Chapter 16 - Calm Before the Storm

Tokoyami glanced out the window overlooking the clouds as the Gulfstream G550 sped over billowing cloudscape. All Might was of course sleeping, though the teen thought the pro-hero was used to flying at this point. He'd visited Rocky in the hospital, it would have been incredibly callous not to, especially since he knew Midoriya had been unable to.

"You seem lost in thought young Tokoyami," said All Might suddenly, surprising him.

"I apologize, I thought you were asleep. I'm a little concerned, and also wondering why you didn't invite Midoriya, considering he is your successor?" Tokoyami asked curiously.

"I think you can figure out why, you have enough of the pieces to deduce the rest of it," All Might replied.

"You wouldn't leave Midoriya on his own if you had a choice right now, and given Hawks has also been absent, he's likely in Hawks' care," Tokoyami considered what he knew, "However you'd be frantic with worry if you didn't know Midoriya's health especially right now."

"What makes you think I'm not worried?" Toshinori Yagi replied evenly, "They knew right where to hit young Midoriya..."

"I may be off base, but it would be logical to assume he's on I-Island, given you'd want to be able to protect him," Tokoyami guessed.

"Yes, along with Hawks and young Mineta," the hero sighed, "The reports I've gotten from Hawks concerning young Midoriya's emotional state are not promising."

"I'd be shocked if they were," Tokoyami answered, "He's had no real friends since pre-school, kindergarten at the latest. He's only just started making friends again since starting U.A."

"I thought he and young Bakugo were friends," All Might replied in shock.

"They were friends once, but from what I could piece together that friendship had fallen apart, he likely hung around Bakugo for his own safety," Tokoyami pointed out, "Not to say they haven't been starting to make attempts to piece that friendship back together, but it is going to take a lot of work in my opinion."

"I didn't know you were that observant," All Might commented.

"I'm not, but I did have Midoriya as a roommate during my internship," Tokoyami replied, "That and Hawks pulled me aside to talk to me about his suspicions that Midoriya had been at the very least psychologically and emotionally abused, possibly physically abused. That and that exam he was given proved that he had been physically abused."

"His mother would never..." All Might started, 'Or would she? I didn't really get to meet her...'

"Hawks wouldn't have let him stay with his mother if he suspected her," Tokoyami pointed out putting All Might's unvoiced worry at ease, "He believed Midoriya was no longer in the abusive environment, just I needed to be patient with him."

"Makes sense," All Might replied, "So did you bring your hero costume?"

"Of course."

"We're coming up on I-Island..." came the loudspeaker.

"This is going to be exhausting," said All Might as he started to assume him muscle form, "I'm going to have to maintain my muscle form constantly."

I-Island Central Plaza:

Tokoyami had watched the mob that swarmed All Might as soon as they realized the Hero was there and after that delay with getting to their hotel and returning to the plaza, he listened with bemusement about the fact they may end up being late. That's when he saw her, an angel bouncing on what looked to be some sort of pogo-stick.

"Hey Uncle Might, it's so good to see you!" she called out as she jumped into All Might's arms.

"Melissa, my how you've grown, I almost didn't recognize you!"

"It's been like forever," she said as All Might set her down, "I met some of your other students."

"How's young Midoriya?"

"He's with my dad, they are currently finishing up fine-tuning some modifications to his suit," she answered,"So who is?"

"Where are my manners? Melissa, meet Fumikage Tokoyami, she's my friend Dave's daughter," All Might laughed.

"Interesting suit, extremely plain, only support items I'm seeing are the goggles, though I'm guessing you're also apprenticing under Hawks," Melissa felt the material of the costume, "What's your quirk?"

"Dark Shadow," Tokoyami answered letting Dark Shadow manifest.

"Smooth going lover-boy," commented Dark Shadow.

"Cool so your quirk is a cross between a manifestation and a familiar, that would explain the lack of support items."

"How so?" he asked as Dark Shadow effectively faded away.

"Support items would generally slow you down, though I'd recommend some Kevlar eventually, since you are probably weak at hand to hand."

"I have a special move to shore up that weakness, though you are right I probably will want to have Kevlar or some other light armor eventually," he acknowledged as the three of them walked towards a tall building in the center of the island.

David Shield's Lab:

"Okay that should do it for those clodhoppers you call shoes," David Shields told Midoriya as the boy started putting them on.

"Thanks, they don't look that different but..."

"I primarily reinforced the shock absorbers, there wasn't much else for me to do, at least right now, because you want the added weight," commented David, "Especially since you can only use a limited percentage of your quirk. Eventually you should want to replace them with a lighter alloy, but given that we don't know how much taller you're going to get, it's more practical for the current design."

"And my suit won't stick to Minoru's quirk?"

