Chapter 12: Can't catch a break…
Archer gripped the handle of the blade, he narrowed his eyes as he studied its edge. Running his finger along it to the point.
'Sharp.' He thought to himself, the twirled the blade in his hand until it was in a secure grip. Years of practice taking over as his movements became fluid. The blade glided through the air and towards its target.
Archer allowed himself a small smirk as he made effortless work of his foe, 'All too easy…' he mentally chuckled, his ears began to pick of the sound of footsteps behind him. He narrowed his eyes.
They were early and were closing in. He smirked. They were already far to late to stop him.
The footsteps came to a stop just at the entrance of the kitchen. Archer turned to greet his would be ambushers. The smirk never left his face as Shirou and Sella gaped at him in surprise.
"You…" Sella's eyes were wide as she took in the sight of Archer in an apron with a kitchen knife in his hands, breakfast already nearing its completion at his hands.
"Indeed." Archer replied "I feel as though my Master has gone without a proper breakfast for far too long." he turned away from the pair "As such I consider it my responsibility to see to her nutritional needs." he sent a glance their way "Now leave. The kitchen is no place for clumsy fools."
"C-clumsy!?" Sella barked at him and blushed bright red with anger "Y-you!?"
"Oh?" Archer turned to her with a face of complete innocence "I wasn't referring to you." his eyes drifted over to the scowling Shirou "Breakfast is nearly ready boy. Perhaps you should seat yourself down at the table while I finish."
Shirou clicked his tongue and walked away, Sella looked between the two in bewilderment only for Archer to speak again "You should probably join him...besides I've seen the western style foods you make." he frowned at her "I had thought your role as her guardian would mean you were knowledgeable about a healthy diet." he narrowed his eyes at her "Perhaps I overestimated you…" he turned away and back cooking.
Sella felt her eyes widen in shock before she scowled and marched out of the kitchen and into the dining room, sitting herself down and crossing her arms in a huff opposite Shirou. Their faces showing equal amounts of frustration at Archer claiming the kitchen.
"I smell Shirou-chan's cooking!" Irisviels voice echoed through the house, Archer winced at that. Despite the fact that this iteration of his past self had no interest in being a Hero. That didn't mean he wanted to be referred to by his old name.
"Shirou-cha…" The woman came to a stop when she saw both Shirou and Sella sitting at the kitchen table with matching scowls on their faces, both directed to the sole person in the kitchen, currently finishing off breakfast "Ara?" Irisviel blinked and tilted her head in confusion, then looked to where the pair were shooting their glares. She blinked again at the sight of Archer in an apron.
"Ara?" A wide grin then threatened to split her face "Archer-chan's cooking!" the servant sent her a slightly raised eyebrow while she continued to bounce on her heels with a wide grin.
The woman practically flung herself into her chair as she sat with her hands on her chin, staring at Archer with an obvious look of impatience as she waited for her food, both Sella and Shirou sent her slightly betrayed looks that she was so accepting of the kitchen being stolen from them without even any words of reprimand.
Kiritsugu, Illya and Leysritt swiftly arrived soon after, Illya and Leysritt seating themselves down at the table while Kiritsugu joined Archer in the kitchen.
"Archer." Kiritsugu began, a blank look on his face, Archer gave him a passing glance before returning to his work.
"Kiritsugu." He grunted in reply "Can I help you with something?"
"Irisviel has agreed to train Illya in the Einzbern craft." Archer nodded his head as he tasted the food. Frowning slightly then adding a small pinch of salt.
"A wise strategy." Archer said after a moment "I assume you require my insight for something?"
"Shirou's…" Kiritsugu began "I was hoping you would provide me with some basic knowledge so I could structure his training." Archer raised a single eyebrow, not looking at Kiritsugu, before closing his eyes and letting out a small sigh.
"Both his Element and Origin are Sword." Archer said after a few moments, Kiritsugu sent him a puzzled look "Yes. Rather unorthodox, you'll find him quite useless at all other forms of Magecraft." he tapped the spoon off the side of the pan and placed it by the sink "As far as other craft goes. He'll be exceedingly capable of structural analysis, reinforcement, alteration and projection. He will be able to read the history of any bladed weapon and recreate it…" he sent a small glance over to Shirou, who was still shooting him a dirty look, before he turned back to Kiritsugu and his eyes hardened "That in itself is unusual but not noteworthy...however the real problem is his true nature."
