Chapter 11: Matlin Part III
After having lunch with her friends, they decided to take a walk through the park while her friends were doing their own thing (Sophia was texting some guy she was seeing, Rosa was admiring the flowers and Daphne and Layla were in deep conversation about some hot topic), Maitlin picked up her guitar, strumming it absentmindedly to try and figure out this song but this cursed writers block was the worst.
After half an hour of trying, Matlin decided to put the guitar away and go out a quick flight while her friends were still preoccupied. That usually helped her figure this stuff out
"Where are you going, Matlin?..."Daphne asked.
"I'm gonna take a flight. I'll be back in a bit..."She answered before taking off.
Once in the sky, Matlin tried to clear her mind and relax, but her frustration from earlier was all she could think about.
"Why does this have to be so hard?..."Matlin thought..."You can beat the worst in ghost zone but you can't write a song..."
She'd written the music now, she just needed the words but she had an easier time punching Ember McLain than dealing with this stupid writer's block.
Matlin sighed in defeat.
The white haired fairy soon landed back to the ground, changed back and shook her head, while her friends looked curious.
"What's up, Matlin?..."Daphne asked.
"Nothing..."Matlin said.
"Yeah, right..."Layla said sarcastically.
"Come on, you can tell us..." Rosa said in a sweet, understanding tone.
Matlin looked around to all her friends concerned faces and sighed. She knew from personal experience that they weren't going to let up. She loves them but this insistence of theirs gets aggravating at times.
"Come on, tell us..."Tori insisted.
Matlin sighed before giving in.
"It's nothing major, I am just having writer's block..."Matlin said.
"Oh..."They all said in an understanding way.
Like her mom, Matlin is a passionate musician and much like her aunt Jazz, she was a total perfectionist in that area. She never played anything to a crowd until it was just right.
"That explains it, and Soph here said you were thinking about a guy or something..."Daphne said while the other girls sighed internally.
"Clueless..."They, minus Matlin, thought simultaneously.
"I know I'm hiding what I think of Drake, but she can't be this clueless? Did she and I swap personalities with a spell when we were kids? Because I swear she acts more like my dad's kid than King Sky's..."Matlin thought.
She loves her dad very much and she also loves Daphne like a sister but her dad didn't get the title of "Clueless One" for nothing, at least that it what her aunt Jazz and Uncle Tucker used to tell her.
She snapped out of it when Daphne spoke again.
"I can't wait to hear it. It's gonna rock the Magical dimension..."The strawberry blonde said.
"Come on, its not going to be a hot single, like my mom's music..." Matlin quipped with a giggle.
"Don't sell yourself short, you rock..." Sophia said.
"Totally..." Layla said.
"It's true..."Tori said as she smiled.
"Hey, you're a great musician, just like Aunt Musa. Don't push yourself too much, we all know that it'll rock..."Daphne said in an encouraging way.
Matlin smiled at that.
"Thanks, guys. I needed to hear that..."She said.
"What are friends for?.."Rosa said, smiling.
Matlin smiled too.
Maybe Daphne was right. Maybe she was pushing herself too much pressure on herself. Maybe she just needed to relax and figure out the rest of her song later.
It's not like the lyrics were just going to fall into her lap like magic. Definitely not by magic since she rather the music comes to her naturally. It wouldn't feel right if she took the easy route, especially since this is a subject she has close to her heart.
"Thanks, girls..." Matlin said with a smile.
"You can thank us by getting us more lattes if you are heading back..." Sophie said.
"Sophia!..." Daphne ribbed her playfully.
"What?..."The brunette princess said playfully..."A girls gotta have her caffeine..."She said and they all laughed.
"As you wish, your grace..."Matlin said with a giggle, while Sophia pouted.
"Again?!..."She whined.
"Couldn't help myself..." Matlin said with a shrug.
Sophia rolled her eyes, trying hard not to laugh herself.
"You're lucky you're one of the best friends I've ever had..." She admitted with a half-smile.
Matlin giggled again.
"Back at ya..."She said as she and the others went to get refills.
Matlin smiled.
Her friends were the best in the world.
With that all, Matlin and her friends soon left the area, to go back on their shopping spree and Matlin tried to relax herself.
She'll get that song done, sooner or later.
