the act, and headed for the bridge.
When she reached the bridge, Tama was walking a few meters ahead of her.
"Lieutenant Tama! What did you just say?" Misato spoke in a threatening tone.
Tama stopped and froze in fear, for he knew he had said more than he should have. He began to turn slowly towards Misato.
"Nothing Ma'am."
"It didn't sound like nothing! Did I hear you calling me a freak?" Misato accused Tama, speaking in a firm tone of voice, daring him to answer. At this moment, everyone was looking at the situation, their eyes full of astonishment. And, in the case of bridge elders like Shigeru and Hyuga, knew how Misato reacted when provoked, especially if it involved Shinji.
- He fucked up! – Shigeru and Hyuga thought. They looked at each other and gave a slight smile.
"I'm waiting, lieutenant!" Misato ordered in annoyance.
Tama was paralyzed in shock, looking down because he was too afraid to look Misato in the eye. In those 14 years he had known her dark side more than once.
"Sorry ma'am," that was all Tama could answer.
"Good," Misato replied, approaching Tama and directing a fierce look at him. "Because when I want your opinion, I will ask you! Do you understand, Lieutenant?" Misato spoke in a menacing tone that no one had seen her using before, maintaining eye contact with her victim at all times.
"Yes ma'am," Tama replied with his head bowed.
"Go back to your post," Misato ordered. "Everyone get the level 3 battle stations ready."
"Yes ma'am," was the general cry from everyone on the bridge.
Koji was doing as he was told, but he didn't stop thinking with satisfaction. - These kids who think they're so cool... See if you can learn now, idiot. –
As Wunder approached the Mark.04, the mood within the ship became agitated, but the only one who showed no reaction was Shinji. He continued to lie down, staring at the nothingness on the ceiling of his cell. He could hear Misato's announcement for everyone to go to their posts, since they were at threat level of 3.
- What will the threat be? - Shinji thought, depressed in his bed.
Meanwhile, Mari and Asuka were preparing for battle. They knew that Wunder could take on some lonely Mark.04 Units; but they were still on standby. Mari noticed that Asuka had been very quiet since her return, and decided to ask.
"So, Princess… Did something happen in the red land? Did you catch the clone playing with the puppy's lollipop?" Mari asked, with a mischievous smile on her face.
Asuka blushed at Mari's insinuation, and could only respond with a standard swearing.
"Shut your perverted mouth, four eyes!" she yelled at Mari.
- Asuka's classic pattern. - Mari thought with a smile on her face. "But seriously, Princess; you are quieter than usual."
Asuka didn't know how to respond. She couldn't get out of her head what Shinji had said to the clone when he thought she wasn't listening. - How could the brat think that of me?... How could he think that?... What kind of feeling is this? -
She was very confused now, but still answered Mari's question.
"Nothing, four eyes. How many times do I have to say it?" Asuka growled.
"The longer you keep denying it, the worse it will get. I don't know what happened, but it has affected you. You know Aunt Mari will be here in case you want to talk," Mari answered, offering a reassuring smile.
Asuka knew Mari was a pain in the ass, but she was also the only real friend she'd had in years. She knew she could always count on her, and yet she couldn't open up to her. Her pride would never allow her to show weakness in front of anyone. As she looked at Mari's face and nodded slightly, Asuka thought:
- One day, Mari, I will tell you… but I can't now. The only one who saw that side of me was... Shinji... what the fuck kind of feeling is this? – Asuka pondered in frustration as she looked at what was left of unit 2. Her Eva was being renovated after self-destruction.
"I wonder how long it will take them to repair your unit," Mari said, hoping to get Asuka out of her private world.
"I don't know, four eyes," that was Asuka's simple answer.
- Wow... I wonder what happened? – Mari thought, curiously, as she looked at Asuka. - I'll try something. -
"Princess?"
"What, four eyes?" Asuka answered, tiredly.
"When this attack is over... shall we visit the Puppy?" Mari asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
Asuka didn't answer. She simply looked at the ground and denied it with her head. Asuka didn't know what she was feeling at the moment, or what her reaction would be when seeing Shinji again, after everything she had heard.
