Finding Happiness Ch.1

Luna sat quietly in the cafeteria; she finally was able to get a little lunch for herself. Working as an ARNP at St. Thomas was a lot busier than she first anticipated. Coming from Chicago, the ERs were always packed with sick kids, drunks, druggies, ect. She thought that coming to a small town would be a slower pace, but alas, even the small towns have the dark underbelly. Mostly she has been dealing with drug addicts, and an occasional need to stitch someone up. But last night a pregnant junkie came in,
she lost a lot of blood, an emergency c-section was needed, Luna wasn't going with the surgical team with the baby, she stayed and monitored the mother. Watching her through the night to make sure that she didn't die was one of the hardest things she has done. While not one to judge another's life story, it was hard for her to separate her anger at the woman for putting her need to get a fix over the well being of her baby.

Taking a deep breath Luna rallied herself, Dr. Nameed asked her to work on the OB/GYN floor this coming week, so instead of heading back to the ER where she was most comfortable, she was going to be catching babies. It's not exactly the worst-case scenario, but she liked the ER, there was a simplicity to the process.

Before she could get too distracted Luna made her way towards OB. Coming off the elevator, she could see that Dr. Knowles was talking to a tall darked haired lady. By the looks of the conversation, it wasn't friendly. Sparring the duo, a quick glance, Luna made her way to the nurse's station, it was time for her to chart her notes and start the process to close out her shift. Sitting down at the computer, she grabbed her notes and started to input her information for the day's shift, she probably had about 5 minutes of uninterrupted typing before the dark-haired woman was standing in front of her.

Taking a moment to look up from her computer, Luna could tell this woman was not to be messed with. "Is there something I can help you with today?" she asked politely.

Gemma stared down at the girl in front of her, just by looking at the girl, she wasn't a moron, but she also wasn't stupid, but Gemma wasn't really in the mood for a smart girl. She needed someone to give her information on the junkie whore who nearly killed her grandson. "That junkie in room 4111, how's she doing?"

It didn't take a rocket scientist to know that this woman had no feeling towards her patient, but she was quite certain that if she didn't answer the question, this lady would cause trouble one way or another. "She's in detox, we put her in a medically induced coma so she can recover from her surgery as well as whatever she injected. Someone brought in something for her, now the hospital is trying to cover their asses, but baring any complications, she should be fine. Would you like to go sit with her?"

Gemma smirked. "No baby, I'm probably the last one she wants in her room. She's the reason my grandson Abel is in the NICU, junkie whore."

Ah, that made sense, grandma was pissed. Luna could understand. "I'm sorry that he's fighting for his life so young. But Dr. Nameed is a great pediatric surgeon."

Her nails lightly tapped the desk where she was standing, Gemma took a moment to really size the girl up, she was very beautiful, her eyes were a dark green, natural blonde hair, and from what she could see very petite. The boys would jump all over her like a man that were starving. "Thanks sweetheart; are you on Abel's case or just the junkies?" she asked.

Trying to remain professional and not give an indication that she agreed with the older woman's observations. "No, I'm on this floor for the coming week, hopefully soon, I'll be back down in the ER."

Gemma had enough small talk, but didn't want to come across rude, for whatever reason, she was going to be polite to the young lady, something in her years of experience said that she would be an ally, in what she wasn't sure, but Gemma did not get where she was for making stupid mistakes.

"Good luck sweetheart, I'm going to go sit with my grandson, if that junkie wakes up, will you have someone let me or my son know?" she asked.

Pulling up the chart for Abel, she turned the computer towards the woman, "You Gemma Teller-Morrow? Son Jackson Teller?" she asked.

Looking over the information on the computer, Gemma confirmed both the numbers for her and Jax. "Yea baby, those are the best numbers to reach us at."

Typing a few things into the computer, "I put the contact information on her chart as well, so if someone pulls it up when I'm not here, it will go to you or your son, does that work?"

Gemma was satisfied, "Yea, that does. Thank you, baby." With that Gemma took her leave and started heading towards the NICU.

Luna couldn't believe that she spoke to the biker queen and was left unscathed. Rumors about the Sons were numerous, but several months of living in this little town, for the most part they kept to themselves, so whatever they did or didn't do, as long as it didn't directly impact her, Luna was good minding her own business.

Finishing up her charts, she made her rounds before she left, walking into Wendy's room, she checked her vitals, they were all within normal range, checking her leads to make sure that she was getting the proper doses of meds, everything seemed to be in order, as she left the room the 2nd shift nurse came in and verified that everything was good, and started her rounds for the evening.

Luna took her time in the locker room, she didn't want to rush home to her empty home, while she was grateful for the peace that Charming seemed to offer, it didn't really offer the excitement of Chicago. But that is what she traded the big city for, she wanted a quieter life, or at least not to go into work everyday and see bullet holes in young teens, too many times she stood over the dead body of kids under the age of 10 because of stray bullets. That was her beef, if you want to be a banger, fine, handle your shit, but when you bring your business to the streets and kids are getting killed in the crossfire, no, that's some gangster bullshit.

