. Wolves .

"In your eyes there's a heavy blue,

One to love and one to lose.

Sweet divine, the heavy truth,

water or wine, don't make me choose.

~x~

I wanna feel the way

That we did that summer night…

Drunk on a feeling

Alone with the stars in the sky.

I've been down the darkest alley,

Saw the dark side of the moon

To get to you, to get to you.

I've looked for love in every stranger,

Took too much to ease the anger,

All for you…"

~ "Wolves" by Selena Gomez & Marshmello

The living room of Lucy's house was in chaos, and Levy sat among it all, looking like a queen of some sort as she sat on the sofa above them all. Natsu could see the boredom on her face, and the frustration that was hidden behind the cover protecting her eyes from view. Gajeel and Lucy had noticed it not too long ago, too, and Gajeel was working exceptionally hard to make sure he used Levy's damn good memory to sort through things.

Levy, being the smart woman she was, had noticed, of course, and smiled widely when he once again demanded she help him figure out what the hell he was looking at.

Natsu was just glad they had a safe place to sort through all the receipts he'd found in the attic. They could have done it at his place, but Wendy knew nothing about what they were up to and they'd all agreed to try and keep it that way for as long as possible. After a call from Mirajane had confirmed Laxus, too, had recalled everything, Levy had admitted that she didn't think there was any way of preventing everyone from remembering. It was like a chain reaction. She'd started it, albeit unintentionally, and now they were just waiting for the others to catch up.

"Ha!" Lucy suddenly cheered, smiling widely as she waved a receipt in the air. "Found it!"

He nearly tripped over himself in his rush to get to her. Natsu slammed down with a wince beside her, and she rolled her eyes playfully before letting him lean in and peer over her shoulder. Gajeel was there an instant later, though he kept a small distance between them. Levy didn't budge, listening closely.

Lucy was warm against his side, and Natsu enjoyed it as he skimmed over the receipt she showed them, even as Lucy read it aloud. It proved that Igneel had been the one to sell Lucy's beloved keys to the museum. None of them had any intention of demanding they be returned, of course. Despite the thieving of some items, they all felt they were fairly secure in the museum. But Lucy had come to him asking to find out more about how they'd been discovered in the hopes of finding answers, and Natsu hadn't had the heart to tell her no.

Of course, after the letter Igneel had left for him, Natsu wasn't keen on finding any physical location. He'd warned them of that when they'd first started searching, and though Gajeel had been pissed that he'd not said anything sooner, none of them could figure out what in particular had been their parents' downfall. So, they'd come to an agreement: they'd use the internet to get as far as they could, and if they came up with no answer, so be it.

Natsu had drilled that into all their heads.

He'd lost his family once, twice, even, for a short while.

Like hell he'd lose any of them again - especially Lucy, who struggled just as badly as he did with the loss some days. It had been what drove her to ask him to help her. He knew it, she knew it, and he was pretty sure everyone else knew it. She just wanted to know if her celestial spirit friends were safe, she'd told him, and as worried as Natsu was about the results of all this…he couldn't not help her. He'd have demanded the same.

Natsu took the receipt from her, running his thumb over the date printed on it. He furrowed his brow. "Hey Gajeel," he said, beckoning him a little closer. Gajeel grumbled at the proximity, and Natsu pretended to be annoyed in a good-natured way. "This was only a few days before they turned up like they did, right?" Dead. He couldn't bring himself to say it aloud.

"Yeah," muttered Gajeel, squinting at the receipt himself with narrowed crimson eyes. He glanced at Lucy. "It doesn't say anythin' about where the keys came from though."

"No, but it's a start for us to start looking at the museum." Lucy was grinning, sparkling like the stars she cared so deeply for. She turned to Natsu. "Why don't we start sorting them by date? Figure out what Igneel and the others brought in when? It looks like most of them were sold to the museum in big groups. I know this date's been on a few other receipts I've looked at."

"And separate the useless receipts from the good ones," added Levy with a heavy sigh. "It might have been an attempt to hide the important ones, but there's a lot of unnecessary ones in there. Gajeel read off a few from grocery stores in the last hour."