"Boring... I'm going!" Mari replied, pouting.
- Well, maybe after I visit Puppy, I'll visit the clone, too. Let's see what's so special about her. - Mari thought with determination.
While Wunder was flying at full speed toward the rendezvous with the Mark.04 series, somewhere in New England, Commander Sebastian was in his office, getting updates from the battleship and other active sites.
- So, we got you, kid. - Sebastian thought as he read Wunder's report about his capture. He was confident that he would get the information he wanted from Shinji.
Sebastian's plan was to know Shinji's secret to awakening an Eva. If he could extract this information from him, this war and its goal would change in an incredible way, for whoever controlled an army of awakened Evas would control the world.
- You're not going to stop me from achieving my goals, kid... I'm going to get what I want one way or another... even if I have to break you some more to do it. - Sebastian thought darkly as he looked at Shinji's photo from the old NERV records.
At that moment, an alert signal flashed on Sebastian's computer screen. The message was from one of his intelligence commanders, updating him on everything that was happening about his forces. He promptly answered.
"Yes," that was Sebastian's dry reply.
"Sir, we have received information that the Wunder is heading eastbound at full speed." Answered the person on the other end of the line.
Sebastian was annoyed by the information. "What the fuck are they doing!?" he growled, promptly beginning to establish communication with Wunder.
Sebastian had given them explicit orders to return to deliver prisoner BM-03 as soon as his capture was completed. He did not like being contradicted or challenged.
"Set me up communication with Wunder now!" he ordered
"Yes sir," was the only response received.
After a few moments, he received a video feedback, in which Misato appeared with a look of annoyance on her face.
After a few seconds of silence, Sebastian growled at Misato.
"Where do you think you are going, colonel?"
"Going to intercept enemy units, sir." Was Misato's dry reply.
Sebastian was getting annoyed with her. He had given express orders.
"Didn't I give you express orders, colonel?" Sebastian demanded.
Looking down, Misato turned back to face him.
"Sir, those Mark.04 units are heading for one of the colonies. We have to intercept them, otherwise the casualties will be too many and no..." Misato couldn't say anything more, for she was cut off by the commander.
"No matter. Your orders are to bring the prisoner here for his trial. Or do you want to give him another chance to escape, Colonel Katsuragi?" Sebastian shouted.
Misato could not believe it. She was in shock on the inside, but managed to keep up the façade on the outside. She blinked and spoke:
"Sir, the prisoner will not escape again, we have to help people."
"These people will get the help they need, but not from you! Come back now! That's an order." Sebastian said as he turned off his video feed with Misato.
- What is that cow doing? - He thought in annoyance, looking again at the documents on his desk.
He would never send the help he had promised.
Wunder Bridge.
"These people will get the help they need, but not from you! Come back now! That's an order." Sebastian said, turning off the communication feed with Misato.
Everyone on the Wunder bridge was in shock at Commander Sebastian's words. How could WILLE deny aid to a colony about to be attacked? That was what they were thinking.
Misato was standing still. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had no choice but to obey.
"Murderous son of a bitch!" she shouted, mentally irritated. "Well... you heard the commander, abort interception and set course for New England," Misato ordered, annoyed. "I'll be in my office. Ritsuko, is up to you."
"Right," was Ritsuko's response.
Misato went back to her office, making sure to close the door this time. She sat down in her chair, opened the video feed of Shinji's cell and realized that he was still staring at the ceiling, with a lost look on his face.
"I'm sorry, Shinji," Misato spoke, again feeling the need to cry.
Misato wanted to go into the cell just to hug him, to ask for forgiveness for the way she treated him. She was feeling like crap for not doing something sooner. - I'm just like my father... sorry Shinji! - Misato laid her head in her arms and began to cry freely.
Eva's Cages - Wunder
Mari was upset that they didn't have to battle anymore. She was one of the few people in the world who loved piloting. She loved the feeling of power that her pink Eva brought, she loved being submerged in LCL, she loved every second of it.
Asuka didn't know what to think about Mari. She too liked flying, but as the years went by she gradually lost her desire for Eva.
