Sleepover - The Second One
One day, the newsies decide that another sleepover is well on schedule.
Well, technically it was Medda who gave them the idea.
She told Jack that they were welcome to use the theater for a sleepover.
So Jack was like "ALRIGHT WE'RE COMING OVER TONIGHT!"
And that they did.
Albert wants revenge for the last sleepover, where no one let him get any sleep when he desperately needed it.
He is determined to make sure no one gets any sleep, and he has a master plan for later.
Today, he slept until 3 PM to make sure he would stay awake all night.
Jack is already at the theater when everyone starts showing up.
Mike is super duper late.
No one notices this.
They see Ike arrive and are all like "Cool, the twins are here now."
So no one knows that Mike is late, and they know the reason why even less.
What happened was that Ike stole Mike's bike, cycled to Central Park, left it there and took the bus home and told Mike.
Why?
For fun.
Medda gives the gang Just Dance to play when they arrive.
Since Crutchie can't play, he gets to vote who wins.
Shush, the game doesn't do that. Crutchie does.
Romeo is a freaking Just Dance master.
He gets a perfect score on every move.
Race is convince that he too is a Just Dance god.
He is not.
He just flails his limbs around.
Doesn't even do it on beat.
He also does the worm at one point, even though that was not what he was supposed to do.
"Creative initiative."
Sniper and Finch refuse to play, but later they sneak back and play.
Albert insists on playing "I'm Blue."
He loses spectacularly.
"I meant ta do that."
JoJo, Buttons, Henry and Elmer get bored of dancing and sneak down to the theater to write a play.
They write a beautiful love story.
A city girl and a farm boy meet.
They discover the farm boy plays the guitar and the city girl dances.
They put these talents together, and audition for the talent show at school, but the principal takes it down!
They do it anyway.
The EFQ make a cool audition poster, and put it on the door to Medda's apartment, where the others are hanging.
Then they wait for people to show up and audition.
Albert says, "No way I'm doin' that!"
Race says "Come on, Al!" once, and Albert's like "Alright, I'll do it, stop beggin'!"
Smalls tells Sniper that they should just go for it, without expecting much.
Sniper turns out to be an amazing actor.
He and Smalls get the lead.
I mean, the male lead was practically made for Snipes.
Albert's the mean principal, and he enjoys it a little too much.
Race plays a cow on the farm Smalls' character lives on.
Romeo tried to get the lead boy, but since Sniper got that, Romeo gets to play a rock that Smalls sits on.
He loves it.
"THIS IS MY BIG BREAK!"
The show doesn't have many lines, so they practice for an hour.
Then they put it on for the others.
They get a standing ovation for their outstanding performance.
After the show, Romeo appears with black tinted sunglasses (which no one knows where he got them from), and he gives out autographs.
After Romeo's given out all his autographs, they decide to watch some other shows, on the TV this time.
They don't want more than 10 minutes of any show, because someone always shouts "THIS IS BORING!"
They watch The Suite Life of Zack and Cody: "This is so stupid, turn it off"
Alexa and Katie: "This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, get it off the screen"
Stranger Things: "This is super inappropriate" - Davey
Outer Banks: "BORING!"
Next they turn on Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse for jokes sake, but then they get invested.
"IT'S DINNER TIME!"
"BUT- BUT I NEED TO KNOW HOW THIS ENDS!" Elmer shouts.
For dinner, they decide to order food.
The problem is, 20 people can't possibly agree on a place without anyone being disappointed.
The other problem is that the newsies have very different opinions, and they stand by them.
There is fighting.
Some people want Indian, others Chinese, some want KFC, McDonalds, and so on.
Davey, the only reasonable one, decides that they will have to draw lots.
Pizza Hut is the winner.
It's time for pizza orders!
Finch and Specs get Hawaiian pizzas.
Albert scolds them for comitting pizza crime by ordering pineapple.
Elmer gets mushrooms on his pizza.
Race orders every single topping on his pizza.
Davey won't let Les get his own full sized pizza.
Les is mad that he and Davey "have to" share a pizza.
He complains about the gluten free crust being dry and disgusting.
Tommy Boy lets Les have some of his pizza too.
Les also ends up eating leftover crust from those who don't like the crust.
This is mostly Finch, who despises the crust
Mush and Blink also decide to split a pizza between the two of them, because they can't go 24 hours without being a cute couple.
