Best Friend's Brother 51

Trudging down the halls of Konoha High, the red headed male tiredly wiped sleep from his eyes before entering into the all too familiar room.

"Sasori my man!" Deidara's voice teased making the red head roll his eyes. "Enjoy the extra beauty sleep?" Deidara asked with a smirk as Sasori's brown eyes narrowed at him.

Deidara currently sat on a stool next to Kurenai's desk while the teacher herself seemed to be missing from the room. The blonde had on a simple black long sleeve with dark blue jeans and black high tops.

"You should have woken me up" Sasori said in an annoyed tone.

Deidara released a laugh.

"Hey I'm not the one who told you to take an extra shift the night before we were supposed to intern here" Deidara said holding his hands up in surrender.

Sasori scowled at the smile plastered on the blonde's face. He was irritated. He'd taken the extra shift with his job that lasted much longer than usual which of course resulted in him returning late and forgetting to set his alarm clock before collapsing onto his bed. When he'd awoken he was still in his work clothes with no time to change since he overslept, he was also alone as Deidara left without him and had to have Kisame bring him to the high school.

"I bet now you regret saying I'm not allowed to wake you up hn?" Deidara asked quirking a brow at Sasori.

"Shut up" Sasori said running a hand through his red locks before noticing the white mug of coffee by Deidara.

He did not hesitate reaching over him to retrieve it, bringing the mug to his lips and taking a sip as his eyes shut in relief. Deidara's laughter ceased.

"Hey Sasori" Deidara called trying to get the attention of the redhead who promptly ignored him in favor of finishing the caffeinated beverage.

Deidara reached over to take the cup from Sasori, only to have his hand swatted away as Sasori turned away from him.

"Sasori" Deidara tried again only to be ignored as Sasori seemed to gulp down the rest of the drink.

'Idiot can just get another cup later' Sasori thought before the sound of a woman clearing her throat caught his attention.

Kurenai stood in the doorway of her class with a small stack of files. The woman was dressed more casually than usual, wearing a pair of blue jeans and a red turtle neck sweater with a black puffy vest over top.

"Like the coffee?" Kurenai asked walking further into the room.

"I tried to tell him" Deidara stated with a shrug, before Sasori's eyes slightly widened in realization.

He quickly looked down to the now empty mug in his hand, slowly turning it before seeing the small stain of red lipstick on the other side of the cup. Sasori immediately brought a hand to his face before releasing a heavy sigh.

"I-" Sasori began to say before being cut off by the woman.

"It's fine" Kurenai laughed. "Asuma made it too strong this morning anyways" she went on with a dismissive wave before seeming to realize what she said and paused.

Both boys raised a brow at her before she gave a dismissive shake of her head before deciding to change the subject.

"We can always stop at Starbucks on the way out" the woman stated making confused looks cross the faces of both young men.

"Way out?" Deidara asked.

"Oh yes, today we're going to be restocking some of the art supplies. We placed an order with a company that operates in a town just outside of Konoha" the woman explained before her red eyes lit up.

Kurenai quickly made her way to her desk, digging through the contents of the top drawer before turning back to the boys with two straws in her fist.

"Go ahead and pick a straw" Kurenai stated.

Sasori and Deidara both exchanged a look before each boy reached out to take hold of a straw. When they pulled back, Deidara wore a large smile as he happily displayed his long straw, while Sasori wore an indifferent look as he looked at the short straw in his hand.

'Figures' Sasori thought before both looked to Kurenai for further instruction.

"Great!" Kurenai exclaimed handing the stack of files to Sasori and taking her empty mug from his hand. "Deidara will be coming to get the order with me while Sasori stays to watch my other classes" Kurenai announced making Sasori notably stiffen while Deidara snickered.

"Am I qualified to do that?" Sasori asked.

"Of course" Kurenai said reassuringly. "We have a bit of a sub shortage with the district and I've heard that Orochimaru has even done it on more than one occasion with his aide" the woman explained.

"Yes but-" Sasori started to argue.

"Listen I know it might seem like a lot but a lot of the kids really respect you so you'll be fine" Kurenai stated.

"I think you mean fear" Deidara interjected earning a glare from Sasori.

"Right now a lot of my classes are doing partner projects, so the only thing you need to do is take attendance and make sure they stay on task" Kurenai said. "Also you won't be completely alone since I have my TA coming in later and since she knows what to do, you won't need to worry about her" Kurenai went on.

"Wouldn't it be easier if Deidara and I could get the order?" Sasori asked.

"Need an official Konoha High faculty member to sign off on the paperwork" Kurenai replied.

Sasori gave a nod of understanding before Deidara slung an arm over his shoulders.

"Look on the bright side un" Deidara said with a grin. "You get to relax when you aren't babysitting" Deidara joked making Sasori push him away as Kurenai shook her head with a small smile.

"We'll be back just after 6th period prep ends" Kurenai stated catching the attention of both boys.

"That long?" both Sasori and Deidara seemed to ask at once.

Kurenai nodded.

Both turned to each other before looking back to the dark haired woman.

"Maybe we should switch" Sasori suggested.

"Yeah!" Deidara agreed. "Sasori has had a long day already so a trip might be nice right un?" the blonde explained now making Sasori turn to him with a confused look.

Realization dawned on the redhead as he mentally ran over why Deidara would want to stay, making him give the blonde a deadpanned look.

"Guys calm down. I think I know what this is about" Kurenai stated holding her hands up as both boys fell silent and turned to her. "You guys have always been close and no matter how much you two fought, you always chose to sit together in your classes when you were here and now you even live together in college. Separation anxiety is a real thing but a few hours apart isn't the end of the world" the woman said encouragingly, making both males figuratively shatter.

"I think there's been a misunderstanding un" Deidara stated holding a hand up as he spoke.

"No I get it" Kurenai said placing a hand over her heart. "You guys have nothing to be embarrassed of because it's a lot more common than you think. You guys know Natsumi, well from what I've heard from Kakashi and even Orochimaru, she and her friend Sasuke are a lot like you guys with how much they fight, yet they're very close as well." Kurenai explained making both males once again stiffen.

Sasori could tell by the look on Deidara's face that he was somewhere between embarrassed and jealous, so he knew he'd have to be the sensible one.

"I don't mind staying" Sasori said with a sigh.

Kurenai nodded with a smile before turning to Deidara.

"Come on Deidara, the sooner we go the sooner we get back" Kurenai said making the blonde perk up in interest.

"Alright un" Deidara stated. "But I'll help drive and we'll be back by 5th period" the blonde said pointing to Sasori and earning an eye roll before he walked out after Kurenai.

...

Sasori seemed to have a migraine that persisted as the day went on. Class after class seemed to make it worsen but he did his best to manage with it as he went about taking attendance and watching over the students to make sure they didn't get too loud.

After the bell would ring, the room would be brought to silence, at which point Sasori would walk around with his hands in his pockets giving a small speech on how Kurenai was not here and he was in charge, the students would need to raise their hands when called on for attendance then work with their partners on their projects while keeping the noise to a minimum on account of his headache.

Thankfully there were no interruptions and the classes were rather uneventful until after lunch. The art class was tame enough but in the midst of them working on their projects, a certain pair's conversation caught his attention.

"First I'll gather the materials, cut down the wood we'll be using, assemble it, and then you can paint it" Kankuro explained with a compelling smile.

Natsumi wore a stoic expression as she crossed her arms over her chest.

The pair currently sat together in the far corner of their art class.

"But I want to do more than paint it" Natsumi argued. "Why don't I gather the materials? Or at least help you shave down the pieces or even assemble it?" Natsumi asked.