Later
Matlin went home to continue working on her song and thinking about the cute boy who inspired it. She decided to stop trying to force herself. The words would come when they will come.
"Drake..."She thought as she strummed the cords as she thought about the handsome prince that she loves.
She thought back to her twelfth birthday and her seeing Prince Drake after he had returned from his training trip in Domino and she saw how much he had grown from that annoying boy who used to pull pranks on her and her friends and she'd respond by pranking him back with just as much maturity as expected from a little kid.
Matlin smiled. Those were the good old days. Back when things made sense and she didn't have these confusing feelings. Back before visions of the handsome prince sweeping her off her feet would dance in her head and thoughts of their first kiss played like a movie when her eyes closed.
As well as her new desire to write this love song about him. If only she did not have this lousy writer's block. She didn't want to ask her mom for help with this song, since she'd likely have to tell her who it is for and she did NOT want to have that kind of conversation.
Besides, she wanted to write this all on her own. However, it was hard to get it right. Every time she thinks she had it, she second guessed the lyrics.
"Why is this so hard?..."Matlin said, putting her guitar down.
She wasn't trying to fight Pariah Dark or wearing the helmet of fate. She was trying to write a love song. A song to someone she has told no one about her feelings for. It was getting stressful to the point where she rubbed her hands through her hair.
That's when she heard her father.
"Matlin? Are you up there?..." Danny was heard.
"Yeah, dad!..." Matlin said.
"Matlin, can you come downstairs. You're mother needs us to get fruit from the store and to find her prenatal vitamins..."Her father's voice called.
"Coming..."Matlin said as she placed her guitar down and fazed downstairs.
Later
After a few minutes of flying together, carrying some groceries, Danny saw his daughter just zoning out, looking out at the sky which was now nighttime.
"Careful, Sprite. Those fruits are for your mother to make drinks for pregnancy... they're not exactly easy to find this season... or world..." Danny explained.
"Sorry, dad..." Matlin said, snapping out of it.
Danny raised a brow at her behavior. Matlin was never this distracted when they flew together, except when she was a child, but the girl was curios about so much of the world.
"Everything okay?..." Danny asked.
"Super..." She responded with a fake grin.
Danny shook his head and crossed his arms.
Now he is concerned. His usually peppy, good spirited girl he'd raised was keeping something from him.
But what? And why?
"Matlin..." Danny said, knowing she's hiding something... "Come on , it's me. It's dad. We don't keep secrets from each other..."He added in a paternal vouce.
''I know, dad..." Matilin said, not wanting to upset her dad since she knew this is a subject he would not like to hear.
"It's just... you wouldn't get it...girl stuff..." She said, not even able to look her dad in the eye anymore.
"Girl stuff'?..." Danny thought, recognizing the look on Matlin's face.
She was embarrassed and there was only ONE subject that gets this kind of reaction out of a teenager. One subject where he did the same thing when his parents asked about this, when ghosts weren't involved. One subject Danny was hoping he wouldn't have to talk about for a while longer
The father sighed. He was dreading this conversation
"Is it...a boy?..."Danny asked in an uncomfortable way.
Matlin flinched and Danny knew that he was on target. While her dad was understanding that she would like boys at this age, that didn't mean he was protective in his own right.
"I...uh..."Matlin stammered.
She looked down, her face red. Danny saw this and sighed.
"Mattlin, please just talk to me..." Danny asked ..."I promise this can be just between us..."He said.
"No mom?..." Matlin asked and Danny gave her a look.
"Look, I love her but she might try to help me and I want to figure this out on my own..."The daughter said.
That and she MIGHT try and "help" her out, which could be totally embarrassing.
Danny raised a brow, before nodding.
"No mom..." Danny promised.
"Okay.." Matlin sighed. "I do like someone... someone who is... cool... and fun... and handsome..."Matlin said as her expression turned lovesick.
Danny saw this and felt...what all father's feel when they learn their daughter is in love with someone. He knew that this day would come, he just didn't expect it to come so soon.
Still, his daughter likes someone and he wanted to be supportive like his parents were with him...as long as the guy is not some lousy punk who doesn't deserve her.
"If it's Johnny and Kitty's boy, I'm going to kick that greasy heard biker across the ghost zone..." Danny thought, imagining using Johnny 13 to deal with his misplaced aggression since he can't exactly target his son unless he violates some code of The Observant's laws or tried to cause trouble in Amity Park.