Rubbing her neck, Luna quickly stood and headed towards the parking lot, as she made her way to her truck, she could see that Dr. Knowles was making her way towards her. Fuck, what do you want? She watched as she approached, out of all the doctors and nurses, most people seemed like they were good people, but Dr. Knowles, she was shady, she was hiding something, that truly didn't bother Luna, she didn't have to work directly with her, so whatever her deal was, it didn't impact her life.

"Hey Luna, can I talk to you?" she asked.

Not wanting to be rude, "Sure, I was heading home, but I got a few minutes."

Tara didn't really know Luna well, except that she was from Chicago and moved to Charming a couple months before Tara returned. But seeing Luna talk with Gemma earlier, she wanted to know if Gemma kinda admitted that she was the one that gave Wendy the dope.

"So, I saw that you were talking to Gemma earlier, did she say anything about Wendy?" she pressed.

Internally rolling her eyes, even if she straight up admitted it, Luna would not discuss that with a surgical resident, she would bring it up to HR before that. Doctors, always acting like they are detectives when all they need to be doing is their jobs. "No, she was just making sure that her grandson's chart was updated with her information as well as the child's father, she didn't talk to me about Ms. Case."

Tara looked disappointed, she was kinda hoping that Gemma would have threatened Luna or come across as a super bitch, it would help having a friend when it came to Gemma. It wasn't that she was afraid, but she needed Jax, and getting another person to admit to him that his mother's toxic would make it easier for her to get closer to him.

"OH, well, just be careful, Gemma isn't one to mess around with, she's dangerous. She thinks because she's a biker's old lady she's untouchable. She's not you know." Tara breathed out.

It was weird for Luna, it seemed that Tara was trying to convince herself that she believed what she was saying. Not her problem, nor would she make it hers.

"Dr. Knowles, whatever you may have against her, that's a you thing not a me thing. So, I'm going to head home for the night, perhaps you should as well." With that Luna jumped into her truck and left Tara standing in the parking lot looking like a fish out of water.

Instead of going straight home, Luna stopped at the diner, while it wasn't the Dearborn in Chicago, it was decent food. Sitting at the countertop she ordered her burger and waited. Taking out her phone she ended up getting distracted by the random cat video that popped up. She didn't notice that two Son's walked in and made a beeline towards her.

Jax just got off the phone with his mom, Abel was doing OK, so far, he was holding strong and tomorrow morning barring any issues with his vitals, Dr. Nameed was going to go in and repair the hole in his stomach, if he did well with that surgery, he would give Abel sometime and go in and correct his heart. Tara said that Dr. Nameed gave Abel a 20% chance and that was being optimistic, he didn't know what pissed him off more, the fact that Wendy couldn't keep a needle out of her arm long enough for the baby, or the fact that his ex was trying to sound sympathetic about the situation but failed miserably. Shaking his head, he turned to Happy and indicated on getting some food. The two of them parked their bikes and walked into the diner.

Happy surveyed the diner with a glance, while he was certain nothing would pop off here in Charming, years of being on the road it ingrained in him to always be cautious and keep his head on a swivel. Once he preserved that there was no threat to himself or the VP he nodded towards Jax, and followed the young man to the counters. She stood out amongst the other customers at the diner, her blonde hair was piled on top of her head, and from how she was sitting her mind was a million miles away. He was sure that she was another dumb bitch, outside of Gemma or his momma, there wasn't too many woman that Happy spoke to, most of them were not even worth remembering their names.

As he and Jax approached the counters, he could tell the moment she realized that someone was near her, she straightened her back and carefully checked her side to see who was approaching her, it surprised him honestly, not too many people have the insight to pick up on small changes of their environment. She gave them both a quick glance over and went back to her phone and food. Normally woman would either blatantly stare, or get up and leave, she did neither. Interesting. He thought to himself.

Sitting down a few chairs away from her, Happy kept his eyes on the door and by proxy her. He could see by her body language that she was keenly aware that she was being watched, but she never made a move to get up or bring further attention to the fact. Honestly, she just quietly ate her meal and played on her phone. Looking over at Jax, he could see that his VP was tired, but the shit with the Mayans, and now his kid, he understood that he was dealing with some shit.

"Abel's going to be OK man. Gemma's there, and you know she'll put a foot up someone's ass when it comes to the kid." Happy rasped out.

Jax couldn't help but smile at his brother. Happy wasn't one for emotions, hell Happy wasn't one for basic human conversation, but he knew that his brother cared deeply for the newest member.
"Thanks bro. I know, Ma isn't playing around."

The two talked a bit, but eventually sat in a comfortable silence. It was fine with Happy, while engaging in conversation was something he would do occasionally, sitting and talking to another dude while eating, that just sounded gay.