"Come on Natsumi, you know that puppets are my specialty" Kankuro stated. "It's just easier if I do those things especially since you're on crutches" the boy pointed out.

"Yeah but I'm going to need to start walking without them soon, so I could come with you to get the materials, help you with shaving down some of the pieces we'll need, and maybe you could even teach me about-" Natsumi started to argue before Kankuro dropped his head with a sigh.

"I don't want you over working yourself on account of a project" Kankuro stated.

"Why?" Natsumi asked.

Kankuro refused to answer, looking away from Natsumi.

"Kankuro…" Natsumi threatened.

"Ok fine" he stated. "I was only thinking that you've been through a lot lately, so you don't need any more on your plate than what you have." The boy said motioning to her ankle. "If we can help, then we should, because you don't need to be pushed any more than you already have bee-".

Natsumi raised an eyebrow, making him lightly sweat.

"Sorry wrong word choice ..." Kankuro exclaimed slapping a hand to his forehead. "You know what I mean ... If I'm being honest I just feel bad that-"the boy said before falling silent as he noticed the presence of Sasori, who by now heard enough.

The redhead was standing behind Natsumi with his hands in his pockets looking over the pair with a blank expression.

"What do you want?" Kankuro asked rudely as he narrowed his eyes at Sasori.

"It's kind of hard to miss the train wreck of a conversation that's taking place" Sasori replied as Natsumi now turned in her seat to face him as well.

"Sorry" Natsumi apologized with a small nod before Kankuro scoffed.

"Also if it's such an issue, maybe consider working with different partners because this teamwork is by far the worst I've seen" Sasori pointed out. "Natsumi has a point you know" Sasori continued looking directly at Kankuro. "She's hurt but she's not helpless. She can help you if you'd let her and you should acknowledge how she feels cheated if you're not being fair with letting her do her part" Sasori stated bluntly.

Silence befell the room as everyone seemed to tune into the altercation.

"You have a lot of nerve lecturing me on what it means to feel cheated or even how to be fair" Kankuro retorted.

"Excuse me?" Sasori asked raising a brow.

"You heard me" Kankuro spat. "You really have no class. You go around acting all high and mighty but there's no hiding who you really are" Kankuro stated. "You're a liar and a cheater Sasori".

Natsumi's mouth was agape. Whenever Kankuro would say something rude to Sasori, it never seemed like it bothered the redhead with how he'd give a dismissive comment or just walk away, but now was different. The tension in the air made her stiffen in discomfort before awaiting Sasori's response.

"Quiet" Sasori said, making Kankuro scoff while Natsumi swallowed a lump that was forming in her throat.

She'd heard Sasori yell before. He practically did it all the time in his fights with Deidara, but the difference between those pointless scrabbles and now, is the pure malice she could pick up in his voice.

"Why? Can't handle the-" Kankuro started to ask before being cut off by Sasori.

"I said quiet!" Sasori snapped making Kankuro fall silent.

"I don't want to hear another word from you. As far as I'm concerned, you're nothing but a child with no regard for how you should speak to your superiors. Regardless of any petty discrepancy you have with me, you should know this isn't the time or place. You should know your place especially since I'm in charge right now and in no mood for any back talk. Take your things and report to Danzo's office." Sasori said pointing toward the door and leaving the room in shock.

Natsumi flinched, everyone knows that Danzo is the school Dean who handles all the detentions and is very strict on his disciplinary actions.

Kankuro's mouth was agape in shock before the boy scoffed and turned away from the redhead to gather his things before promptly storming out of the room.

"And if any of you have anything further to add, feel free to join him and leave" Sasori announced to the remaining students.

The classroom stayed in tense silence.

'What was all that?' Natsumi thought. 'I've never seen Sasori get that mad before' she thought letting her eyes follow the redhead around the room. It seemed like she wasn't the only one either, as she noticed a few classmates watching him before flinching their gaze away as he'd pass. 'He's still really mad' Natsumi noted. 'Maybe Kankuro really touched a nerve with the whole liar and cheater thing' Natsumi pondered.

Sasori continued to walk around class with barely hidden rage while everyone else continued to work on their projects.

The bell soon sounded, making most of the students swiftly exit except for Natsumi. She took her time packing up and shooting tentative glances at the redheaded TA that currently seethed at the teacher's desk.

"You're going to be late if you move any slower" Sasori's voice cut through the silence like a hot knife, making Natsumi slightly jump in her seat.

"Well with how fast the others rushed out, it might seem like that" Natsumi replied bringing her attention to her bag as she zipped it closed.

Turning her gaze back to Sasori, she observed the boy tiredly dropping his head to the teacher's desk with a small thud before hearing him release a sigh.

"Sasori?" Natsumi called, earning nothing but silence in return.

She swung her bag over her shoulder before rising from her seat and using her crutches to make her way over to the quiet young man.

"Sasori?" Natsumi asked standing in front of the desk and slightly leaning her head to the side to gain his attention.

"Natsumi I'm not the most patient person on a good day so whatever it is, either spit it out or get out" Sasori replied curtly, not even bothering to lift his head from the desk.

There was silence as Natsumi was slightly hurt by the harshness of his tone, but she still chose to speak.

"I just wanted to ask ... Are you ok?" she asked.

The question took Sasori by surprise, so much so that it made him raise his head from the desk to look up at the girl in front of him.

"What?" Sasori asked in disbelief.

Natsumi bit the inside of her cheek as her brows furrowed before her glance fell to her feet.

"I'm sorry, that's probably a dumb question to ask on account of what happened, but I was just worried" she admitted further baffling the young man.

"You were worried?" Sasori asked with a raised eyebrow, leaning back in his seat with his hands folded over his chest. "You're right Natsumi that is a dumb question on account of what happened. I didn't ask to be a babysitter today, I didn't ask for that brat's outburst or even half of what's been wrong today" Sasori stated as Natsumi lifted her gaze from the ground. "But now I want to know why you felt the need to ask" Sasori said.

"I've never heard you go off like that." Natsumi replied. "You and Deidara fight a lot but I don't think it's ever gotten to that intensity and I ..." Natsumi started to explain before trailing off as a conflicted look crossed her face.

She tentatively bit her bottom before releasing a small sigh and shutting her eyes.

"I know why Kankuro acts that way towards you" the teen girl admitted. "And that's not to say that I think what he did was right. I've known you for a while and I don't want to believe what I heard." Natsumi said before opening her eyes to see the red head rising from his seat and making his way around the desk to lean against it in front of her with his arms crossed over his chest.

"What exactly did you hear?" Sasori asked pointedly.

"That you lied and cheated in an art competition last year" Natsumi replied. "Kankuro said that the contest was for amateurs only but you technically aren't one" she went on.

There was a silence between the two until Sasori released a small chuckle while shaking his head.

"So that's what the brat is upset about" Sasori muttered. "And technically that is what happened" Sasori stated with a shrug.

Natsumi raised a brow in question.

"Sasori I-" Natsumi began before the boy cut her off.

"I assume his pride was more wounded for losing the title than the actual prize" Sasori suddenly stated. "Then again he has a lot of nerve claiming it should've been him, considering that he used one of my old toy designs" Sasori laughed. "I'm almost flattered" the redhead said more to himself than the girl in front of him.

"I'm confused" Natsumi said regaining the attention of Sasori. "You were mad just a minute ago but now you're laughing and ... wait Kankuro was right!" the girl exclaimed. "You did cheat" the girl said. "But why?" Natsumi asked.

"It's a long story Natsumi and you don't really have the time for it unless you plan on being late for your next class" Sasori stated.

