L collapsed, lifeless, in Raito's arms. Raito stared at him for a moment, silent and dumbfounded. He hadn't ever actually considered this possible, had never seen it happening. L wasn't supposed to die. He couldn't die. He couldn't.
It just couldn't happen.
L was yanked roughly out of sleep by Raito's screaming and a sharp tug on his wrist. Slowly, he sat up, rubbing his unchained hand across his sleep-fogged eyes.
"Whaa's wrong, Raito-kun?" he asked thickly, swallowing a yawn as he turned toward the other teen.
Raito's sharp screaming dropped into a harsh sobbing. He raised sweating, shaking hands to his face, trying to stem the thick, fast flow of hot tears that were now coursing over his face. His nightshirt was soaked through with sweat, and it clung to his soft, pale skin in damp patches. The bumps and knobs of his spine seemed to form an odd mountain ridge in the moonlight, and the up-and-down hills of his ribs disappeared and reappeared as his chest rose and fell with the rapid pace of his breathing.
"Nightmare?" L asked softly, sympathetically. He had dreams of his own, and oh, how they hurt. He could understand the pain, the shock, the terror. Tenderly, he set his chin against Raito's twitching shoulder. His arms looped around him and drew the quivering man into the cage of his arms. Carefully, L brought him against his hard, muscular chest, letting Raito relax in the warmth of his bare chest.
Raito turned his face against L's shoulder, sobbing into his lover's skin. He hugged himself and let L hug him in return, trembling and shaking his grasp. L pressed soft kisses to Raito's neck and shoulders, then traced them up along his forehead and over his face.
"It's okay," L whispered. "It's okay. It's just a nightmare." He cuddled Raito gently, whispering reassuring things in his ear. He ran his hands up and down along lover's sweaty skin, working to calm him.
Finally, Raito was calm enough that L could convince him to lie down next to him, in his arms, buried against his chest. Softly, he kissed the teen.
"What'd you dream of, Raito?" he asked softly.
Raito sniffled miserably, reaching forward to stroke L's hair as if he was trying to reassure himself that L was still there, that the eccentric detective always would be there.
"You...you died," he whispered softly.
L pulled the shaken genius close. "Oh, Raito, love..."
Raito woke up crying.
Heheheh...interpret that the way you will... (slinks away, grinning evilly)
