Chapter 08 - Motivation part 02
Shinji could only stare at Sebastian, feeling the fear starting to dominate him. He didn't know what to do; he just stared at the man in front of him.
"What do you want?" Shinji repeated his question, hoping to get the man to give him a definitive answer.
Sebastian simply laughed. This was not the first time he had done that kind of interrogation.
"I want to know everything, kid. Your time at NERV, what you did there, what you saw there..." Sebastian was speaking in a calm and nonchalant manner. "And most important of all, how do you awaken an EVA."
Shinji's eyes widened. He didn't know how he had unleashed the true power of Unit-01, and even if he knew how, he wouldn't tell because he had made a promise to himself. He would not be manipulated again to cause more destruction.
"I don't know how to do it," was his response.
Sebastian was already expecting that answer. He knew that Shinji was somehow lying or playing tough guy. He didn't care. Most people, after two days of 'talking,' always gave him the information he wanted. Sebastian sighed and started walking towards a table that had a small device on it. He picked it up and turned back to face Shinji.
"Do you know what this is, kid?" Sebastian spoke up, looking at Shinji with a threatening glare.
Shinji just stared at the tool in the man's hand. It was simple, just a small plastic object and a button. He was scared. He knew he would feel pain, but he didn't know how much. He shook his head, quickly.
Sebastian flashed Shinji a smile, he could see the fear on the kid's face.
"This, boy, is an activator. You're lying on a metal table, and underneath it is a small electrical box." Sebastian spoke in a sadistic, threatening tone. "If I push this button, that box will turn on, and you're not going to like it."
Shinji's breathing got faster. Be began to remember Asuka's words in the first days on the red earth, he couldn't believe that they would do this to him.
"I don't know how I did that," he spoke, stuttering, to Sebastian, who was standing a few inches away from him, holding the control in his hand.
Sebastian pulled his face away and let out a tired sigh. "What a shame... I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation."
Shinji felt the adrenaline rush through his body.
CLICK
Shinji could feel the electricity coursing through his body, and yet he couldn't scream, he could only stare at the ceiling as his body convulsed.
It was over after a few seconds, but for Shinji, it seemed like an eternity.
CLICK
When the power was cut, the kid could see the smile on Sebastian's face. His body was still tingling, and he felt a little dizzy.
- That hurt... Don't run away Shinji! - He thought with determination.
"So, kid; you saw that I am serious. I don't care if you look like a fourteen year old boy." Sebastian was speaking in an extremely calm tone. This helped to scare Shinji even more.
CLICK
Sebastian again turned the power on. He was enjoying watching the boy struggling on the table, victim of the electricity. This time, Sebastian left the power on longer.
As he felt his body being punished by the electrical current, Shinji could only stare at the ceiling, waiting for the torture to pass. He couldn't even scream, only moan.
CLICK
Shinji was breathing fast when it finished. He was thinking about many things, but the main one was that he didn't know how to awaken an EVA.
"Sir... I... I... Really don't... know," he spoke between heavy breaths.
Sebastian could feel his patience beginning to leave his body. He moved closer so he could look into Shinji's eyes and spoke more strongly this time.
"You expect me to believe that? You awaken two EVAS and you expect me to believe that you don't know how?"
Shinji could feel Sebastian's gaze on him, he was looking at everything but his face.
"I really don't know, it just happened." Shinji replied as he turned his gaze back to him.
Sebastian huffed in frustration, turned away and lifted the control again.
CLICK
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!" Shinji cried out as he felt the agony caused by the electricity.
Sebastian was standing back, looking at him with a strong expression on his face.
CLICK
A silence reigned in the room. Sebastian stared at his prisoner lying on the table. He wanted the information, and he wouldn't wait any longer.
CLICK
Again Shinji cried out, tears starting to form in his eyes.
CLICK
"Just tell me what I want and it will be over." Sebastian spoke sadistically. "Because if that doesn't work, I'll switch tactics, kid."
Sebastian had a sadistic smile on his face as he spoke the last part. Shinji was looking up at the ceiling again.
The man, annoyed by his prisoner's lack of response, approached and punched him hard in the face. Shinji's head turned violently to the right with that blow. A strong red mark could be seen on his cheek and blood was starting to drip from his nose and lips.
