Chapter 07 - Motivation.
After the trial, Shinji was taken to the cells at the UN detention center. He was depressed, not because of the fact that he had been convicted, but because of what the prosecutor had read. Shinji could not get Misato's words out of his head. Even though she hadn't been the one to read it, he could hear Misato's voice calling him "Monster."
Shinji was laying in his cell, looking at the ceiling, his mind replaying everything that had happened in the courtroom a few hours earlier. He was reflecting.
"An unknown ceiling," Shinji spoke to no one in particular. "I wonder where I will be sent."
"Does it matter?" The voice spoke.
- Yes. - A depressed Shinji replied.
"Why?" The voice asked, with curiosity.
- I don't know... I just thought it would be interesting to know where I will spend the next 15 years. - Shinji thought, dismissively.
The voice stopped talking. Shinji was in the deep silence that his cell afforded him. He had convinced himself that he was used to solitude, but he knew that deep down he hated being alone.
Memories flashed through his mind. They were happy ones, of the times before the third impact, of the times when he had friends, of the times when he had a family. A family that was not blood, but a family that he had not valued enough.
Shinji began to get irritated for all the time wasted trying to get his father's respect and affection. He thought about all the times Misato had tried to cheer him up, but at that time he had been too weak and immature to appreciate it. He had denied all the affection Misato was trying to give him, and he knew that she would one day lose hope in him. He wished he could go back in time and punch himself for being such an idiot.
Shinji laughed to himself as he remembered when he was taken to Misato's apartment, being startled by Pen-Pen coming out of the bathtub and appearing naked in front of Misato, Asuka later moving in with them.
"Asuka," Shinji spoke into nothingness as he stared at the ceiling.
He didn't know how he felt about Asuka. He always was confused around her, but he always felt good when he was next to her. He didn't know why, but he wished he could talk to her at least once more. He wished he could apologize for being an idiot, for hurting her feelings when she and the other pilot came to visit.
"What was I thinking?" Shinji said, trying to hold back the tears.
Shinji began to think about his friends, Toji, Kensuke and Hikari. How he had failed them, how hard they had tried to take him out, both to play video games and to just hang out in the city. Shinji would love to be able to talk to them at least one last time, to hear Kensuke about his fascination with EVAS and anything military related. To hear Toji complain about anything, to play basketball with him or to simply exchange recipes with Hikari, who also loved to cook.
Shinji laughed to himself as he imagined Toji being jealous of him for talking to Hikari. Of all the group, Toji had always been the only one to never realize that Hikari only had eyes for him.
Shinji recognized that he had felt good being with them. Regardless if Asuka called them the Three Stooges, he felt good. Shinji knew that what he had was as close to a family as he could get, but he had lost it by trying to get recognition from his father.
He had lost everything because of his childishness. He remembered when he had left Misato's apartment, the look of sadness on her face as he walked away without looking back.
"No wonder she thinks I'm just like my father," Shinji said as he put his arm over his eyes and began to cry softly. "I'm sorry Misato."
Shinji cried because he finally saw how weak he was, how blessed he had been to get a second family, how loved he had been; and how stupid he had been not to see that. He had thrown all that away for a person who didn't even recognize him as a son, only as a tool.
Shinji punched the bed on which he was lying, hard. He could only think of Asuka's words, he recognized that she had been right all along, he was an idiot, he was a brat and he needed to grow up.
After spending at least ten minutes crying in his bed, Shinji finally calmed down enough to be able to think again. At this point, he could hear the voice in his head once more.
"Why are you crying?" The voice asked curiously.
- Because I blew it! - Shinji thought, saddened.
"Try to fix it." The voice said.
- Now it's late. - Shinji replied.
"It's never too late." It spoke in a reassuring tone.
Shinji wondered what the voice in his head had said, how could he do anything about it? He could only think about not letting himself be manipulated again.
Shinji then stared at the ceiling. He began to think about Rei. He was starting to feel puzzled, because he had called Rei his sister. He began to debate about it.
- Is that how I feel about her? ... I like the idea of having a sister. - Shinji couldn't help but smile at the thought of Rei as his sister.
At that thought, he felt his body going rigid and his eyes widening. He imagined that she had probably already been trialed, and feared for her safety. He wished the court had had leniency on her. Shinji believed she could be useful in WILLE. After all, she didn't do things because she believed in them, she only did them because she was ordered to.
