The Never Ending Rain
Chapter Four
Outside in the pouring rain, a low rumble rolled across the dark gray sky. Mave glanced around, making sure the close was clear before pulling out a medium size blue orb from her pocket.
After a few moments, the orb glowed, revealing the face of a blond-haired man with sea-blue eyes.
"Why are you outside?" the blond-haired man asked.
"To keep a low-profile master, but I sensed you wanted to talk to me?" Mave said before looking around.
"Yes, I did. I know you have witnessed Poseidon's child's power. He will bring an end to our plans; hence, I want you to get rid of him."
"That's already been taken care of. Any moment he will fall into a deep sleep and never wake up."
The blond-haired man nodded as a smile spread across his lips. "I always knew picking you out of the herd was a good idea."
Mave smiled. It faded quickly when her ears twitched. Glancing around, she spotted no one at first. But the moment she turned toward the cabin, she locked eyes on Yolanda.
"Something wrong?" the blond-haired man asked.
"Maybe it looks like Poseidon's favorite has figured me out." Mave replied.
"Well, you know what to do."
"Indeed," Mave said, slipping the orb back into her pocket.
Walking a little closer, Yolanda stopped as Mave placed her hand on the end of her staff.
"Talking to your boss?" Yolanda asked, twirling her staff in her hand a few away from her.
"What do you mean, I was just working on the gate," Mave replied.
"Don't play dumb with me. Ever since you two came here, I smelled something wasn't right. It was rotten and now that's all I can smell coming from you."
Mave's eyes flicker as she pulled her staff off her back. Her once cerulean green eyes gave off a dark glow, confirming Yolanda's suspicions.
"You got me; I take it my plan for the boy fell through?" Mave asked.
"Of course, I can't let you hurt his kid," Yolanda replied.
Gritting her teeth, Mave charged at Yolanda, but she stepped to the side, smacking Mave on her back, causing her to stumble. Turning around, Mave screamed as Yolanda slipped into her fighting stance as Mave charged toward her again.
"That's right, let's end this facade once and for all,"
Meanwhile, back inside the cabin, Percy continued sleeping while Nautica kept a close eye on him. She would glance out the window from time to time, hoping to see Yolanda or Mave. But she had no such luck, as the lighting grew more frequent and the roars of thunder grew close, along with the rain smacking against the windows, followed by wailing winds. They were not the only ones who knew something was wrong.
Outside, the wind blew fiercely as the rain smacked Yolanda and Mave in the face, but neither of them paid it any attention as they continued fighting.
With two swift kicks and a smack on the head with the end of her staff, Mave stumbled back, falling into a large puddle of mud. Looking down up at Mave, Yolanda backed up when she noticed two arms shoot out of Mave's waist. Mave hissed, then opened her mouth, spewing a white sticky substance, wrapping Yolanda's hands and arms, causing her to drop her staff.
Struggling to get free, Yolanda's eyes narrowed as Mave rose to her feet. She confidently walked towards Yolanda, who put her head down and charged at her like a bull, knocking Mave against the gate. Angry, Mave grab Yolanda by the neck and threw her down to the ground. Leaving Yolanda rolling around in pain.
"Interesting, a water spider never seen one in person before," Yolanda said, as she hopped back to her feet.
"I am glad you find me interesting pity you won't be alive to enjoy it." The water spider replied.
Yolanda smiled, shaking her head, chuckling.
"What's so funny? Mave asked in an annoyed tone. "Soon you'll be no more and my master's chaos will be unstoppable."
"You bad guys always talk too much and celebrate way too early," Yolanda said.
Mave tilted her head as Yolanda backed away from her.
"The gate it's a lightning rod."
Mave's eyes widen but before she reacted a lightning bolt struck the gate sending waves through Mave's body as a blood-curdling scream escaped her before she dropped to the ground, charred and twitching.
Breaking free of the webbing, Yolanda picked up her staff, glancing up at the sky.
Thanks.
Inside the cabin, pacing the floor back and forth in front of the door and windows, Nautica clasp and twisted her hands together as she waited for Yolanda to come through the door. She stopped and turned to the couch when a yawn reached her ears. Percy was awake. He sat up and rubbed his eyes before stretching his arms out. Looking around the room, he only noticed him and Nautica. Turning around, he didn't find anyone in the kitchen either.
"Hey where did Yolanda go?" Percy asked, followed by another yawn.
His answer came when the front door burst open and a roped up burned Mave rolled into the living room with a muddy Yolanda entered behind her. She looked to Percy and Nautica, who were staring at Mave, who transformed more into her spider form with half of her body looking human, while the other half was a navy-blue spider.
"Alright, listen up. Mave is a water spider," Yolanda said, looking to Percy. "It's a creature known to mimic its prey and keep them alive in a cocoon while they continue to use their appearance and memories."
"Great, now we have to find her and Poseidon," Nautica said, shaking her head.
"I said she was close by," Yolanda said, flexing her hands. "Ugh, I hate doing this."
Noticing what Yolanda was about to do, Nautica backed up and joined Percy on the couch. This only confused him even more.
"Hate doing what?" Percy finally asked.
Yolanda sighed as she looked at Percy.
"You are about to see why I am your father's favorite."
Taking a deep breath, Yolanda placed her hands on the water's spider's head. At first nothing happened, but then Yolanda grits her teeth and closed her eyes. After a few seconds, her eyes shot open, and they were completely white.
Images flashed through Yolanda's mind as her shaking hands remained on the spider's head. Percy's eyes widen and took a step back as Mave morphed into an enormous spider.
"She is in a cave just a few miles away from here," Yolanda said in a distorted voice as she let go of the spider's head.