Besides, Danny doesn't like picking fights with his enemies' kids and youngsters, unless they are super villains who leave him no choice.
He didn't want to be seen as overprotective. It's not like he was Phantasma's dad, who attacked ANY male just for being close to his daughter, even after she reached adulthood. He really felt bad for Phanty's husband and all the trouble The Phantom puts him through, just because The Phantom took overprotective father to an insane level.
"That guy must have the strongest will on the planet to put up with THAT spook and his explosive temper, even if the old spook does have a soft spot for his granddaughter. I don't know how Phanty deals with her dad...." Danny thought
Matlin had stopped talking and was looking back to see her dad ha a weird look on his face.
"Uh, dad?..."She asked, snapping her dad out of his thoughts.
"Sorry, I was just thinking..."Danny said..."So, about this boy?..."He pressed on.
His daughter sighed and had a reluctant look on her face.
"Do we have to?..." Matlin asked..."It's nothing, really..."She said.
Danny knew better, though.
"It has to be something, if you don't want me getting your mom involved..."The father said.
Matlin looked down and Danny gave her an encouraging look.
"Come on, I promise that it will be between us..."He said.
Matlin was quiet for a moment, before conceding.
"I'm in love..."Matlin finally admitted.
Danny tried not to flinch at that word.
"Love is a strong word, Sprite..."Was what he said, trying to process this well.
"I know..."Was all she said.
"So, who is the lucky guy?..."Danny asked and his daughter flinched.
Marlin avoided her father's face as she felt a blush forming. Her mind couldn't help but imagine Drake and his red hair but...she just can't say that to her dad...not to his face, at least.
"Look... let's just avoid the name for now..." Matlin said... "The point is... I'm not sure what to do regarding how I feel for him..."She added, looking lost in her feelings.
Danny chuckled as his daughter glared at him. He had soooo been there before.
"That's not really a problem for me sweetie, though I am happily married... " Danny joked.
Matilin gave him a look, crossing her arms in annoyance and Danny saw it.
"Okay, bad joke. Got it..." Danny said as he flew over to Matlin,
"How are you trying to do it?..."He asked.
"A song..." Matilin answered.
"A song?..."He asked and his daughter nodded.
"Yeah, but I have writers block. He's so cool and strong and funny and nice. I just don't know how to put my thoughts into words..."She admitted, looking bummed.
Danny put his hand on his daughter's head and ruffled her hair a bit.
"You don't have to say his name... but if this person is as great as your describe, he'll love your song..." Danny assured her.
"Really?..." Matlin asked.
"Your mother and I love your songs, not just because we're required to as parents..." Danny said.
He flew closer, placing his arm across Matlin's shoulder.
"And if he doesn't, well, maybe he's not the right guy for you..."He said.
"That's what I'm afraid of..." Matlin said.
She didn't want to believe that. She wanted to believe that she and Drake would be together forever
Danny realized what she must be thinking and decided to cheer her up.
"Tell me... the first time you thought about love and woke up that morning... was he the first person in your head?..."He asked
"Yes..." Matlin said.
"Then... I trust your feelings on him. That's how I realized what your mother meant to me..."Danny said and Matlin looked amazed.
She knew the story about how her parents met and fell in love. They met at some dating service and they picked each other over all the other people they could have chosen.
"Is it really that simple?..." Matlin asked.
"Sometimes... I won't lie, sometimes love really is that simple, Sprite and sometimes it's not..." Danny said..."Before I met your mother, I was lousy with girls..."Danny said.
"You?..."Matlin said, finding that hard to believe, given how many women seem to throw themselves at her dad and all the magazines calling him a hunk.
"Love is hard when you're young..."Danny said.
"You don't have to tell me..."Matlin said, knowing how true that is.
Danny gave her an encouraging smile.
"Don't worry, it gets better..."He said.
His daughter finally smiled at that, feeling better now.
"Thanks, dad..."Matlin said as she hugged him.
"Of course, Sprite..." Danny said, hugging her back.
However, Danny stopped hugging his daughter to add this bit.
"But if he hurts you, he'll be dealing with me.."Danny said protectively.
"Dad..."Matlin said with an eye roll.
"I promise that won't hurt him, but he won't know that, will he?..." Danny said with a knowing smirk.