- With the right training, she could be a great help. - Shinji thought, smiling.
But all this momentary happiness would be short-lived. He knew that reality would not be good for him and for her, and now he would be alone, really alone.
Shinji's thinking was correct. Rei had already been trailed. Hers had been short, since there was nothing to judge her with. She was a clone, after all. The court believed she could be useful, so she was sentenced to stay at Wunder until she was deemed safe by her superiors and thus gain an internal role.
Rei was feeling sad inside. She didn't know how to proceed in the face of such facts, she could only think of Shinji. She felt a strange sensation in her chest, a sensation she liked. She liked being called "sister" by him. She began to understand what people called family.
Upon learning of Shinji's conviction, Rei felt her shoulders slump. She somehow wanted to help him, but she didn't know how. She thought about talking to Mari about it again, hoping she could somehow help her think about how to improve Shinji's case.
Colonel Misato Katsuragi's room - Wunder.
It had been two days since Shinji had been convicted. Misato was very upset about everything, she still couldn't believe that Shinji had been declared guilty and taken from her again. She hated the feeling that somehow she had contributed to this, every second she cursed herself for having said such words fourteen years ago. She still couldn't look herself in the mirror because of it.
She could think of nothing else but Shinji, how he had reacted to hearing her statement about him, the look of disappointment on his face, the look of abandonment, the look of someone who has lost all hope for improvement. The look of defeat on his face.
Misato was thinking about trying to get some sleep when he heard knocking at her door.
With a huff, she stood up, regretting all the while that she couldn't have some time alone. She walked to the door and, before opening it; she took a deep breath and put on a face to hide her moment of sadness regarding Shinji. After getting her emotions under control, she prepared to open the door when she heard a familiar voice on the other side: it belonged to Asuka. Misato closed her eyes and tried to understand what she was talking about.
On the other side of the door, Asuka was feeling very frustrated that she had not yet been answered. She was very angry with Misato for her words in the report read at the trial. She wanted an explanation, and started banging on the door again.
These two days had not been easy for Asuka. She had tried to hide it, but she kept falling back on the thought of Shinji being convicted. She couldn't believe that he had been declared guilty of a technically lesser crime, yet acquitted of the main event. She wanted answers and she wanted them now. Mari was by her side, trying to calm her down.
"Princess calm down, don't forget that you are talking about the colonel here," Mari spoke as she tried to hold Asuka's hands.
"I don't care, four eyes! How can she say such a thing? It doesn't matter if it was fourteen years ago! I want answers!" Asuka growled as she removed her hands from Mari's grasp.
"I know, but calm down," however, Asuka overcame her dominance and prepared to knock on the door again.
At this moment, the door opened with a soft sound and revealed Misato, who didn't bother to hide the downcast look on her face. After all, Asuka and her had lived together before the third impact. She had been her guardian and maybe friend.
Asuka felt her blood boil at the sight of Misato and spoke in a strong tone: "How could you say a thing like that, you cow!?"
Mari's eyes widened upon hearing this sentence. After all Misato was her superior officer and a person who could be cruel when she wanted to. Mari didn't want to end up like Tama, cleaning the toilets at Wunder.
Misato, hearing Asuka's accusation, could only bow her head, turn around and go back into her room. Both Asuka and Mari were shocked by the reaction. They had been expecting a response from the colonel.
"Are you guys coming in or not?" Misato's voice was heard after a few uncomfortable seconds.
Asuka promptly entered the room and was soon followed by Mari, who closed the door for privacy. She felt they would need it.
Asuka stood in front of Misato with her arms crossed over her chest and staring at her with her good eye, her eye patch revealing a blue glow.
Misato stared, but not with the intention to intimidate or anything. She didn't know what she was going to say to try to ease her guilt, she felt like she wanted to cry, but held back the emotion as best she could.
"I'm waiting!" Asuka growled.
Mari was in the corner of the room, watching everything. She knew that the two had lived together with Shinji in the past, but she still felt uncomfortable with the whole thing. She knew Misato had changed in those fourteen years, but she didn't know how she might react to being cornered like that. She realized that Misato was there not as Wunder's commander, but as Asuka's former guardian.
