Chapter 05 - It Began
NERV
Fuyutsuki was sitting next to Gendo in the partially destroyed office. He wondered if it was wise to continue to support that plan they had devised together, especially now that Shinji was in possession of WILLE and they were on their way to New England for his trial.
Kozo looked out of the corner of his eyes. Gendo was still unperturbed in his classic position, his hands clasped together in front of his face and his posture immobile. Fuyutsuki knew the reason for this particular position, but wondered if it was still necessary to try to keep all his emotions hidden or if it had become a habit.
"Why do you still sit like that, Ikari?" he asked with a slight curious tone.
"Does it matter?" was Gendo's dry reply.
"I still wonder what Yui saw in you," Kozo said.
This question was not lost on Gendo, who stared at his old teacher through his glasses. Kozo didn't notice because of the tint, which did not allow any gap to see the commander's eyes.
"And who would've been better for her? You?" was Gendo's annoyed reply.
- Who does this old man think he is to doubt Yui's love? - Gendo thought while still staring at Kozo.
Fuyutsuki knew he had hit a nerve by asking the question, but he was already beginning to doubt if the scenario he had planned with Gendo would be possible. He could feel the commander's eyes on him, but he also knew how to keep his posture in tense moments. He had been in meetings with the SEELE committee before, where he'd also had to keep the appearances, even if he was not as good as Gendo.
"Ikari... how are the mass production Evas?" Kozo asked without lifting his eyes from the book he was reading. He was referring to the nine Evangelion units produced in secret by the Human Instrumentality Committee, and that hadn't been ready at the time of the third impact.
Gendo had managed to appropriate the unfinished units before NERV was considered a terrorist institution. Fuyutsuki still couldn't understand how they had finished building those white beasts, as he had nicknamed them.
"100% and ready. Why the question?" Gendo said in his monotone voice.
"Will you use them to get your son back?" Fuyutsuki asked curiously.
"No," was Gendo's dry, single-minded reply. "They will stay here to stop any invasion attempt by WILLE."
"I see," Kozo spoke as he faced the book in front of him again and asked. "So how do you plan to bring him in so that we can complete the scenario?"
A silence reigned for a full minute in Gendo's partially destroyed office, in which he let out a small smile that Fuyutsuki couldn't see due to the position of his hands. Then, he answered:
"He will come... one way or another."
Fuyutsuki only gave a small nod and went back to focusing on his book. However, his attention was not on the pages, but elsewhere in his mind.
- I would like to know, Ikari... what are you planning? - He thought with a hint of annoyance. He didn't like being left out of Gendo's plans, but he knew that the older Ikari had never been 100% honest with him, not even in the best days of NERV.
- Yui. - That was Kozo's final thought, and he went back to his book.
Wunder - Bathrooms
Hideki Tama had been cleaning the toilets of the entire Wunder for two days already. That was his punishment for disrespecting his superior officer. Each day, after finishing his duties on the bridge of Wunder; he would start cleaning the ship's toilets, which consisted of 97 in total. His punishment, which had been planned to last one month, was accompanied by a 50% reduction of his salary for 2 months.
Hideki Tama was mopping the floor when he saw Koji entering the bathroom. The older man noticed Tama working, gave him a debauched look and spoke.
"Didn't I say that you young people should learn to shut up?" Koji said as he peed into the wall urinal.
"Shut up old man," was Tama's irritated response as he scrubbed the floor.
"You still haven't learned, have you?" Koji spoke in a disappointed, shaking his head. "What were you thinking, calling the Colonel a 'freak'?"
Annoyed, Koji stared at Tama through the mirror as he washed his hands, making sure to shake them towards the floor so that the splashes of water would fall where Hideki had already cleaned up.
"Hey! I had already cleaned up there, old fool!" Tama shouted. "Besides, she was crying while watching that killer on the security camera. How can she feel sorry for someone like that?"
Tama shouted that in annoyance as he gestured with his hands, throwing the cleaning squeegee to the floor to take out his anger. Thinking that Koji had given up on the discussion, thinking that he had already won; Tama made the mistake of continuing, his young recklessness not really knowing the moment to shut up.
