How do you lose a trident?

Percy was relieved. After the counselor's meeting, he was finally clear of stealing the bolt. Sure, that still left Jason's bolt and now Nico's hat missing, but he was glad he wasn't a target anymore, and he was sure that the spar Jason had challenged him to was called off now.

Granted, Percy didn't like the way his innocence was proven. He'd much rather no one found out what he and Annabeth did that night on their date. He was secretly horrified when Piper and Jason presented their findings. So of course, he wasn't surprised when it got out all over camp about what happened.

Rumors always flew when it came to Percy and Annabeth, he could handle another rumor. It wasn't like Athena didn't already want to kill him.

"At least we can get your trident now." Annabeth told him as they left the counselor's meeting.

"Yeah." Percy was happy to finally be able to retrieve his trident. He didn't like having it locked away in the Big House, he just had a bad feeling about it.

As the ladder fell and Percy climbed up, the bad feeling in the pit of his stomach intensified. Annabeth looked normal, as if she didn't feel anything. Percy meanwhile felt something akin to being in presence of Hades. Just a pure dread that was twisting in his stomach.

Percy passed the war trophies, which had grown in number. Someone had even brought in a golden frying pan, Percy wondered which monster was using a frying pan for a weapon. Some of these trophies were gathered from Manhattan after Kronos's defeat or on the hills around Camp Half-Blood after the Romans and Greeks had to fight Octavian and his monster mercenaries.

Annabeth opened the closet and shoved the bedsheet aside. Where Percy's trident was supposed to be, was a empty space.

The dark feeling in Percy's stomach exploded into rage and panic. He was certain no one would find the trident, but the empty space told him otherwise. He was panicking because someone out there could be using his trident. His trident had his name on it, and if it could be identified as the weapon in a murder, Percy would be the prime suspect.

"Percy…" Annabeth turned, a shocked look spreading across her face.

"This isn't good." Percy muttered, "Really not good."

"Look around, maybe we'll find something that'll tell us what happened." Annabeth said.

Percy did what she said, partly because it was the only thing he could do. He looked on the floor to see if there were any marks left by the thief, only to be disappointed when he didn't find any.

Annabeth was meanwhile looking at the trophies to see if any had been moved. If she could find fingerprints, she could get the Hephaestus cabin or her siblings to find out who the fingerprints belonged to.

Percy was checking the closet for any mark when he heard Annabeth say, "Hey, look at this!"

Percy jogged over and looked at what Annabeth was pointing at. There was a jar with what looked like a bunch of rusted drachmas from Ancient Greece sitting on a shelf. The drachmas weren't what caught Annabeth's attention though. It was the dust marks on it.

Percy leaned in and noticed the dust was disturbed, definitely by accident. There were no fingerprints, but something had brushed against it, and the marks were too big to be from bugs. Someone had walked past the jar and brushed it by accident.

"Someone was up here, and it wasn't us." Percy said.

"The only thing is, we don't know who. Barely anyone comes up here." Annabeth said. She had her thinking face on, which had Percy hopeful. Annabeth was one of the smartest people he knew, he'd trust even her best guess. "Maybe we could ask Chiron." She said.

"Worth a shot." Percy said.

The two left the attic and went to Chiron's office. Chiron was in his office, reading reports from satyrs around the country. He looked up when Percy and Annabeth walked in. "May I help you, Percy, Annabeth?" He said.

"Sir, you wouldn't have happened to see anyone go into the attic would you?" Percy asked.

Chiron sat back in his chair and seemed to be thinking. "No, not anyone in recent memory. Not many campers go up there anymore, I'm afraid." He said, "Why do you ask?"

"Well, I hid my trident up there so Jason wouldn't be able to get it. Now it's kind of missing." Percy said.

"Kind of?" Chiron asked.

"It's missing, but we found a jar that shows someone was up there. We just don't know who." Percy said.

Chiron rubbed his eyes and let out a tired groan, "This is the worst case scenario. You, Jason, and Nico are missing your godly gifts. I'll have to tell this to Olympus as well."

"Have the gods said anything?" Annabeth asked.

"Aside from inter-family arguing, no." Chiron said, "Everyone seems to be pointing to one of Hermes's children as the thief, but Connor has a solid defense against any accusations. He's let us search every spot in his cabin and we never found Jason's bolt."

"So, we'll just have to keep looking out for this thief then?" Percy asked.

"I'm afraid that's all you can do, lad." Chiron said.