"I'll get the box." Natsu clambered to his feet, carefully picking his way through the chaos to find one of the boxes they'd used to bring them all. Levy directed him to a sharpie on her desk, and Natsu scribbled "unimportant" on the box, making Lucy laugh and Gajeel roll his eyes. Natsu couldn't help the small smile that blossomed over his face.

As boring as this was, and as frustrating as it could be, he couldn't help but enjoy the process. He loved simply hanging out with Lucy like this. It reminded him of the old days. And while he couldn't say he really liked hanging out with Gajeel out loud, it did remind him of the old work he'd done, when magic had crackled heat to life in his fingertips. It gave him a purpose he'd not felt he'd had in a long time.

They marked off a few more boxes, organizing them by date, and so began the long process.

They'd been at it for a while when Levy, who'd been simply handing Gajeel receipt after receipt, threw them down and declared, "Let's take a break and get something to eat. I'm starving, I can hear Natsu's stomach from over here, and I'm sure all of your eyes are blinded by receipts."

Gajeel was on his feet almost immediately, seeming relieved, and though Lucy frowned, clearly wanting to keep at it, she nodded. As the others all climbed to his feet, Natsu finished his handful and then joined them. He brushed his hands against each other, adjusted the scarf at his throat, and then grinned impishly at Lucy. She seemed lost in thought and didn't seem to notice.

"Are we going to the bakery?" Natsu decided to ask hopefully. He wouldn't mind one of Lucy's muffins. Everything she made was delicious.

Gajeel scowled at him. "Do you even know another place to eat outside of the bakery? You don't eat anything else half the time."

"I wouldn't eat anywhere other than Lucy's bakery half the time either," Levy chirped, grappling for her cane. Lucy passed it to her, and Levy hummed her gratitude. "It's the best place in town."

"No it's not, you just say that because I own it," Lucy sighed, though a pleased smile rested comfortably on her face. She swept her hair over her shoulder. "And if that's where you want to go, it'll be on the house of course."

Gajeel didn't protest after that.

The rumbling purr radiated through his chest and Natsu found it incredibly comforting. He was lying quietly on the couch in the living room of the home he shared with his cousins, and Happy had come to perch on his chest. His tail was wrapped neatly over his paws, his eyes slitted as he rested there comfortably. Natsu ran his hand over Happy's back with a heavy sigh, memories of another version of his little buddy playing in his head. He wondered if this was the same Happy - how that even worked. Could it be the same Happy? He certainly behaved like the other Happy sometimes. His thieving of fish whenever they tried to cook it knew no bounds.

Outside of a few things regarding Lucy, it was what bugged him most about this world and life.

He missed the Happy he remembered. He cared for this one, of course, but it wasn't the same.

"Natsu?"

Natsu glanced over, fingers buried in Happy's fur. Wendy hovered in the doorway. Her brow was furrowed, Charle gathered close to her chest. The white cat was rumbling unhappily, tail flicking back and forth as she glared at them. She'd not dare lay a claw on Wendy though. The cats had to have had something from their last life. There was no other explanation when it came to Charle.

"What's up, Wendy?" Natsu asked, carefully moving Happy and rocking up to prop himself on his elbows. It was late, and she had school in the morning. A glance at the clock made him wince. It was really late. Her pajamas told him she'd likely been asleep until now. Natsu hoped he'd not woken her up

Wendy faltered, her arms tightening around Charle. After a moment, she hedged her way over, dropping to sit beside Natsu on the couch when he'd sat up entirely. She petted Charle for a couple moments and then said shakily, "I…I had a nightmare."

Natsu's heart clenched in his chest. No. "What about?" he asked, feigning nonchalance.

"Dragons," she whispered. Tears gathered in her eyes and her breath hitched. "There were so many dragons. They were everywhere. And people were-" She cut off, voice cracking, and Charle squirmed in her arms uncomfortably, nearly crushed by Wendy's white-knuckled grip.

Natsu moved closer, hooking an arm around his young cousin's shoulders. He did best to keep his feelings about what was happening hidden as he murmured, "Hey, that's not….that didn't really happen." The lie was heavy on his tongue. As far as he knew, it was, but Wendy didn't need to know that. "Right? I mean, I haven't seen any dragons around, have you?"

"No," she admitted in a whisper. "But it felt real."