"I want to know why Sasori" Natsumi stated.

Sasori scoffed before looking to the side and releasing a deep breath. There was no response aside from the truth that could satisfy the teen's curiosity and unless he wanted her persistent bugging he knew that the best course of action was to just get over with it.

"The competition was for amateurs but you signed up anyways. You saw that one of your old designs was being used in the contest but you didn't say anything because it would call attention to you. But why?" Natsumi asked.

"Did your friend tell you about the prize?" Sasori asked making Natsumi fall silent. "Because it was enough to pay for not only my housing, but all of my school supplies for this year" Sasori stated making Natsumi's mouth drop open in shock. "I needed the money" Sasori stated simply.

"Why couldn't you find another competition to enter, one for professionals?" Natsumi asked.

"Because it wouldn't have been a guarantee" Sasori said bluntly. "I needed to be sure I won and even if that meant taking advantage of a few amateurs" the redhead went on.

Silence befell the pair.

"It's not anything you'd understand Natsumi. You're just a kid. I have to work harder than anyone else because I don't have a guaranteed future that's being handed to me. When you come from the wrong tax bracket, financial aid isn't going to be much help either." Sasori said bitterly, as he shook his head with a sigh.

"Wrong tax bracket?" Natsumi asked.

"You're looking at the disowned heir to the Red Sand Association" Sasori stated.

'The Red Sand Association?' Natsumi thought.

It was silent for a few moments before Natsumi spoke.

"I have no idea who that is." Natsumi said.

Sasori sighed.

"I forget you're not from Konoha" Sasori replied. "The Red Sand Association is my grandmother's company that specializes in buying undergoing companies, breaking them up, and reselling them." He explained with Natsumi nodding in understanding.

"Every time someone finds out, their first question is what the hell am I doing majoring in Art and not Business." Sasori released a bitter chuckle before looking to the side. "But when my parents died, my grandmother was the only one there for me and I was the only heir to her company. The only thing is, I didn't want a damn thing to do with it" Sasori went on looking back to Natsumi.

"Well dear Granny Chiyo didn't take too well to my decision to be an Art major. She told me it was either a business major or she would disown me, and I'd be all on my own for my future." Sasori stated. before looking up to see Natsumi's brows crease in concern.

"That must've been hard" Natsumi noted.

"Don't do that" Sasori demanded. "Don't look at me like I'm this pitiful thing because honestly I'm managing just fine and frankly, I know I'm happier struggling to do what I love rather than be the miserable puppet for an old bat's family business" Sasori stated making Natsumi unusually silent, which he didn't notice. "But like I said you might not understand that" Sasori said.

A small frown crossed Natsumi's lips.

"You'd be surprised" Natsumi mumbled, thinking of her father. Sasori merely raised an eyebrow in response.

Natsumi shook her head.

"Never mind. Can you go on?" Natsumi asked.

"There's not really much else I can say. I have always enjoyed building puppets but didn't decide to choose it as a career choice until I was a sophomore in high school. My grandmother sent me to Konoha High after the district shut down my old school and that was around the time, I met Deidara and the others." Sasori explained.

"But when you left, what did she say? I mean I guess if her plan was always for you to take over her company, then it must've hit her pretty hard" Natsumi said tentatively.

"I imagine it was. I mean her only living remnant of her son, walks out on her. She probably assumed I would pick a life of privilege over art, but I surprised her. When she gave me the ultimatum, I gave her a decision and walked out." Sasori stated.

"Where did you go?" Natsumi asked.

Sasori stayed silent for a while until he spoke.

"I stayed with the other Akatsuki members." Sasori admitted, making Natsumi's eyes widen.

Natsumi then released a small giggle upon seeing the slight blush to Sasori's cheeks.

"Well, I'm sure you were glad to have your friends when you needed them the most." Natsumi commented making Sasori stiffen slightly.

"If you repeat this to anyone, I will kill you" Sasori threatened the girl, earning another laugh before he gave a dismissive eye roll.

"But what happened next?" Natsumi asked eagerly.

"I left, and I applied to the university as an Art major. I apply for almost every scholarship I can, attend classes, and work part-time when I can." Sasori explained.

"Is it hard?" Natsumi asked thoughtfully.

Sasori raised a brow at Natsumi before motioning down to his day-old work attire, that was slightly wrinkled after having been slept in as well.

"You tell me" Sasori said in a sarcastic tone that made the girl scoff as a small smile crossed her lips.

Natsumi was about to continue her questioning until the bell interrupted her, stating she was late for her next class. She looked to the clock on the wall, her brown eyes widening slightly as she noticed the time.

"Um I might need a note" Natsumi said earning an annoyed huff from Sasori before the boy pulled open a drawer and took out a pass that already had Kurenai's signature on it.

"Where are you going?" Sasori asked, already having a pen in hand as he scribbled Natsumi's name on the small pink slip.

"Kakashi-sensei's English class" Natsumi replied awkwardly adjusting the crutches under her arms.

"The teacher you wrote your interview on us for?" Sasori asked, referring to the Akatsuki.

"Hn" Natsumi replied with a nod. "But we're working on poetry readings right now" Natsumi stated.

"I remember having to do those" Sasori said giving a head shake. "Deidara was the worst partner, but I assume you get along better with yours" he commented making Natsumi's eyes widen once more.

"Uh funny thing actually, you kind of sent my partner to the office earlier" Natsumi said making Sasori cease in his writing.

"Ah I see." Sasori sighed before running a hand through his red hair and using his free hand to give Natsumi her pass.

Natsumi accepted the note with a nod of thanks before turning to make her leave but stopping as she stood in the doorway of the classroom.

"Sasori?" Natsumi called, gaining the attention of the boy.

"Do you need help getting there?" Sasori asked knowingly.

Natsumi shook her head and turned back to look at him.

"I actually have a question" Natsumi admitted.

Sasori nodded for her to ask her question.

"It seems like everything really worked out for you. Do you ever regret the decision to walk out on your grandmother's company?" Natsumi asked.

There was no denying the slight surprise on the red head's face as he took in her question. Sasori quietly pondered over her question at Kurenai sensei's desk before speaking.

"If you live your life according to what others want, you'll never be happy." Sasori stated. "My grandmother is a smart lady; she's been around a long time. I'm more than confident that she'll figure something out so I'm not going to lose sleep over what I know was the right call for me" Sasori went on.

"Yeah but-" Natsumi started to say until being cut off by the redhead.

"Stop wasting time and get to class" Sasori said. "I'm sure a lot of people would find your concern enduring but right now you're starting to become annoying. As far as I can see, you won't be in a similar situation as me." Sasori lectured the girl making her narrow her eyes at him slightly before releasing a small huff and turning to leave.

"You really didn't have to do this" Natsumi pointed out as Kankuro sat opposite of her.

"Trust me Natsumi, this was more than a suggestion from Temari" Kankuro stated, making the girl raise her brows at him. "Not to say that I wouldn't have apologized on my own" Kankuro replied holding his hands up in defense. "Her threats just make it happen quicker" he admitted making Natsumi shake her head as she crossed her arms over her chest while her attention turned to the large window they sat by.

The pair currently sat inside a small ice cream shop in the shopping district of Konoha by the largest window facing the street.

"Look I didn't know that jerk planned on sending me to the office and I didn't account for how not being there would make you late for our next class, so I'm sorry" Kankuro apologized.