"That bitch Katsuragi... if she's feeling so sorry for him, have her go to his cell and fuck him." Tama said, in hopes of ending the discussion victorious.
Koji could be many things in his life. He had done things he wasn't proud of, but he believed in second chances. He was someone true to his ideals and an exemplary military man. He couldn't let a boy who probably didn't even have pubic hair disrespect his superior officer. He trusted Colonel Katsuragi with his life.
The moment Koji heard the last sentence, his peaceful face changed to an annoyed expression few people had ever seen. His anger rose to such a level that he couldn't control himself and he jumped forward to grab Tama by the neck and hold him against the bathroom wall.
Hideki Tama was paralyzed with fear before Koji's. He could only try to defend himself and loosen the old man's firm grip; but he failed. He thought Koji was right, he really should learn to shut up.
At this moment, a Wunder crewman entered the bathroom and was confronted with the scene. He found himself frozen in place, only able to stare at Koji holding Tama against the bathroom wall. After a few seconds, Koji noticed the boy standing in the doorway and spoke in a firm tone, without taking his eyes off Tama.
"What are you looking at, boy?"
"Nothing sir... I... saw nothing," those were the only words he could stammer out.
"Good... now go pee somewhere else," Koji said in a firm tone of voice.
The boy just turned and walked out of the bathroom at a brisk pace.
Koji realized he was alone again, and thus spoke to Tama in the most threatening tone he could manage.
"Listen here kid! You think you're so cool, don't you? But listen here... no one... no one talks about Colonel Katsuragi like that. If she was crying for the boy that's her problem and not yours! If you say anything like that again I'm going to finish you off! You understand?!" Koji said without taking his eyes off Tama's.
By this time, Tama was too scared to answer, paralyzed by the look Koji was giving him. He just nodded in response. However, that was not the answer Koji wanted to hear, so he asked again, raising his tone of voice.
"I asked if you understood brat?!"
"Yes... Yes... Yes sir," Tama anxiously replied as he broke into a cold sweat before Koji's gaze.
"Good," was Koji's response. "Now, clean that shit up. That's what you deserve for being a dumb brat."
Koji let go of Tama, retreated from the bathroom and walked back to the bridge, still annoyed by the insubordination.
Hideki Tama could only stand, massaging the spot where Koji had grabbed him. He had never seen his colleague so angry before, and his words kept echoing in his mind. - I really must grow up. - Tama thought as he went back to cleaning the bathroom floor. He still had a lot of work ahead of him, and for a long time.
- I should have broken that brat's face to teach him some respect. - Koji thought angrily as he walked back to the bridge and sat down in his seat. He couldn't help but direct his gaze to where Misato and Ritsuko were standing.
- I know how it feels ma'am... your concern for someone important in your life... I know...- Koji thought ruefully as he returned to his role.
After a few hours of work, the bridge crew was getting ready for their shift change when the approach alarms began to sound.
"Situation!" Misato shouted as she came out of her office.
"Three Mark.04 units just showed up, ma'am!" Hyuga shouted as he typed frantically on his keyboard.
"Sound the alarm for battle stations level one!" Misato ordered. "I want everyone on standby!"
"Yes ma'am!" everyone on the bridge shouted.
Wunder flied toward the enemy, who was positioning himself to attack the sky fortress.
"Slow down, don't let them surround us!" Misato shouted.
"Right!" Sumire Nagara shouted as she began maneuvering the large ship through the air, hoping to be able to prevent enemy units from getting in a position of advantage.
"Prepare the cannons with penetrating ammunition!" Misato ordered.
"Ready!" Nagara shouted.
At this point Wunder was maneuvering so they could get in the best possible shooting position. As they got in line with the target, Misato yelled:
"Fire!"
Wunder's powerful cannons started firing; each shot contained a large amount of energy. Hundreds of shots were launched from the cannons towards the Mark.04 units, which could only dodge and deploy their AT fields to defend themselves.