Sniper tells Smalls they should share one too.
"Fuck no, I need my own pizza."
She, and only she, will eat her kebab pizza.
Sniper instead ends up getting his own pizza with goat cheese and calamari.
Everyone is like "Uh, weird combo, but okay"
Crutchie and Jack share beacuse they're besties.
Albert is told by someone that "I'll be impressed if you eat an entire pizza."
This implies Albert can't eat a whole pizza.
So he orders an extra large one and eats it all.
Romeo shouts "I'S GONNA EAT A WHOLE PIZZA BY MYSELF TOO!"
He eats two slices and is super full.
Spots gets pepperoni just because it's red.
Kath gets a veggie pizza with lots of peppers.
She likes spicy stuff.
Jack insists on trying it, and spends two minutes drinking water to get rid of the spiciness.
The EFQ split two pizzas.
One deep dish pizza and one simple vezuvio.
Ike gets meat lovers.
Mike shows up in the middle of the pizza eating.
He has to share with everyone who is willing to give him a slice.
The pizzas arrive, and there's meat in the deep dish pizza, so vegetarian Elmer can't have any.
They decide to watch more Barbie, but this time a movie.
They watch The Diamond Castle.
Finch and Tommy Boy are against it.
Albert ridicules every single thing that happens.
Buttons becomes a massive Barbie fan, but refuses to admit it.
He gets WAY too into it.
He read Barbie fanfiction later.
Smalls and Crutchie were big Barbie fans when they were kids.
They remember the songs from The Diamond Castle from their childhood and sing along to them, very dramatically.
Smalls abandons Sniper so she and Crutchie can act out the songs in another couch.
After the movie, people wanna play with the Ouija board.
Others wanna play Light As a Feather, Stiff As a Board.
Others are like "Hell no, normal board games."
The Ouija board gang is: JoJo, Buttons, Henry, Elmer, Tommy Boy, Finch, Sniper, the twins and Spot.
Elmer is scared of the board.
The Feather and Board gang is: Mush, Blink, Jack, Crutchie, Race and Albert.
Mush is convinced his sister's friend successfully did it once.
Finally, Specs, Romeo, Davey and Les play normal boardgames.
Smalls moves between all the groups.
In the LAAFSAAB group, Race sacrifices himself to be in the middle.
Jack gets to chant.
Race won't stop excitedly squiggling.
The ritual doesn't work.
Mush insists they're doing something wrong.
"MY SISTER'S FRIENDS DID IT ONCE"
Race is not giving up.
He gets lost in a Youtube spiral trying to figure out how to make himself float.
In the Ouija board group, Spot's spooking everyone by moving the glass but saying nothing about it.
The others now think there's a ghost in the theater.
For the rest of the night, any small noise has them all like "It's the ghost..."
JoJo tries to befriend the ghost.
Smalls joins the Ouija group.
Spot tells her he's moving the glass.
Smalls is now in on the joke.
They come up with Operation Make These Guys Believe the Theater is Actually Haunted.
Les is salty about having to play board games.
He doesn't want to.
He wants to play with the Ouija board.
When Smalls is with that group, she helps him cheat.
When they're playing Scrabble, Davey is Mr. Rulebook.
"Technically, you can't place that there because it inteferes with this one here."
"Technically, shut up, Davey."
The Best Stupid Boys (aka Sniper, Finch and Tommy Boy) join the board game group for Twister.
They play against each other while Smalls spins the thing.
Sniper gets to go first, Tommy Boy second, and Finch last so Smalls can make his life hard.
It's an intense games.
The boys twist and turn further than they thought they could.
Especially Finch.
Finally, Tommy Boy is in a very complicated position when Smalls tells him to put his left hand on green.
He ends up falling over, and being eliminated.
When it's only Finch and Sniper left, they get even more competetive.
Then Finch is forced into a position where his foot has to support basically his entire body weight.
While his body weight isn't much, it's too much for one foot.
He is too tired, and gives up.
Sniper is victorious.
JoJo then dominates an EFQ battle, and Smalls wins a PST one.
Now people are getting sleepy.
It's like 1 AM.
They start unpacking their sleeping bags.
Jack insists that they all sleep on the theater stage.
Romeo agrees.
His fantastic performance in the show inspired him.
