They had a good thing going, him and her. They just kinda drifted together, y'know? Maka would go off with the other girls, Blackstar would rope Kid into a dick-measuring contest that usually ended up making the local news, and never in a good way.
So it was normally just the two of them left sitting there. He couldn't quite remember when they'd started, but that wasn't nothing to sweat about anyways. Cause cool guys like him don't sweat the small stuff.
Neither of them were all that big on talking anyway. They'd often just wander the streets of Death City, just taking it all in. It was certainly different than what he was used to, even after all these years. And here he was sounding like some uncool old geezer. Like Maka's dad, hehe, what a lame guy.
Point is, he'd grown up rich, but with a really annoying family, so it balanced out. Those weekly phone calls sucked, but it was better than the daily ones when he'd first started. They weren't bad people, just a little too much. Like cartoon characters brought to life. So he guessed that's why he had to be so cool all the time, to balance out their craziness.
He turned the corner to his and Maka's apartment, Chrona behind him. It had been like this for awhile now. They'd wander around for a few hours, go to that café for whatever, his treat, and then just wind up back here.
They oftentimes lazed about in the living room, or his room if Blair was around. They'd had a good thing going, and Soul didn't see the need for any real change.
She was in the hospital ward in the Indian branch of the DWMA.
She'd been injured on a mission, somewhere in India. So naturally, she hadn't been around. There had been a problem with her scream resonance, how it didn't affect the Kishin. How it had nearly cut her in half.
So he'd just pretended that she was fine, but on a mission. It wasn't as great walking alone. Neither was the café. And it was different, overall, being home alone when he felt he wasn't supposed to be. It all was so wrong doing this all alone. The usual comfortable silence was choking him.
So he avoided all that. For weeks. Of course, Maka had obviously had to choose short missions. It just couldn't be a long one. One so long and intense that he didn't have to think about anything but the target.
But soon enough, the target was a witch. And with that, he'd become a Death Scythe.
The hospital here was different, and she didn't know if she could deal with it. The people who worked here talked all funny, and what if she managed to not hear something correctly and then they had to give her a shot with a needle-and she couldn't deal with needles cause needles were sharp and what if she accidentally got her eye poked out? She knew she wouldn't be able to deal with that.
Or-or if they made her read old magazines? But what if they weren't in English? She didn't know how to deal with that. Or what if she was going to get out, but walked out in the hospital gown and people stared at her and started talking with their funny voices and she couldn't understand them and then they started pointing and she didn't know what to do and she died? She didn't want to die. Or-or what if- Oh the machine is making that beeping noise again. And now her arm feels all tingly. And now she's all sleepy.
It had been nearly three months now. Maka had came home excitedly last night, saying that she'd be back soon. And sure enough, she was at the academy the next day.
It took about a month more until things went back to normal, or as normal as they could be considering she'd had her spine severed in three places. It was the black blood that had saved her life and allowed her to at least be able to walk again. But she wouldn't be able to do missions for at least a few years. Something about her nervous system was fried by the trauma. Too big a risk. Maka had told him exactly what it was, but all that science stuff went over his head.
Overall, it didn't change much, only where they'd meet up. Instead of breaking off from the group, now the café served as their rendezvous. They'd order their usual, the waitress just bringing it by now. And then they'd just walk. But now he'd hold her hand, y'know, to make sure nothing happened cause of her injuries.
They got to the apartment, the stairs being particularly a hassle cause it rattled her spine. So he'd made sure to let her have the recliner seat this time. And he pretended to not notice when her body shook from suppressed sobs.
It had been about a month and a week after she'd got back that Soul decided something had to give. So he'd broke the silence of their afternoon walk.
"Well, uh. Maka's erm, well leaving. Lord Death says that with how she beat the Kishin and I got my witches soul awhile back, that she's gonna train her weapon form with her mom. Just thought you should have a heads up so it don't really uh, yeah..."
And it was a week after that when Maka had announced it officially.
And a week after that that Blair had left, having shacked up with Maka's dad who'd suddenly transferred Australia.
And soon after that that Blackstar and Tsubaki left for a year long training trip in Japan.
Kid and the sisters were always gone too.
