How Much is that Turtle in the Window
ch 33
Feeling lightheaded, Mikey stared muzzily ahead of him, wondering at the way everything about him wobbled and wavered in his sight. He took another deep breath only for his heart to beat wildly as he realised there was nothing left in the tank. He'd struggled with his last few breaths but hadn't realised why. To his alarm, now he knew.
Concentrating, he tapped shakily against Donnie's side, {No... air, D.}
{What?} Donnie tapped back, whipping his head around to stare at Mikey in horror. He reached past Mikey to tap hard against Raph, gaining his brother's attention and nodding at Mikey before making a shooing motion towards Leo.
Raph gave a quick nod of understanding and released Mikey, who immediately began dragging Donnie down with him as they started to sink to the bottom of the ocean. As Raph swam fast towards Leo who was a little ahead of them, Donnie pulled out his mouthpiece and swapped it with Mikey's.
Relieved but with his heart still fluttering, Mikey took several deep breaths, saturating his lungs and then blinked at Donnie once. At that moment, Raph and Leo came back, taking hold of Mikey and swimming up again and Donnie took a moment to examine Mikey's empty tank. He shook his head at Leo and took out a kunai, cutting through the straps securing it to Mikey and the small group watched solemnly as the empty tank dropped like a rock.
'What now?' Leo's face seemed to ask as he stared worriedly at Donnie for answers.
Donnie shrugged and mimed sharing his mouthpiece with Mikey. Then tapped against Mikey, {Just tap once when you need air, okay?}
{'k,} Mikey replied as he stared at Donnie pleadingly.
{Don't wait until you can't hold on any longer. I mean it,} Donnie tapped sternly
{Promis, D,} Mikey tapped again, his heartbeat still racing beneath his plastron.
Then Leo, canting his head at Mikey, began to hesitantly tap against him as well, {Calm, down, Mikey. You'll use your air too fast at this rate.}
{'k,} Mikey replied shakily. He tried to smile at Leo but wasn't sure how believable it was.
{I can't understand without sound so use your old code.}
'Yes,' he promptly blinked.
Leo nodded sharply and turned to Donnie, reaching over and tapping, {Can you tell how far away they are? Just nod.}
Donnie bit his lip and carefully reached down for his T-phone which was thankfully waterproof. He turned on the screen with difficulty in the water and brought up the tracking map. Then he held it up to Leo as Mikey tapped against Donnie for air.
Leo's face went hard and Raph motioned in annoyance to be included. As Donnie turned the screen, Mikey did his best to see too and his eyes boggled in fright to see the sub nowhere near. He turned to Donnie, {We go up?}
No, Donnie shook his head. {It's fine, Mikey. They should be here in about thirty.}
{Thirty's too long!} Mikey spluttered, the precious oxygen escaping him. Before Donnie could react, Leo ripped out his mouthpiece and gave it to Mikey.
{Calm down, Mikey,} Leo repeated at the same time Donnie did.
Mikey went cross-eyed trying to follow both brothers as they tapped.
{Thirty minutes is plenty of time,} Donnie explained carefully with what was meant to be a reassuring smile. Mikey did not, however, feel reassured.
{I alredy ran out, D,} he insisted frantically. {U will too soon an' L an' R.}
{You're breathing too fast. Calm down and we'll have enough air,} Donnie replied calmly.
Mikey could tell he was trying to curb his irritation but he wasn't quite succeeding and he looked away feeling bad. {Sry,} he tapped but trying to rein in his panic was so hard. Every time he didn't have control it went badly for him. Whether it was chained and beaten by Dogpound, in Mai's surgery, under Hakuba's and Three's mercies or with his brothers and unable to do anything for himself like hold onto something, walk or even swim.
Abruptly, he felt himself being handed off by Raph to Donnie and confused and hurt, Mikey watched him swim around to stop in front of him. Raph fixed him with a determined stare and a small smirk spread upon his face. Then he suddenly leant forward, closing his eyes and pressing his forehead against Mikey's. 'Don't worry, I'm here and I'm not going to let anything hurt you,' he seemed to say.
Mikey stared for a moment and abruptly feeling himself relax and calm down, closed his eyes. Not long later, he felt Raph withdraw and he opened his eyes again, smiling. 'Ty,' he blinked gratefully.