The Mark.04 units were agile and dodged the attacks with ease. This annoyed Misato. Wunder was not being fast enough.
At the moment of the battle, Shinji was in his cell. He could hear everything that was happening, hear every sound of feet running down the corridors, feel every movement Wunder made, every vibration of the shots. He could only curl up into a ball and wail.
"It's all my fault... it's all my fault..."
At the time of the battle, Asuka and Mari were running toward the Evas' cages, to stand guard.
"Haaa! This is too good!" Mari shouted with excitement. "I love the adrenaline rush of a battle."
Mari at this point was inside her entry plug, starting to initialize her EVA.
Asuka was in another hangar, booting up an adapted Jet Alone. This was not the best way to battle, it didn't come close to the mobility and strength of an EVA; but it could do quite a bit of damage and serve as a backup to one.
"Piece of junk!" Asuka shouted as she kicked the inside of Jet Alone's entry plug. "Work!"
The Jet Alone refused to turn on because its systems were not yet ready. It was still being upgraded to be used by a human pilot. WILLE was prioritizing EVAS with the maintenance teams.
"Trouble there, princess?" Mari asked in a mocking tone.
"Go screw yourself, four eyes!" Asuka shouted as she continued kicking the unit.
It was then that Misato's voice came over Mari and Asuka's radios, her tone indicating that she was in a hurry and worried.
"Mari, Asuka; how are things going over there?
"All good here, I'm ready for deployment if needed." Asuka heard Mari talking over the radio. She was starting to get jealous of Mari as she still had an EVA to fight, while she knew she wouldn't have an EVA for quite some time.
"I'll be ready as soon as this garbage turns on!" she shouted in frustration, kicking the equipment again in hopes of getting it to work.
"Right... Maya do something!" Misato asked.
Maya, while frantically typing on her keyboard and giving orders at the same time to her team, was also trying to understand why Jet Alone didn't want to activate.
"I'm trying!" Maya shouted into the radio as she worked as fast as she could.
Wunder - Bridge.
Misato was starting to get frustrated with the situation. The Mark .4 units were killing her mood, they were proving to be very agile, more than usual.
- We have to do something, we can't just keep shooting in all directions and hope we hit... - Misato thought frantically as he came up with an idea, but not before Wunder was hit by a series of energy blasts. They weren't strong, but they had enough power to shake the whole ship. Everyone inside Wunder had to hold on to their seats or to anything else they could grab with their hands.
"Use reflective ammunition!" Misato ordered.
The bridge technicians shouted in agreement as they carried out her order.
Misato was holding on as best as she could. The Wunder was shaking violently with each shot it received.
"Change course! Fly at full speed in circles!" Misato shouted.
"Misato! The G-force is going to be too strong!" Ritsuko warned her, only to receive a nod.
"The ship can hold out for a while," was Misato's dry reply. "Do... don't let them keep circling Wunder."
"Yes ma'am!" the helmsman shouted as he began to maneuver the immense ship into the ordered movement.
As the speed of the Wunder increased, everyone inside the fortress began to feel the effects of the G-force on their bodies.
"When they are in the crosshairs, open fire with the reflective ammunition! Fire on my signal!" Misato ordered.
As the Wunder spun and gained speed, the Mark.04 units began to enter the firing range. They were surrounding the ship and firing, in hopes of doing major damage; but their shots could only scratch it. The AT field protecting the Wunder was too strong to be broken so easily.
After a few turns, the mighty fortress was in position, everyone inside the bridge was thankful for this, for the G-force was already starting to bother.
When the aim seemed to be at the right moment, Misato shouted.
"Fire!"
Wunder's large cannons roared. Each reflective round fired was doing its job, they were reflecting and returning towards the Mark.04 units. Misato could only pray that they had enough energy to pierce their AT fields.
A rain of shots began to hit the AT fields of the enemy units. They were not enough to destroy them but managed to corral the enemy so that the main cannons could finish them off.
