I do not own Harry Potter, only the OC
Hello guys, Badger here once again. This chapter was quick and easy to write, and I saw no reason to hold off on posting, so I thought why not treat you guys to another one. Now, with the previous chapter, Hollowsent gave me their theory on the cloaked man being James' sister and I'm just going to say: that is way off, considering she's well...dead. Read chapters 31 and 32 if you haven't already, they are important to James' character. Anyway, I would love to see your theories on who you believe the cloaked man to be.
Side note: I also did something that I probably should have done a long time ago. Update the first chapter so its the same format for the rest of them.
That is all for now, read on and I will see you at the end.
Chapter 43
The Three Unforgivables
A cloaked figure stood on a cliffside, ignoring the chill of the midnight breeze, overlooking the gorgeous view, that was Hogwarts Castle. A place he once called home. Now the boy resided there. He may have been unimportant to The Dark Lord, but he was anything but, at least to himself. The boy is strong. He saw proof of this himself, at the Quidditch World Cup. He could do so much more with such power and yet, he chose to fight we those dogs? Disappointing. The Light had always left a disgusting taste in his mouth. After several more moments, his eyes overlooking the castle, the man turned and left. He will reveal himself to the boy in time. For now, plans needed to be made.
…
Harry sat with James in the Defence Classroom, whilst Daphne sat with Susan on the neighbouring desk. There were small murmurs across the classroom, as they waited for Alastor Moody to appear.
"How good of a Professor do you think he will be?" Harry asked
"With someone of his reputation, I imagine he will be brilliant" James replied, seemingly buzzing with excitement
Harry couldn't help but watch in amusement at James' childlike excitement. It wasn't often he saw James like this, but was always welcome when it did. The door to the classroom swung open, banging against the doorframe. Everyone turned to see Moody limping his way to the front of the classroom, using his large wooden staff-like cane, to help him walk. He grabbed a piece of chalk, which he used to write his name on a nearby blackboard.
"Alastor Moody, Ministry malcontent, and your new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, I am here because Dumbledore asked me to, end of story, any questions?" He asked, looking around for a moment, happy to see no raised hands "Good, now, when it comes to the Dark Arts, I believe in in the practical approach…but before such demonstrations, who can tell me how many unforgiveable curses there are?"
"Three sir" Hermione immediatley spoke up
"Correct" Moody said "And why are they as such?"
"The name is self-explanatory" James replied, causing Hermione to glare his way "The intent for the use of such spells are unforgiveable, using such spells…"
"Will give you a one way ticket to Azkaban, that is correct boy" Moody finished, taking out his wand "Now, the Ministry says that you are too young to see such spells and what they do, but I called bullshit! You need to know what you are up against and what to prepare yourself for…who can give me the name of one of the curses?"
"The Imperious Curse" Malfoy spoke up
"Ahh yes, your father would know all about that wouldn't he, boy" Moody replied, causing Malfoy to redden slightly in anger "Gave the Ministry quite a bit of grief several years back…and even now…the Imperious Curse is used to posses the mind of the target and allow the caster to control their entire being…I will be using the spell on you today, but don't worry, I will only have you do small things like jump up and down or bark like a dog and such, though I suspect one of you will be able to throw off the spell"
Everyone immediatley turned to face Harry, who didn't feel comfortable at their stares.
"Ahh, I can understand why you think that" Moody spoke "But I had someone else in mind…let's begin"
For the next several minutes, Moody went through the students, with each one being put under the spell. He had students like Malfoy do a Scottish dance, Ron sing an opera, Seamus do jumping jacks, Hermione do push ups and Pansy Parkinson act like a cat. Harry found it slightly amusing to watch. Then it was James' turn, who stood, looking unafraid, as Moody pointed his wand at him.
"Imperio" He said "Now, bark like a dog"
"Hmm, I'd rather not" James replied, shocking the classroom as he sat down
Moody let out a loud bark of laughter, seemingly in delight, as James took his seat.
"Well done, take 15 points to Slytherin Mr Badger" He said "Natural Shields I'm guessing?"