Raph smiled again and pushing Leo out the way, took his place on Mikey's right again.
Mikey took one more breath from Leo's mouthpiece and gave it up and the group began swimming to meet the Turtle Sub again.
-:-
A second tank had emptied and now, having just watched Donnie drop his tank, he and Donnie were sharing Raph's. The panic was beginning to build hard again but Donnie caught his eye, giving him a smile and a thumb's up. Mikey wasn't fooled, however, the edginess was beginning to show in his brother's eyes and the way his fingers fidgeted, as if he ached to get in and fix their problem.
Leo too had watched grimly as Donnie cut free his now useless tank and now he motioned upwards, telling them silently to swim a little closer to the surface. Just in case.
The trio followed Leo but the swimming was hard. They'd been in the water for over three hours by now and were all cold and tired. Mikey could tell his brothers were in the same boat as him so to speak, by the way their strength was beginning to flag and how he was starting to drag them down. Also by the way they snuggled closer as if to share what little body heat they had. Not for the first time, he was glad they weren't purely cold-blooded like normal turtles were but that they'd picked up some of their father's warm-blooded traits when they mutated.
Unable to help himself, Mikey suddenly yawned, drawing in water in the process and he started coughing and spluttering and drawing in more water and causing his throat and chest to ache painfully. He sensed his brothers' alarm and Raph pulled out his mouthpiece, ready to hand it over. Donnie held him off, however, covering Mikey's mouth with both hands and silently encouraging him not to cough when Leo suddenly turned and swam off.
Still coughing, though not as badly, Mikey stared after Leo in betrayal only to see a huge shadow dwarfing his brother. Mikey yelped silently in fright and tried to backpedal but Raph held him firm. A moment later, Donnie grabbed the mouthpiece and put it in his mouth, tapping {Breathe,} before covering his mouth again.
Frantic, Mikey tapped back, {It's going to eat L!} Donnie looked at him in confusion so Mikey motioned with his head and Donnie turned to look, releasing his mouth as he did. When Donnie turned back, he wore a broad grin showing off his diastema and confused, Mikey stared at him.
{It's our ride,} Donnie explained the second he had Mikey's arm draped over him again. A moment later, they were swimming toward the giant shadow, Mikey gawking in a mixture of wonder and trepidation.
The three of them arrived just as Leo opened a hatch in the belly of the metal beast. He motioned to them to come on before swimming up and pulling himself inside.
Donnie and Raph swam up to the hole, shifting Mikey between them and pushing him up where he saw human hands reaching for him. For a moment he baulked in fright but then his head broke the surface and he gasped for air. Suddenly, hands grabbed greedily at his arms, Leo on one side and two young humans on the other.
Mikey eyed them in terror even as he was hauled out of the water, Donnie and Raph pushing at his shell from behind. The girl's face was framed with red hair which was pulled back into a tight ponytail and Mikey relaxed slightly at the familiar feeling she gave off. April. The male, however, was completely unfamiliar and had Mikey freaking in panic again. As soon as he was released, he dashed off to the side as far from them as he could get and stared, trembling and heart beating wildly, as first Donnie and then Raph were similarly helped through the hatch.
"Hello, Turtle-san," a warm voice offered cheerfully in a Japanese accent.
Mikey whirled his head at the sudden voice to see an old man wearing dark glasses seated at some pedals and gazing in his general direction but not quite at him. He seemed familiar and Mikey gazed back at him, surprised by the soft feeling of affection he felt for kindly-looking the man.
"Murakami-san?" Donnie cried, voice high in surprise. "Not that it isn't great to see you but uh, what are you doing here?"
Murakami? Mikey frowned. Why did that name remind him of food and warm mealtimes?
"April-chan asked for my help as she and her young friend needed an extra pair of legs," Murakami explained sedately.
Donnie, Leo and Raph whirled on April.
"We needed the help and it's a good thing he came," April protested. "It would have taken us even longer to get here otherwise and you're already down two tanks," she pointed out, eyeing Mikey and Donnie's shells critically.
"Oh and hey, for the record, I'm a whole year older than Red is!"