Shinji felt the hit. He could only dwell on the pain of the attack. Toji's punch had not even come close to the pain this one had caused him.
He turned his head again to Sebastian and spoke weakly.
"I don't know."
Sebastian huffed in frustration as he threw another punch at Shinji.
Shinji felt dizzy from the blow. He could only think of the people he loved.
"How did you do to awaken the EVA?" Sebastian asked again.
BLOW
"How?" Sebastian asked again.
Shinji replied faintly. "I don't know." He could feel the tears running down his cheek.
Sebastian snorted at the answer and walked away.
CLICK
The energy flowed through the table once more, passing through Shinji's body, causing every muscle to contract, and causing a pain that the kid could have never imagined.
Not even in the battles against the angels had he felt similar pains. He could only close his eyes and wait for it to stop. He began to think about the times when he had been happy, about when Misato had taken him to his home, when he had met Toji and Kensuke, when he had met Rei and when he had met Asuka.
CLICK
After a few hours of 'talking' with Shinji, Sebastian was frustrated. He got up, went to the metal door and pounded on it. It promptly opened, revealing one of his men.
Shinji at this point had a swollen face and pain all over his body from the shocks and punches he had taken. He didn't know how he was still able to stay awake.
"Take him to the cell." Sebastian ordered as he walked by the guard, who nodded.
Shinji could hear footsteps approaching him. He knew he would be taken somewhere else. He was hoping it would be to a hospital, but he knew that it wouldn't be the case. He was thinking he would never leave that place alive.
The man began to untie Shinji's legs and arms. The boy showed no resistance, and when the guard finished, he promptly grabbed him by the arm and pulled him off the table.
Shinji felt like he was going to fall. His body was numb and sore from the shocks. When he tried to stand, he fell and held on to the guard. His legs were too weak.
"Get off me brat!" The man growled as he pushed Shinji, who fell to the ground. The kid turned, trying to get up; but he had no strength.
The man snorted at the image in front of him and went to the door, calling for a companion. When they returned, they grabbed Shinji by the shoulders and led him to his cell.
Shinji felt his feet being dragged along the ground. He could only look forward with his less swollen eye.
Upon reaching the cell, one of the men opened it, and the other threw Shinji inside.
Shinji only felt the impact on the floor when he heard the door closing and being locked. He lay there for some time, with no strength to move.
After a few hours of lying down, he thought about trying again. As he moved his arms to get up, he realized that his whole body ached with that mere action. After a few attempts, he managed to crawl onto a small futon and lay down once more, looking at the ceiling.
"Again an unknown ceiling." He spoke to no one as he felt tears streaming down his swollen face.
Wunder
Misato was in her office, thinking that it had been approximately 20 days since Shinji had been transferred to prison.
She was looking at repair reports. They had been flying for two days, heading towards North America. Misato was trying to concentrate on the reports, thinking about any way she could help Shinji.
Misato huffed in frustration as she threw the stack of papers off her desk. In annoyance, she put her hands over her head and let out a long, tired sigh.
"How can I help you, Shinji?" Misato spoke to no one.
Misato had never felt so helpless in her whole life. She lay awake for hours at night thinking about the words she had said about Shinji. How abandoned he must feel in his cell. How much she had failed as his guardian.
Misato started thinking about the day Shinji left her apartment. She should have done more back then. She shouldn't have let him leave so easily. She was thinking that she should have stopped him somehow, even locking him in his room if necessary.
- What would it be like if things were different? What would it be like if he were by our side at all times? - Misato thought in annoyance.
At this moment there was a knock at her door. She promptly pulled herself together and spoke as she observed the state of her room.
"Come in."
Tama opened the door and was faced with paper sheets strewn across the floor of Misato's office. He kept the thought to himself and raised his head to look at Misato. He had learned his lesson.
"Ma'am, Commander Sebastian is on line 03." He spoke, as neutrally as possible.
Misato snorted in annoyance. "What does he want now?
"I don't know ma'am." Tama replied, categorically.
"I'll take it from here. Thank you, Lieutenant." Misato replied as she straightened up in her chair.
Tama nodded as he turned and left Misato's office.
"Shit." Misato mumbed as she activated the Video Feed with Sebastian.