- Wow, Mari; you look like Kensuke. - Thought Asuka as she saw Mari chattering about her annoyance that they "ran away" from the battle. – Nerd stooge. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I'm missing the two stooges... Hiraki... how I wish you were here to help me with Shinji today. -
"Well, at least I can go visit the Puppy early," Mari spoke, turning to Asuka who was lost in her own world.
Seeing that something was wrong with her, Mari was determined to extract some information from Asuka. "Our Princess... what bug bit you? Are you thinking about the cub?" Mari asked with her smile on her face.
Asuka stared at Mari and was mentally debating whether to tell what she had heard or not.
"Geez Mari... you're boring today," Asuka growled. "Yes... was I thinking of the brat just now. Happy?"
Mari's smile grew longer.
"No," Asuka spoke as she raised her index finger.
But that didn't stop Mari from screaming at the top of her lungs as she jumped around raising her hands.
"That is very cute!" she shouted, drawing the attention of everyone in the cage.
Asuka was now redder than her hair. She wanted to run and hide somewhere to get away from the humiliation Mari was doing to her. After all, she was an elite pilot and could not be seen like this.
Asuka at this point was getting ready to run away when she was stopped by Mari, who was much calmer.
"Sorry Princess, I couldn't resist... but tell me everything," she said, excited, as she pulled Asuka into her room to hear the whole story.
- What the fuck did I do?! – Asuka thought as she was being dragged along by Mari. "Enough, four eyes! Let go of me!"
"Only if you tell me everything," Mari spoke with pleading eyes.
"Okay, but if you tell anyone Mari... I swear... you'll regret it and I'm not kidding this time," Asuka threatened.
"Okay, I swear," Mari at this point raised the little finger of her hand in expectation of Asuka taking the oath.
"Grow up, Mari... now let's go before I change my mind," Asuka said, going to Mari's room.
Sakura was heading back to the medical wing of Wunder. With the combat cancelled, she preferred to return to where she thought she would be most useful.
- I still don't know why they want me near the cages of the Evas... what could I do there? - Sakura was thinking while she walked.
At this point she began to think about Asuka and Shinji's return. She was thinking about what she would say to Shinji, since she had been assigned to perform the physical exams on his person that day.
- What am I going to talk to him about?... Hello?... no... I don't know... - Sakura thought in annoyance as she raised her hand and started scratching her head.
At this moment, Sakura began to hear a commotion coming from the cages of the Evas. She stopped and turned around with a curious look on her face. Sakura always scolded herself for being too curious, for she knew that this impulse would get her into trouble one day.
When she was looking through the corridor, she saw Mari chattering, very excited, together with Asuka. She quickly tried to hear what she was saying, but to no avail. She decided to just pass beside them to spy on the conversation, and afterwards invent an excuse to leave. Soon after thinking of her plan, Sakura left her hiding place and started to walk towards Mari and Asuka. When the former noticed Sakura arriving, she became even happier.
"Sakura! Sakura!" Mari shouted and gestured anxiously.
Sakura, who was trying to look like she was casually walking through the cages, replied cheerfully. "Hello girls."
As she approached the pilots, Sakura felt a tug on her arm. Mari was now restraining her, preventing her from moving forward.
"You're coming with us!" Mari said.
"Four eyes... what did I say?" Asuka growled.
"It's just Sakura! Look at her face... you can trust her," Mari was speaking with pleading eyes.
"No," That was Asuka's dry reply.
"Please, it's easier this way. I was going to end up telling her anyway..." Mari begged.
"How nice to know that your word is worthless, four eyes," Asuka attacked Mari.
"Guys, what's going on?" asked a curious Sakura, uncomfortable about the situation.
"Nothing," was Asuka's response.
"It's not 'nothing' … She will tell me why she's being so weird these days," Mari answered, with a smile on her face.
Sakura was now wide-eyed. She loved gossip, and this was something she couldn't miss.
"Captain Shikinami, I swear I won't tell anyone," Sakura begged.
"Look, Suzuhara; I'm not an open book where everyone can take a look," Asuka replied.
