Chapter 23: Gathering Pieces
Aizawa's Apartment: (2:00 AM)
Aizawa, wrote out instructions regarding the cat food that Hizashi and Nemuri would be feeding his little 'darlings', and glanced at the clock, 'Okay should be daylight over there.' He figured there would be another villain attack and they really needed a total outsider, someone he knew wouldn't be working with villains, 'Hopefully he can take some time off and get here, in time,' he picked up the phone and dialed a number he hadn't called in a while.
"Hello?" came a groggy voice.
"You seem awfully out of it, given what time it is over there..."
"You realize it is 2 AM..."
"Wait you're in Japan?"
"Yeah, I'll be here for a few weeks anyways, I guess this isn't a social call, cause it wouldn't be rational..."
"You guessed right, I have a favor I'd like to call in..."
"Is this something I've got to clear with the Cap'n?"
"In this case no, I take it you've heard about USJ, I realize you've been in the States?"
"Yeah, also heard about one of your student's family getting wiped out, Izuku Midoriya wasn't it? Anyways I kinda got roped into delivering a copy of our investigation in the US, why?"
"Another one of my students was attacked in a shopping mall by one of the same villains from USJ..."
"Okay what do you want me to do?" the voice turned serious, "Also why shouldn't I tell the Cap'n?"
"I need you to tail us when we go to summer camp and then keep out of sight..."
"Hold on, I'm not a stalker..."
"I'll get you a new hoodie..."
"You mean it?"
"Yes, now here's the mission, I need you to nearby in case of a villain attack."
"Why me? Not that I'm not happy to help but..."
"Because you're an outsider, that given your actions in the Naruhata Lock-down, and my suspicions that the Villain who orchestrated the attacks on USJ is tied to the events from that other villain attack, you can be trusted on this..."
"That's nice and all, but I'm not stalking you guys, how about you give me a legitimate reason for being on site? One that would hide me in plain sight."
"Like what?"
"Do you have a bus driver?"
Aizawa opened his mouth to object and then paused, 'It would be the perfect way to hide him in plain sight," he grinned slightly, "When did you learn to drive a bus?"
"Part of working for Captain Celebrity, I kind of had to also learn to drive a bus, you know how he can be. Anyways, I will let the Cap'n know that you're borrowing me for a few weeks, we both kind of owe you after the Sky Egg incident."
"Understood, meet me at U.A. around 6 AM, there is a student I need to introduce you to, otherwise it wouldn't surprise me if he blew your cover."
"Huh?!"
U.A. High School - Dorm Commons Area: (6:00 AM)
Izuku Midoriya had packed for the summer camp already and had planned on being up at 7:00 AM with plenty of time to get ready for the bus departure, but for some reason Mr. Aizawa had called him at 4:30 in the morning. As it was, he was trying to doze on the couch when someone shook him on the shoulder, waking him up with a start. "I'm up, I'm up!"
"Jeez, he's going to turn into you Eraser, you should have let him sleep," came a voice off to the side, "I really doubt he'd recognize me anyways, and you're having me go incognito anyways, I doubt he'd even know of the Naruhata Lock-down incident..."
Aizawa looked up, his left hand still on Midoriya's shoulder, "Trust me, there is a good chance he would."
Izuku looked from Aizawa and glanced over towards the voice, looking thoughtful for a moment then his eyes went wide, "I KNOW..." His voice was suddenly muffled by Aizawa.
"Keep it down," his instructor admonished.
Midoriya nodded, "I know you, you're the Crawler, your quirk is 'Slide n' Glide,' based on how you used to use it when you started your Vigilante activities," he paused for a moment cocking his head and looking thoughtful, "Though it really isn't the best name for your quirk given it is more like a force field, you're the Vigilante that ended up becoming Captain Celebrity's Sidekick and moved to the United States."
"Izuku Midoriya is almost like our resident quirk encyclopedia, and your case would have been unusual enough that it would have caught his interest."
"S-so what's going on?"