The man had a tired look on his face, something Misato noticed, but she would never imagine that he had spent the night torturing Shinji.
"Colonel Katsuragi." Sebastian spoke up, greeting the woman.
"Commander," she replied as politely as possible. "What can I do for you?"
Sebastian could feel the venom in Misato's voice, but he didn't care. Seeing her reaction to the news he was bringing would be worth it.
"I know that you had a fondness for Shinji, so I thought you deserved to know." Sebastian spoke, trying to keep a false sense of comfort in his voice.
Misato could only frown and stare at him. She began to feel her heart soar at the way Sebastian was speaking.
"Since there is no easy way to say it, I will just tell you: Shinji is dead." Sebastian spoke in a calm tone and with an expression of false empathy.
Misato felt her body freeze in place. All her strength seemed to have been removed from her body. She could only stare at Sebastian.
"He killed himself yesterday in his cell in Winston Churchill prison." He was looking at Misato's face, he could see the shock in her eyes, and he flashed a small smile at that. Incidentally, he didn't like Misato and loved seeing her suffering.
"I thought you would like to know. WILLE out." With that, Sebastian's feed went off. Misato didn't react, she was in shock at the information. She looked at her hands and saw that they were shaking. She felt tears streaming down her face.
Outside the office, everyone was wondering what the commander wanted to talk to the colonel about. Some were thinking it would be routine information, others about some mission they would be sent on.
Ritsuko was looking at her screen, checking up the status of the whole ship. She didn't notice that the core of unit one was starting to release more energy. Before she guided her attention to unit 01, she noticed Misato's door opening and the colonel emerging, with her face in shock and tears running down her cheeks.
"Take over, Ritsuko... I'm withdrawing." Misato said, very downcast.
"Did something happen, Misato?" Ritsuko asked, concerned for her friend.
At this moment, everyone on the bridge was looking at Misato as she walked slowly toward the exit.
"Misato?" Ritsuko called out again, but it seemed that her friend was in another world. She simply withdrew from the bridge.
Everyone there looked at each other with confused looks on their faces. They had never seen their commander like this before. Hyuga and Shigeru exchanged looks. They could guess who the subject of this call was and, from Misato's reaction, they imagined it to be nothing good.
Misato was walking through the halls, thinking about Sebastian's words. She couldn't get that particular phrase out of her head.
"Shinji is dead... He killed himself."
She was doing everything possible to keep her emotions under control. She sniffled and felt tears running down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them away and started walking faster.
In the background, Mari was walking in the area of the lodgings. She was going to eat something when she noticed Misato passing by in the next hallway. She saw that something was not right with her posture, nor with her fast pace.
- Was she crying? - Mari thought as she looked at Misato disappearing into her room. - I wonder what happened… -
Mari just stared at Misato's door with a thoughtful look on her face. She could sense that something was not right and it was already making her afraid, for Mari knew that only two people could cause this kind of reaction in Misato. One was there at Wunder, safe and sound. The other was in prison.
Mari felt a shiver running down her back. She had a bad feeling about the whole situation and turned to go back to her room, her hunger lost.
Mari and Asuka's room.
Asuka was in her room, depressed about the whole thing regarding Shinji. She was thinking, looking at the ceiling, when she noticed the door opening and Mari coming through.
"Are you back already?" Asuka asked, despondently.
"I lost my hunger," Mari said, trying to maintain her composure.
Asuka noticed that Mari was different, so she turned around and asked again:
"What?"
"Nothing." Mari shrugged as she sat down, looking at the turned off TV.
Asuka could see that there was something bothering her roommate; but she was too depressed, so she didn't ask.
Misato's room
Misato, realizing that she was in the privacy of her room, allowed herself to cry openly. She promptly fell to the floor and began sobbing loudly.
"How could you, Shinji?" Misato said as she cried on the floor.
After a few minutes, she got up, walked to the communicator and typed in the code for Mari and Asuka's room.
Misato took a deep breath and waited.
"Mari speaking." The girl's voice was heard.
"Is Asuka with you?" Misato asked, not bothering to hide the dejection in her voice.
"Yes." Mari replied.
"Good... Come to my room." And Misato hung up the communicator.
Mari and Asuka's room.
"Good... Come to my room." Misato ordered in a downcast voice.