"I don't know," Misato spoke with a broken voice. She felt a tear run down her cheek. She knew she had messed up, she blamed herself for it, she believed she had helped in Shinji's conviction, even though she had her suspicions.
Asuka just stared at her. She still had her arms crossed over her chest, and watched Misato slowly start to collapse in front of her.
She could only shake her head and began to snort in frustration. "But still; why, Misato?"
Misato felt she couldn't take it anymore, her lip began to quiver and she put a hand over her eyes. She felt she needed to release the pressure, so she started to cry openly.
"How... I... could I... be such an idiot?" she spoke between sniffles. "How could I... do... such a thing?"
Misato was shaking while crying. Mari looked at her with pity, she had never seen the colonel that way. She began to firmly believe Sakura's words.
Asuka looked at Misato angrily, but she could see that the old Katsuragi was still alive somewhere.
She took a deep breath and spoke:
"Mari!"
The pilot of Unit-08 just stared at her.
"You said you were going to talk to your friend, didn't you?" Asuka asked in a firm tone.
Mari only nodded positively. She didn't want to talk, she didn't trust the privacy of Misato's room. If there was something going on, she wanted to be as careful as possible.
"Good," Asuka turned to Misato, who had controlled her crying, but still had her head down. "As for you, pull yourself together. We'll figure out how to fix this," Asuka spoke to Misato who just nodded.
The woman looked like a child who had lost her favorite toy. She knew that Wunder needed her; she at least knew that she had to get herself together enough to command the crew. It was going to be a hard road, but she was going to try.
"How are we going to do that?" Misato asked, despondently.
"Let's wait for Mari's friend..." Asuka spoke more calmly now.
"Ok," was Misato's response as she stood up.
Asuka sat down on the couch.
"Let's think of something... and we have to think of something fast... the brat was too broken." She said, dejectedly.
"What do you mean?" Mari asked raising an eyebrow, as she approached Misato's window.
"Didn't you see the look on his face that day here at Wunder? How he spoke? I'm scared, Mari." Asuka replied, with a look of fear on her face.
"He won't do that." Misato said, firmly.
"How do you know?" Asuka snapped. "Right now, he must be thinking he's been abandoned."
"He's not going to kill himself, Asuka!" Misato shouted as he stood up and faced the redhead.
"How do you know that!?" Asuka shouted back, standing up as well and facing Misato back. She could feel the tears in her eyes. She didn't know what she was going to do if she lost Shinji again, now that she was getting her feelings for him in order.
After a few seconds of a tense atmosphere, Asuka finally gave in and looked at the floor. She felt a tear running down her face.
Mari was watching everything. She had never seen the two strongest women she knew fighting like this, not even when they were in the worst battles, against all odds and against everything. She had never seen them like this before.
Misato stretched out her arms and wrapped Asuka in a motherly hug. The girl resisted at first but soon gave in. She needed some comfort, and at least she knew Misato was still the person she remembered.
Asuka hugged Misato back and began to cry. She no longer minded being seen crying, she only wanted Shinji back. The feeling of having him back, only to be taken away again, hit both women, and it hit hard.
Misato also started to cry, and they were silent for a while, just enjoying the hug, until Asuka spoke with fear in her voice.
"He can't do that to me, Misato!"
"He won't, Asuka. I know Shinji too well, he may be broken, but he won't do it!" Misato said, trying to sound as strong as possible to Asuka.
"I wish," was the girl's response.
- Don't do this to us Shinji! Please… - Misato thought with sadness.
New London - Somewhere in WILLE's HQ.
Sebastian was explaining his plan to his right-hand men, the 4 people he trusted the most.
"The prisoner will be transferred to Winston Churchill State Prison, 250 Kilometers from New London." Sebastian changed the slides, which showed an external picture of the prison. "His transfer will be in 2 days. Once he is transferred, we will wait a week before we act."
"So it's going to be like this... We will enter the prison and remove the prisoner BM-03. The action will be clean and fast, we can't leave anything behind," Sebastian said in a firm tone. "This operation is of utmost importance to WILLE. We cannot fail, is that clear!?"
"Yes sir!" Everyone spoke in unison.
"Does anyone wish to add anything else?" Sebastian asked.