His teeth beginning to chatter as he shivered, Mikey shifted his gaze to the strange human, eyeing him suspiciously. This guy didn't even feel the slightest bit familiar.
"That's not something you should be bragging about when you're in the same grade, knucklehead," Raph snorted, slapping the guy hard on the back and almost knocking him over.
"Hey!" the human retorted indignantly, turning and shoving back at Raph, causing him to chuckle in amusement.
Mikey shuffled back further, stiffening with hurt as he watched the friendly camaraderie between the two. So this was the guy his brothers were too busy making friends with to come find him earlier.
"It was good of you to help, Murakami-san," Leo bowed deeply. "We are in your debt."
"Think nothing of it, I am glad to have been able to help."
Suddenly, something large, thick and fluffy landed across Mikey and he jumped, looking up to see April beside him.
"You must be so cold," April exclaimed kindly, crouching down beside him. She began rubbing the towel vigorously against him.
He was but that didn't mean he wanted a human drying him, let alone one he didn't really remember well. Desperate to get away, Mikey tried to shuffle out from under April's hands when Donnie appeared.
"How about you let me do that, April," he smiled nervously as he squeezed in to take April's place.
"Oh, okay but what about you?" April asked, her eyes wide in confusion. "You need to dry off too."
"I can wait a couple of minutes," Donnie nodded as he tapped surreptitiously against Mikey's arm through the towel.
{Are you alright?}
'No,' Mikey blinked anxiously as he shrank in on himself. The last time there'd been so many humans this close to him was back when he was still a dog of the Foot and he didn't like it at all.
"Are you sure?" April asked, her voice filled with concern. "Because I don't mind helping Mikey while you dry yourself."
"I know and I love that about you. I-I mean, I appreciate that April," Donnie correctly quickly, grinning sheepishly as he did, "but honestly, Mikey was badly injured recently and I believe he's feeling a bit overwhelmed with so many people so close right now."
"Oh, okay, well, I... I'll back off then," April conceded reluctantly, colouring in embarrassment as she backed off, "but uh... welcome home, Mikey. We've really missed you."
[How does Lady sound for the name for your soon to be mate?]
Mikey cringed and pulled away from Donnie, trembling as the memory slammed into him all over again.
[Too grandiose? Maybe,] his Alpha laughed raucously, [but what could be more fitting for a female dog once on the cusp of womanhood as a human?]
{Not safe,} Mikey suddenly tapped quietly as he shivered violently with cold and fright.
Donnie frowned as he moved closer and rubbed the towel vigorously against Mikey's skin. "Of course you're safe, Mikey. We're almost home. Just oh... about an hour to go and we'll be there."
'No!' he blinked emphatically, looking up at Donnie desperately, begging him silently to please understand. {April!}
For a moment, Donnie looked shocked and then he laughed nervously, "What are you talking about?" he asked quietly. "It's April, of course she's safe! She wouldn't hurt a fly!"
Mikey grit his teeth, about to slam a paw down to make Donnie listen when his attention was pulled away by Leo.
"April, show Murakami-san to the passenger seating, Casey, you, Raph and I will take us home. Donnie, can you get the engines ready again?"
"Uh, sure, Leo," Donnie said, looking back over his shoulder at their brother. "I'll be back as soon as I can, Mikey. Don't worry, no one in the sub would ever hurt you, okay?"
And then he was gone before Mikey could reply.
-:-
"So April, Casey, did you guys have any trouble getting out to us?" Leo asked crisply once the engine was running again and everyone free to stop pedalling.
"Not much, just the obligatory Foot patrol still in the sewers," April replied tiredly. "We had Murakami-san with us at the time so we had to find another, longer way around."
"I wanted to pound those Footbots into scrap," Casey said brashly, punching a fist into his other hand, "but Red wouldn't let me."
April rolled her eyes in exasperation. "It was too dangerous with Murakami-san with us. Besides, if their positions were being monitored, it would have told the Foot there was something in the area to protect and they might start concentrating their searches for the lair around there! Not something the guys need!"
"Pft!" Casey snorted. "You don't know they were being monitored."
"And you don't know they weren't!" April quickly retorted, exasperated.
"You did the right thing, April," Leo praised with a tired but grateful smile and defusing the situation. "Thank you."
"Anytime, Leo," she smiled back.