Kiritsugu tensed, catching the serious nature of Archer's tone "Which is?"
"A reality Marble." Kiritsugu widened his eyes and made sure not to stumble in surprise "He has no limit to what he can project. They are all stored there, ready to be accessed. Anything, save divine constructs, provided he can understand the components is placed there."
"He'd receive a sealing designation…" Kiritsugu whispered, more to himself than Archer, the servant nodded his head.
"Indeed. Which is why I suggest you train him in your own craft...it would be more expected of the son of the 'Magus Killer' to rely on more modern means than his own natural talents." Kiritsugu frowned and looked away for a moment.
"I...I didn't want them involved in the first place." His voice was barely above a whisper, Archer was somewhat surprised to hear a tone of worry in his voice, however he quickly steeled himself.
"That is no longer possible." Archer sighed "He'll likely have the attention of the heirs to the Tohsaka and the Edelfelt families. Combine with Illya's little escapade, even without my arrival he'd still be dragged into the moonlit world."
Kiritsugu released a sigh "What of his natural craft?"
Archer remained silent for a few moments "I'll...teach him the basics...it'll at least stop the idiot doing something as stupid as turning his nerves into circuits."
Kiritsugu released a small chuckle "I doubt we need to worry about that, even the most novice magus wouldn't be as suicidal as to do something as stupid as that."
"…" Archer remained silent for a few moments as he began plating breakfast "You'd think so, wouldn't you?" he muttered under his breath, Kiritsugu send him a confused look before shrugging his shoulders.
"Hurry up Archer-chan!" Irisviel whined from the table "I'm starving here!"
"With the amount I've seen you eat, I suspect you are in very little danger of malnutrition." Archer shot back instantly. The cringed slightly when Irisviel went strangely silent and Kiritsugu shot him a look of condolence.
"Archer…" Irisviel's voice was dangerously low, Archer chanced a quick look her way and almost blinked as he could see a dark cloud manifesting itself over her head.
"Breakfast." He called out and swiftly delivered the plates through to the table, sliding Irisviel's in front of her. The cloud rescinded, yet she still shot Archer a glare.
"So...Archer." Irisviel dropped the 'chan' which he found to be...slightly disconcerting "What have you made to feed my gluttonous person."
"Stuffed omelet." He replied, Irisviel blinked.
"Eh?" She held a look of surprise "That's...that's a western dish."
"Yes." Archer nodded as he placed the other plates in front of the others "Is there some sort of prejudice I'm not aware of?"
"N-no!" Irisviel held up her hands "It's just…" she looked at Shirou and Sella, who looked like they wanted to incinerate the omelets with their eyes. "Only Sella knows how to make Western foods...Shirou can't do it all that well."
Archer looked over at Shirou, then back at Irisviel and smirked "In that case it is a good thing I am here to free you of their ignorance."
"Jerk." Shirou muttered under his breath.
"Oh, oh!" Irisviel chirped "Can I do it this time?" everyone sent her a confused expression, until she clapped her hands together "Itadakimasu!" then picked up her knife and fork and immediately began eating her breakfast.
The others swiftly joined her in eating. Archer's face remained blank as Irisviel virtually scoffed down the entire plate within a few minutes before grinning "Archer-chan's cooking is the best!" she chriped.
Shirou and Sella said nothing, save give slight frowns before they each replied with an 'Its alright, I guess.' Illya simply saying how tasty it was while Kiritsugu and Leysritt remained silent as they ate.
"Illya." Irisviel caught the attention of their youngest child "You're going to be spending some of your free time learning magic with your talented mother." Illya blinked in surprise, then gave a, somewhat strained, smile in response.
"O-okay." She said after a moment, Shirou looked between Irisviel and Kiritsugu before he swallowed his latest mouthful then spoke.
"What about me?"
"Myself and this geezer-" Archer sent a tilt of his head towards Kiritsugu, the man simply frowned and mouthed 'geezer' to himself "Will be teaching you. I'll deal with our...inherent magecraft with he will teach you the more practical side of things."
Shirou nodded after a few moments, then sent Archer a curious look "What are you going to be doing while myself and Illya are at school?" he then gave a very Archer like smirk "Lazing about like Liz?" the homunculus in question gave an uncaring shrug at being called out.