Mari and Asuka looked at each other, confused by the order. That only underscored Mari's distrust. She felt her breathing become rapid and her body beginning to tremble.
Asuka was confused as she got out of her bed. She saw the look on Mari's face and started to get scared about the whole thing; but she kept her feelings under control.
The walk to Misato's room was short. They said nothing on the way, for each was in her own private world, wondering what the colonel wanted. Mari was lost, praying for her suspicionto be wrong.
Asuka was trying to keep calm. She had a bad feeling about the whole thing.
When the girls arrived in Misato's room they were afraid to knock. Mari raised her hand and did so.
The door opened and they were shocked by the sight. Misato was a mess. Her eyes were red, and her hair unkempt.
"Come in," she spoke, above a whisper.
Mari and Asuka entered and waited for Misato, who closed the door and sat down on the sofa.
An uneasy silence hung over the room, the only sound was Misato's sniffling. It was obvious that she had been crying.
"What happened?" Asuka asked apprehensively.
Misato lifted her face and looked at her. Asuka was afraid of the answer, and her former guardian didn't have enough courage to speak.
"Spit it, Misato!" Asuka was already losing patience with the whole thing. Adrenaline was coursing through her body.
Misato began to cry, despite how desperately she tried not to, and spoke between sniffles.
"S... S... Shinji... Shinji is dead." She said as she collapsed back into tears, with her hands on her face.
The girls were in shock. Mari felt her legs going limp and sat up against the wall. She couldn't believe it. Asuka was petrified in place, shaking visibly.
"No... No!" Asuka said as she felt tears on her face and shook her head.
Mari was trying to control her own tears and spoke in a broken voice. "How?"
Misato calmed herself a little and explained it: "He killed himself in his cell... He hung himself."
Asuka, upon hearing this, had flashes of memory as she remembered finding her mother hanging from the ceiling of the hospital room. She thought, frantically, that history was repeating itself.
"No!" Asuka screamed as she put her hands on her head and started sobbing loudly. "He can't have done that!"
Misato stood up and tried to calm her down. She promptly hugged Asuka, who resisted at first.
Asuka was struggling in Misato's arms. She couldn't believe that Shinji had done that to her. How could he abandon her again?
As she lost her energy, Asuka relented and began hugging Misato back. The two women were weeping openly in each other's arms.
Mari was still sitting against the wall. She felt a tear slide down her face. She too could not believe that Shinji had died.
Outside the room, Ritsuko heard all the commotion. She couldn't help but feel tightness in her chest at what she had heard.
She knew she had a share of blame in Shinji Ikari's case. She could have given her statement on Shinji's behalf, claiming that the pilots did not know the nature of EVAS. She knew what those machines were capable of.
She decided to go back to the bridge, already knowing that she could not help in that situation. She could only wish that her friend could overcome it, somehow.
Somewhere in New London.
Kaji was typing away on his computer, deciphering the security code of the files he had managed to steal. He was having difficulty because they were heavily protected. This task would prove to be very time consuming.
Kaji was going out for some fresh air when he noticed his cell phone vibrating. He picked up the device, looked at the identifier, saw that it was marked as unknown and promptly answered.
On the other end of the line, a female voice spoke. He knew who it was, but he would avoid talking as much as possible. That number was only for important information and they didn't want to be identified.
His eyes widened at what was said. Kaji felt his body going rigid. He squeezed the cell phone until his joints went white. His free hand closed into a fist. He could feel the pain of his nails digging into his skin, but the pain he felt in his hand was no match for the one in his soul.
When the call ended he felt that he was losing his cool, something he hadn't felt in a long time. It was the same one he had felt while seeing his younger brother being murdered, in the times of the second impact.
Kaji again had the feeling that he had failed, that he had failed Shinji. He had not gotten the information in time. He threw the cell phone at the wall, shattering the device into several pieces.
He was beginning to feel nauseous. He ran to the bathroom and emptied the contents of his stomach into the toilet. As he pulled himself together, he didn't want to imagine the suffering that Misato would go through when she heard the news. He quickly opened the drawer and took out a picture. There were three people there: Shinji on the left, Asuka on the right and Misato in the middle of the two. Kaji smiled when he saw it.
"Misato must be broken…" Kaji said, despondently.