"I wanted you to be aware of Koichi here being along for the Summer Camp, so you don't blow his cover."
"Huh?"
"I'm going to be one of the bus drivers," Koichi explained giving his air-head style grin, "I already cleared Eraser borrowing me, though I didn't know for what at the time."
"I don't get it?"
"It's because Koichi is a complete outsider, someone most of the class won't recognize particularly when he isn't in his ridiculous hoodies."
"Hey now, don't diss the hoodies!"
Aizawa just ignored him, "Midoriya, I contacted Koichi because he isn't high-profile enough, at least in Japan, to be immediately recognized and the villain with the decay quirk may have some issues facing him."
"Right his force fields," Midoriya nodded, "I promise I won't say anything to the others, not even to Minoru, Momo, or Fumikage."
"Good," Aizawa left it there because it wasn't rational to continue to harp on it.
"Okay so who else will know about me?"
"I will let Vlad know and the other relevant individuals know when we get to our destination."
"And they are?"
"Not in front of Midoriya."
"Okay then, it was nice meeting one of Eraser's students," Koichi waved, "See you in a few hours."
Bar (Undisclosed Location):
Tomura Shigaraki watched the Sports Festival footage again, 'I need targets for my kill list and my capture lists.' Sensei had told him that he needed to show some independence however, "Sensei, did you have any students in particular you wanted abducted?"
"Tomura, I thought I told you that you need to grow and not have me hold your hand every step of the way."
"I'm asking if there was anyone in particular you wanted the Vanguard Action Squad to pick up, while I sent them on their little errand."
"That's rather thoughtful of you," All for One replied, "I think Katsuki Bakugo would be a good candidate for recruitment, though I believe you already have him on the list."
"How about All Might's love child? I kinda want to kill him just to get under All Might's skin..."
"The good doctor wants him for a little project, it would be preferable if he were alive for it."
"I'll put him down as a capture or kill, with a preference towards capture, it sucks that I don't have a location as to where they are going, you sure your spy isn't..."
"They changed where the summer camp is being held at the last minute, the students won't know until they get there."
"That sucks, it makes it harder to plan this out, not knowing the opposition they will be facing, and not knowing the terrain. I've decided on three students for my priority capture list in addition to the one you're suggesting as well as one for my priority kill list. I just wanted to be sure I didn't have someone marked on my 'priority kill list' that you wanted as a specimen. Oh, I also made it quite clear that your grandson was seriously injured in all of this I would kill them myself."
"That's very thoughtful of you," praised All for One, "Family is important after all. I am concerned about your plan being fairly simplistic though."
"If I had a location as to where this camp was taking place, I could come up with more details, but since I don't know if they are going to a forest, or an uncharted Island in the Pacific, how far from the nearest town, and other details such as what other heroes are in play..."
"Fair enough, it is frustrating trying to plan something when you don't at least have a rough idea where the plan is supposed to be carried out. All in all, it is fairly well thought out given the limited information and your current experience level, this is a huge improvement over USJ."
"Thank you master, I have one concern though."
"Oh?"
"You recommended this Dabi guy, is he good enough to handle the raid? Can he keep the more troublesome members in line?"
"He should be, he is also fairly good at improvising, why are you allowing Spinner to participate given his admiration of Stain?"
"While it's true that he certainly would potentially undercut an attempt to kill Izuku Midoriya, and he'd possibly try to undercut an abduction attempt, you did say you wanted the brat alive for now, and I trust Spinner has a level head compared to so of the other recruits like Muscular or Moonfish."
"Fair enough, it seems as though you have a workable plan."
Notes:
I saw something in the latest Vigilantes chapter that I really couldn't resist adding Koichi to all of this. Aizawa calling him in as a wild card for the summer camp arc is a big game changer. I thought about a reveal being later, but then given Midoriya, it was rather likely he'd recognize "the Crawler."
I actually originally had an entirely different chapter planned for this chapter, but the latest Manga chapter just seemed like a really cool tie-in.