"I already took care of that!" Irisviel chimed in "I still have a few friends." she gave Archer a mischievous grin "Don't worry Shirou...he'll be close at hand." she her eyes never lost their glint as both Archer and Shirou narrowed their vision on the woman.
""How close?"" They said at the same time.
"Which is why with Mrs Fujimura becoming a full time Elementary teacher, we've decided to hire our new English Teacher." The principle delivered the news with a smile on his face, a completely opposite expression to the man behind him "I realise this is a rather sudden shift, a new guidance councillor and new school nurse, but I trust that you will all welcome Mr Emiya with the same respect that he is due." he turned to the side and allowed the tanned man with white hair to step up to the podium, his frown never leaving his face and seemingly intensifying as he stepped in front of the entire school.
"Good Morning." Archer began, the children still staring at him with rapt attention "I am Mr Emiya Yumio"- he cringed at the name "-and I look forward to taking an active role in your learning. That is all." he stepped back, the principal beginning to clap loudly which was swiftly followed by the assembled students.
"Now then." The principle began "With that out of the way, I hope we all enjoyed our break and are ready for a new term. Please head out for classes."
Archer sighed, then made for the door before a voice caught his attention "Weeellll!" Archer internally sighed and externally winced, he knew that voice "Hello there, My Bow!" he slowly turned around and masked his features.
"Fujimura-Sensei." He nodded his head "To what do I owe the...pleasure?" the woman stared at him then giggled, he could almost see a feint hint of red on her cheeks.
"Wanted to meet the man who was going to take over my old role!" She grinned at him "Heard rumours you were a foreigner...but…" she leaned in and studied Archers face, before nodding to herself "Nope...just a really good tan."
Archer nodded his head at her "I see...was there anything else?"
"Nope." She made sure to pop the 'P' "But if your ever in trouble don't be afraid to visit your Senpai for advice!" she marched past him before sending one last glance over her shoulder at him then running off. Archer stared at her as she disappeared then sighed.
How hard could teaching actually be?
"Sensei! Are you related to Illya!?"
"Sensei, why is your skin tanned?"
"Sensei can I go to the bathroom?"
Archer sat at his desk, face in his hands as the children continued to hurl questions his way. Evidently it was harder than he suspected to teacher children, not for lack of knowledge, simply the reason that they kept asking questions...or rather one of them kept asking questions.
"Tatsuko!" The tall girl with glasses hissed at the small blonde haired child "Stop talking!"
"Eh?" Tatsuko turned to her friend "What's wrong Suzuka?
"Gakumazawa-san." Archer spoke in a dead tone, the class froze and their heads all turned onto the tanned man as he lifted his face out of his palms and stared the blonde haired girl in the eyes. "Do you have any class relevant questions?"
"N-no...Sensei…" She said after a few moments and seemingly sank into her seat under the gaze of Archer.
"In that case." He stood up and turned to the bored "We'll start with something simple. We'll be learning common English phrases and then from there we'll move onto their grammar." he turned back to the class "Any questions?"
"No, Sensei." Archer nodded his head once.
"Good." He began writing on the board, then his reinforced hearing picked up a slight whisper.
"Who thought it was a good idea to have grumpy teach kids?" Archer snapped the chalk in his hands. The class descended into silence.
"Illyasviel." He didn't turn around as he spoke, he got an extremely nervous affirmative from the girl "Please stay behind after class."
"Y-yes, Ar-Sensei…" Archer pinched the bridge of his nose, now he looked like he was making children cry.
"Now then…"
Class passed relatively smoothly after that, Archer found it somewhat simple to teach the children basic English phrases. Except Gakumazawa Tatsuko, Archer found her to somewhat stereotypical when it came to young children. Easily distracted and asking incessant questions all the time.
He scowled, this entire situation was a joke of the highest order, how was he to know that Irisviel still had connections which had been the Einzberns, and that she would use those to give him a teaching position.
"Illyasviel." Archer's curt tone caused her to flinch slightly, the class having long since left for break when the bell went "Do you know why I asked you to stay behind?"
"B-because your proud of your little Sister doing well in English?" She gave him a wide smile, which wilted when Archer's face didn't change in the least.
"Illyasviel." She flinched again "Why is she here?"
