Chapter 12
The Diary
Ever since the mishap with the Polyjuice Potion, Rarity had to stay in the hospital until she got better. Twilight and Applejack both felt bad for Rarity, so they visited her whenever they could. After their most recent visit, the two ponies made their return to the common room.
"So, when do you think Rarity would get better, Twilight?" Applejack asked.
"She should be better once she stops coughing up hairballs." Twilight replied.
After walking through the castle for a few minutes, Twilight and Applejack stopped as they felt their hooves step in water. That was when they noticed that there was a stream of water coming from the girls' bathroom.
"I wonder what happened." Applejack wondered.
"It seems that Moaning Moon Dancer just flooded the bathroom. Come on!" Twilight said as she led Applejack to the bathroom.
Once they entered the bathroom they were met with the sounds of running sinks and the crying of Moaning Moon Dancer. The ghost soon took notice of Twilight and Applejack and gave them a sad look.
"Have you come to throw another book at me?" Moon Dancer sniffed.
"Uh, no?" Twilight looked confused with Moon Dancer. "Why would we throw a book at you?"
"Don't ask me! I was just in my stall, minding my own business when suddenly a book fell on my head! I swear, whoever dropped that book on me, better hope I don't find them!" Moon Dancer yelled.
"Um, no offense, but I don't see what the big deal is." said Applejack. "You're a ghost, so you shouldn't even feel it."
Angered by what Applejack said, Moon Dancer floated right in front of her. "Oh, sure! Let's all throw books at Moon Dancer just because she can't feel it! 10 points if it goes through her stomach!" Applejack jumped in surprise as Moon Dancer's ghost hoof went right through her body. "50 points if it goes through her head!" This time, Moon Dancer's ghost hoof phased through Applejack's head.
After getting over her shocked, Applejack replied, "Okay, point taken!"
"Look! I just want to be alone right now, so just leave!" Moon Dancer sorrowfully floated back to her toilet.
As Moon Dancer floated away, Twilight took notice of something on the floor. It was a book that she didn't recognize. Curious, Twilight picked it up to take a closer look at it. The book was blank and had nothing on the cover, but this just got Twilight even more curious.
Later that night, Twilight was in the common room looking through the pages of the book. She was disappointed to learn that ever single page was blank. At least, apart from the first page, which read, 'Property of Mosbar.' Twilight had no idea who this Mosbar was, but he clearly took no time into writing in his diary.
Twilight felt that she might as well write in it if nobody else was going to use it. She dipped her quill in some ink before she wrote, 'My name is Twilight Sparkle.' As soon as she wrote that, the writing suddenly disappeared from the page. Puzzled by what happened, Twilight took a closer look at book only for a completely different sentence to appear on the page, which read, 'Hello, Twilight Sparkle! My name is Mosbar!"
Twilight couldn't believe what she was seeing. It appeared that the owner of the diary was able to communicate with her, somehow. That was when Twilight came up with an idea. Dipping her quill in ink once more, Twilight wrote, 'Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets?'
Just like last time, Twilight's sentence disappeared and the diary replied, 'Yes.' Feeling hopeful, Twilight wrote, 'Can you tell me?' Twilight patiently waited for a response before the diary replied, 'No.'
With a defeated sigh, Twilight was about to give up and close the diary before a new sentence appeared on the page. 'But I can show you. I will take you back 50 years in the past.' Before Twilight could ponder what that sentence meant, she was suddenly engulfed in a bright light.
The bright light soon dimmed before Twilight rubbed her eyes. She looked around to see that she was in the castle's hallways, but something about the castle seemed different somehow. It wasn't long before she took notice of a colt right in front of her. He looked slighter older than she was and he looked as though he was focused on something. He was staring at a stretcher being dragged by a couple of ponies. Lying down on the stretcher was the body of a pony, which was covered up by a blanket. Once the stretcher was out of sight, Twilight decided to approach the colt.
"Um, excuse me. Can you tell me where I am?" Twilight asked the colt, but he looked as though he didn't even hear her. "Are you Mosbar?"
"Mosbar." said a familiar voice.
Twilight looked up the stairs to see a younger Professor Celestia. Twilight was shocked by what she saw. It was clear to her that she was now in the past.
"Professor Celestia." Mosbar greeted the alicorn. "Are the rumors true? Is Canterlot really going to be shut down."
Celestia gave a sad nod. "I'm afraid so, Mosbar. After the death of the girl, Canterlot has to be shut down."
"But, Canterlot is my home. They can't just close it down!" Mosbar argued.
"I'm sorry, Mosbar. It is not up to me. Our headmistress has already made her decision."
"I see."
Mosbar was silent as he avoided eye contact with Celestia. Curious, the alicorn asked, "Mosbar, is there something you wish to tell me?"
Mosbar shook his head. "No, Professor."
"Very well. Goodnight, Mosbar." Celestia dismissed her student.
"Goodnight, Professor." Mosbar replied.
Once Celestia left, Mosbar made his way through the castle. He occasionally looked behind him as if he was checking to see that nobody was following him. Twilight did her best to keep up with him before he stopped at a door. Mosbar used his magic to unlock the door. The door soon opened, revealing a young Big Mac.
Startled by the presence of the colt, Big Mac shut an open chest before he greeted Mosbar with an awkward smile.
"Ah, Mosbar! Wh-What can I do for you?" Big Mac stuttered.
Big Mac could tell from Mosbar's serious expression that he was not in the mood to talk.
"I've come to kill the monster." Mosbar said, drawing out his wand.
"Wh-What?" Big Mac nervously took his eyes off Mosbar and stared at the chest he closed.
"I know that you've never meant to hurt anypony, but the dead girl's parents would be here soon! The least we can do is make sure that the thing that murdered their daughter is dead!"
"No! The Flyder Prince would never hurt anypony! I swear!"
"Step aside, Big Mac!" Mosbar pushed Big Mac out of the way before using his magic to open the chest.
As the top of the chest sprung open, a giant fly-spider hybrid flew out of the chest. Mosbar tried casting spells on the flyder as it flew around the room in an effort to escape. It soon flew past Mosbar as it escaped through the open door.
"Fly away, Flyder Prince! Get out of here!" Big Mac yelled to the flyder.
Angered by what happened, Mosbar pointed his wand at Big Mac in a threatening manner.
"You've just made a big mistake, Big Mac! They are going to have your wand for this!"
Shocked by what she witnessed, Twilight felt herself getting enveloped by light once again. As she opened her eyes once more, Twilight found herself back in the common room. It took Twilight a moment to process what just happened. As much as she didn't want to believe it, Twilight knew that she had to accept the truth. Big Mac opened the Chamber of Secrets.