"Come on it's not like I was really that late. I had a pass and Kakashi-sensei was pretty clear that even if I didn't, he wouldn't be the teacher to give the kid on crutches detention" Natsumi explained looking back to the boy. "Wait a minute, why aren't you in detention? I'm pretty sure talking back even if it's just to an aid would mean a day" Natsumi asked.

"Tomorrow is when I'll be having detention" Kankuro replied grabbing the back of his neck.

"Hn" Natsumi replied looking back out the window.

There was a brief silence between the two before Kankuro chose to speak.

"If it's any consolation, I was already chewed out by Sasuke and Temari" Kankuro stated.

"So that's the only reason you're apologizing?" Natsumi asked.

"What? No!" Kankuro replied. "Natsumi I really am sorry" Kankuro repeated now holding his hands together in a pleading way.

Natsumi turned to face him, seeing the genuine remorse on his face and prompting a sigh from her.

"Really?" Natsumi asked.

"Yes, and like I said I was going to apologize. I just kind of planned to do it over a text or even tomorrow but seeing that your best friend and my sister are literal demons sometimes, they decided it would be best if I treated you to something you like too" Kankuro explained with a shrug that made Natsumi release a small laugh. "And as much as I hate to admit it, that jerk did have a pretty good point about the project." He said while looking away with an annoyed scowl on his face. "I'm sorry if I made you feel like you couldn't help and if you want …you can do more for it and I'll even teach you somethings about the puppets" Kankuro offered looking back at Natsumi.

'Wow it must have taken a lot for him to admit that Sasori was right' Natsumi thought before giving a nod of agreement.

"Ok fine I'll forgive you Kankuro" Natsumi said with as she uncrossed her arms. "But I resent that Sasuke and Temari both thought food would make me feel better" Natsumi commented in hopes to lighten the atmosphere as it felt weird having to have such a heavy conversation with Kankuro. She liked to spend time with him, and she liked him best when he was happy and joking around.

"Temari suggested I buy you something, but Sasuke made it a little more specific when he recommended something sweet" Kankuro admitted making Natsumi scoff as she felt a small rush of heat go to her cheeks.

"I hate them" Natsumi mumbled in embarrassment as her gaze shifted to her lap before hearing Kankuro's laugh and looking back to him.

"So does that mean I'm off the hook for getting you something?" Kankuro asked with grin as he motioned to the counter behind them.

"No, it doesn't" Natsumi replied. "I just … shut up I want a banana split" Natsumi announced making Kankuro roll his eyes as he smiled.

"Ok I see" Kankuro stated beginning to rise from his seat. "You don't need to be bossy like Temari" Kankuro joked making Natsumi's mouth drop open in a smile as the boy laughed. "Just saying" Kankuro said closing his eyes with a shrug before being struck in the shoulder as Natsumi leaned across the table.

"That's not funny Kankuro!" Natsumi exclaimed.

"Ow! Now you're really acting like her by hitting me!" Kankuro stated taking hold of his arm as laughter now escaped both teens. Natsumi continued to laugh until looking out the window again and this time seeing a familiar pair of onyx eyes.

"Itachi, remind me why we are the ones doing restock duty instead of Sasori and Deidara?" Kisame asked as he and Itachi made their way down the walkways of the shopping district.

"You saw the message Kisame, Deidara told us that Sasori had a long day and was exhausted" Itachi replied. "This works out as well, since Sasori doesn't get paid until next week" Itachi pointed out making Kisame scoff.

Kisame currently wore a pair of black pants with a grey hoodie layered underneath a black leather jacket with black combat boots. Itachi wore a dark grey jacket with a black beanie, dark blue jeans and a pair of black high tops.

"Yeah, I'm sure that's what Deidara wanted us to think, but we both know the real reason is because he didn't have his half for everything" Kisame pointed out, earning a hum from Itachi. "And you just happened to be the sucker that bought his lie because you're so soft" Kisame teased, making the Uchiha narrow his eyes at him.

"Quiet Kisame" Itachi replied.

"Just saying" Kisame replied holding his hands up in defense before catching sight of something that made him stop. "Hey Itachi, isn't that the kid?" Kisame asked peeking the Uchiha's interest as he nodded in the direction across the street, towards an ice cream shop.

Tracing Kisame's gaze, Itachi's eyes lit up in recognition as he saw Natsumi sitting at a table by the window with a boy that had brown hair and black hoodie underneath a school jacket.

"Indeed, it is" Itachi replied as he too now came to a halt to observe the actions of the dark-haired girl and boy across from her. "It looks like she's with one of her classmates" Itachi noted.

"It looks like she's on a date" Kisame clarified.

The two teens seemed to be having a discussion as Natsumi shook her head and crossed her arms over her chest before looking back to the boy as he continued to speak. The boy sheepishly grabbed the back of his neck, prompting Natsumi to look away while he now held his hands up in a plea.

"Hn" Itachi replied in recognition.

"Or he's at least begging for a second one" Kisame thought aloud as he turned his attention away from the pair and earned a small chuckle from Itachi.

"I suppose" Itachi replied as he looked back to Kisame.

"I never would've guessed that we'd see her on a date though" Kisame suddenly stated making Itachi raise a brow at him.

"And why's that?" the Uchiha asked curiously.

"Well, if she's always hanging out with your brother, I kind of figured that no guy would want to ask her out." Kisame explained. "You know it's kind of like how no one asks out Konan because Yahiko and Nagato" Kisame pointed out.

Itachi gave a nod of understanding.

"So good on him" Kisame stated making Itachi raise a brow in question. "It took real guts to ask her out especially since we can assume that he's aware of Sasuke. I just wonder if he's caught onto the fact that he's not her type" Kisame said sparking the Uchiha's interest.

"And what makes you think you know her type?" Itachi asked.

Kisame chuckled.

"You're telling me you don't?" Kisame asked. "Because I'm thinking her type is slightly older, red hair, brown eyes, bad attitude, and a passion for art" Kisame teased.

Itachi narrowed his eyes at Kisame before shifting his gaze back to the dark-haired girl.

"Funny, we both know that she doesn't like Sasori. Natsumi is a nice girl. She deserves someone who isn't bitter but can actually make her happy" Itachi said before taking note to how the dark-haired girl was nodding and smiling at the boy across from her.

"Well, that guy doesn't seem bitter" Kisame pointed out as he too looked back to the two teens in the window.

They watched as Natsumi looked down and the boy across from her grinned before motioning to the counter behind him. She then spoke making him smile before he started to get up but then he stopped. He said something that made her mouth drop open in a shocked smile whilst he laughed. The playful banter was nice, comfortable and familiar. When they saw Natsumi reach across the table to strike the boy, they noted how now both teens were laughing.

"He sure doesn't" Itachi sighed, before his brows suddenly rise in surprise as Natsumi turned to meet his gaze.

'Itachi?' Natsumi thought as her brown eyes lit up in recognition of the older Uchiha brother.

She watched as he seemed to freeze upon meeting her gaze, allowing the two to share a moment of eye contact until she saw Kisame suddenly sling an arm around Itachi's shoulders and send the girl a wave. Itachi seemed to send his friend an annoyed look saying something to him until Kisame's face lit up with an idea.

Catching onto Natsumi's sudden silence, Kankuro took notice of the girl's line of sight, before speaking up.

"Those are Sasori's friends, right? The other Akatsuki members?" Kankuro asked, making Natsumi turn back to face him.

"Yeah, that's two of them" Natsumi replied awkwardly shifting in her chair.

"I see" Kankuro stated before shifting his gaze back to the window. "They're coming" he noted, making Natsumi slightly quickly turn her head to see Kisame all but dragging Itachi across the street.

"Oh no" Natsumi spoke as she watched Itachi shake his head only to be meant with laughter from Kisame.