"Who?" She gave a nervous chuckle and scratched the back of her head while failing to whistle.
"Kaleidostick trash." Illya winced and Ruby abruptly burst from her pocket and flew into Archer's face.
"OI!" Ruby exclaimed at him in indignation "I'll have you know I am a mystic code of the highest order!"
"Which is why you should be anywhere but here."
"There was never an issue before." Ruby huffed, Archer raised an eyebrow at her.
"That was before everyone in her family knew about you. Back then she couldn't exactly leave you lying around the house for anyone to find." He explained as he shuffled papers on his desk "Now that they are aware, you may remain at her home." he looked up at Ruby "And out of sight of anyone unaffiliated with the moonlit world."
"Well, Sapphire is allowed to come here!" Ruby fired back, Archer remained unperturbed.
"Sapphire is far more mature than you are, and is self aware enough to know to keep quiet when out of the house and in public." he shrugged "I also have control over what Mrs Edelfelt does with her ward's mystic code."
"You just hate me, don't you!?"
"That is a large factor in my decision, yes." he sighed "It is also from a more pragmatic position, in that it makes sense for you to not be here. I am more than capable of protecting Illya, without your being here."
"Lets go, Illya!" Ruby floated back to the pale girl "We don't want to miss break!"
"I trust you'll give my suggestion some thought, Ms Einzbern." Archer spoke to the small girl, who made her way to the door "Oh, and one more thing." Illya turned to face Archer with a raised eyebrow and a tilt of her head.
Archer smirked at her "You're doing very well in English right now." Illya beamed at him then ran out of the room. Archer sighed and shook his head.
What had he let himself in for this time?
"What do you think you're doing here, Archer!?" Rin exclaimed as she burst into the classroom, Luvia trailing behind her with a similar look of shock.
"My, my...what an undignified entry…" Archer shook his head in faux surprise "And from the 'Idol' of the school as well? If the other students could see you now, Ms Tohsaka." Archer smirked as her face turned red, Luvia meanwhile put on a smug look and strut past her.
"As my inelegant monkey associate was getting at, Sir." Luvia began "We are merely curious as to why you are still here, given what we believed were your plans for after the class cards were collected."
Archer sighed "There were...complications that arose." he dropped the fake smile and assumed a more exasperated tone "Suffice to say, I shall be around school for the foreseeable future."
Rin and Luvia scowled slightly before letting out a sigh "I see…" Archer gave them an intrigued look.
"It is my understanding that something similar has occurred with the pair of you? Illya mentioned something to do with the leylines."
"Right…" Rin nodded her head "Its been a few weeks since we cleared up that class card fiasco...but the Ley Lines haven't begun restoring themselves yet."
Archer frowned "Some sort of interference induced by the cards?" the pair nodded at him "I suppose it explains why you haven't arrived to claim Ruby back from Illya yet."
"We need them to aid in healing the ley lines." Luvia interjected "Until that's done, we're going to have to continue enlisting their help."
Archer nodded his head "When were you going to start?"
"Today, after school." Archer sighed.
"I won't be there, I'm...required back at the house." At Luvia and Rin's puzzled expressions he held up his hand "Its best you don't ask...suffice to say I probably wouldn't be of much use to you in these type of things anyway."
"I suppose…" Rin nodded her head, then grumbled under her breath "First we get that fake councillor, now we have a Heroic Spirit teaching english." Archer frowned at that first part, for some reason that sentence was sending alarm bells through his head.
He put it down to paranoia and shook his head "If you excuse me, I've got a class to prepare for." the girls nodded and left. Archer sighed and returned to his work.
"Hellooo! There, Mr Bow!" And promptly grumbled under his breath as Taiga burst into the classroom with a wide grin on her face "Your Senpai was gracious enough to stop by and see how her kouhai was doing!"
"I believe I am older than you, Fujimura-sensei." He replied back, getting a boisterous laugh from the woman.
"Oh, you flirt!" She slide in front of his desk "Is that your way of complimenting my youthful visage, Mr Bow?"
"Fujimura-sensei-"
"Call me Taiga!" She grinned at him as she slammed her hands on his desk "We're colleagues now!"