The injured spider looked around, hissing, before staggering toward the door.
"Follow the spider and you will find Mave."
Nodding, Nautica looked to Percy. "Keep an eye on her."
Percy nodded as he watched Nautica grab her sabers and run after the spider, shutting the door behind her. Percy then turned to Yolanda, whose eyes were still white as she stood in place.
"Yolanda?" Percy asked, trying to get thought to her.
Turning around, Percy backed up as Yolanda move towards Percy, stopping on inches away from his face. Her eyes flickered, which sent shivers down Percy's spine. Swallowing hard, he looked into Yolanda's white eyes.
"The road will not be easy to find your father, for the twins are relentless."
"Twins?" Percy pondered, then he remembered the man and woman he saw through his father's eyes.
"Okay, so they're twins," he said to himself.
Yolanda's eyes flickered even more than a white aura lined her body. Percy placed his hands on Yolanda's shoulders. Concentrating, Percy's cerulean aura lined his body, giving off a gently cool sensation, hoping to counter Yolanda's aura.
"Twins…. revenge. It's all about revenge and…. chaos."
Biting his lip, Percy pushed his cerulean aura, giving off an icy feeling that caused Yolanda to shiver.
Blinking her eyes, Yolanda shook her head as her white eyes returned to normal. Pulling away, Yolanda looked down at her mud ridden clothes.
"Oh, I am a mess, but thank you, that cold did the trick," Yolanda said, followed with a smile.
"I am glad it worked. It's the only thing I could think of." Percy replied.
Yolanda smiled; he is truly like his father. Shaking her head, she forced herself back to the task at hand.
"Let me get changed, then we can talk."
Percy nodded as Yolanda walked into her bedroom. While he sat back down on the couch.
"Where is Nautica?" Yolanda asked from her bedroom.
"She followed the water spider to get Mave back," Percy said.
"Good," Yolanda said, walking back into the living room in a clean black shirt with matching color jeans, socks and sneakers.
"So, you're a psychic?"
"I guess you can say that." Yolanda said, sitting down on the couch beside Percy. "Sometimes I don't have to touch the person to read their mind. It just happens."
"Nice. We have a young seer at the camp, but we don't see her much because of her special studies."
"Hm, at least she is getting trained to use her gift." My family kept mines under wrap for a while and when they emerged, I had to figure out most of it on my own."
Percy nodded, then he remembered what he wanted to ask Yolanda.
"When you are under, you said something about twins and how this is all about revenge and chaos," Percy said, repeating her words. "Did you get the twins' names?"
Yolanda closed her eyes, trying to recall the images of the supposed twins. The moment they crossed her mind, she opened her eyes.
"I remember a man and a woman with blond hair and blue eyes. They had a strange crest on their clothing and their names were…. Eric and Elise. The spider is Eric's favorite pet.
"Okay, that's good. Do you remember anything else that could help?" Percy asked.
Yolanda tilted her head as more images crossed her mind.
"This is revenge on your father, but when I try to find out why things get hazy, I don't think the spider knows why they are doing this."
"So, they are angry at him and their solution is to make the world suffer?" Percy asked.
"That's usually how it goes. Mortals are always caught in the middle of immortal matters." Yolanda replied.
Percy wanted to ask more questions, but the door opened. Yolanda and Percy stood up as Nautica entered, with Mave by her side.
Yolanda took a whiff of the air around the two women. A smile spread across her lips as a welcoming cerulean scent welcomed her.
"It's good to finally meet you," Yolanda said.
"Like wise," Mave said, looking between Yolanda and Percy.
Walking over to Mave, Percy shook her hand.
"The spider is dead. I got rid of it the moment I found Mave's cocoon. But I also found this." Nautica said, pulling out a blue orb from her pocket.
Yolanda eyed the blue orb and moved toward it. The scent it gave off was intoxicating. It smelled like blue raspberry cotton candy. Oh, she wanted to get near it and just touch it. Her eyes flicker between white and brown as she reached out toward the glowing blue orb. Percy grab her hand, pulling her back, which caused her eyes to return to normal. Mave looked glanced to Nautica.
"Destroy it." Mave commanded.
Nautica dropped the orb on the floor and smashed it with her foot. Mave looked back to Yolanda, who jerked once more.
"You still with us?" Mave asked, looking back at Yolanda.
"Yeah, sorry about that those silly gifts of mine." Yolanda said, shaking her head.
"Hm, from your response, the orb must have been more than just a communicator.
"Much more… it's enchanted," Yolanda said as she walked over to her closet, handing Nautica and broom and dustpan. "Can you clean that up, please?
Grumbling, Nautica brushed up the shattered orb and threw it away.
"Yolanda smiled. "Thank you,"
Mave and Percy laughed as Nautica gave them a death glare. Yolanda laughed as well, but stopped when images flashed through her mind, causing her to blink a lot and stumble back onto the couch. Percy and Mave reached out to help, but Yolanda shook her head.
"I'm fine. I just got a little overwhelmed."
"What did you see?" Nautica asked.
"A city north of here by the sea, but it's not what seems."
Mave, Nautica, and Percy looked at one another before Yolanda spoke again.
"You three need to go there, but be careful, for it's like walking right into a spider's web."
Not wasting any time, Mave and Nautica walked to the door while Percy stood beside Yolanda. Smiling, Yolanda placed a hand on Percy's shoulder.
"Go, I'll catch up later. There is something I need to do first."
Nodding, Percy joined Mave and Nautica as they left, shutting the door behind them.
Leaning back on the couch, Yolanda sighed.
"The tide is changing. Hang on Poseidon. It won't be long now."