One of the men raised his hand and waited for Sebastian's permission to speak, upon which he stood up.
"Sir, I have a suggestion," the man named as 01 said. He received a nod from Sebastian to continue.
"We can simulate the death of the subject. The psychological profile you have given us suggests a mentally and emotionally broken person. No one would suspect... And we have the necessary drugs…"
Sebastian had a thoughtful look on his face. If he could make them think the brat had died, he wouldn't have to worry about a possible search. He nodded.
"Can you do that?" Sebastian asked.
"Yes, sir. I just need to get in, drug him with the substance and, no one will suspect a thing." 01 answered, with a confident smile.
"Good." Sebastian agreed to the plan. "After the boy 'dies', his body will be taken to be processed. That way, we can remove him more easily."
"02!" Sebastian spoke up.
"Sir?" The man named as 02 answered.
"Arrange transportation! And extraction site!" Sebastian ordered.
"Yes sir" 02 with conviction.
"03 and 04! Infiltrate the prison and await orders," Sebastian instructed, pointing at the men.
"Yes, sir!" The men spoke in unison.
"Dismissed!" Sebastian said
All four men greeted their boss and discreetly left the room in which they were hiding. Little did they know that someone was watching in the shadows.
Kaji had no problem finding out the location of Sebastian's secret meeting. He was only frustrated that he couldn't get there in time to bug the room, to hear the whole conversation; but he was happy to confirm that Sebastian was up to something. He just needed to find out what.
- I will talk to Ken and Toji, to see if we can find out more about these four.
Suzuhara Apartment. - New London.
Toji had arrived home after a long day at WILLE's HQ. He was working hard to achieve the maintenance of all VTOLS that were under his responsibility; but what was bothering him was Shinji. He couldn't believe that his friend was now in a prison. Kensuke had tried to cheer him up, saying that they would be able to help Shinji, that even though he had been acquitted of the third impact, they would still be able to disclose the truth and gather evidence. Then, they would be able to at least remove him from prison and convert this sentence into "Domiciliary".
Toji was staring at the plate of food his beloved wife Hikari had prepared for him. He loved her food, but today he was not hungry, a rare event that Hikari noticed. She knew that Toji didn't eat when he was thinking about something, and she had a good idea of what it was.
"What is it, Toji?" Hikari asked with concern. "You've been staring at your food for a while."
"Nothing." Trying to sound calm, he took some food in his mouth; but Hikari could tell he was lying.
"Don't lie to me, Suzuhara. I know how much something is bothering you," Hikari spoke. She could still use her old authority as a class representative.
Toji just stared at her with a small smile on his face. He loved it when she tried to be mean to him, but disliked it when she pulled his ear. Seeing that he couldn't get away from his wife, he spoke as he looked down dejectedly.
"I can't stop thinking about Shinji... Just knowing that he's paying for something that wasn't his fault... They set him up Hikari." Toji could feel his anger growing. He had always been very loyal to those he loved, he always felt obligated to protect his friends. He had always thought of himself as a protector, he would even protect Asuka if she needed it; and knowing that one of his best friends was in jail for something he didn't deserve, it was killing his mood.
Hikari just stared at her husband. She knew that Toji cared a lot about Shinji. She too always believed in his total innocence.
"Did Kensuke get anything?" she asked, curious.
Toji at this point put his hand in his pocket and activated a device Kaji had given him. He was going to cause interference so that the room would become safe.
"He's making a program to be able to access the servers, but he hasn't gotten it done yet. We only have three more days to the perfect time to get something done." Toji said as he put his hands on his head and dragged them through his hair in annoyance.
"He'll get it. Remember when he used to hack into the school system to erase your absences? You don't know how angry that made me." Hikari spoke up, trying to lighten the mood at the table.
Toji only laughed at the memory. He raised his head so he could look at Hikari's face with a small smile on his. He still couldn't believe that he had managed to marry her. He still felt that he didn't deserve a woman like her.
Hikari saw Toji's gaze and looked away while blushing slightly.
"I know he will... Kaji will get something, too." Toji spoke as he held Hikari's hand. "Now, let's eat before it gets cold."
Hikari smiled at her husband, but she also thought of Shinji. - Kensuke, please succeed. - She prayed, feeling anxious.