"It won't stay that way, Shinji," he spoke to the photo in a tone of determination as he put it in his shirt pocket.
Kaji promptly returned to the computer. He typed heavily, determined to find out the whole truth. Shinji might be dead, but he would be avenged one way or another.
- I swear, Sebastian; if you have anything to do with this, I will kill you! - Kaji thought in annoyance as he typed on his computer.
Suzuhara Apartment.
Toji was sitting, watching a basketball game on television. Hikari was sitting next to him, not particularly interested in the game. She was reading her book.
Toji got up from the couch and walked to the kitchen to get something to drink.
"Baby, do you want anything?" he shouted from the kitchen.
"Can you get me some tea?" Hikari shouted back.
"Sure, that's what God gave me two hands for." Toji spoke as he gestured to his wife, who only stared at her husband with a smile on her face.
Toji was filling a cup for Hikari and, just as he was ready to leave with a soda in one hand and a cup of tea in the other; the phone rang. He cursed softly and put the can of soda on the counter. Seeing that it was his friend Kensuke, he promptly answered it.
"Speak, Ken." Toji said, but he heard a sniffle on the other end of the line.
"Hello Toji." Kensuke spoke in a broken, depressed voice.
Toji began to worry about this. Kensuke was not a guy who cried over anything. If he was crying, it was because something serious had happened.
"Kensuke? What happened?" Toji asked with concern.
Hikari noticed the change in her husband's tone, stood up and walked towards Toji, with a worried look on her face.
"Man... Shinji killed himself." Kensuke said, his voice failing.
Toji at this moment was paralyzed. He felt the tea cup slipping from his hand and falling to the ground at his feet; but he didn't care about that. He was entirely focused on was the information he had just heard.
Hiraki was beginning to worry. She had never seen Toji so shocked before.
"What happened, Toji? "
"Kensuke... Don't mess around with this!" Toji said, feeling his anger growing inside him. He completely ignored his wife, not because he wanted to; but his mind was focused on something else.
"I'm not kidding... I found out today... I'm hanging up, friend." With that, Kensuke hung up.
Toji continued to stare at the phone with a shocked look on his face. He began to squeeze the device with his hand.
"Toji, what happened?" Hikari repeated her question, placing her hand on her husband's shoulder.
The act seemed to snap Toji out of his trance and he looked tearfully at Hikari. He spoke as slowly as he could. He still couldn't believe it.
"Shinji... Shinji is dead."
Hikari let out a muffled scream and put her hands over her mouth, promptly beginning to cry.
Toji saw this and hugged his wife. She was crying openly in his chest. Toji felt his anger growing inside him, now he was more than determined to help Kaji reveal the truth. He had to do it. He had to do it for Shinji.
Misato's Room - Wunder
Misato was sitting at a table in her room, looking at a photo that she always carried. In that photo were four people: she between Shinji and Asuka, and Pen-pen in Shinji's arms.
She still couldn't believe the news she had received. She was wishing she could have a beer now.
Mari was with Asuka on the sofa, the latter sleeping, using the former's leg as a pillow. Mari was rubbing Asuka's head, still recovering from the news. She was imagining the suffering that those two women were going through. If she was taking it badly, how much harsher it would be for the woman who thought of herself as his mother, and the other, perhaps his future girlfriend?
Mari was shaking her head. She couldn't believe it. The years she had spent with Kaji had made her doubt of any news she found suspicious. Shinji might be dead, but he didn't kill himself. Those were Mari's thoughts.
Misato was looking at the photo, wishing that the day was a nightmare, wishing that Shinji's death was a nightmare she would wake up from with knocks on the door of her office. Of course, those knocks never came.
She was getting ready for bed. She didn't mind the presence of Mari and Asuka in her room, she just needed alcohol; but she had been sober for at least 10 years. Since she couldn't drink to drown her sorrows she decided to sleep instead.
"I'm going to bed, Mari. You can stay if you want." Misato said, depressingly.
Mari raised her face to reply, but was stopped when the lights went out and the emergency lights turned on.
Mari and Misato looked at each other in confusion. There was no way the ship could have lost power, since it came from the S2 engine of unit 01.
"What the fuck is happening?" Misato started to speak, but was stopped by a strong jolt, which also woke Asuka up. She looked around and saw that Mari was holding her so she wouldn't fall to the ground.