With his headache growing and his shivering increasing, Mikey sighed and tried to pull the towel tighter around himself, frustrated when he realised that he needed hands for that just like with his blanket in winter.
"Anyway, that's why it took so long for us to get to you," April continued quietly. "Once we had the sub in the water though, we were free and clear."
Donnie nodded absently. "Well, The Umi Ryuu should have arrived in port over an hour ago so as the Foot will discover we aren't there at any time now, I suggest we be on our guard heading back, just in case they send patrols out into the ocean looking for us."
"Agreed," Leo said grimly, pulling down the periscope. "Everyone who can, take a window and keep an eye out for anything unusual that doesn't belong."
There was a rush of movement as everyone took their places and peered out the windows. Mikey looked around to see if there were any clear windows he could reach to see out of but there was nothing, when suddenly, Casey appeared beside him, grinning down at him. Mikey backed away unhappily.
"Hey there, little dude," Casey grinned broadly down at him from the window he was supposed to be looking out of. "I'm Casey Jones and I bet you're real glad to meet me at last!" he boomed proudly. "Red and your bros have told me heaps about you."
Had they indeed... Mikey bared his teeth in dislike with a faint growl. How nice of them to take a break from making new friends to tell them about him, their pathetic long lost, captured brother.
Taken aback by his unexpected reaction, Casey took a step back, turning to face across the sub. "Hey, Raph?" he called, ever so slightly shocked.
"Yeah?"
"Did... your brother just growl at me?"
"Probably," Raph grunted dismissively. "Don't blame him if he did. You kinda have that effect on people."
"I thought you guys said he was like you but..."
Suddenly feeling ashamed, Mikey stepped back, only to trip on the towel and tumble, becoming entangled in the terrycloth and whacking his head against the ground. Casey immediately crouched beside him, attempting to help him up again and Mikey couldn't help it, he growled again, louder this time and causing Casey to hurriedly back up, a look of alarm crossing his face.
"Yeah, best get away from him, idiot," Raph snorted derisively.
"But I was only..."
"Look, Mikey hasn't had the best experience with humans over the last year," Raph retorted, striding around the perimeter of the sub to step in front of Mikey protectively. "Just, give him some time to get used to you, okay? Now swap windows," he demanded, gesturing with his thumb to the window he'd just been at.
"Uh... okay," Casey replied reluctantly, slinking off the other way to the far window.
Raph crouched down beside Mikey, untangling and helping him upright. "Hey, don't worry about that idiot, he's harmless. Are you okay?"
'Yes,' Mikey blinked, looking down in shame and relief that Casey was gone. For now. {Ty.}
"Yeah, no problem," Raph grunted. He draped the towel over Mikey again before standing up to watch out the window. "You've got plenty of time to get used to him, okay? You don't have to rush."
Mikey swallowed painfully and blinked again. Trouble was, he didn't want to get to know Casey, even if he was his brothers' friend.
"Trust me, you and bonehead are going to get along great!" Raph continued with a knowing smirk. "He's a lot like me, only not as tough or smart."
"Hey, I can totally take you on any day, green man!" Casey called loudly, challenge in his voice.
Mikey turned his head, staring across the room with narrowed eyes at the brash teenager in question.
"See what I mean?" Raph asked before turning and calling back across the submarine, "In your dreams, loser!"
Yeah, he could see how Raph liked him but that didn't mean he would. Either way, there was going to be no escaping Casey's company, that was for sure. Well, he could always stay in his room when Casey was around, assuming he had one of his own of course, but sooner or later, his brothers would expect him to make an effort and that he really didn't want to do. Mikey returned his gaze to the metal floor again, willing the journey to end already. He just wanted to get home, lay down somewhere kinda but not completely dark and quiet and hopefully familiar and get some sleep away from strange people and crowds.
Ugh... his head really was hurting a lot. He closed his eyes tightly, curling in on himself and resting his head on his arm as Raph returned his attention to the window.
"Raph," Donnie called softly sometime later.
"Yeah?" Silence, then, "Oh. Hey, Mikey," Raph said, nudging him carefully.
Mikey peeled open his eyelids, looking up at Raph through bleary eyes.
"Your head hurting again, huh pal?"