Suddenly both young men entered the establishment, Kisame looking around until noticing where Natsumi sat and beginning to pull Itachi along with him.

"Well, well, well if it isn't Natsumi!" Kisame addressed the girl with one of his typical shark like grins whilst Itachi pushed off his arm.

"Hi Kisame" Natsumi greeted the older boy with a small nod before nervously shifting her gaze to Kankuro, who seemed to be ignoring the two as he was now on his phone.

"And what are you up to this afternoon?" Kisame asked.

"Kisame" Itachi warned, sending his friend an annoyed look.

"Hey Itachi, don't be rude. Say hi to Natsumi" Kisame pushed, making Itachi's eyes narrow at him until he turned to the dark-haired girl.

"Hi Itachi" Natsumi greeted the older, earning an apologetic look from the Uchiha before he spoke.

"Hello Natsumi" Itachi said before he took shifted his gaze toward Kankuro for a moment. "We don't mean to interrupt but we-" Itachi started to say until being cut off by Kisame.

"We thought that was you!" Kisame stated. "We traded restock duty with Deidara and Sasori so we're out shopping" Kisame announced.

Natsumi noticed the slight stiffening of Kankuro as he noted the redhead's name.

"Oh, I see" Natsumi replied with a nod of understanding.

"It's good to see you out! Having a nice time with…" Kisame started to ask until trailing off as he motioned to Kankuro.

"Oh, um this is-" Natsumi started to introduce her friend until he suddenly cut her off as he spoke.

"Kankuro and this feels pretty awkward so I'm going to go get that banana split" the boy stated before sending a look to Natsumi.

The dark-haired girl nodded in understanding before Kankuro suddenly rose and stepped away from the table, leaving her with the two older boys.

"I'm sorry about him" Natsumi apologized.

"He seems shy" Kisame pointed out as he looked after Kankuro's retreating form.

"Uh he's just … it's a long story" Natsumi said giving a dismissive wave before slightly bowing her head to the two older boys. "Sorry" she apologized again.

"No, we should be the one's apologizing" Itachi stated making Natsumi's eyes widen in surprise. "It was rude of us to intrude" he said sending a look to Kisame, who's only response was an eye roll.

Itachi now took hold of Kisame's shoulder, fully turning his attention to him as he spoke.

"We should leave" Itachi said, making Kisame huff as he folded his arms behind his head.

"If you insist Itachi" Kisame replied before glancing toward Natsumi. "We'll see you around Natsumi" the boy stated before slowly beginning to make his way to the exit.

Natsumi could tell Itachi was upset. His gaze was narrowed as he looked after his friend before slightly softening as he looked back to Natsumi.

"I apologies, we didn't mean to interrupt your date" Itachi suddenly said, making Natsumi stiffen.

Natsumi was shocked but before she could open her mouth, Kisame was calling for the Uchiha by the exit. She watched Itachi give an exasperated sigh before turning to leave, but just as he reached Kisame, the taller boy soon shouted.

"Sorry Natsumi! Enjoy your date!" Kisame shouted, bringing silence to the entirety of the shop as all heads turned to the frozen girl.

Kankuro hadn't stopped laughing since the pair left the ice cream shop. Natsumi on the other hand was mortified. Kankuro had agreed to drop off Natsumi at the Uchiha residence so she could study with Sasuke and Naruto.

'Did Itachi really think that I was on a date? With Kankuro?' Natsumi thought before bringing her hands to her face, groaning in embarrassment.

"Hey you alright Natsumi?" Kankuro asked as his laughter slowly faded. "Oh, come on you aren't bothered by what those Akatsuki guys said, are you?" Kankuro asked, only to be meant with silence.

Glancing over he noticed the girl had no response as she sat quietly in the passenger seat.

"Jeez is the idea of going on a date with me so bad?" Kankuro suddenly asked bringing an air of seriousness to the car. "Wow I mean I've heard it from Temari a million times, but it actually hurts if one of my friends agrees" he went on, making Natsumi drop her hands from her face before turning to see the grin on Kankuro's face.

"Kankuro!" Natsumi yelled making the boy snicker before breaking into laughter.

"Oh, come on Natsumi, the silence was killing me, and you have to admit the whole thing is kind of funny" Kankuro laughed as he refocused on the road.

"Hilarious" Natsumi said releasing a small breath as her mind drifted back to Itachi.

Arriving at the Uchiha residence, Natsumi entered the code Sasuke used to open the gate allowing Kankuro to pull forward and make their way towards the front. She exited the car with her bag and crutches before waving goodbye to Kankuro. Natsumi approached the door, giving a couple knocks before the door opened to reveal Fugaku dressed in a black suit with a blue tie and Mikoto in a black dress while putting on a pair of diamond earrings.

"Hello Natsumi" Mikoto greeted the teen girl with a smile.

"Hello" Natsumi greeted the pair with a slight bow of her head.

"Hn" she heard Fugaku reply before side stepping the teen. "I'll get the car" he stated earning a nod from his wife.

"It's good to see you dear" Mikoto said pulling the girl in for a quick hug before releasing her. "I'm sorry we must rush off like this but we're running a bit late on a reservation, but the boys are up in Sasuke's room. If you want, I can call Sasuke to come help you up?" Mikoto offered with a kind smile.

"I can help her mother" a familiar voice suddenly called out making Natsumi feel her heart drop to her stomach.

"You are such a big help Itachi" Mikoto praised the older boy as he stepped forward.

Mikoto placed a loving hand on his cheek before giving Natsumi's shoulder a squeeze and taking her leave. Natsumi and Itachi smiled as they waved off the Mikoto before entering the home.

"Would you like me to carry your things or…" Itachi started to ask before being cut off by Natsumi.

"You didn't interrupt anything earlier!" Natsumi blurted out making a moment of silence fall between the pair.

"Pardon?" Itachi asked.

Natsumi could feel the heat rushing to her face as she looked directly into the onyx eyes of Itachi.

"I … I just … Earlier when I saw you and Kisame. I was with Kankuro, but he only took me there because his sister and Sasuke made him" Natsumi explained making Itachi raise a brow.

"That boy's sister and Sasuke made him take you to the ice cream shop?" Itachi asked, earning a nod from Natsumi. "For a date?" Itachi asked for clarification.

"Yes! No! They made him take me there but not for a date!" Natsumi explained making Itachi quirk a brow.

"Sasuke shouldn't be overstepping his boundaries like that" Itachi said shaking his head in disappointment. "I'll be sure to have a talk with him" Itachi said before suddenly having his forearm grabbed by Natsumi.

"No!" Natsumi said. "I mean in a way he was, but it wasn't like that, he just wanted to make sure Kankuro apologized" Natsumi explained further intriguing Itachi.

"Apologize for what?" Itachi asked as Natsumi now realized she was still holding onto his arm.

Her face once again lit up in red before she released her hold on Itachi.

"I- He …. It's a long story" Natsumi said making Itachi give her a look of urging, before reaching out to place a careful hand on the girl's shoulder.

"Natsumi, you know that whatever it is, you can tell me" Itachi said in concerned tone that made Natsumi's heart rate increase as he leaned down to her eye level.

'It's so sweet that he's worried' Natsumi thought before realization set in.

Her mind flashed back to Halloween and the events that took place afterwards. She remembered standing in the basement stairway when she heard all the things that happened to that young man as a result of the Akatsuki and it made her stomach churn to think of any of that happening to Kankuro. Natsumi took hold of Itachi's hand on her shoulder, clutching it in plea.