"Nightmares always feel real. Ask Lucy." He wished she was here right now. Lucy would have had a lot of good answers to help Wendy feel better. He tightened his arm around Wendy in a small hug. "You're safe though. You know that, right?"

"Yeah." Wendy finally gave a small smile, glancing at him. "I know." She heaved a small sigh as they sat together in silence. Wendy leaned heavily into him, taking comfort in the small hug he'd given her. Finally, she asked, "Is Lucy feeling any better now? She's been over more."

Natsu flashed a small grin. "Yeah, I think so. She said the nightmares have eased up." And they had since she'd remembered. As much as he'd hated the idea for so long of her being lost in the twisting confusion of memories that had engulfed her, she'd stopped having nearly as many nightmares. She'd put some lost weight back on, slept better, and even seemed to have regained some confidence in herself. Natsu got the feeling there were some things she hadn't been willing to tell him just yet, but she certainly looked like she felt better.

"Maybe mine will stop soon then." Wendy beamed at the idea.

Natsu paused, concerned as he looked at her with a frown. "Have you been having a lot of nightmares, Wendy?"

"More than I used to." She scowled at the thought. "Not every night, and not always as bad as tonight. Maybe once or twice a week. Tonight was the worst one so far. Most of the time I just feel sad or lost."

Natsu recalled his own dreams, of the starlit girl he'd felt so strongly for before knowing the truth behind everything. Many of the dreams he'd had throughout time had been more emotionally driven than actually seeing anything. Determined to try and get Wendy to stop thinking about it in case it made it worse for her, he suddenly tickled her, and she squealed and squirmed away almost immediately.

"Natsu!" she shrieked as Charle fled with Happy, both looking mildly annoyed with what was happening.

Natsu cackled as she flew from the couch, chasing after her. She fled for the kitchen, where her smaller form would give her the advantage to get away, and Natsu winced when he heard a loud sound from above, where Gajeel was probably trying to sleep. Natsu ignored it.

Wendy was more important right now.

Maybe it was Wendy bringing up old memories, but Natsu woke up the next morning with a heavy heart and the smell of starlight thick in his nose. It had him immediately seeking out Lucy after getting dressed and walking Wendy, who looked like she felt a lot better after the night before, to school. She seemed none the wiser about the reality of their world, for which Natsu was grateful. He did want advice on the matter though.

It was still early, so the place wasn't yet open, but he tried the door anyway. Lucy usually came in earlier than necessary when she opened, and often left the door open for him. He was relieved to find that it was just that: unlocked.

Natsu glanced around as he entered, searching for that familiar golden head of hair. Lucy wasn't out in the lobby, which had already been set up for the day. Everything was neatly arranged and clean, the tables shining. Fresh goods had already been put on display. He eyed them thoughtfully as he slid behind the counter without a care, meandering back towards the kitchen and her office. Lucy would be in either place.

A shriek made him jump, and he whipped his head around towards a specific door.

Definitely the kitchen.

Sure enough, he found his friend there. She was swearing loudly, shaking out a hand as she dropped a pan of freshly baked croissants on the nearest surface, her face twisted with agitation and pain. Mirajane, who stood in the kitchen with her, was grinning as she scolded, "I told you to watch your arm!"

Lucy glared at her, eyes narrowing. "I was," she insisted, hastily walking to the sink to run some water over the painful burn. Natsu's lips twitched, though he flexed his fingers wistfully. In another life, he'd never known the pain of burns. Now, he got them regularly, too impatient to wait for something to cool down.

Mirajane caught sight of him first and grinned. "Hi, Natsu," she chirped, and Natsu gave her a playful mocking salute as Lucy immediately whipped her head around, already glaring at him.

"Don't," she said darkly. "Not even a word."

"I didn't even open my mouth," he protested, even as a smile appeared. He couldn't help himself. Lucy was hilarious when she was in such a state, though he couldn't say that he was happy she'd hurt herself by accident. Natsu wandered over to where she stood by the sink. He held out his hand, and with a hint of a pout, Lucy put her hand in his. He studied the burn closely, old knowledge he'd never learned in this life spilling from his lips. "It'll be fine. S'not barely even a first degree burn. Just be careful from now on."

Lucy snatched her hand back, giving him a half-hearted glare. "Thanks," she mumbled regardless, turning to make sure the croissants she'd made were okay. "Why are you here this early? You usually take another half-hour to get in."