"No, which makes sense given Mineta's quirk is best utilized as a capture or support quirk."

"Thanks, it's a real honor having..."

"Midoriya, you don't need to thank me, now you probably won't need the Mark I gauntlets on I-Island, but it's good that you keep wearing the Melissa's prototype," David considered the boy that he had gotten to know over the course of a week, 'In some ways he reminds me of All Might, but he's extremely timid at times, he is charismatic in his own way, those readings from his quirk factor though, that amount of raw power is insane.'

"So the mini-project is finished up?" asked Sam.

"Sam we were getting paid for this work, and even if we weren't, this is important," replied David, before Sam could respond the door opened and David Shields was face to face with a friend he hadn't seen in years.

I-Expo Exhibits:

"Most of these support items are based off my dad's inventions," Melissa explained to Tokoyami and Midoriya.

"They are very impressive," Tokoyami commented, "I take it you are an inventor also?"

"Yeah, though I've got a long way to go," she replied modestly.

"There is supposed to be a dinner this evening, I was wondering..." the self described Edgelord was stumbling over his words.

"Fumikage Tokoyami, are you trying to ask me out?"

"I apologize for sounding presumptuous," he looked down at the ground.

"Well I don't have anyone else asking and I was already going to be attending," she looked thoughtful, "So sure, I don't see why not."

'Huh?!' though Midoriya, 'Not that I'm not happy for Tokoyami, but shouldn't he be asking her dad before asking her out?'

"Eh looks like you're having fun Deku," came a voice behind them.

"Uraraka what are you doing here, I thought you were..."

"It's 11:45 Midoriya, we're supposed to meet up for lunch remember..." came another voice.

"Jiro!"

"To be fair, didn't we talk about that with Mineta yesterday, not Deku," Uraraka pointed out, "we better be there cause Bakugo wanted to check out some exhibit later."

"Oh you mean the one where you destroy a bunch of robots," Midoriya shrugged, "Didn't Timothy run that a few days ago."

"Yeah he didn't too bad, all things considered," Melissa thought about it for a moment, anyways let's get something to eat.

'Who is Timothy?' thought Tokoyami, Uraraka, and Jiro.

Outdoor Cafe:

"Man Mineta, how'd you get so lucky?" whined Kaminari in a waiter's outfit.

"Dude, I would rather have been having to wait tables if it would bring..."

"Sorry dude, I didn't think," said Kaminari sounding more subdued, "Well looks like they found them."

"Hey Tokoyami, how was your flight here?" Kirishima asked

"Uneventful, when did you arrive?"

"The day before yesterday in the evening what was it 9:00 PM?"

"Moron, it was 8:45 PM," Bakugo corrected him, "Deku and Grape Runt have been here for the whole week."

Kaminari started getting people's orders for drinks when Ida showed up.

Before Ida could open his mouth Bakugo shot him a look, "Okay I assume there is an explanation then as to why Midoriya and Mineta are here?"

"Moron, it's where they stashed the two of them," Bakugo rolled his eyes.

As they got their food and started eating Midoriya introduced Melissa to his classmates, then he realized something. "Mineta, have you seen Hawks around?"

"He was going to call and check up on Rocky as well if there had been any word on you know," Mineta shrugged.

"You all brought formal wear right?" asked Ida.

"Well I don't know about anyone else, but Minoru and I did. However, Tokoyami and I could probably get away with wearing our hero costumes," Midoriya rubbed the back of his head.

"How the hell can... Oh," Bakugo trailed off, "The provisional licenses."

"I think from a combat standpoint you'll be able to get yours soon enough," Tokoyami commented, "though from what I understand, you may have some trouble with the rescue portion."

"What was that bird brain?"

Midoriya groaned, 'Count on Kacchan to want to fight about something.'

Midoriya and Mineta's Hotel Room:

"Hey Midoriya what's wrong," Mineta asked.

"Mineta you remember when I had that feeling in that hallway at school?"

"How could I forget? It really creeped me out."

"Well, I'm kinda feeling uneasy," said Midoriya as he started to tie his bow tie.

"Dude, it's freakin I-Island..." Mineta started, then stopped, "You have that support item?"

"Yeah..."

"Good, just in case," Mineta sighed, "And Ida will be blasting us for being late..."

Minoru Mineta's Journal:

Little did I know, is that Izzy's feeling were a prelude of what was to come, we expected it just to be a classy dinner with boring speeches. It would turn into an actual battle, we would discover that night just why nobody had been able to find Inko Midoriya's killer...

Notes:

Thought I would end the chapter there, trying to figure out how to approach next chapter to be perfectly honest, with Tokoyami in play there would be some adjustments I have to think of.

Most of the interactions between students went down like canon except Tokoyami is now present and Bakugo was calmer in his interactions (partially because of Inko's death).