'Yes,' he blinked slowly. It always hurt since the storm but it was far worse now, ever since he tripped over the towel and fell not so long ago.
"How bad?" Raph asked gently.
Did he really have to answer? He gave Raph a weary look.
"How bad?" Raph repeated again, this time far more sternly.
Mikey grit his teeth and slowly tapped seven times.
"Really?" Raph asked sounding as if he didn't believe him. "Because you look like you're in a lot more pain than that or... did you forget that one is the highest and ten the lowest?"
Mikey paused. Oh yeah and come to think of it, it wasn't even the first time he'd forgotten that... He blinked up at Raph once before closing his eyes and slumping onto his arm again.
Raph sighed despondently, "I thought we agreed that you tell us these things. Donnie, we got any pain killers in this rust bucket?"
Donnie bristled indignantly. "The Turtle Sub is not a rust bucket! She's a highly sophisticated submersible..."
"Made out of random junk you cobbled together," Raph deadpanned over the top of Donatello. "Yeah, yeah, it's a miracle it hasn't sprung a leak yet. Now, do we have anything? He's bad."
"Maybe in the first aid kit," Donnie replied tiredly. Through slit eyes, Mikey watched him leave his post to search through the storage area, apologising to Murakami for the disturbance as he looked.
"It is no problem, Donatello-san. If you need me to move, please let me know."
Donnie smiled tightly as he rummaged in the locker behind the seat, "You're fine, Murakami-san. Ah-ha! Found it!"
"You really should keep that in a more accessible place, Donnie," Leo admonished sternly.
"And where would you suggest that be, Leonardo?" Donnie asked snippishly. He walked briskly to where Raph crouched by Mikey. "It's not as if there's a surplus of space aboard and it has to be somewhere secure where it won't come loose and cause problems should we come under fire or encounter turbulence of any kind." As he spoke, he opened the box, pulling out a small bottle.
Leo sighed reluctantly, "I see your point but... We have incoming! Donnie, Raph, stations! Casey, take the pedals Murakami-san was at earlier!"
Donnie shot upright, looking at Leo in alarm, "But what about Mikey?"
"April can look after him."
Mikey's eyes snapped wide and he felt sick at the suggestion. {Can wait,} he insisted.
Donnie looked sharply at him, "Not the way you look, you can't!" he snapped. Then he turned, looking towards the centre seat, "Leo, you know that's not a good idea."
"If we are to survive, I need you at your post!"
{D... go... am fine.} Mikey tapped tiredly.
"It's okay, Donnie, I can take care of him," April promised, rushing over and resting a hand briefly on Donnie's wrist. She carefully took the bottle and turning away from him, crouched down beside Mikey, smiling gently at him as he stared wide-eyed with trepidation up at her.
Donnie bit his lip then nodded. "Okay," he relented, racing reluctantly to his station. "April?" he called worriedly as he slipped into his seat.
"Yeah?" she replied, glancing over her shoulder as she acknowledged him.
"He doesn't really remember you, April, so don't push him. Also, he can't speak, so one blink or tap means yes and two for no. Try to get him to take two of those pills but don't be surprised if he refuses."
April's eyes widened and Mikey saw the hurt flash through them momentarily before being pushed aside as she focused back on him.
"Well, now things make more sense," April said quietly, looking him over. She frowned as her eyes lingered on his paws and he clenched his fingers uncomfortably inside of them. Suddenly, the sub rocked as a nearby explosion went off and he heard Leo issuing rapid-fire commands for evasion and shooting back.
April whipped her head around a moment before focusing on him again. "Things are getting bad and it's not really safe to stay on the floor like this. Do you think you can make it to the front of the sub where Murakami-san is? There's seating and seat belts there."
Did he really have to move? Mikey shifted his head to look, wincing at the idea of not just moving but going so near someone he didn't know and trust. But the more he watched the blind man, the more he felt familiar and the more he realised some part of him did trust him.
He struggled to push himself up on all fours, squinting as his vision swam alarmingly. Suddenly, soft yet strong small hands were against his right arm helping to steady him and Mikey flinched, pulling himself away and gasping harshly as he stared at her in fright. At that moment, the sub rocked again, this time more violently and he lost his balance, falling over and knocking April down.