And it was then that he'd moved closer to the academy, on a ground floor apartment, so Chrona wouldn't hurt herself getting upstairs. Not that she'd been there yet.
They'd not really had much time to hang around one another since he'd gave her the news about Maka leaving. But he made a point to keep tabs on her. Cause cool guys like him gotta make sure their friends are alright.
It was a total of one week and two days before he actively sought her out. And it was like nothing had changed, the duo wandering the city they both knew like the back of their hand. And Soul was content.
She didn't know when Soul's house became her house, just that one morning when she woke up there, all her clothes were there. And surprisingly, she could kind of deal with it.
But what about the spiders? What if they'd brought her clothes here and were hiding in them to bite her? And what if they were radioactive like the movie? She didn't know if she'd be able to deal with shooting webs from her fingers. And what if the government found out and she was taken to a research lab where they did all kinds of tests on her, and then she accidentally killed all of them and had to live out the rest of her days in Antarctica with the penguins and then she couldn't understand them and they'd all be honking at her and she didn't know how to deal with that.
It had only been two and a half months since Maka had left that Chrona had come to stay with him. Some bureaucracy about how she was no longer on active duty she couldn't technically live in the dorms. So he'd had her stuff put in the guest room and the rest was history.
It was about three months after that when they'd started sleeping together, but like not in that way. It just kinda happened. She had all kinds of trauma cause of her childhood, so it manifested in her extreme anxiety and screaming nightmares.
She hadn't been there three days when he'd heard the screaming and came in to her room to see her thrashing about the bed. And so, they'd at first slept in the living room side by side on the couch, him keeping watch over her until he passed out too.
It had continued like this until it eventually they had somehow ended up in his bed, not that he'd minded much, bed was better than couch. But, she was clingy. Like, in her sleep. But that was fine, cool guys don't get all worked up over helping their friend resolve trauma.
So things went on like this for awhile, neither of them really questioning it. They did talk a bit more, which was whatever, but like. People kept asking him stupid shit like: "When's the wedding?"
Or like, when he'd been on Skype with his family, and they'd saw her and to this day harassed him about her. It didn't piss him off as much as he'd put on.
They'd been talking a lot more lately, like she was finally coming out of her shell. It was still weird having to talk around eggshells on certain things so she wouldn't get all anxious. But that was fine, cause even though it sucked at first, they had a pretty good thing going, and he didn't wanna screw it up.
So Blackstar had at last minute decided to take another year to master some ninja shit in Japan. And his hangouts with Kid were few and far between, mostly just dinner at his place and discussing business. The sisters were a bit too much for him to deal with. Nothing against them, but they'd never hung out outside of a group setting, so it would be weird.
Still not much from Maka aside from the occasional postcard or a text answered in the middle of the night. Last he'd heard she was in Ireland.
Soul had never really bothered to try his hand at dating, cause he was too cool to use those websites, that and the other girl would never understand about him and Chrona. But it was whatever, a cool guy like him would never abandon his friend.
He'd mentioned dating and all that to Chrona once or twice, but neither of them really expanded upon the topic. So it was quickly dropped.
So she'd been living with him for a year now. Which just was now, y'know? It was normal for him now to pry her off him first thing, and do Death Scythe business, which was mostly learning about spiritual shit with Lord Death, or being a glorified substitute teacher. They still would wander the town, mostly in the early evening due to his day job. It was actually kinda alright.
Eventually, like two years after Maka left, Soul had gave up on denying any rumors. Yeah, they were basically together, but no, not in that way.
Yeah, they did pretty much everything together, so what?
So it'd been almost two years now since she'd moved in. And Chrona had decided they were in fact together, which was weird. Like, not because of that. But more like how she reacted to that new waitress at the café flirting with him.
Not much really changed, aside from her shoving her tongue down his throat in the café. And at home. Turns out she's really into it or something. Not that Soul would complain. But like, she would get like, really possessive at the most random things. But whatever.
So Maka was coming back soon, and Blackstar had been back for a few months now. So everything was probably going back to normal now. Except for him and Chrona. They had a pretty good thing going, and he was more scared of her reaction dare he break it.
If there's interest I'll continue, cause I've got some more plot in my head. Mostly drama when Maka gets back. So comment for more, I guess.