"Oh... ok, then," Sakura said with her head down.
- Damn... Sakura is sad now. Well, she's always been nice to me... maybe she can help... maybe. – Asuka thought with annoyance and pity as she looked at Sakura's state.
After and uncomfortable few seconds of silence, with Sakura's downcast look and Mari's pleading eyes, Asuka decided to give in. "Okay," she replied, almost in a whisper.
"What? I didn't hear," Mari replied, smiling from ear to ear.
Sakura was also smiling and relieved, but it didn't last long, because Asuka approached her threateningly. Sakura took some steps back and leaned against the wall. She was cornered.
Staring at her with a fierce look, Asuka spoke: "Sakura, if you tell anyone about this, and when I say anyone I mean anyone, I will... end... you."
Sakura knew that Asuka could be quite cruel at times. She remembered healing the wounds of people who had tried to take advantage of her, and she wouldn't want to be Asuka's next victim. She could only nod in agreement, as she was too terrified to speak.
"I'm glad we're clear," Asuka answered as she patted Sakura on the shoulder. "Now let's go before I change my mind."
The trio started walking. Mari was beside Sakura, with one of her smiles on her face. She knew Sakura would be quiet, but this revelation would give her more fuel for her jokes with Asuka. She couldn't wait to know what the revelation would be, but she already had an idea.
No one spoke until they reached Mari and Asuka's room. Sakura began to look around at the mess inside.
Their room consisted of a bunk bed, a small living room with a television, a video game console, a closet next to the bed, and a small room that led to the bathroom. But what caught Sakura's attention was the amount of clothes and towels strewn about.
Sakura had only gone to the pilots' room once. After that, every time she met Mari it was in her own room.
Mari, when noticing Sakura's gaze at the pile of clothes, asked: "What is it, Sakura?"
"Nothing," Sakura replied as she scratched the back of her head.
"No 'nothing' girl. Spit it out at once," Mari ordered, feigning false indignation. She knew the room was messy, but she wouldn't miss the opportunity to mess with Sakura.
Sakura, knowing she couldn't run away from Mari, replied timidly: "It's kind of in disarray."
Mari, a confused look on her face, started looking around the room. "I don't see anything... for me it's okay."
"Of course it's not 'okay' four eyes," Asuka growled, emphasizing the word with her hands.
"I think I'll call the Puppy here," Mari spoke up. "Wasn't he the one cleaning the apartment you shared with him?"
Sakura at this moment was blushing, with her eyes wide open. - Did Captain Shikinami and Shinji live together? -
"It wasn't like that, four eyes!" Asuka shouted, blushing heavily. "Don't forget that there were three of us in the apartment!"
After saying this last sentence, Asuka strongly regretted it, because she knew, from the look Mari was now giving her, that she would comment about it.
Mari flashed the most mischievous smile she could summon, and spoke: "So, who was the other girl? Were you guys in a threesome?"
Asuka was looking in pure shock, her face flushed furiously.
Sakura let out a muffled scream, blushing as well.
"Not like that, four eyes!" Asuka shouted. "It was me, the brat, and Colonel Katsuragi! "
"So there were two women and one man?" Mari spoke, smiling. "Interesting."
"Enough of your perverted talk, four eyes! Do you want to hear it or not?" spoke an annoyed Asuka.
"Fine, fine… but don't blame me for having an active imagination," Mari said, with a mischievous smile on her face, as she sat down on the floor.
Sakura was doing her best to be as invisible as possible. She sat down next to Mari on the floor and waited for Asuka to begin, but the image of Shinji, Asuka and Colonel Katsuragi having a threesome started to appear in her head and she started to blush.
Mari was laughing softly upon noticing this, guessing what Sakura must have been thinking. Asuka had a look of shock on her face and spoke "My God, you are all a bunch of perverts."
Sakura was taken out of her trance by Asuka's phrase and began to stutter: "No... no... I wasn't thinking about that..."
"I know, Sakura, I know," Mari said.
Asuka huffed wearily and began to speak while scratching her forehead. "Can I start now?"
"It should have started already," Mari said.
