this fic is the rewritten version of 'in memoriam'; the old version is still posted, because there's enough changes that I didn't want to just edit it
I changed added some plot details and changed it around so the OC isn't quite so edgy, but it's the same idea, at its core
anyway:
this is an OC-Insert fic, wherein - and this is important - the OC is reborn as Naruto's twin, and because of this, Naruto dies
so... uh... don't expect jinchuuriki brothers ;,D
and as for WARNINGS:
most chapters will have depressive or self-deprecating notes and whatnot, but this chapter specifically describes how to protagonist dies via drowning, so if that makes you uncomfortable... skip it, I suppose
kneeways, this'll be updated on Saturdays or Sundays
(and i know the chapter is short. they won't be after this intro chapter.)
hope you enjoy!
His heart beat rapidly within his chest, and his eyes drifted towards a blurry bundle of yellow. The winds whistled, and the sound of rolling tides filled the air.
(He propelled himself upwards, head breaking through the water. His inhale was cut short when he dipped back under, a choking sound escaping his throat as liquid slipped through his lips.)
A curtain of red brushed against his skin, soft murmurs mingling with the sound of crashing waves. His skin remained inexplicably dry.
(His sputtering tempered into a strangled whine, and his eyes watered as murky water was forced into his nostrils.)
A figure with a golden halo appeared, bringing with it the sound of a passing breeze.
(His limbs, which had been thrashing so wildly only moments prior, began to jerk awkwardly before halting their movement altogether. His muscles became locked in place, and his chest felt unbearably tight.)
The sound of burning wood twisted into existence, and soft pattering came to a stumbling stop. The maelstrom, the breeze, and the burning wood flickered away following the sound of clinking metal.
(Dark splotches filled his blurred vision, sobs catching in his throat as his burning lungs screamed out for air that he couldn't provide.)
Minutes passed before he was torn away from the gentle waves, and his body - skineyesmuscles lungs- burst into flame. His screams, ripped from his throat, joined the cacophony of agony that rang through the air.
(His lips parted of their own accord, and the taste of salt, spawned from his tears, settled upon his tongue.)
The waves trembled, the wind swooped, and the maelstrom sputtered. The oppressive flames roared , swallowing the other sounds, before rapidly fading into a mere spark.
(His body drifted downwards, his eyes slipped shut, and after a last, water-filled breath, his heart stuttered to a stop.)
Rei's mind was populated by wispy images and unintelligible murmurs for a long while. His thoughts drifted by lazily, only to slip from his grasp the moment he reached out, leaving nothing but the frustrating impression that something was wrong .
(And he knew, somewhere in the back of his mind, that he shouldn't have even known that anything was out of the ordinary in the first place.)
What he could focus on were the Masks. Blurs of colors that would drift by, lively songs trailing behind them.
When the silver-haired Mask appeared, the sound of rumbling thunder would follow; when the ponytail Mask moved past his crib, he heard a clink of thin metal; when the spiky-haired Mask slipped by, a blade would slice through the air.
Aside from their sounds, they were all quiet - but not enough to seem inhuman. Ponytail, for one, would hum softly as they rocked him back and forth, and every now and then, he'd hear them playing with something metallic. Spikes was quieter, but would always murmur to him as he slipped into unconsciousness, and was the first to mention Rei by name. Silver was the tensest, always standing as stiff as a board and barely letting a sound slip past their lips, though moving with unexpected care, as if afraid one wrong movement would cause Rei to shatter.
It was odd, he thought, but not unpleasant.
Not until he was several months old, wisps of hair rising on the back of his neck as he watched the tub's water level rise; until his gut began to curl with dread before it transformed into something like full-blown nausea; until he was lowered into the water, and he jerked downwards, head dunking underwater, until—

—his chest tightened, his head spun, and below, an unfamiliar reflection trembled.
like before, end notes will summarize each chapter
CH1:
Rei dies in his previous life (our world) via drowning, and is reborn as Naruto's twin. He lives, but Naruto dies (and will stay very dead). He remembers his past life (or at least parts of it) when he's a few months old.