The couples all huddle together with their sleeping bags.
While everyone gets their sleeping bags ready, Albert "goes to the bathroom."
Really he goes to meet his brothers outside the theater.
It's master plan time.
"George. Theodore. Remeber the last time I cried?" -Albert
"Yeah, wasn't that when you were ten and dad took away your stuffed dog-" -Theodore
"Shut up, you don't remember anything." - Albert
"Okay..." -George
"Because I don't do that shit. But also, some time ago we had a sleepover. I got no sleep, and the others almost made me cry - STOP LAUGHING - it's revenge time."
They play with the fact that some people think the theater is haunted.
When everyone's finishing up their sleeping bags, they hear a loud sound like something heavy is being pulled across the floor on the other side of a door.
When they check outside, a large theater prop is outside.
They can see no one.
It was George though. But they don't know that.
They move the prop back and close the door.
Three minutes later, the same thing happens again.
Romeo thinks the ghosts are trying to tell them something about this specific prop, and he thinks it might be related to his role in the play.
Everyone else just agrees that "Yeah, this place is haunted af"
Even those who know Spot moved the glass now think it's haunted.
JoJo still wants to befriend the ghost.
They walk outside like "HERE I AM, BEFRIEND ME!"
Meanwhile Albert's brothers just walk around being ghosts basically.
Smalls wants to perform an exorcism, because she wanted to sleep.
Crutchie is quietly dying inside.
Then suddenly, Theodore pops out with a sheet over himself right in front of Crutchie.
Crutchie takes his crutch and goes WHACK!
Theodore is on the floor.
Crutchie's like "I DEFEATED THE GHOST!"
Everyone else is like "The fuck, why does the ghost have legs?"
Theodore, along with Albert's plan, is busted.
Crutchie sits on him as he vows to never return.
Everyone is too caught up in the "haunting" of the theater to go to sleep now.
So they decide to watch more Barbie movies, much to Finch's displeasure.
This time they watch Swan Lake.
Crutchie was the one who decided this, and no one dared protest, because after all, he did just beat up a ghost.
They're having a nice time watching the movie.
Well... some of them are.
Finch hates it.
Sniper quickly gets bored.
Then a very slow and boring scene comes on, and he reaches the peak of boredom.
He grabs his phone and turns the volume up to the maximum possible level.
Then, right as everyone is quiet, and the movie is at it's calmest point, he turns on a loud Van Halen song.
Everyone is super spooked.
They're also mad at him.
He just sits there like "hehehehehe"
Spot cries when the otter dies in the movie.
Race, Jack and Smalls laugh.
Spot tells them "I have ALLERGIES!"
"Ta what?" he's asked.
"I dunno... dust?" is his answer.
"As someone who actually is allergic to dust, I can say that there ain't that much dust in here, or my eyes would be waterin' like hell." Sniper debunks Spot's answer.
"Then it's like some moisturizer or otha' skincare product," Spot then says.
"I didn't know ya were inta skin care, Spotty!" Albert says.
Spot throws a pillow at him.
Romeo also cries, and Specs is there like -_-
Race makes stupid comments the entire time, and people get annoyed.
Specs then takes off his glasses for three seconds to rub his itchy eye.
Now they're gone.
Race stole them.
He passes them to Albert, who passes them to Smalls, who passes them on and on and on.
They travel across the room, where JoJo puts them on.
Since specs can't see, Romeo is like "Don't worry, I gotchu bro, I will describe in vivid detail what's happenin' in da movie."
Vivid detail = "Oh, they're dancin' again - PRETTY SPIN - oooh the music is nice."
Henry points out that the skirt is defying the laws of physics.
Meanwhile, Specs who can't see can't see whether the fakr birds in the theater are real or not.
He is not in the right state of mind to be like "Of course there wouldn't be birds in here."
He freaks out
Jack is slowly losing the will to live.
Medda is seriously considering kicking them out.
She needs her sleep.
Now do you remember that Albert's brothers stopped haunting them because Theodore was busted?
Well, the thing is, both of them didn't leave.
Only Theodore left.
George is still lurking around.
He gets onto a balcony, and throws one of the fake birds at Specs.
Specs screams for three minutes.
The newsies didn't see who did it, so they blame each other.
They finally settle on that it was Ike, even though he's literally right behind Specs and couldn't possibly have done it.