Matlin tried very hard to suppress her giggles.
"No threatening to throw him into the ghost zone..." Matlin said, trying to sound stern like her mom did.
"I won't as long as he doesn't do anything he knows he SHOULDN'T..." Danny said
"Dad..." Matlin said in a light warning.
"Fine... fine... I won't do anything to him... directly. I think Ben and an old friend in Japan might owe me a favor..."He said quickly but his daughter heard him.
"Dad!..." Matlin said, laughing a little before rolling her eyes.
She knew her father was one of the strongest people on the planet but he lived by a code and he followed it every day.
He wouldn't hurt Drake...at least physically.
Danny laughed too, happy that his daughter is happy again.
"What do you say, after we give your mom her pumpkin and marshmallow smoothie, we go out and fly above the clouds?..." Danny asked.
"Make shapes from clouds again?..." She asked with a chuckle
Danny shrugged.
"I know you're not 8 anymore, but whatever makes you happy..." Danny said.
"Sure, dad..." Matlin said.
Later
The Half ghost and his half fairy daughter flew towards their home in Magix. Once they took care of Musa's need, they went out and were flying around , making shapes in the clouds, racing around Alfea and listening to music from a nearby jazz club.
After making shapes in the clouds and catching the Box Ghost( seriously HOW he even got into this dimension, Danny had no idea),the father and daughter had flown home.
"Thanks again, dad..."Matlin said after changing back into her base form.
"Anytime, Sprite..." He said.
After that, Matlin went to her room and Danny went to the living room to see Musa on the couch, having finished her FIFTH pumpkin-marshmallow smoothie.
"What was that about?..." Musa asked.
"Just father-daughter talk, is all..." Danny said.
Musa smiled upon hearing that.
"Oh really, what about?..."Musa asked.
"Sorry but as the coolest dad ever as Matlin put it, can't betray her trust..."Danny said.
Musa smiled, seeing that Danny and Matlin were still as close as ever.
"Honey, since you're here, can you get me some pineapple and melon, please..."Musa said to her husband.
"Yes, Dear..."Danny said, knowing full well he still has six months of cravings to deal with.
Upstairs
Matlin had gone to her room to work on her song, no doubt her dad was telling her mom all about his advice and hiding what it was about. The teenage girl got back to her bed and took out her notebook for her songs.
"Now... what am I gonna write for the missing lyrics..." She said before memories flashed through her head.
She thought about her time with her dad and her memories of Drake. The clouds, the flight, the talk about trusting feelings of love...
She just realized she found the inspiration she needed.
it hit her like a lightning bolt.
Playing in the clouds, the wind in her hair, the idea that sometimes love is just that simple.
"That's it..."She said as a smile formed on her face.
Taking out her guitar, she had begun to play her song as lyrics appeared in her head.
She began to sing, writing them down as she went and went more lyrics came to her. New melodies came, better then her original. The music just came to her
Strumming the guitar, she finished playing the song and smiled.
If she knew all it would take to get over her writers block was to relax, she would have done it weeks ago...and she has her father to thank.
"It's perfect..."She said aloud..."I just hope Drake likes it..."She thought.
Matlin leaned back thinking about the wonderful boy who had stolen her heart even without knowing it and all the many dates they could have in the future, only when she FINALLY works up the courage to tell him how she really feels.
"One day..."She thought.
One day, she was going to tell Drake how she felt, when the time was right and when that day comes, she hopes that he will return her feelings.
"Matlin, do you want a strawberry sundae?..."Her mother called... "I believe I just heard a certain someone finish playing her guitar, so I'm assuming you finished and a reward is needed!..."
The teenager giggled.
"Coming, Mom.."She said as she went down to spend time with her wonderful family and eat a wonderful sundae too.
All it all, it was another wonderful, MAGICAL day in the center of the Magical Dimension.

Jebest4781: Thank you for the suggestions, I will consider them.
Starlord Master: I am tied between Bloom and Musa.
DJ Rodriguez: Thank you :)
Luiz4200: She probably knows. As for Danny's kids, Matlin attends Alfea, a boarding school, so she lives in Magix for most of the year, while her parents and younger brother are stationed on Earth. Also, yes, they have plenty of human and non-human friends on Earth, such as Tucker's kids, Sam's kids and plenty others.