"What the fuck is going on?!" Asuka shouted as she stood up.
"Are we being attacked?!" Mari wondered.
"No, that's not an attack." When another strong jolt shook Wunder, everyone in the room realized that they were going down, and fast.
Misato grabbed his red jacket and ran to the door, which opened easily with a push. The whole ship seemed out of power.
She ran towards the bridge, holding steady as much as she could with the swing of the ship. When he reached the bridge, she was accompanied by Mari and Asuka. The place was a mess, alarms were blaring and some of the electricity was out.
"Report!" Misato demanded as he approached Ritsuko, who was talking to Maya in engineering.
"It's unit one!" Ritsuko shouted without turning around.
"What do you mean?!" Misato shouted back.
"I don't know! Maya said she's struggling." Ritsuko explained as she turned to the communicator.
Misato looked around and braced herself with another jolting wave. She was finding it strange that unit one was agitated at the same moment she heard about Shinji, but she would think about that later.
"Level the ship!" Misato ordered.
"I'm trying, but the controls are heavy! We don't have enough power!" Koji shouted from his post, struggling with the controls.
Misato was looking around frantically. Everyone was typing on their keyboards, trying to figure out what was going on. She turned around and ordered:
"Hyuga, transfer all power to the stabilizers!"
"I already did, ma'am! It doesn't have the desired effect!" Hyuga shouted back.
"Shit." Misato spoke as she braced herself in the face of another wave of shaking.
The Wunder was flying with difficulty and losing altitude rapidly. The ships she was carrying were swayed with violence as the AT field failed. It was only a matter of time before it disappeared and those ships plummeted from the sky.
Misato looked out of the window and saw that the field was crumbling. Her eyes widened as a war frigate broke in half due to the instability of the AT field.
"Put it down! Land now!" Misato shouted as she saw that everyone was in danger.
Koji knew what Misato was up to. He quickly pushed the handle of the huge Wunder forward to start a rapid descent. They had to be in the water, for, the Wunder could only fly with the help of the AT field.
"Raaaaaaaaaaaw!"
Everyone stopped to listen to the bellow. It sounded like an animal's roar. All felt their blood run cold with that deafening growl.
Ritsuko knew that Unit one was breaking free of the restraints. It was the only explanation for those noises.
"What the fuck is that, Ritsuko?!" Misato shouted, plugging her ears.
When the roar stopped, Ritsuko responded in near panic: "It's unit one!"
And just like had started, everything stopped. All the instruments went silent; the only thing left was the external display showing the approaching water.
Everyone could see when the field turned off and everything that was being supported by it fell into the sea, including an entire fleet of warships carrying thousands of soldiers and equipment.
A morbid silence fell over the room as the Wunder glided towards the sea. Misato could only look at Asuka and Mari, who were paralyzed, holding onto something.
"Brace for impact!" Misato shouted as he saw that the ship was going to have a hard landing in the water.
Koji did as much as he could. He straightened the Wunder so that it touched the surface as gently as possible, but with the lack of power, maneuvering was almost impossible.
The mighty Wunder slammed its belly into the red water of the Atlantic Ocean. Its wings shook violently as it bounced on the water, and everyone could only pray that the great ship would not break apart and sink with the violence of the impact.
The Wunder dragged itself through the water until it came to a complete stop. The whole ship was a mess, and they probably had many wounded.
The bridge was intact, by some miracle. The front glass had withstood the impact, but almost everyone had been thrown from their seats. Misato had a cut on her face from colliding with a chair, while Asuka and Mari seemed fine.
She promptly stood up and began to look into the darkness around her.
"Report!" She shouted.
A flashlight was seen, followed by others. They were helping one another. Misato and Ritsuko could see that everyone was fine; they were only shaken up and had minor injuries.
"What happened, Rits?" Misato asked to her friend, confused.
Ritsuko put her hand on the back of her head and raised her gaze to Misato.
"Probably the core of Unit 01 has been turned off. She has shut down." Ritsuko spoke, stunned.
"What do you mean, it turned off?" Misato asked in shock.
"I don't know... I'll look at the parameters when we get this mess in order." Ritsuko said, looking at her hand. There was a little blood on it.