"Hold reflective fire! Prepare the main cannons for fire with armor-piercing ammunition!" Misato ordered.
"Right!" Midori shouted from her post. "Ready!"
By firing reflective ammunition, Wunder was able to slow down the Mark.04 units, and also slow down the spin speed and alleviate the G force that was punishing them.
"Fire!" Misato shouted as he saw that the enemy units were in Wunder's sights.
All available weapons opened fire, the sound of the cannons firing could be heard from miles away. Each shot that tore through the air hit the Mark.04 units, and the piercing rounds were able to break through the AT fields, inflicting great damage on the enemy.
In a single barrage of thousands of shots, the Mark.04 units were destroyed, and only the huge energy crosses that symbolized their deaths were left behind. Everyone inside Wunder let out a sigh of relief at seeing that they had managed to win yet another battle.
Misato was noticeably calmer now. She also allowed herself to let out a sigh of relief. "Well done everyone. Good job. Damage report."
Ritsuko was at her panel, analyzing the data she was receiving from the ship's structure.
"Slightly damaged structure... wings 95% functioning... the Wunder is fine," she concluded, with a small smile on her face.
Misato picked up her radio and called the infirmary.
"Injury report!" she said, in a firm tone.
Sakura's voice was heard, anxious about the whole situation but managing to keep calm.
"We have 23 crew members hospitalized at the moment, all with minor injuries, only some concussions. All may be released today."
"Good," was Misato's response.
"Ma'am, this is Lieutenant Maya... the Jet Alone is operational now," Maya's voice was heard on the bridge.
Everyone couldn't help but let out a little laugh at the whole situation, including Misato and Ritsuko. They were about to respond when Wunder shook violently, the alarms wailing again. Everyone could feel that this blow had been much more violent than the previous ones.
"What the fuck was that?!" Misato shouted.
"It's a Mark.9 unit!" Sumire explained from her post. "How are these things managing to circumvent our detection systems?"
"It doesn't matter now!" Misato said as she stood up. "Open fire!"
Wunder began shooting towards the Mark.9 unit. They knew that their blasts would not do much damage to the unit, but they might trap it.
Before Misato ordered the deployment of Mari and Asuka, everyone on the bridge could see the Mark.9 unit had stopped in front of Wunder.
It looked like the Mark.6 units; the only difference being the color. It was completely silver and shone when reflecting the sunlight. The people on the bridge couldn't help but think it was a beautiful and intimidating sight. Alas, they couldn't just stand there admiring the unit. They had to destroy it.
The Mark.9 raised its hand towards Wunder and fired again. The ship tried to deflect it, but only managed to get hit in the side of its body, opening a hole in the fuselage.
"Shit!" Misato cried as she held on to the bridge with all her strength.
The Mark.9 unit approached the Wunder. As it landed on its wing and began walking towards the body of the ship, Misato ordered Mari and Asuka to deploy and destroy the enemy.
Wunder - Cages
"That's it!" Mari shouted as she was implemented, popping her knuckles. "Let's see if you can defeat me!"
Mari's unit deployed a few meters away from the invading unit. The Mark.9 unit stopped its way to the bridge and turned to face the pink EVA.
"What are you looking at, you ugly thing?" Mari shouted as she drew her gun and began firing toward the enemy.
Her shots seemed to have had no effect on the Mark.9 unit. Mari knew this fact, but could use it to slow the enemy unit's advance.
On the other side of Wunder, Asuka was being deployed. She was aware that a Jet Alone could do nothing against an EVA, but she could help Mari destroy it. Perhaps she could get its attention and give Mari the chance to kill it.
Carrying a positron rifle, Asuka positioned herself at a safe distance, aimed at the enemy unit and fired.
The shot tore through the air and hit the back of the Mark.9 unit, which roared in pain as it turned and began to charge a shot towards Asuka.
She started to break into a cold sweat when she saw that she would be a target. Her unit did not have an AT field to protect itself, and it wasn't fast enough to evade the shot. Asuka could only shout to Mari: "Four eyes! Do something!"