"Itachi, I don't want you to get the wrong idea" Natsumi stated in a serious tone. "Kankuro didn't do anything wrong to me" the teen explained. "Well not me directly, but it's a long story with him and Sasori and I kind of just dragged myself into it" Natsumi went on before her eyes lit up once more.

She now quickly released Itachi's hand, before slapping a hand over her mouth in astonishment.

'Stupid, stupid, stupid!' Natsumi chastised herself. 'That was private and now I just blurted it out to Itachi!' Natsumi thought before lowering her gaze to the floor.

"What does Sasori have to do with it?" Itachi asked making Natsumi feel a lump in her throat.

'What do I say? Sasori said he'd kill me if I told anyone what we talked about and even if he wasn't serious, I can't just lie. But if I did lie, Itachi could tell or even ask Sasori and then Sasori would think I told Itachi and think I lied to him!' Natsumi panicked.

"I- I …" Natsumi started to say before trailing off.

'I can't lie to Itachi' Natsumi thought feeling her heartbeat race as her hands began to feel shaky.

"Kankuro just really doesn't like Sasori" Natsumi stated. "They have a lot of history together and even if Sasori doesn't egg it on, Kankuro still has a grudge. Kankuro kind of snapped at Sasori today which landed him in detention because Sasori oversaw our art class today. So, his sister and Sasuke were upset that Kankuro didn't walk me to class since he usually walks with me to English but since he wasn't there, I was late" Natsumi quickly explained. "But it wasn't entirely Kankuro's fault because I could've left on time, but I was worried and I- I just … I was stupid because I thought if I could just understand what happened between them, then I could help but I can't. Sasori has a lot going on and even if what he did was wrong, I can't blame him. But that's not to say … I just … Itachi please don't tell Sasori I told you anything" Natsumi explained quickly, looking up to meet Itachi's gaze as her breath left her lungs.

"Natsumi please calm down" Itachi said holding his hands in front of him. "Take a breath" Itachi instructed.

It was at this moment that Natsumi realized that she hadn't bothered taking a breath during the entirety of her rant and she rambled a good portion of it in a panicked pace.

"I-I'm sorry" Natsumi apologized dropping her gaze to the ground again.

"It's ok Natsumi. You don't have to explain anymore just take a deep breath with me" Itachi said in calm tone.

She felt him slowly reach up to cup her face in his hand as he brought her head up. His onyx eyes looked into her brown ones with a calming essence. He took three deep breaths with the girl before releasing his hold on her.

"Do you feel better now?" Itachi asked earning a nod from Natsumi. "Good." Itachi said with a small smile. "You know Natsumi you shouldn't forget to breath." Itachi stated. "Don't let yourself get so overworked." Itachi said.

"I just wanted you to know that I wasn't on a date with Kankuro" Natsumi blurted out. "Be-because you and Kisame had the wrong idea earlier! And when you guys said all those things the whole shop and even Kankuro were laughing and well yeah…" Natsumi quickly explained before looking down to hide the blush of embarrassment on her face.

She was surprised when she heard a chuckle escape the Uchiha.

"Forgive me" Itachi said giving a small bow of his head. "It's cute that you wanted to clarify that" Itachi said before backtracking on what he said. "I mean not that I'm looking down on you or trying to patronize you!" Itachi clarified. "I appreciate you letting me know" Itachi said as Natsumi now looked up to him with wide eyes. "I apologies, that wasn't the right thing to say. Honestly, I should have been more attentive to how loud Kisame can be." Itachi sighed as he looked to the side.

"Itachi I-" Natsumi started to say until being cut off by the ringing of her phone.

"That's probably Sasuke" Itachi said earning a nod from Natsumi as the girl quickly stuck her hand in her pocket to silence the call.

"I-" Natsumi started again only to be cut off by Itachi this time.

"You don't have to apologize for anything Natsumi. I pried in a situation that you seem to be managing well on your own and now I am keeping you when you're here to see Sasuke and Naruto." Itachi said grabbing the back of his neck.

"Hn" Natsumi nodded. "I appreciate it a lot, Itachi" she said.

"Certainly" Itachi replied before the sound of Natsumi's phone caught the attention of the pair again. "Sasuke seems rather impatient" Itachi noted as Natsumi gave a hum of agreement. Natsumi then looked to the stairs and had a sudden thought.

'How do I get up there in my condition?' she thought.

"If you'd like, it might be faster if I carried you?" Itachi offered catching the girl by surprise.

"Really?" Natsumi asked.

"Of course," Itachi replied. "If you'd like" he said before earning a small nod from Natsumi.

Natsumi nodded feeling like she was losing her voice until she felt Itachi's hand at her waist. The feeling of his hand made her heart rate increase again as she felt him pull her in before dipping down to place a hand under her legs. She was literally being swept off her feet, or in her case crutches, he lifted her up. Natsumi quickly snapped out of her awe as her right hand wrapped around the back of his neck and her other adjusted her hold on both crutches.

'Don't act stupid' Natsumi thought as she tried to focus her attention on maintaining a steady heartbeat because as of now, she was worried Itachi might feel it about to beat through her chest as he carried her up the stairs.

"You know, I enjoy our little talks" Itachi suddenly said catching Natsumi's attention as they neared the top.

"Really?" Natsumi asked earning a light chuckle from the boy.

"Hn" Itachi replied with a small nod earning a small smile from Natsumi the two reached the top.

Itachi slowly placed Natsumi down, making sure she was situated with her crutches before giving the girl a small wave as he turned to leave.

Natsumi felt like she was in a daze for the duration of her stay at the Uchiha residence. Helping Naruto with his homework seemed to go by like a snap and when the blonde left, and she was alone with Sasuke, he didn't question her silence as it was chalked up to their usual comfortable quiet. When it came time to head home, Natsumi didn't say much as Sasuke drove her home. For the first time in a while, she felt giddy as she smiled when thinking of her exchange with Itachi.

"So, what do you think?" Sasuke suddenly asked bringing the girl out of her daydream as he glanced toward the confused looking girl.

"What?" Natsumi asked, not realizing when Sasuke had started speaking.

"Were you not listening?" Sasuke asked raising a brow at the girl. "I could've been confessing my deepest darkest secret and you weren't even listening" Sasuke pointed out making the girl stiffen until noticing the smirk the boy wore.

"Stop being so dramatic" Natsumi chastised the boy as he now released a light laugh.

"Fine, I was asking if I could have dinner with you and your mom since my parents are having date night and Itachi is probably doing pizza with the Akatsuki?" Sasuke asked, making the girl scoff.

"So, you weren't bearing your soul?" Natsumi asked in a sarcastic tone as the Uchiha laughed before looking forward and having his brows crease as he pulled into Natsumi's driveway.

"Whose car is that?" Sasuke asked making Natsumi quickly look up to see a familiar dark car parked in the driveway of her home.

"Oh no" Natsumi thought as all cheerfulness of her day washed away and she felt the light drain from her as she hastened to exit Sasuke's car.

Natsumi didn't pay Sasuke any mind as she quickly maneuvered her way toward the front door in her crutches and barged her way in. It only took a second before the sound of yelling was heard coming from the dining room.

"Oh no" Natsumi breathed out again as she quickly made her way in to see her father and mother at opposite ends of the table in screaming match while Mr. Mitaka sat in the middle trying to mediate.

"I knew you weren't properly watching her!" her father said pointing an accusing finger at her mother.

"She didn't do anything wrong!" Natsumi heard her mother shout back.

"You're neglectful because you work too much!" her father shot back.

"You have no right to make that claim when you are the exact same way!" her mother retorted.

