Just a tiny, little scene I couldn't get out of my head. Enjoy!
Paperweight
He's always liked mornings. Well, those that don't start with an alarm, as only few things compare to that moment of feeling the first rays of sunlight on his skin and opening his eyes just to close them again, allowing himself to bask in the serenity of the here and now while the waves of the pacific purr in the background…
But today it's neither the sun nor the ocean that's waking him up.
His eyes flutter open at the sensation of a pair of soft lips brushing over his own…
"Good morning," she whispers, greeting him with a smile and it almost seems too good to be true…
"Is this a dream?" He mumbles.
A playful jab to his ribs lets him know it's not. Juliet Higgins actually spent the night with him.
"Sorry," he laughs, wrapping his arm around her waist to bring them closer together. "I'm just a little surprised."
"Surprised?" She questions. "You couldn't have been that drunk…"
He studies her, she's wearing his shirt from the night before, her hair messy and a gleam in her eyes, but not a hint of the doubt or awkwardness he expected…
"Oh, I do remember how we got here," he smirks, emphasizing his words with a suggestive look.
"But?" She asks, ignoring the innuendo.
He sighs, "Well, I kinda thought I'd wake up alone and would have to track you down to convince you that last night wasn't a mistake. I had a whole speech planned…"
"You thought I'd regret this?" There's the serious look he anticipated.
"No, but I though you'd get all up into your head and freak out about how this changes things…"
"Sounds like you're the one who's overthinking this, a whole speech?" She cups his jaw, tracing his cheekbone with her thumb before she drops her hand down to his chest.
"How was I supposed to know that you'd suddenly change your MO?" He defends himself, still genuinely taken aback by her reaction (or well, lack thereof).
"You're right, last night changed our relationship in fundamental ways and we will have to discuss them, but someone very wise once told me that I should follow my heart and I guess I finally listened."
"Ok, first I'm right and then you call me wise. You sure you didn't hit your head? Last night was pretty intense…" he teases, earning an overtly feigned eyeroll in return.
"Magnum, I swear…"
"Fine, I'll stop. But it was a good speech, you're missing out…." he runs his fingers through her hair and tucks a stray curl back behind her ear. "There were metaphors and all…" he follows the gesture with a languid kiss that eventually melts into a second, and third…
"You can always save it for our first fight…" she jokes as they break apart.
He opens is mouth to reply, but then dismisses the thought and continues where they left oft. Smiling against her lips as she settles even deeper into his embrace – sharing a silent understanding that they'd have plenty of opportunities to dissect and maybe even question their new relationship but right now they were just happy to be in it, and worrying was just a waste of time.
That's it. Short but (hopefully) sweet!
I'm also posting these on AO3 (I'm a_complex_kid on there) and updates will probably only be published there from now on - unless there's a demand here.
Love,
Laura