As Luna finished up her meal, she couldn't help but wonder who the two Son's were. She's seen a few of them around town, but never so up close. The blonde one was a sexy biker type, just by the look of him, he could talk you right out of you panties, he was hot, the other, dark features, bald head with a tattoo, he was intense, not someone you would want to fuck around with. Dangerous. He reminded her of a sex on a stick. It's been a minute since she's had any kind of sexy fun time but was, she really going to bark up that tree. Sparing a quick glance at him, oh hell no. While she was certain that she would enjoy herself, he didn't seem like a talk and get to know you type, more like fuck me, get out. Not that she personally had issues with people that lived that way, she wasn't someone that wanted to be treated like a whore. Oh well. Putting down a $20.00, she was about to head out the door towards home, but alas the universe was against her, the sound of her phone ringing put a frown on her face.

"Hello?"
"Hey, Luna, it's Dr. Nameed, I need a favor?"
"Dr. Nameed, what can I do for you?"
"You were a scrub nurse once upon a time correct?"
"Yea, that's what I was in school for, before I became an ARNP, why?"
"Tomorrow I'll be going in to fix a hole in a preemie's stomach, I'd love for you to assist on the procedure, I need someone with experience in this case, and your records show you were a scrub nurse for a Neonatal surgeon, correct?"
"Yea, Dr. Weaver, he was the top Neonatal surgeon in Chicago. Who's the patient?"
"Abel Teller. I'll expect to see you at 8 am."
"Abel Teller, 8 am. Yes sir, I'll be there. Goodnight Dr. Nameed."

With that she hung up the phone, and as she stood there was a tall blonde in her space, and an even taller bald man.

"Uh, may I help you gentlemen?" She asked. While she wasn't inherently afraid, she wasn't stupid either.

Jax spoke first, "What is going on with Abel Teller?" he demanded of her.

Luna wasn't one to be pushed around, "I'm sorry, that's private information, you'll have to reach out to the family if you want any information." Carefully trying to stand without acting like a bitch was a talent, but she knew that men tend to be sensitive when it came to disrespect, especially affiliated men.

Jax looked down at the woman, then quickly at Happy, he was surprised, she didn't know who she was talking to. That wasn't something that he was used to anymore. Most everyone in Charming knew who the Son's were.

"I'm Jax Teller, Abel is my son, I was on my way towards the hospital, but I needed to grab some food, please what's going on with my son." He all but pleaded.

Blinking quickly, "I'm sorry, I've never met you, and I'm new to his case, I apologize for not putting it together." She said quickly, "Dr. Nameed is going to start the first part of his surgery tomorrow morning, and he called me to ask me to be on this team, that's all, just a confirmation on his surgery and the team." She breathed out.

Jax looked relieved, good nothing new. "It's OK, my head is in a million different directions about this."

Happy watched as she interacted with the VP, most woman no matter what would stare at him, trying their best to flirt, but not her, she was all business.

Luna understood, working with pediatric cases before, she understood that the parents and family could be testy. "Hey, it's understandable, he's had a rough start, but I can promise that Dr. Nameed is a great surgeon and will do what he can do save your son."

This is what Jax needed, someone to say they will do their best, not make any false promises, not fake support.

Luna watched at the blonde warred inside his head. Poor guy, looking over his jacket it read; VP, so whatever the SON's were, he was the second in command, he couldn't appear weak in front of the others. "Mr. Teller, you're doing everything that you can. There isn't a handbook on the right thing to say or do in this situation. Just be there for your son, it's all you can do."

Taking a moment to look towards the other gentleman, she could see that she barely came up to his chest. Great. She wasn't a midget, but this man definitely made her feel smaller that her already 5'3. As she locked eyes with him, she couldn't help but feel a rush of something run through her body. For now, she would leave it as adrenaline, because he was an intimidating man.

Happy watched her with rapt interest, most woman wouldn't dare look him in the eyes, even the whores at the club, they avoided eye contact with him, but not this girl. She looked him in the eyes, and even gave him a small smile. Interesting.

Looking down at her watch, "Mr. Teller, I don't mean to be rude, but I must get to bed, I have an early day tomorrow, and I want to be well rested for your son's surgery. So, if you would excuse me."

Her talking snapped Jax out of his momentary brain freeze, "Oh shit, I'm sorry, yes. I get it. Before you head out, what's your name?" he questioned.

As she looked up into his blue eyes, she knew that he was asking because he was going to find out everything, he could about her, but she was sure she would do the same thing if she was in the same situation. "Luna Erickson." With another small smile, she headed out to her truck and quickly made her way home.

Happy watched as she got into her truck and drove off, as they headed towards their bikes, he saw that Jax pulled out the pre-paid, "Juice, pull everything you can on Luna Erickson, she works at St. Thomas she's on Abel's case, I want to know everything you can." With that Jax hung up and motioned for Happy to head to the club house. "I'm going to sit with the kid for a bit, see you brother."

With that, both men headed off in different directions, both unaware how that little blonde would impact their lives for the better.