Mari approached the enemy unit and started trying to punch it, seeking to change its focus. She equipped her EVA with her progressive knife and started trying to pierce the enemy unit's armor, but her blows were useless. The armor was so hard that it seemed that nothing could break through. The Mark.9 unit turned and punched Mari's unit, making it fly a few hundred meters back, landing on Wunder's wing.
"Shit... What's that shit made of?!" Mari shouted. "Princess, get out of there! That unit is not normal!"
Asuka could see the concern in Mari's words. Frozen in place, she could only stare at the Mark.9 unit as its hand began to glow. She refused to run away, her pride would not allow it. Instead, she decided to raise her positron rifle and fire again towards the enemy unit.
Mari, seeing that Asuka didn't seem to be listening, got up and started to run towards the Mark.9. She looked at the energy marker on her unit. She had three and a half minutes left.
"Shit! Princess!" Mari shouted.
Inside the Wunder bridge, everyone had shocked looks on their faces. No one had ever seen a unit this powerful; all their thoughts were of concern. They couldn't help but wonder if all other enemy units would be like that one.
Inside Wunder's cell, Shinji was curled up in a ball, talking to himself while listening to the battle outside.
"Please stop... please stop..." Shinji whimpered on the floor of his cell.
Mari was running towards the Mark.9 unit as fast as she could, planning to punch it with all her might.
As she approached the enemy unit, she realized that Asuka's shots were having no effect on it, because its AT field was protecting it. "The field isn't even wavering!" Mari shouted into her radio.
Realizing that the unit would kill Asuka, Mari extended her AT field to the maximum and punched the Mark.9. She felt her Eva's hand break and pain passed into her own hand, but her goal was completed. She managed to get the enemy unit thrown away.
The Mark.9 unit was recovering from the blow.
Misato ordered them to fire everything they had, but Wunder's shots did nothing to the enemy unit.
"What is that thing?!" Midori cried, scared.
"Keep firing!" Misato shouted. She was beginning to panic.
Back in Shinji's cell, he somehow could feel that the battle was not going well, and he was starting to cry. "Please stop... please stop..." Shinji wept on the floor.
Shinji felt a strange sensation begin to tingle in his body, like a heartbeat. It was the same protective feeling when he was inside Unit One. Now that he knew that his mother was inside the Eva, he was begging her to help somehow.
Everyone looked in shock as the Mark.9 stared at Wunder's bridge. It raised its hand and began to charge his shot. No one could do anything to stop it. This would be the day of their deaths, it would be the day that Wunder would fall.
Misato could only order her crew to fire at the enemy. She knew she was going to fall, but she would not go down without a fight.
At this point, Wunder's bridge started making a strange sound. The systems were no longer responding to the technicians' commands. Everyone started looking around with confused expressions on their faces.
Ritsuko was suspicious about everything. She discreetly looked at the parameters of Unit One and noticed that a large amount of energy was being charged. She saw that its eyes were red and thought. - Interesting.-
"Colonel... Unit One!" Maya's voice could be heard over the radio with desperation. Unit One seemed to be waking up again, its eyes were red and its head began to move from side to side. It didn't seem to be trying to leave, though.
Outside, everyone could sense that something was wrong with Wunder. Mari and Asuka were waiting for Mark.9 to fire the shot that would end the bridge.
As it attacked, everyone was ready to accept their fate; but an AT field wall appeared in front of Wunder's bridge. The whole crew looked as it easily held off the powerful shot from the Mark.9 unit. Everyone was in shock at this, trying to figure out what had defended the ship.
Everyone looked on as the two parts that protruded forward from Wunder's bridge began to emit a light.
A large amount of energy was being charged in these two areas. No one knew what was happening. Only Ritsuko had a small theory, but she needed more data.
Outside Wunder, both Asuka and Mari were paralyzed in shock at the scene that was happening in front of them.
Just as the Mark.9 unit was getting ready to attack again, Wunder released the energy it had been charging. The two points that were accumulating power came together and released a beam of purple light towards the enemy unit. The only thing everyone could see was a large flash engulfing their field of vision, no one knew what was happening.