"Now please, yelling will do nothing at this time" Mr. Mitaka interjected bringing a moment of silence to the arguing adults. "Ms. Nakamaru" the man said noticing the presence of teen girl and making the three adults turn to her.

"Natsumi" her mother said in an exasperated voice.

Natsumi could see the tired frustration in her mother's usually warm eyes, and she could tell this argument had probably gone on for a while.

'I should've been home sooner' Natsumi thought guiltily before glancing over to see the stern look worn by her father as he took in her presence.

"What happened to your leg?!" the man shouted, making Natsumi shrink back where she stood. "And where have you been?" he asked before turning to her mother. "Is this what you call parenting?! She's late coming home and hurt!" he yelled.

"I fell" Natsumi interjected, making her father return his gaze to her.

"Ms. Nakamaru, obviously there is a lot to discuss, why don't you have a seat, and we can start discussing things" Mr. Mitaka offered standing from his seat and beginning to usher the girl over to the chair across from his and between her parents.

"I want answers Natsumi" her father demanded as the teen girl settled into her seat.

She could feel the anger radiating off him but knew that if she told him what really happened, he would overreact. Her gaze shifted to her mother, remembering the rampage she indicted when she received Kakashi's call about Natsumi's accident, heck even Mikoto was furious.

"Natsumi Nakamaru" her father's harsh tone cut through the silence, urging the teen to turn back to him with an explanation.

"I- I told you I fell" Natsumi stated in a meek voice.

"Was it a misunderstanding?" Mr. Mitaka suddenly asked, earning a nod from Natsumi as her gaze shifted to the table in front of her.

She heard her father release a huff before seeming to pull his phone out and scroll for something.

"Over this?" he asked as he slid his phone across the table toward Natsumi.

When her eyes ran over it, she felt her heart stop. It was the article of her and Neji.

'No way, it was taken down' Natsumi thought worriedly.

She reached out to touch it and discovered it wasn't the article but a picture of it on her father's phone.

"How did …" Natsumi started to ask until looking to the man across from her.

'Mitaka' Natsumi thought as the man refused to meet her gaze.

"Answer me Natsumi" her father demanded.

"No" Natsumi replied looking up to her father. "This has nothing to do with it … this was a misunderstanding, but it was taken down so-" Natsumi started to explain until being cut off by her father.

"That doesn't matter Natsumi" her father snapped. "This article shouldn't have come out in the first place because you should've never been aloud to go to this type of an event!" he shouted.

"It was New Year's with my friends and Christmas was a favor for a friend" Natsumi replied in a small voice.

"This time with friends and favor could've costed us our negotiation with the Nekozawa Group!" her father shot back.

"I didn't think it was something that the press would cover" Natsumi replied. "I'm sorry" she said bowing her head solemnly.

"Sorry doesn't fix this Natsumi!" her father yelled. "This is completely irresponsible behavior. You would've never acted out like this in Kyoto. You would've never been a liability to the Nakamaru Company in Kyoto. You would have never gotten hurt like this in Kyoto!" his voice boomed as Natsumi felt herself shrinking in her seat.

"It was an accident. It won't happen again" Natsumi said in voice that she could feel becoming quieter.

"Well, there will be no more accidents" her father said earning a nod from the teen. "And you are right about this not happening again because you're coming back to Kyoto with me" he stated making it feel like the entire world around her crumbled.

"What?" Natsumi asked looking at her father in disbelief before turning to her mother in worry.

The sound of someone coughing to clear their throat broke the silence in the room before the table's occupants turned to see Sasuke standing in the doorway of the dinning room holding Natsumi's bag that she'd left in his car.

"And who are you supposed to be?" Natsumi's father asked gaining the attention of the boy as he now shifted his gaze to the man.

"Sasuke" Sasuke replied as he slung Natsumi's bag over his shoulder. "Sasuke Uchiha" Sasuke introduced himself, making the man's brows rise in alarm.

"Uchiha? As in the Uchiha Company?" her father asked in intrigue.

Sasuke didn't respond, instead opting to glance towards Natsumi who seemed to be blankly staring at the table in front of her.

"It's no wonder the background check was stopped. No company would want to tarnish that name" Mitaka thought aloud.

"Regardless of that point, this is no time for any interference from one of my daughter's associates" the man stated. "Right now, we're discussing Natsumi moving back to Kyoto with me, so Sasuke Uchiha, it might be best if you go" the man said striking a nerve with his daughter.

"No wait" Natsumi called, before her father spoke again.

"Frankly, I don't think you're at liberty to ask me to leave. This is Natsumi and her mother's home after all" Sasuke pointed out.

"Excuse me?" Natsumi's father asked. "Who do you think you are to speak to me like that?" her father asked taken aback by Sasuke's defiance.

"Someone who cares about Natsumi" Sasuke replied. "And right now, she needs someone to speak up for her because she doesn't want to go with you" Sasuke stated.

"And what makes you think you're at liberty to do that?" her father asked. "I don't care if you are an Uchiha or how much you care about MY daughter. You have no right to tell me anything!" Mr. Nakamaru snapped. "Natsumi is my daughter and she's coming back to Kyoto with me!" he stated.

"We haven't settled on that" her mother hissed at him.

"What makes you think you have any room to argue? Look at Natsumi! She ended up in a tabloid and got hurt on your watch! You failed her!" her father yelled making her mother fall silent as her eyes began to water. "Natsumi will be better off back in Kyoto with me" her father stated.

"I can have her under a strict schedule with proper supervision at events that won't damage my company's integrity" he continued. "She has a reputation to uphold and fraternizing with these people will lead her to nothing but trouble. At least if she comes to Kyoto with me, we won't have to worry about interference in her future" he went on motioning to Sasuke, which he raised a brow at him.

"Sir, please calm down" Mr. Mitaka pleaded.

"You have no idea what you're talking about" Natsumi's mother said in defense of the Uchiha.

"I'm all too familiar with the type! He's nothing but a pompous arrogant brat!" her father said pointing an accusing finger at Sasuke. Before Sasuke could say something back, a shout made everyone freeze.

"ENOUGH!" Natsumi screamed.

Everyone turned their attention to Natsumi, her father beginning to become enraged.

"Natsumi" her father said in a warning tone.

"You don't get to call him that!" Natsumi yelled back much to the surprise of everyone, including herself.

She never yelled back at her father. At the most it would always be a curt response meant to poke at him but never a full-on yell like now.

"You come here unannounced. You set rules that aren't fair for anyone but yourself. You criticize my mother on the job she's doing on her own, when she has been for the past 17 years! You tell me everything that I do wrong and constantly remind me that I'm not good enough for your company, but I draw the line at him!" Natsumi ranted. "You can't say anything about him! Sasuke is my best friend, and I won't let him take any verbal abuse from you!" Natsumi said as she released a breath.

"You have no right to speak to me in that manner" her father seethed. "You are aware that your worth is set by the price on your head. Do you really think that acting like this is befitting of the Nakamaru name?!" he snapped.

"Then maybe I don't want to be a Nakamaru anymore" Natsumi said bringing silence to the room.

"You don't know what you want, you're a child" her father stated.

"For 8 more months" Natsumi replied. "In August I'll be 18 and then you won't have to worry about how my actions reflect on your company because I won't have anything to do with it" Natsumi said.

"You're far too naïve to make that call now especially since you won't be behaving this way in Kyoto" her father replied.

"If you force me to go back to Kyoto with you then I promise, in 8 months I'll be right back here but going by Natsumi Tashio" Natsumi threatened. "But if you don't want to lose the only heiress to the Nakamaru Company, then I suggest you leave now" she said shocking the occupants of the room.