"...Fujimura-sensei." He leaned back in his chair and looked up at the woman "While I am...grateful, you have taken an interest in helping your newest colleague. I regret to inform you that it is somewhat unneeded furthermor-"
"You're having problems with Tatsuko-chan, aren't you?" Archer stumbled midsentence and shot the woman a weird look before sighing.
"I wouldn't refer to her as a problem." He replied "She is simply-"
"Crazy."
"...Excitable."
"I could give you some tips on how to manage her?" Tagia asked with a wry grin, Archer stared at her for a few moments before he let out a sigh.
"I suppose I would not be adverse to advice from a colleague."
"There you go, Mr Bow! Just call me Taiga-senpai!" Her grin got larger "Hey that rhymes!"
"Why do you insist on calling me Mr Bow?" Taiga blinked and raised a curious eyebrow at Archer.
"Because your name is Yumio...Yumi means bow...so Mr Bow...or do you prefer Bow-Sensei…" she leaned in slightly "Or Bow-chan?"
Archer cringed and pinched the bridge of his nose "I prefer Emiya-Sensei…"
"But then I feel like I'm talking to Shirou!" Archer didn't dignify that with a response. Taiga stared at him for a few moments then pouted and looked to the side "Fine, Bow-Sensei it is."
"Just…" Archer released a breath "Just get to the advice."
Taiga's grin became positively catlike.
"So, Archer-chan!" Irisviel beamed at him the moment he set foot into the house "How was school!"
"You used your connections to place a dangerously underqualified individual in a position to teach impressionable young minds." Archer scowled at her "I expected better from you."
"But Archer-chan…" Irisviel's smile never vanished "You're fluent in English, aren't you?" it was a rhetorical question. They both knew she had him.
"Illyasviel won't be home." He decided to change the subject "Tohsaka and Edelfelt have absconded with her to aid with an ongoing issue regarding the ley lines."
"Is it serious?" Irisviel lost her smile and her tone became far more serious than it had been moments ago. Archer shook his head at her.
"Simple maintenance of the Ley lines." He shrugged "I doubt it will be of great concern, or detriment to her health."
Irisviel stared at him a moment longer before she sighed "I suppose so." she then brightened "Shirou-chan got home early, he's with Kiritsugu right now." Archer nodded his head.
"In that case, if I'm not needed…" he went to return to spirit form before Irisviel grasped his hand, the Servant gave her an inquisitve look while Irisviel shifted slightly.
"I...I was hoping that we could talk...or do something, it doesn't matter what…" Archer stared at her then shook his head.
"You're taking on too much." He replied to her "You don't need to go out of your way to accommodate to me." Irisviel frowned and shook her head.
"Archer." Irisviel furrowed her brows at him "I want time with you as a person. Not Shirou...can't I at least get to know my other child?" Archer stared into her eyes before he looked away.
"There's not much to know…" Irisviel beamed.
"Then they'll be plenty for me to instil into you!" Archer sighed, he doubted his other self was dealing with something as troublesome as this.
"To be a Magus is to walk the path of death." Kiritsugu said in a grave tone while looking Shirou in the eye "If you wish to learn magecraft, then you will need to engrave this saying onto your very being."
Shirou gulped and nodded along, Kiritsugu stared at him for a few more moments before nodding as well "First thing is first...my profession is…" Kiritsugu winced slightly before continuing "I deal with Magi who have...become a danger to the rest of the world."
Shirou furrowed his brows and frowned "Like a bounty hunter?" Kiritsugu nodded at him.
"Something like that…" He muttered "Regardless, I will be taking care of your training for combat situations, while Archer will focus on honing your own personal craft." Shirou didn't notice the scowl forming on his face "He has alerted me that you are a specialist when it comes to Magecraft, as such I will teach you my own ways which aren't as reliant on magecraft."
Shirou nodded "First question." Kiritsugu began "What do you suppose is a Magi's greatest weakness?" Shirou frowned at that, remaining silent as he went through different answers in his head before he shrugged at Kiritsugu.
"I...I don't know…" He muttered under his breath, feeling slightly embarrassed at his own lack of an answer.