The Suzuhara family went back to enjoying their dinner in silence, but a few blocks away, a bespectacled man was frantically typing on his computer, trying desperately to create a code that would give him a 5-minute breach of WILLE's security system.
"Come on! Work, you piece of shit!" Kensuke grumbled in annoyance at not getting the result he wanted. He threw the TV control away as he saw the system announce that there was a failure.
Kensuke sighed to calm himself and began to reread the lines to find where he had failed.
"Come on Ken... You can do it... You still have three days left... Just think" Kensuke spoke to himself as he slid his hands over his face and went to the kitchen for a drink.
After a few seconds off, the man with glasses sat back down at the table to get back to work. He couldn't waste any time. He had to help his friend.
Wunder
Asuka was having a hard time concentrating on the synchronization tests. It had been about two days since they had anchored in the city for repairs, and even though the ship was parked, she was doing her duties as a pilot. She knew that today would be the day of Shinji's transfer to the prison, and she was feeling helpless for not having thought of anything to help him.
Asuka had considered using the EVA to fetch Shinji. She would break the walls of his cell and escape with him in her EVA's hand, but she discarded that idea. Besides being absurd, she also didn't have an EVA to use.
Their unit 2 was still undergoing repairs. It would take approximately 3 months for it to become operational again. Ritsuko had advised that they would use the original core of unit two, so they could speed up the process of having another EVA unit available.
Asuka was feeling very frustrated that she couldn't pilot an EVA. She was an Elite pilot; she couldn't sit on the bench while the four-eyed won all the glory.
"Focus, Asuka... your timing is varying too much," Maya's voice was heard in the plug.
"I'm focused," the girl growled.
Mari was in her plug next to Asuka's. She was thinking about Shinji, and laughed when Asuka told her about her plan to get him out of prison using the EVA.
- Don't worry Princess. Your Puppy will be with us before you say Auf Wiedersehen. - Mari thought, confident in her accent. She knew that Kaji was looking for information to be able to help Shinji. It was only a matter of time.
In the control wing next door, Maya was sitting watching her monitor, together with Ritsuko. They enjoyed each other's company. It was good to do simple activities.
"Maya, you have to use more authority in your voice. You have to show who's boss." Ritsuko spoke as she leaned over so she could look at monitor.
"I know, Sensei; but I still can't use my voice the right way." Maya said as she lowered her gaze.
"Don't worry, you're doing fine." Ritsuko turned to look at Maya's flushed face.
The young woman still felt like a schoolgirl when being praised by her Sensei.
"Okay... Asuka is having trouble maintaining a steady rate. She's been like this since the trial." Maya pointed out.
"I believe Shinji has affected her in some way. She has to improve or we will have to find another pilot." Ritsuko spoke as she squeezed the space between her eyes.
Maya lowered her gaze. She knew that piloting was Asuka's life, and she also knew that it was almost impossible to find another pilot. WILLE would not be a hypocrite to train new pilots when its mission is to take down NERV and the EVAS.
Maya started thinking about the old days. She hadn't thought much about Shinji yet, but she suspected something, and was going to ask her old bridge colleagues if they could help in any way to clear up this mystery in her head.
Kensuke's Apartment - New London.
Two days had passed, and Kensuke wanted to cry in frustration at not having been able to build a program to provide the necessary breach. He was almost giving up when he received a message with a file attached.
Kensuke looked at the message with suspicion. He was reading the content, and shivered as he did so. His heart raced and he began to hyperventilate.
Hey Nerd... it seems that you have not yet broken the code of WILLE. A friend of mine warned me that you could of some help; do not make me regret it.
XOXO
Kensuke was paralyzed in front of his computer. He was afraid to open the attached text file; but he realized that someone knew he was trying to create a breach, so he opened it.
The file consisted of a set of codes. It was about 500 lines long, and when Kensuke realized what they were, he laughed and cried with joy. Those codes would give him access to WILLE's Magis, he could create the breach he so desperately needed.
"Thank you, whoever you are." Kensuke spoke as he began working on the program with the lines he had received. After a few hours, he got the green light he had been looking for so hard.
Winston Churchill Prison
Shinji was sitting in his cell in prison. He had been there for a day. It was not much different from the Wunder's cell. At least he was alone there.
At the sound of a mechanical lock being activated, the door opened for lunch hour.