Natsumi was shaking with rage that she didn't see anyone else in the room besides her father, who looked beyond shocked at what his daughter was saying. He was willing to believe that what she said was a bluff, however the look on her face showed she was serious.

"Natsumi" her father said in disbelief. "You can't be serious. You would choose this boy over your future? The company? Your own father?" he asked as he rose from his seat.

'If you live your life according to what others want, you'll never be happy'

Sasori's words ran through Natsumi's mind as if he was speaking right now.

"It's not about a boy. It's about me and the future I want so I can be surrounded by the people I want and be happy" Natsumi replied coldly. "Now leave" she said in a calm voice that struck a nerve with her father.

The man scoffed, shaking his head disapprovingly. He looked about ready to say something else before deciding not to provoke her anymore.

"Very well, we shall leave." Mr. Nakamaru stated, motioning for Mr. Mitaka to make his way to the exit. "But this matter isn't closed for discussion" he said.

There was a long silence after they left. Sasuke kept his eyes trained on Natsumi, unsure of what to do as the girl stared ahead with a blank expression.

"Natsumi" her mother said breaking the silence as she rose from her seat. "Are you alright?" the woman asked moving toward her daughter.

"Mom, not now" Natsumi spoke in a shaky voice. "Can you give me a minute?" Natsumi asked, earning a nod from the woman as both she and Sasuke turned to exit the dining room.

Natsumi's mother made her way toward the stairway while Sasuke stopped in the hall before turning around and reapproaching Natsumi, who now had her head down in her arms.

Sasuke pulled up a chair beside the girl's shaking frame. Natsumi lifted her head, enough to glare at Sasuke through tear filled eyes before dropping her head back down.

"You told your mom to go, not me" Sasuke said as he sat beside Natsumi and folded his arms across his chest.

Natsumi was about to snap back at the Uchiha before a sense of nostalgia came over her and she couldn't help but think about how this moment reminded her of when she sat on that dock with Sasuke. He had told Naruto to go home, prompting the blonde to push her forward. She and Sasuke had exchanged words much like they did now.

'How the tables have turned' Natsumi thought, slightly feeling less upset than earlier.

"You're annoying" Natsumi's muffled voice said making the Uchiha scoff.

"And you're an idiot" Sasuke replied. "You didn't have to stand up for me like that" Sasuke said with a sigh.

"You weren't the only reason I did it" Natsumi corrected him.

"Oh yeah?" Sasuke thought aloud. "Well, if you really care about the whole upper society name thing, maybe you can marry Neji since he's partially at fault here" Sasuke offered.

"Shut up Sasuke, Neji has nothing to do with it either. It was time my dad had someone stand up to him" Natsumi retorted.

"Hn" Sasuke said thoughtfully. "Well, if you want to be Natsumi Uchiha, you're going to have to marry Itachi or Shisui because I wouldn't want to marry someone who makes such brash decisions" Sasuke said, making Natsumi huff to suppress a laugh.

"Like anyone would want to marry a 'pompous arrogant brat' like you" Natsumi said raising her head again as she wiped her face.

"Hey, I thought no one could call me that?" Sasuke asked.

"My dad can't, only I can" Natsumi replied earning an eye roll from Sasuke as a small smile spread across his lips, before Natsumi began to giggle before slowly breaking down into tears.

Natsumi brought her hands to her face as she sobs increased, making Sasuke slightly panic.

"This is so embarrassing; you should've never seen any of that" Natsumi cried into her hands.

Sasuke slowly brought a hand to Natsumi's back, rubbing small soothing circles into the girl's back.

"It's fine" Sasuke said awkwardly as Natsumi continued to cry. Sasuke was not used to comforting people and right now he couldn't feel more out of his element.

"No, it's not" Natsumi argued shaking her head as Sasuke's brows furrowed.

"Natsumi" Sasuke said trying to gain the girl's attention.

Natsumi's hands dropped as she turned to face the Uchiha with tear filled eyes.

"You wouldn't get it. Your family is so perfect compared to mine" Natsumi said as Sasuke stopped rubbing circles.

"You're an idiot if you feel embarrassed by that. No one is perfect and no matter what I find out about you, you'll still be one of my closest friends" the boy said. Natsumi seemed to stop crying for a little bit then proceeded to break out in a fresh batch of tears.

"Why did that make you cry more?!" Sasuke asked as Natsumi brought her hands to her face again.

"Shut up Sasuke!" Natsumi cried as she leaned on the boy's shoulder. "You're my best friend!" she cried more.

Sasuke brought his hand up to squeeze the girl's shoulder.

"That didn't answer my question" Sasuke said as Natsumi continued to sob.

"I said shut up!" Natsumi sobbed to which Sasuke lightly chuckled.

It took a few minutes until Natsumi stopped crying and Sasuke removed his hand so she could sit up to wipe her tear-stained face. Sasuke remained silent while Natsumi tried to gather herself.

"Thank you" Natsumi replied.

"Hn, sure" Sasuke said.

They both remained silent for a while, sitting at the dinner table, until Natsumi decided to speak.

"I'm sorry you had to see all of that" Natsumi replied.

"It's fine" Sasuke stated. "What do you want to do now?" he asked.

Natsumi gave a shrug.

"I should probably talk to my mom about what happened." Natsumi said.

"I should leave then" Sasuke stated. "I don't want to get in the way" Sasuke stated.

"I'm sorry Sasuke. I know you wanted to have dinner with us." Natsumi said sadly.

"You don't have to apologize Natsumi. Are you going to be alright?" Sasuke asked.

"Hn I'll be fine; I just need to speak to my mother about what we are going to do." Natsumi nodded in reply as the Uchiha stood. "What about you? Are you going to be okay for dinner?" she asked, to which he rolled his eyes at.

"Don't worry about me Natsumi, I'm not a child." Sasuke said. "I'm going to call the dobe and eat with him" Sasuke explained.

Natsumi smiled as she gave a nod. She started to walk Sasuke to the door when he suddenly stopped at the home's entrance and spoke with his back still turned to her.

"Natsumi" Sasuke said in serious tone.

"Yeah" Natsumi replied.

"I want you to know that regardless of the outcome; whether you stay in Konoha, or your father takes you back to Kyoto, I'll still be your best friend" Sasuke stated.

Natsumi didn't have a chance to respond before Sasuke made his leave out the door. She stood there stunned until a smile graced her face.

"That's the first time he's called me his best friend" Natsumi thought aloud.

'I'm not going to let him live that one down.' Natsumi thought as her mind drifted to the many people she connected with since moving here. 'There's so much here that I'm not willing to lose and I won't let my father control what I have here anymore!'

'No matter what I'm staying in Konoha!'

Disclaimer: Hey everyone! I know it's been forever since I've updated but things have been more than a little hectic. I'm doing school full time and was working two jobs while tutoring for a while before deciding to give myself more of a break. I've learned a lot about myself and have certain changes in my life to cut out things that were no longer beneficial to me or my mental health. In that time, I also have thought a lot about all of you as I kept receiving notifications on the new readers I was receiving, and it left me in shock. So, I want to thank all of you for the continued support for not only my story but my decision to go back to school. I was truly touched and am proud to report I have been doing pretty good in school. I have a 4.0 which I think in part has to do with setting a standard that is as high as Natsumi or Sasuke and I wouldn't have had that idea without all of you. I know it's been forever, but I will try harder to write more to hopefully get to a somewhat regular update schedule. Until then I thank you for your time and patience and can't wait to see your comments on this new chapter!