"I walked Wendy to school," he said carefully, leaning back on the counter. He didn't necessarily want to tell her in front of Mirajane that he'd dreamt of another Lucy, one who'd smiled and fondly pressed her fingers to his cheek, leaving trails of heat along his flesh. Mirajane would leap on that like a tiger. "Figured I'd come by since it wasn't that far."

"Natsu," Lucy said with exasperation, "the school Wendy goes to is literally a forty-five minute walk from here, and you don't drive."

"It's not cold." He shrugged, not at all concerned that he'd walked the entire way to the bakery. He'd have to look into convincing someone to give him a ride home later in the day though. Walking home alone wasn't nearly as fun as walking to where Lucy was. "Did you get the-"

"Yes, I've already set aside some of those pastries you like." Lucy's eyes gleamed with laughter as she pointed to where a package waited nearby. He immediately meandered over to grab it, eyes gleaming excitedly. He loved the pastries and drinks from Lucy's bakery. They were his favorite. He didn't hesitate to start eating one, happily devouring it in merely a few bites.

It was after a few moments that he remembered the reason he'd craved Lucy's company. The joy the pastry had brought him faded and he grew solemn. Memories of another Lucy were heavy in his mind, even as this one smiled warmly albeit a bit sadly when she saw the familiar look in his eyes. She knew when he struggled with separating one from the other, and he appreciated that she admitted to having similar times.

To try and distract himself, he brought up another matter. He finished the pastry first, mindlessly wiping his fingers on a paper towel that Mirajane passed him. Finally, he admitted quietly to them, "Wendy's going to remember soon, I think." They stopped what they were doing to look at him. He stared hard at nothing in particular - the stove, the wall, the floor. "She came out in the middle of the night, talking about nightmares. She said there were a ton of dragons, killing people."

Mirajane and Lucy both flinched as if someone had struck them. Mirajane pressed her lips into a hard line, and Lucy rolled the tension from her shoulders. Carefully, Mirajane said as she reached for a hand towel to start wiping things down, "She doesn't remember yet though?"

"No. She said she's had a couple of dreams, but nothing like that one before." Natsu's stomach twisted. "I don't want her to remember."

"I don't think we can stop it," Lucy said quietly, and his gaze shifted to hers. He'd not wanted Lucy to remember either, even if it meant she understood him better now. Even if they were both on even ground, though they each seemed to prefer a different way of living than the other. He longed to go back to a life of magic and chaos. Lucy preferred this one, of order and simplicity, though he knew she was nearly rabid in her desire to know what had happened to the magic of the world and what might have been the fate of her spirits.

It wasn't fun, remembering another life. Remembering the bits and pieces of the current one you should have appreciated more when you had the chance.

Lucy swept a lock of hair behind her ear, averting her gaze in favor of working on some dough she'd been prepping before burning herself. She began to knead at it, her eyes locked on her work as she continued, "It's…we're all going to remember in the end. How can we not? People crave good things, good memories. Bad memories might come with those good, but we can't help ourselves. Everyone wants good memories. Whether they be from another life or this one, we want them. Seek them. Wendy might be actively recalling those bad memories, but I'm sure it's because she's subconsciously seeking out the good ones. She can't remember a good dragon without remembering all the bad ones, right?

"Besides, I don't know about everyone else who remembers, but I won't let myself forget those I have yet to find, and if suffering with bad memories means I can find them, then so be it."

Mirajane hummed in quiet agreement, but Natsu remained silent. He didn't necessarily disagree with Lucy. In fact, he agreed full-heartedly. But there was something about the way she said it. It made him uneasy, that tone, the way she remained focused on her work as she said it.

Natsu glanced at Mirajane, seeking her opinion, but she didn't seem to have noticed. His lips pressed into a hard line, he leaned back, reaching for another pastry. "Some people won't be found, Luce. Look at Igneel and his siblings. They're gone." He knew something to do with the search for magic had killed them, but he wasn't inclined to continue that search. Igneel had warned him against it via letter. Even if Igneel was gone, he trusted Igneel's word.

"Maybe it's because people haven't looked hard enough." Lucy's words were somewhat sharp, and even Mirajane stopped now to study her, concerned. But Lucy ignored them both, clearly feeling their worried looks on her back as she moved on, changing topics. "Mira, could you take that finished batch out. Natsu can help you put them in the display cabinet."