"The answer is 'it varies'." Shirou shot him a look of confusion "As a general rule of thumb, most magi will be arrogant and have an aversion to modern technology." he frowned "However, never assume that the same applies to all magi. Some will be more accepting of it, like myself, however those are few and far between." he walked around to where Shirou was and placed a small suitcase in front of him "In here are listening devices and cameras." Shirou looked at him in confusion "You are going to place these around the house until such a time that I no longer discover them." Kiritsugu stepped back "This will be your first lesson in dealing with Magi. While most rely on familiars, that doesn't mean they aren't prepared for more mundane means. The moment I have to put in effort to locate your listening devices, will be the moment you move onto your second lesson."
Shirou nodded his head, Kiritsugu nodded back "We'll also be talking to some of my old contacts to help with your training…I believe you remember Aunt Maiya?"
"W-wait…" Shirou blinked at him "Is she some kind of super spy too!?"
"...Something like that." Was Kiritsugu cryptic answer, he looked at his watch then back at Shirou "You've got an hour to set up your devices. You'd better get going." Shirou scrambled out of his seat, grabbed the suitcase and ran out of the room.
Kiritsugu released a sigh before humming "I wonder is Leysritt can teach him hand to hand combat…" he muttered to himself.
Archer placed the Tea in front of Irisviel, the woman sniffed it before smiling "Ooooh! This is my favourite, how did you know?"
Archer's face remained blank as he sat down with his own cup "I...I believe is was Illya's as well." Irisviel's smile got sadder and they fell into an awkward silence.
"Archer…"
"No...that's my fault." He waved her off "I don't suppose you have anything you want to talk about?"
"I...I was hoping you would…" Irisviel awkwardly scratched the side of her head and let out an awkward chuckle.
Archer gave her an unimpressed look before sighing "Typical...the boy…" he said after a moment "How did you come to adopt him?"
"Shirou?" Irisviel blinked, then smiled "It was on one of Kiritsugu trips...apparently his apartment complex got caught up in a mystic code experiment gone wrong by a rogue magus...Kiritsugu blamed himself for being too slow and spent hours helping rescue crews clear away the debris looking for survivors." she took a sip of her tea while Archer remained silent "Eventually...he found little Shirou...took him to the hospital and discovered later that the accident had given him amnesia...all he could remember was his name...He called me and asked if I wanted another child…"
"I imagine it was a brief negotiation." Archer remarked, Irisviel released a small giggle at him then nodded her head.
"Oh yes...Ever since I laid my eyes on little Shirou...he's been a part of our family as much as Illya has been." Archer nodded his head and took a sip of his tea.
"Well...That's good for him…" He said after a few moments "He's...he's certainly better than I was when I was his age…" Irisviel gave him a sad smile.
"I'm sorry…"
"Hm?" Archer turned to her with a raised eyebrow "There's nothing to apologise for. If anything I should be thanking you both...I suppose if you weren't so greedy as to value your daughter...then you wouldn't have all this…" he gestured to the house "And the boy…" he sighed "The boy would be certainly more foolish…"
"He is quite dense sometimes." Irisviel nodded her head "I don't see why he doesn't recognise that those girls like him."
"That wasn't quite what I mean-"
"I just want some grandkids!" She whined "Is that too much to ask!?" she turned to him with a desperate expression "Don't you think he should be more out there and having relationships with girls?"
"What are you-"
"I mean, he's a young boy! How can he be so dense!?"
"Irisviel-"
"He's killing me!" She flopped onto the table "I just want some little babies to spoil…"
Archer looked up and saw Kiritsugu walk behind Irisviel, the two shared a look which conveyed only a single sentence to Archer.
'You're on your own.'
Archer muttered a silent curse before turning back to Irisviel "I...I'm sure he'll get there eventually…"
"By the way!" Irisviel perked up immediately "Have you met any nice colleagues...of the say...female variety?"
'Mr Bow!'
"Nope." He answered immediately "None that I would consider of good relationship material…"
"Hmmmmm…." Irisviel leaned in, her eyes squinting as she hummed at Archer "Hmmmmmm…."
"What are yo-"
"Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….." She nodded after a few moments "I see…"
"I don't think you d-"
"Archer!" Illya burst into the room, a panicked look on her face, Archer merely raised a brow at her.
"Is something wrong Master?"
"I'll say!" Rin snarled as she stormed into the room "Your class card just manifested a clone of Illya!"
"...What?"
"You know what this means…" Irisviel began gravely, looking over everyone in the room. They all began to shrink back under the intensity of her gaze "I get more children!"
Archer sighed and Illya sweatdropped.