When the sound of the explosion ceased, Mari's unit ran out of power and shut down, but not before she realized that the Mark.9 was gone. Only a cross remained in its place.
"What the fuck happened?" Mari asked in the darkness of her entry plu. Asuka was asking the same question as she continued to stare at the huge cross.
"Ma'am... Unit One has returned to its previous state... all rates are back to normal," Maya's voice sounded over the radio, now much quieter.
"Okay," was Misato's response.
On Wunder's bridge, no one could believe what they were seeing. Misato knew that it hadn't been any of the ship's weaponry. Nothing of what they had could do something like that. She turned to Ritsuko, whose look showed she had a theory. Misato glanced her in a way that said they would have a conversation later, when tempers calmed down.
After a few hours, damage to the Wunder had been reduced to just medium. Many injured but only a few dead. They knew they had been saved by something; but they didn't know what it was. They were more concerned with the ship's repairs.
Colonel Katsuragi's office - Wunder
"That day was very strange," was Misato's tired reply as she sat down in her chair. Ritsuko was standing in the doorway. She signaled for her to close the door.
"I know that, face Rits. I know you have a theory."
Ritsuko sat down and picked up a cigarette to smoke. She lit it up, took a long drag and let out a cloud of smoke. She was also stressed about everything.
"Unit One protected us," was Ritsuko's simple explanation. "She followed Shinji's request."
Misato stared at her with wide eyes.
"What do you mean?" she asked, confused.
"It was that simple. I was looking at the battle data and saw that Unit One reacted when Shinji was asking for the fight to stop," Ritsuko replied as she took another drag of her cigarette.
"I want to see all the data. Don't put it into the system until we know what is going on..." Misato said, trying to understand everything.
"Okay," that was Ritsuko's response as she smoked, but she didn't stop thinking.
- So, Yui... you can fulfill your son's requests... interesting. - She thought with a smile appeared on her face.
Misato at this moment was drinking a cup of tea and thought. - Shinji... how can you do all this? What have you gotten yourself into? -
A silence reigned in the office.
Detention Center - Wunder.
Shinji was lying down again; looking at the ceiling of his cell, thinking about the battle they had a few hours ago.
"Mom... thank you," he spoke into the nothingness, sure that his mother would hear him. If she could hear a plea for help, she could hear his thanks.
At this moment the door of his cell opened with a sound like pressurized air. Shinji looked to see who it was, because usually, the only part of the door that opened was the compartment where they delivered his food.
Shinji wasn't eating much. He wasn't feeling hungry, but he knew it was affecting him somehow. He could feel himself growing thinner.
Two armed men entered the cell. They stared at him with looks that could only be described as pure hatred. He was only alive because of superior orders.
"Stand up," one of the men ordered.
Shinji obeyed, got up from his bed and leaned against the wall, with his hands behind his head. Even though he had not been instructed to do this, he somehow knew that these would be the guard's next orders.
While one of the men searched him, the other pointed the gun at him. Shinji could only stare at the ground in shame and guilt.
"It's safe," the guard spoke up. "You may enter, doctor."
At this moment, Shinji sat on his bed and waited.
Sakura entered the cell and noticed his condition. She couldn't help but feel that she wanted to cry at the scene. Shinji was clearly malnourished and not healthy at all. She didn't even need an examination to determine that.
She turned to the guards.
"You guys can leave," Sakura spoke in a tone as stern as she could manage.
The guards looked at her with confused faces. They didn't understand how she wanted to be alone with an animal like him. Didn't she know who he was?
"Doctor, we are here for your safety," one of them tried to argue, but Sakura stopped him.
"He won't hurt me," was her simple response.
The men were hesitant for a moment, but after a few seconds, they nodded and left the cell. Sakura only began to speak when door closed and they were alone.
"Shinji," she called out, but got no response.
"Shinji!" Sakura tried again, a little harder.
"I'm listening, doctor," Shinji spoke, without lifting his eyes from the ground. He couldn't face her.