Natsu exchanged a look with Mirajane. Mirajane shrugged, grabbing the batch, and Natsu murmured an agreement to do as Lucy had requested. He trailed after Mirajane, following her with the intent of opening his mouth to say something about what had just happened.

Mirajane beat him to it.

"When I remembered my old life," Mirajane said as she began stuffing the baked goods into their place, letting Natsu help after he'd slid gloves on. "I cried. I cried for a long time. I cried over what we'd lost, the people I missed, and the ones I hadn't found. I did look. For a while. It's how I found Laxus." Her eyes warmed at the thought of her boyfriend, who Natsu recalled had remembered recently, too. "I remembered before my siblings did, too, you know. I cried for them, because I missed them even as they stood in front of me."

Natsu's stomach twisted as he recalled his own thoughts of Lucy. "I still feel like that with people sometimes." Mostly Lucy, though.

"It's hard to push those thoughts out of your head." Mirajane cast him a warm smile, sympathetic. "Especially on days when your mind gets mixed up, right?" Natsu nodded. Mirajane returned her attention to what she was doing, and the pair fell quiet for a few moments.

Natsu realized Mirajane's silence was meant to prompt him into voicing his thoughts when they finished. He couldn't help but do so. "Lucy's really, really worried about the spirits."

"I don't blame her. They were very good friends of hers. And with a lack of magic in the world, who knows where they are or if they're even alive." Mirajane's blue eyes flickered warily as she considered the matter. "Are you helping her search for them?"

"Yeah." Natsu yanked the gloves from his hand and ran a hand through his hair. "We didn't want her to do it alone. Me, Gajeel, and Levy. We were gonna ask Sting, but…"

"He doesn't remember," Mirajane recalled softly. Natsu shook his head. He'd checked with his cousin, who he'd kept in contact with despite not speaking with him or seeing him very often. Sting apparently still chatted with Rogue relatively often, and Natsu got the feeling Rogue knew things, too. Likely remembered more than they did. Sting had even mentioned some interest in moving out of Magnolia, closer to Rogue. Natsu hoped he didn't, wondering what the effect would be if Yukino remembered.

"I just…" Natsu glanced over his shoulder, wondering if Lucy was eavesdropping. He hoped she wasn't. He didn't think she was, for he could hear some humming coming from the kitchen. Deeming it safe enough, he quickly explained, "Our parents died looking for magic, you know. It was in a letter Igneel hid for me, the one that I found with my scarf." He fondly caressed the scarf he wore every day now. It often earned him weird looks, but he didn't care. He loved it, yet…at the same time, it wasn't his original scarf, and as Natsu found himself more inclined towards his past life, it made it difficult. "I'm worried about what will happen to Lucy. If she keeps pushing this hard. Igneel made it sound like magic itself might have been the reason. But there really isn't magic that we can find like we used to. Whatever happened to it-"

"It's likely bad things will come out of it," finished Mirajane, and Natsu nodded, furrowing his brow. "And you're worried that what happened to Igneel will happen to Lucy."

"It's not that I don't want her to find answers. I want answers, too." Natsu scowled at the mere thought of never understanding fully what had happened to Igneel. "But not if it's going to hurt anyone."

Mirajane's blue eyes softened and she paused to squeeze his shoulder. She rose to her feet, brushing herself off. "I'll tell you what. Laxus has connections with a lot of people, and I know he's been more obsessive about looking into things than I would like. If you can maybe summarize your own search…maybe we can combine it all. I bet Levy's got a good collection. Erza, too. There's a lot of us that have looked into things. If we combine our efforts, maybe something good will come of it without putting us in danger."

Natsu stared at Mirajane for a long moment, caught off guard. He'd not thought about what others might have found. "I'll…ask Levy, when we see her. And I'll see if she knows how to get a hold of Erza. She avoids old things and likes her new life better. Gray, too. But they'll help. Gray will, at least, when he gets back."

"Good." Mirajane winked. "I'll start asking around, too. Just make sure you remind Lucy she's not alone in all of this. None of us are. There's a lot of us who remember what we had, Natsu. Maybe it hurts. But at least we're in it together."