Shinji felt bad for being there. After all, with the curse of EVA he still had the physique of a 14 year old boy. The looks that the other prisoners gave him were of distrust and confusion; but because of his physical type they left him alone. They didn't see him as a threat to their authority within the prison.
Shinji realized that he had to improve his physique, for he would no longer shirk responsibility. He would no longer disappoint others. He was convicted, after all. He would serve his time, even if there was no one else; but he had to do that to prove to himself that he would no longer make the same mistakes.
WILLE's HQ.
Kaji was inside WILLE in a stolen technical maintenance uniform. Everyone was focused on their proper jobs to notice him, and he walked with his head down to avoid the security cameras.
Passing through the security check, he approached the meeting point to find out when his breach would start. He stood in front of WILLE's server door.
Kaji stopped and bent down to tie his shoe, in order to stall for time.
At the same time, Kensuke was in his office, doing security maintenance on WILLE's system. No one realized that he was installing the breach program that would create a loop from the security cameras, shut down the physical barriers on the servers, not detect Kaji copying the files he was looking for and, in the end, leave no trace behind. The code he had received was a gold mine.
Kensuke saw that Kaji was already in position. He checked on other cameras that Toji was also ready. He had left a VTOL ready to take off in case Kaji needed it. Toji had also removed the transponder so as not to be detected if, or when, Kaji escaped.
Kensuke was nervous, but managed to hide it well. He looked at his watch and waited for the appointed time. When noon struck, he pressed the enter key and the program started working.
Kaji realized that the time had come. He looked at the door for a few seconds, then a whistle sounded and it simply opened. Kaji let out a smile and moved forward, he knew he only had about 10 minutes to act.
He quickly went into the servers and pulled up a device that would go in and copy the files.
"Let's go," Kaji spoke as he began to search for the desired files.
He found them, but they were heavily protected, so Kaji activated the program that Kensuke had given. After about 30 seconds he saw that the files were being copied. Kaji let out a sigh of relief that everything was going according to plan.
At this moment he realized that another person had entered the servers. He could hear footsteps approaching. Kaji quickly took cover and drew his weapon in case it was needed.
Kaji was wondering if he had failed, if he had been discovered; but he realized that it was only a computer technician bringing some materials into the room. Realizing that she would not notice his presence, he returned to his seat and began typing as quietly as possible. He appreciated that the servers were making some noise, along with the air conditioning in the sector.
After about six minutes, Kaji realized that he was running out of time. He had already copied too many files, it would take him some time to break the encryption and analyze everything; but he already had a place to start.
Kaji put away the equipment Kensuke had given him. He started devising a strategy to get out unseen by the technician working at the console near the door. He had to think of something and fast.
He remembered the movie scenes he had watched and, thinking it might work, got a tool and threw it across the room. The sound of metal hitting metal caught the attention of the technician, who got up to look at the source of the noise.
Kaji, having the moment he needed, promptly ran to the door and out. He started walking as normally as he could. He looked at his watch and saw that he had about two minutes to spare. He continued his way toward the exit.
Kensuke saw that no alarms had sounded. At the end of the program he noted that everything had gone as planned, and he let out a sigh of relief as he went back to work on the system upgrade.
The same was true for Toji. Not noticing any gunshots or strange movements, he also let out a relieved sigh and went back to the VTOL he was working on.
Kaji got into the car he had parked in for his getaway. He wanted to get out of the vicinity so he could analyze the data he got.
- This is going to be a long night. - he thought as he drove.
About 20 days had passed since Shinji's arrest. Kaji had already managed to break some of the data encryption, but he still had a lot of work to do.
At the same time, Sebastian was sitting at his desk, waiting for the perfect moment to put his plan to capture Shinji into practice.
He saw that some time had passed and that he could start his plan, so he picked up the radio and began talking.
"Puppies, this is eagle. Status?" Sebastian asked. He was feeling anxious, but he couldn't show it. He would have to look surprised when it was all over.
"01" Okay.
"04" Okay.
"02" Okay.
"03" Okay.
"Green light." Was the final order from Sebastian, who cracked a small smile on his face. "Initiate radio silence."
Sebastian put the radio away and started working on his papers from his desk. In a few hours he would receive confirmation that Shinji Ikari would be his.