"Then look at me, Shinji," Sakura was looking at him all the moment. She was not angry. Quite the contrary, she was sorry.
Shinji turned and looked at Sakura. His eyes were lifeless, just as Asuka had spoken just after her return to Wunder five days before. Sakura thought, with sadness: - How can a person be so broken like this? -
In a restaurant - New London - New England
A man was sitting at a table, drinking a mug of beer and waiting for the arrival of his two "Friends" that he had spoken to on the phone.
After a few minutes of waiting, two people entered the place. Promptly recognizing them, the man waved his hand to attract their attention. They sat down at the same table.
"How are you doing, Kensuke?" the man asked, cheerfully.
"I'm doing fine, thank you. What about you, Kaji? I see old age has done you good," Kensuke said.
"I look great for a 44-year-old guy, I'm still handsome," answered Kaji with his trademark smile. Then, he turned to the other man next to him. "How about you, Bunny?"
"Stop calling me that!" Toji said in frustration. "That's all and my wife's and Kensuke's fault! The asshole…"
"Hahaha" Kensuke could help but laugh. Kaji was containing a chuckle, but threw a smile to Toji.
"So, guys... here's the thing: I believe we all agree that Shinji is innocent, right?" Kaji asked as he looked at the two in front of him, who just nodded in agreement.
"Good," Kaji removed a notebook from his briefcase and showed it to Toji and Kensuke. "This is information that I rescued from the Magis. They show that some security cameras were running at the time of the third impact, so I need your help to get those images."
"How can we help?" Toji asked.
Toji and Kensuke worked for WILLE. The former was in equipment and ship maintenance, while the latter worked for intelligence. He was always good with computers and electronic things in general.
"I need a breach of WILLE's system. I need to get those files," Kaji spoke with determination.
"The perfect time will be 10 days from now, because we will be doing a system upgrade and that's when the defenses will be most vulnerable," Kensuke explained while having a thoughtful face.
"We can make up an excuse and go straight to WILLE's servers," Toji added. "While the system is down, we can go in and get the files. I think you can get through security, can't you?" Toji asked Kaji.
"Get me in there, give me a breach and I'll do the rest," Kaji said, with a genuine smile on his face.
He called the waitress and ordered himself another beer, and Toji and Kensuke also ordered one.
After the waitress returned with the orders, Kaji raised his mug and spoke with determination. "Gentlemen, let's reveal the truth and save an innocent man."
Toji also raised his mug. "Let's fucking do that!"
Kensuke did the same. "Let's do it!"
After they toasted, Kensuke spoke up: "Toji… what would Hikari think of you cussing in public like that?"
"If you tell her I will kill you, Kensuke!" Toji growled. "She's still a tyrant regarding 'public behavior guidelines,'" Toji gestured with his hands to emphasize Hikari's words.
"Your fault for marrying a college professor," Kensuke rebutted, grinning. Kaji stared at the two. He smiled and thought it was nice to have moments to relax after all.
"At least I got married! You never even admitted you were in love with Rei Ayanami," Toji attacked in an attempt to break his friend.
Kensuke changed the expression on his face, but recovered quickly and retorted with indignation: "I always admitted it to you! You knew it back then!"
"Dude, you know she was a clone, right? Kaji asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Now I know, but back then it was different. I can't explain... I've seen other Ayanami types, but... that one was different... I can't explain it," Kensuke was looking at his glass as he remembered that Rei, with a small smile on his face.
"Well… that's in the past. Let's prepare our ambush," Kensuke raised his head, smiling, and went back to talking about it with Toji and Kaji.
Wunder
As the day was winding down, the Wunder resumed its way to New England. The heavier repairs were to be done while the ship was docked at the WILLE base on the outskirts of New London.
Everyone inside the ship couldn't be happier. Some would have some free time to explore the city, others would go out drinking with friends, but some were worried about a certain event that would happen on that day.
Shinji's trial.

Special thanks to YourBlandestNightmre, for correcting the English errors, thanks buddy.