"I don't know why I have to be here," grumbled Natsu, impatient. He kept glancing at the clock, getting antsy the longer he was here. He'd convinced Lucy that it would be good for them to do something together - simply as friends, for the time being. He wasn't sure where they'd go from there, but friends came first. So, they'd agreed to meet up for a walk around Magnolia, complete with the hot chocolate he liked from her bakery. Lucy had said she'd meet him outside. And if he didn't leave soon, he'd be late.

Lucy didn't like it when he was late.

"Because you and Mirajane were the ones who came up with this idea," retorted Levy from where she was leaning against the desk. They were in her office, and Gajeel had taken a seat at her desk, typing away on his laptop. His red eyes remained locked on the screen, though they darted to Levy when she spoke. "A good idea," added Levy thoughtfully. "I don't know why I didn't think of it, actually."

Natsu simply pouted and glanced at his phone. Lucy had texted, reminded him to be there in thirty minutes. "Levy," he whined, "I have to go!"

"Hold on, would ya?" Gajeel sat back then, eyeing the list he'd compiled of names. "Right. So I've got a list of people who we've found who remember, people we've found who don't remember, people we've found who are dead, and a list of people to watch out for."

"Zeref?" checked Natsu, stomach twisting at the mere thought of running into Zeref. He'd not shown up since thieving from the museum, and the police were still investigating his whereabouts after Levy had given them a description "anonymously passed onto her." They'd not yet come back with any information. Levy wasn't convinced they would, apparently.

"Zeref," confirmed Gajeel, "and Acnologia."

Natsu snapped his attention away from his phone. "Wait, you think he's gonna show up, too?"

Gajeel shrugged. "Just because he hasn't yet doesn't mean he won't." He snapped his laptop shut, casting Levy another quick look. She looked grim at the thought, and Natsu thought there was a hint of a haunted look that flashed over his face. As if he was remembering things he didn't want to remember.

The look vanished as quickly as it had come, however, and Gajeel shook it off. He cast Natsu an irritable glare. "All the numbers we have are in, s'up to you to start giving people the link so they can add things."

"I'll pass it onto Lucy, and she can help, too," said Natsu, rocking to his feet happily. He checked his phone one final time before pocketing it, bouncing a little. He was excited. It had taken a lot of coaxing to get Lucy to accompany him on something like this. She was so desperate to find her celestial friends that she'd thrown herself into it lately, and hadn't wanted to stop when she wasn't working. Convincing her to get some sleep, even, was difficult. "Gray, too. And next time Erza comes by, I'll get her stuff, and she'll have Jellal's-"

"I've already got his," said Levy, holding up her own phone. "And Meredy's. I got them when they broke in." She paused, and then furrowed her brow slightly, reaching up to adjust the cloth protecting her eyes. "Come to think of it, a lot of people like to break in here. Maybe we ought to increase security…"

Natsu didn't respond. He left them to their thoughts on the matter and scurried from the room, already texting Lucy that he was on his way from the museum and that he'd be there shortly. His smile grew when she answered that she'd wait outside for him. Natsu put his phone away again and did a quick, casual sweep of the museum lobby, where the keys usually resided within their case alongside half of the other items that had once belonged to people of lives long gone.

There were only a handful of people. It was the middle of the week, during a workday, so it wasn't unusual for there to be so few people.

What was unusual was the young lady standing in front of a case Natsu visited fairly often himself. It was a larger display case, built into a section of wall, containing a large tattered orange flag bearing an emblem that had once marked each and every one of the guild's members. His heart ached at the memory of his own guild emblem.

She looked like no more than a girl, really. She was small in height and stature, her slim hands casually clasped behind her back. It had been her long pale blonde hair that had initially drew his attention, and as if feeling his gaze on her, she glanced over her shoulder.

Natsu stopped dead in his tracks, stomach twisting so violently he thought he'd be sick.

He knew her on sight. Those green eyes, gleaming with grief and surprise, were impossible to forget. And clearly, the sentiment was returned, for a smile blossomed over her face. She turned to face him entirely, straightening her sleek black jacket and greeting, "It's been some time, Natsu."

Natsu swallowed thickly and greeted faintly in return, recalling the last time he'd seen her, "Hey, Mavis."