Everyone in the mighty Wunder was stunned and injured. Sakura was holding her shoulder in the medical ward, preparing for the dozens of injured that would be brought in; but she was wondering what could have happened.
"Is everyone okay?" One of the doctors asked.
"I'm fine... I think I dislocated my shoulder." Sakura spoke along with some who responded to the doctor's call.
"Whoever can, help the people next to you!" Ordered the doctor as he started to help Sakura.
Engine Room
The maintenance was not much better than the rest of the ship. Everything had blacked out, and they were moving with the help of flashlight. Maya spoke while looking for an emergency communicator.
"Turn on the N2 reactors, we have to get communication." She ordered
Maya found the communicator and promptly spoke up.
"Bridge, do you copy?"
"..."
"Bridge, do you copy?"
"..."
"Bridge, do you copy?"
"This is bridge. What happened, Maya?" Ritsuko spoke over the radio. It was obvious that she was relieved to see that Maya was okay.
"I don't know ma'am, unit one just rattled and shut down... I'm going to turn on the N2 reactors so we can move. It won't be fast but we can try to get back to New London." Maya explained her plan.
After a few seconds of waiting, she received the answer over the radio.
"Do that! And try to reconnect unit 01." Ritsuko ordered.
"Yes, ma'am." Maya spoke as she got to work.
Rei Ayanami's temporary room
Rei was getting up from the floor. She had been lying down, reading a book that had been handed to her by Mari, whom she was getting closer those days at Wunder.
Rei felt good in Mari and Sakura's presence. She was understanding the concept of friendship and she was enjoying the feeling, even if people were still looking at her with strange eyes. After all, they had never lived under the same roof as an Ayanami type before. However, they were realizing that this model was different, and they were beginning to get used to her presence, because she was seen constantly with Mari and Sakura; so they were starting to judge that she was not dangerous. She was still followed by a guard, but she didn't mind that.
Rei was reading when Wunder started shaking violently. She tried to hold on as best she could but ended up falling to the ground and hitting her head. She didn't notice any injuries, but thought something was wrong.
She wanted to get out so she could help, but remembered that she didn't know how to do anything but pilot. She thought about Sakura, and realizing that she could be useful in the medical ward; she promptly got up and tried to open her door. She saw that everything was without power, and would have to open it manually.
As she came out of her room she saw that her guard was injured in the doorway, like many other people who had been hurt. She bent down to try to help. The man looked at her suspiciously, but knew that she had never tried anything before, so she accepted her help.
Rei helped the injured guard up and they both went to Wunder's hospital. Rei had a little trouble carrying a man three times her weight, but she was doing what she could. She wanted to help, and she was enjoying the feeling of having a purpose other than piloting.
Upon arriving at the hospital, she was promptly attended by a nurse. Rei explained that the man needed care more than she did, so the nurse promptly started working on the guard. Rei was turning to leave when the guard held her arm, looked into her eyes and spoke.
"Thank you."
Rei nodded and turned, to stay out of the way. She crossed paths with Sakura, who seemed to be feeling the effects of having to work frantically.
"Suzuhara." Rei said in his soft voice.
Sakura turned to Rei, and promptly began to examine her for injuries.
"I'm fine," Rei said.
"That's nice... It's chaos here." Sakura spoke wearily as she looked around.
"I want to help." Rei said.
Sakura turned, looked into her red eyes and smiled.
"We could use a hand or two."
Rei felt a good sensation in her chest. She didn't know what it was but she liked it.
As the N2 reactor was activated, some sectors started to have power again: the engine room, bridge and the medical ward.
The Wunder began sailing to rescue the wounded from the ships that went down in the crash, and also to retrieve any equipment they could. They were heading back to New England to ask for help.
Everyone was still confused about everything that had happened, and hoped that they would be able to fly again soon.
Author's Notes: Please review, your critiques (Good or bad) are very important to me, you know that I take a lot into consideration what is said and it also gives me strength to continue this translation project.
I hope the chapter turned out well, it was hard to write the torture scene because they are complex and heavy, but I hope I did a good job, it's not over yet, and I hope I can get the message across that I have in my head.
Wunder's situation was fun, I hope it was well written.
Special thanks to YourBlandestNightmare, who is kindly correcting the grammatical errors in the English... thank you friend.