Crutchie has completely tuned out of the chaos.
He is one with the movie, and hasn't been paying attention to anything but it.
When the movie is over, Medda is like "Alright, are youse gonna sleep or am I gonna have to kick you out?"
So now for 20 teens to sleep on one stage without disturbances.
Nothing can go wrong, right?
Wrong.
Things go wrong immediately.
Smalls can't stop giggling.
She's just laughing for no reason.
People are like "shut the fuck up" but that just makes her laugh harder.
The giggles turn into chuckles and the chuckles that turn into laughter that turn into hysterics.
Finch tried to put on some calming music to calm her the fork down.
He quickly had to turn it off after being disowned by everyone else.
There is no stopping Smalls.
So Jack picks her up and carries her to a private theater box.
She is still laughing.
Now laughing at the others from the theater box.
Elmer says she's possessed.
And now for another episode of What's Happening to Specs' Glasses!
Romeo accidentally sits on them and they break.
Specs is pissed.
Romeo is sad because Specs is pissed at him.
And now back to Smalls!
Elmer's still insisting she's possessed.
Albert starts making "ghost noises."
And then comes the return of George.
Except no one thinks it's George, because everyone thought he left with Theodore.
Even Albert thinks so.
George starts turning the lights on and off.
Now everyone thinks it's haunted.
Except for Davey, who's like "sOmEtHiNg'S wRoNg WiTh ThE eLeCtRiCiTy CiRcUiT"
JoJo throws the Ouija board across the room like "BEGONE THOT!" thinking that will make the ghost go away.
Elmer's sitting in the middle of the stage, his hand full of sweets, going "DO YOU WANT LEMON SWEETS?" over and over again.
Blink gets tired of it.
"I DON'T THINK HE WANTS FUCKIN' LEMON SWEETS!"
Buttons takes a sweet and Elmer is M A D.
"Are you da ghost, Buttons? No. Ya ain't. THESE AIN'T FOR YOU!"
Mike and Ike decide it's funny to try and steal as many lemon sweets as they can.
Elmer thinks the ghost took them and is happy again.
Davey accidentally sees George "haunting them" but he's too tired to care at this point.
Sniper sneaks up to Smalls in the private box, because just because.
Why not
No one saw this though.
Tommy Boy's like "Wait where's Sniper?"
Race immediately jumps to the conclusion that "THE GHOSTS TOOK HIM!"
Sniper rolls with it, and hides in the box.
Chaos ensues.
Everyone is yelling and screaming.
Smalls has been laughing throughout this whole ordeal.
Then finally, Medda comes in and politely kicks them out.
They were making too much noise and she got several complaints from people around the theater.
So now for the 20 newsies to walk through New York in their pajamas to go to the Lodging House instead.
Specs is the only one who brought a key.
But since he has no glasses, he can't find them.
"Specs, hurry up, we's freezin'!"
"Well, if ya hadn't stOLEN MY GLASSES, WE'D BE INSIDE BY NOW!"
"ROMEO BROKE 'EM, DON'T BLAME US!" Albert shouts.
"ONE A' YOUSE STOLE 'EM FIRST THOUGH!" Romeo retaliates.
Then Mike is suddenly like: "Everyone. Move."
He walks up to the door, and picks the lock like it was nothing.
Davey is slightly concerned.
No one else is.
Mike says that everyone has to buy him Coke now, or he'll get back on them.
Specs walks inside and passes out on the couch within three seconds.
Albert sits on his face to wake him up.
Specs is disgusted and just wants to sleep.
"It's only... *checks clock* 3:30 AM, why woulja sleep?"
Race agrees that "If ya wanted ta sleep, ya shoulda' stayed at da theater."
There is a silent moment where Specs is just breathing trying not to go crazy at these people.
Then suddenly, someone shotus "EVERYONE AGAINST SPECS!"
Specs is tackled to the ground.
On the floor of the Lodging House living room is a pile of boys, wrestling against the one at the bottom.
Smalls neatly places herself on top of the pile.
Everyone gets tired very quickly.
They kinda find themselves comfortable like this.
They slowly spread out into less of a pile, and more of a mess of people on the floor.
Like this, they fall asleep.
Next morning, everyone wakes up with an arm or a leg in their face.
But hey, that's just the life of being a newsie.
Daaaamn. Long chapter.