Asuka took a deep breath and began talking, with her head down. "It all started in the red earth. The three of us were walking when Shinji only answered the clone's questions and not mine... this made me very angry... do you know how I don't like being ignored?"
"Oh, we do know..." Mari spoke as she shook her head, lost in some memory. Sakura only nodded.
"So, I confronted him and... well... let's just say I hit him," Asuka said with a little embarrassment on her face.
"I knew that cut on the head was no accident," Mari spoke as she clapped her palms together.
"Not that, you idiot. I just slapped him," Asuka, said looking away.
Mari knew that Asuka must have done more than just slap him; but she let her continue with the story, because her curiosity was killing her.
"Then, I confronted him... said some things I wanted to talk about... and he started crying and saying that he was sorry and... that he cared about me... and that the idea of me getting hurt had broken him," Asuka finished her sentence by blushing slightly.
"Ohhhhhhhhhh!" Mari and Sakura responded in unison.
The girls' reaction could only make Asuka's blush increase more.
"That was all?" Mari asked, looking a little disappointed.
"No," Asuka replied as she looked down.
Flashback
Somewhere in Tokyo 3 - Red Earth.
Asuka was sitting, cross-legged, leaning against a rock, waiting for rescue to arrive and mentally wondering:
- What did the brat mean by "cares about me"? -
"That he cares." The voice in her head spoke.
- I know... but he cares how? - Asuka thought in annoyance.
"Ask him." The voice continued. "One day it may be too late."
Asuka didn't know how to answer that last part. She wished she had the courage to ask, but she knew she couldn't confront Shinji like that.
- Maybe four eyes knows. - Asuka thought as she realized that Shinji and the clone were out of sight.
"No... no...no," she stood up quickly and began to look around for any sign of them. "Where could they have gone?" Asuka felt fear starting to grow inside her.
"Brat!" she started to shout. "Brat!"
Asuka climbed up on a rock and realized that not so far away there was a small lake. By some miracle of fate, it was still crystal clear, and she could see the two of them standing next to each other at the shore.
- That brat is going to learn. - Asuka thought angrily as she started walking towards the duo. - Misato would kill me if I lost them now. -
As she approached the lake she saw that they were just standing there, like two statues, looking at the sun as it started to set. Asuka couldn't help but think that it was a beautiful sight. It was hard to find a good view in that world from hell.
"Ikari," Rei called out for Shinji.
She was thinking about the scene she had witnessed a while ago. She hadn't quite understood the feeling involved and wanted to ask Shinji for some help.
Asuka, upon hearing Rei's call, stopped in place. She was seeing the opportunity to get some information. She noticed that there was a tree a few meters away from them, and she decided to hide there and listen to their conversation.
"Yes, Rei?" was Shinji's response.
"Just now you said you cared about me and Captain Shikinami," Rei said. "But what does that mean?"
"It means I don't want any harm to come to you two," spoke a depressed Shinji, still not taking his eyes off the setting sun.
"I see," Rei said, facing the setting sun again.
A silence reigned between the two. Asuka was already thinking about surprising them both when she heard Rei call Shinji again.
"Ikari," Rei said, with a soft voice. "Do you have romantic feelings for Captain Shikinami?"
Asuka was paralyzed in place at that question, but she felt a need to know.
- Why do I want to know the answer? What is this feeling? - thought Asuka as she felt herself growing impatient at Shinji's lack of response.
"I don't know," was Shinji's simple answer, and Asuka was already getting frustrated with that.
- Brat, some concrete answer for once in your life. - she thought anxiously. She needed to know.
"I always… felt something... but I don't know what it is. I've always admired her. Her courage, her determination, her beauty... she never gives up trying to be the best. For me, she always has been..." Shinji replied, with sadness in his voice. "She has always been everything I will never be."
After a few seconds, he continued. "I always felt nervous around her. I always hated to see her sad... she has a beautiful smile..." Shinji spoke, lowering his head.
Asuka couldn't see from where she was standing, but Shinji was smiling as he answered Rei.