"Happens more times then not, in the family Professor" James smiled
"Good to see" Moody smiled back, before he continued the lesson, calling Harry up, pointing his wand at the boy "Imperio…slap yourself"
Harry felt a small nagging feeling in the back of his mind. A small voice urging him to carry out the order. He felt his right hand twitch slightly, as the voice in his head got louder, but he resisted as best as he could. Sweat fell down his brow, before Moody lifted the spell, causing Harry to stumble slightly but kept himself standing.
"Well done, Mr Potter" Moody said "You were able to fight the Imperious, take 15 points to Slytherin, for you as well"
Harry nodded, unsure on what to say, before he sat down. Moody walked back to his desk, where he pulled out a jar of some kind.
"Now, can anyone else give me the name of another curse?" Moody asked
"The Cr-Cruciatus Curse" Neville spoke up, looking haunted
"Correct" Moody nodded, looking at Neville sympathetically "A nasty curse that one"
Everyone watched, as Moody undid the lid on the jar, using his wand to levitate a spider out of it, placing it on Neville's desk.
"The curse is designed to cause unimaginable pain to a victim" He said, wand still pointing at the spider "Crucio!"
Instantly, the spider began twitching and squirming, letting out screeches of pain, as it seems to shrivel up slightly. Neville twitches and shakes uncomfortably at the sight, tears stinging the corner of his eyes. James too felt uncomfortable, wondering why Moody would be doing such a curse so close in proximity to Neville. Eventually, Hermione yelled out to Moody.
"STOP IT!" She exclaimed "CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S BOTHERING HIM? STOP IT!"
Moody lifted the spell from the spider and eyed Hermione for a moment. Levitating his wand, he approach Hermione's desk, placing the spider in front of her.
"Perhaps you would like to give us the final curse, Miss Granger" He spoke in a quiet voice
Tears pooled in Hermione's eyes, as she shook her head, frantically. Moody let out a snort of disappointment, as he pointed his wand at the spider.
"Avada Kedavra!"
Harry watched, as a familiar green light hit the spider, which immediatley keeled over and shrivelled up, on Hermione's desk. Dead.
"The Killing Curse, instant death upon impact, only one person is known to have survived it" Moody spoke, his gaze landing onto Harry "And he is sitting in this room"
Once more, all eyes turn to Harry, who begins to subconsciously rub the scar on his forehead. Moody then pulled out a flask and took a drink from it, until the signal for the end of the lesson rang across the corridors.
"I want an essay on the Unforgivables by next lesson" Moody spoke, as the students began packing everything up "Mr Longbottom, if you would stay behind for a moment…I want to talk with you"
…
Harry entered the Owlery, a letter in hand. The green light of the Killing Curse had been on his mind lately. It was the same light at the end of his dream. He wondered if it was a coincidence of some kind. In the end, he decided he would tell Sirius about everything, about the Killing Curse and his dream. He hoped Sirius would have some information for him. Harry gave his letter to Hedwig, who rubbed her head against his affectionately, before flying off to the given destination. Harry spent a moment, just looking out at the hills and the view in front of him. It was that moment, where he saw something in the distance. A figure moving across the fields. Harry watched, as the figure seemed to turn to face him, before it quickly fled in the opposite direction a few moments later. He continued to watch the area, where the figure was, expecting something to happen. But nothing did. Harry wasn't sure what it was, but he hoped it wasn't anything bad.
…
And...done. Bit of a shorty, but I think it was pretty good. We had a bit more of the cloaked man at the start, again I'd like to hear your theories on who he is. Though no name was mentioned, I'm sure you know who he was thinking about when talking about 'the boy'.
Anyway, most of this chapter took place in the Defence classroom. I'm not going to lie to you, I always forget if the class on the Unforgivables came before or after the other schools arrived. I believe it came after. Anyway, I chose to put it here, because it would give us a bit more of Mad-Eye [a character in my top five faves], and gave us some more lore regarding James' character...Natural Shields. I have read fanfiction where Harry and other characters are born with 'Natural Shields', which are basically Occlumency shields. I'm thinking about having James be the one to teach Harry about Occlumency, but currently undecided, which is why I added them.
Before I go, its nice to see people putting a vote in the poll. Even though only a few have voted, a story with a pairing between James Badger and a female Harry Potter seems to be the most popular choice so far.
That is all for now, I hope you enjoyed and I will see you in the next chapter.
Badger out