Winston Churchill Prison
Shinji was lying in his cell. In that almost one month he had experienced ups and downs; but he knew he couldn't fail.
He decided to take a walk in his section. He could go to the library and get some books to pass the time. He was still very underweight, but he felt he was getting better.
After arriving at the library, he started looking for something he was interested in, perhaps for a book on cooking. Shinji was thinking about volunteering in the kitchen. He could at least do something he considered himself good at.
"Are you Shinji Ikari?" A tall man dressed as a guard asked. He already knew it was Shinji, but it had to appear to be someone who only knew him from the newspapers.
Shinji turned to look at the man. He was tall and strong, blond, and could easily pass himself off as Russian by his appearance. Shinji didn't suspect this, however, for they were in a prison. He just nodded.
"Good." The man cracked a smile on his face. He looked around to see if they were alone. Shinji began to feel anxious about that, thinking that confirming his identity might've been a mistake.
The man whispered to his ear: "I think it's a hell of a fuck up what they did to you."
Shinji felt awkward about it, but very naively, he spoke up. "Thanks, but I have to take responsibility. I can't run away."
The man nodded and extended his hand to Shinji. "Very noble of you. It is an honor to meet you."
Shinji looked at the man's hand. He shook it back, not realizing that there was an almost colorless plastic sticker glued on the man's hand.
The man smiled as he saw that Shinji had fallen for his trick.
"I'm sure the truth will come out." He spoke as he turned and began to leave the room, with a smile on his face.
Shinji hadn't realized what had happened. He was feeling confused by the whole thing, but he looked again at the collection of cookbooks in front of him. He didn't realize the evil that was waiting for him.
As the day went on, Shinji returned to his cell. Everyone was getting ready for the beginning of the night. He began to feel strange. Weak, in fact. Weaker than usual.
Shinji started to break into a cold sweat. He didn't know what was happening. He tried to get up to splash some water on his face; but he just fell to the ground. He couldn't move. The last thing Shinji saw was the wall.
The man designated as 03 was walking nearby, knowing that the drug should have already taken effect. Reaching Shinji's cell, he peeked inside to find him lying on the floor. He smiled and picked up the prison radio.
"Attempted Suicide in cell 92, I repeat... Attempted Suicide in cell 92." He waited for the door to open to begin his pretense looking at Shinji. He tried to feel Shinji's pulse, but there seemed to be none.
- The drug worked perfectly. - The man thought, smiling, as he prepared a noose with the cloth he pulled from inside his shirt. He didn't have much time.
He was standing over Shinji as if performing CPR when the medical team arrived, in just a couple of minutes.
They did what they were trained to do, but they felt it was too late to do anything. The doctors declared him dead on the floor of his cell.
Everyone on Sebastian's team knew that part of the plan had worked. Now, part B would begin.
As Shinji's "body" was removed and taken to the morgue in the infirmary, the men numbered 02 and number 01 were already in position to take the "corpse" out. They had stolen an ambulance for the act. Nobody suspected anything. After all, that was the protocol.
After a few minutes, Sebastian's men carried Shinji to the ambulance. They were going to take the body to be cremated at a WILLE's service, one for people without family.
After a few hours of driving, the man named 01 picked up the radio and spoke in a military tone.
"Breaking radio silence. We have the package."
"Great... Take him to the site." Sebastian's voice was heard by the men.
"Yes Sir." The man spoke before throwing the radio out the ambulance window.
Somewhere in New England.
Shinji began to wake up. He was feeling very sore, his head seemed to have been turned off.
He realized that he was lying on a table with his arms and legs bound. He started to wonder what was happening. He could feel the fear beginning to take over.
"You finally woke up." A voice spoke in the background.
Shinji looked around, frantically, for the voice.
"Who are you?" was the only thing he could say.
At this moment, Sebastian stepped out of the shadows. He didn't care that Shinji knew who he was, he was dead after all.
"You." Shinji remembered seeing that person when he had been delivered to the UN.
"Commander Sebastian Brown," the man spoke as he introduced himself, "and we are going to have a lot of fun now. You are going to give me the information I want."
Shinji could only widen his eyes. He knew that things would not end well for him, but he made a promise to himself. He would no longer be manipulated, even if it caused him a lot of pain.