"You know, Rei? It wasn't the bomb choker that hurt me the most when I woke up, but the looks of disappointment I received from the people I loved. Knowing that I had..." Shinji couldn't hold back the tears streaming down his cheeks. He pulled himself together a little he continued. "The way things are now... I have no doubt there will be a fight over who will be the person to turn on the machine that will kill me. It is sad to see that everyone will be happy when I die."
"...I should have let Asuka kill me when I was fighting her in the Eva," Shinji concluded, somberly.
Asuka was in shock. She was beginning to feel like crying for the things she was hearing. - How can he think such a thing?... Can't he see that I wasn't even trying? - Asad Asuka thought, lost in the words Shinji had spoken about her.
- What is this feeling I am feeling? - Asuka felt something in her chest.
"I understand. And for me?" Rei asked
"Sorry, Rei; I like you, but... I always saw you as... as a sister," Shinji replied clumsily to Rei. "I'm sorry."
"Don't worry, Ikari," Rei spoke up. - He sees me as part of his family... what is this feeling? - Rei thought as she looked at her reflection in the water.
Asuka knew that the conversation was over. She pulled himself together, came out of her hiding place and addressed the pair.
"Hey!" she spoke up. "Where do you guys think you're going?"
Shinji turned to her and spoke, looking down, "I'm sorry."
Asuka huffed, but before she could answer, she began to hear what sounded like a ship approaching.
"There," Rei spoke, pointing to an incoming transport vessel.
Asuka opened her backpack and reached for her binoculars, putting them on her eyes to get a better look at the ship.
She didn't realize that Shinji was staring at her right now. A feeling of fear was in him, partly because he was imagining what they would do to him. However, another part couldn't help but wonder if she had heard what he had just said.
"It's WILLE!" Asuka spoke with conviction as she reached for a flare and the radio in her backpack.
She promptly lit the flare and started waving it to get the attention of the transport, which began to change direction towards the site.
"Captain Shikinami, is that you?" a pilot asked over the radio.
"Yeah, who else would be, idiot?" Asuka growled back.
"We are making the approach for landing," a voice answered.
"Good," was Asuka's response.
At this moment she turned to Shinji and Rei, and noticed that Rei had the same expression she'd had when joining the group. Shinji, on the other hand, had a downcast look on his face.
Asuka couldn't stop thinking about his words as she looked him in the eyes, which were still lifeless.
End of Flashback
Accommodation - Wunder.
"Ohhhhhhhh! How cute, Princess," Mari was speaking in her overly sweet voice.
Sakura was sitting, looking with a small smile on her face.
"I knew it would be a bad idea to tell you guys," Asuka spoke with annoyance and fear of the reactions she would get from both. "So… what do you think?"
"Wow, isn't it obvious?" Mari began to speak.
Somewhere in New Germany.
A man was sitting in a small apartment, looking at the documents he had gotten from WILLE's system.
"What are you up to, Sebastian?" he asked no one in particular.
The man was reading a sheet that only described the state of NERV's systems during the third impact, because according to the Magi, at the time of the cataclysm, some camera systems were still working, not fried like the others.
"If I can get that footage I can show the truth," spoke the man as he smiled, knowing he had proof. He just needed to get it.
He stood up and reached for his cell phone on the table. He wrote a message to two phone numbers.
It said: Iron Maiden and Bunny, here is Watermelon. How are you? Long time no see. Will be in town in two days, let's catch up.
After a few seconds, two new messages came back, one from each numbers. They were encrypted, but the man knew what they meant.
Iron Maiden: Sure Watermelon, it's really been a long time. See you soon, bro.
Bunny: Yes, as soon as I visit my teacher I will .
The man couldn't help but smile. - The truth will come out, I just hope it will be in time - He thought, starting to get ready to leave the apartment.
Upon leaving the place where he was hiding, the man looked up at the New Berlin night sky while smoking a cigarette.
- It will be a long way to New England. - He thought, dropping his cigarette on the ground and walking towards the field where a car was parked.
Inside the car there was a picture of a person. When looking at the picture, the man smiled again. - I just hope you are still the person I think you are. - He thought as he put the photo in his jacket's pocket and started to drive towards New England.