"Oof!" a voice grunted painfully from under him and Mikey winced, shifting to find purchase and pushing himself off the small human girl as quickly as he could without pressing his heavy paws against her.
{Sorry,} he tapped unsteadily, crouching low as the sub was rocked by turbulence again.
Eyes wide, April stared up at him in surprise, "Was that... Morse Code?" she asked, holding her side gingerly as she sat up.
'Yes,' Mikey blinked in sudden hope. {Do u...}
"I'm sorry, I don't know Morse Code, Mikey," April apologised, wincing as she shifted to her knees, "but I promise I'll try to learn it as quickly as possible so you can talk to me again. As soon as we're out of this and home safe," she said. "Okay?"
'Okay,' he blinked, taking a disappointed, unsteady step toward the front of the boat.
The two made their way forward slowly, with April losing her footing twice more, Mikey saved only by the fact he was so low to the ground in the first place and steadied by four limbs instead of just two.
"Yes!" Raph crowed victoriously from behind. "One down, two to go!"
Mikey frowned, turning his aching head back to look at his brothers. Two what? Submarines? Something else? He wished they would explain, he hated not knowing what was going on.
"Come on, we're almost there," April gently encouraged. "Just another few steps to go."
Mikey looked forward again, seeing she was right and then stared in dismay at the seat. It was hard enough even walking right now, between the pain in his head and the way the sub kept violently rocking. There was no way he could climb into that seat with his heavy paws holding him down. He closed his eyes and settled on the ground instead.
"Mikey? What's wrong, we're so close."
Opening his eyes again, he looked up at her then down at his paws, hoping she'd understand.
"May I?" April asked after a moment, reaching down and hovering her hands by his left paw.
'Yes.'
With both hands, April lifted his paw, gasping in shock and dismay. "That's so heavy, Mikey."
Mikey opened his eyes and just looked at her, hoping his face said it all. 'Really.'
"Yeah, I can see how you'd have trouble getting into the chair, even if I tried to help. Okay... new plan," April decided, looking around worriedly. "Right, press yourself into the corner. It's not perfect and not secure but you'll have the walls to help steady you. At least it'll be better than back there in the middle of the floor."
'Okay,' Mikey blinked again, making his way the few steps over to the corner she indicated in the head of the sub.
Just then, the submarine was rocked by another series of close explosions and yells or cries from everyone aboard as they fought to keep balance or seating, followed by another flurry of commands from Leo and he felt a wave of nausea as he flailed desperately for balance.
As soon as the rocking settled, April ran unsteadily across the few steps to one of the storage trunks and rummaged in it. Then she made her way back to Mikey, a bottle of water in hand.
"Donnie wanted you to take two aspirin," she said, digging a small pill bottle from her pocket and holding it up for him to see.
Mikey just stared suspiciously up at her. So?
"Will you take them?" she asked, grabbing hold of the nearest solid object as shouts rang out again, followed by more turbulence and another victory shout by Raph and Casey.
Mikey's gaze shifted to the pill bottle and then water bottle, feeling a cold chill course through him as the memory of being strapped down and forced to swallow strange pills assaulted him. 'No,' he blinked. This was different to the antibiotics he'd had to take back on the Umi Ryuu. He'd rather put up with the pain than swallow those or drink from that.
April smiled sadly and lowered herself to sit by him, "You're not afraid of me, are you, Mikey?"
Mikey gazed back up at her, ignoring his headache. No, he wasn't, he decided. He was afraid for her but not of her. 'No,' he finally answered.
"But... you are afraid of this?" April realised, shaking the pill bottle gently.
Mikey looked away in shame. He shouldn't be, he knew that. Donnie would never intentionally hurt him and neither would April, but... he just couldn't.
"How about if I take some first?" April suddenly asked. "I'm a bit sore too, from one of the earlier falls. If I take some, will you?"
Mikey stared up at her in shock. April smiled at him and unscrewed the lid of the pill bottle, taking out four pills. She popped two in her mouth and then opened the water, taking a large swig to wash them down. When she was done, she held out her hand towards him, canting her head questioningly.
"Your turn?"
Mikey bit his lip for a moment, then blinked in agreement and opened his mouth to accept them.
It would be nice to have some relief for once.
