Chapter 1
Saul
Saul Carter had not always been a thief. He was the son of a great lord, his father almost the equal to King Zan. But one day, shortly after the usurping, while out on his daily horse ride, he spied a poor beggar woman. Saul was a generous soul and stopped to ask if she needed any money.
She looked up at him with big green eyes that did not suit her face, and said 'Come here, let me read your fortune, I must earn your kindness.'
As she began to toss the bones, Saul began to protest
'No I really must be going...'
'If you wait, you will be greatly rewarded.' She grinned, a crooked smile revealing a row of blackened stumps.
'Just wait...' 'But...' Interrupted Saul.
'NO BUTS!' the woman shouted
'Now, the winds of Tarelia have changed, and your fortune is about to as well' she cleared her throat loudly
'But... but they change all the time don't they?' Saul was silenced by an icy glare from the witch.
'Of course they do! Lets say that you had eggs this morning instead of grits, and one was bad, you would've been sick all day and most the night, and never would have stopped to speak with me!' she ranted waving her arms about emphatically.
'I see your point.' Saul lied, thinking that he should pick his beggars more carefully.
'Ahem...' she began again. 'A great war almost ravaged our lands, but a surprising person prevented it. King Zan has passed, and his queen and daughter have gone missing. They say the queen gave the princess away to someone who would take care of her and keep her safe.'
Saul was irritated now
'Why are you telling me things I already know? I was at the naming party, who wasn't? I think you should just be on your way, and forget about this career of yours.'
'Please...' insist the woman with a rushed tone, grabbing Saul's arm.
'Please take her far from here there is too much danger and I can't escape the search parties forever' she pushed a small bundle of pink towards Saul.
"You must keep her safe from any who would have reason to harm her, but you may trust the Wizards. It was not Rigel's doing."
Saul stood shocked for a moment looking down at the baby; she was sleeping peacefully, unaware that she was being given to some stranger. Saul tuned to the woman to object but she was gone, a faint tinkling of a bell, and a solitary eagle leaving a tree nearby, was all that sounded her departure.
Saul was going to leave the baby princess by the side of the road and hope some one else would see her, but then the little princess opened her eyes and giggled grabbing at his hair and face. Saul couldn't help him self. He smiled, and took her home.
He sold or gave away everything he could and gathered his most loyal friends and headed deep into the forest, heading to thief's valley.
'How are you going to keep who she is a secret?' asked Seth, Saul's best friend
'Change her name, I'll say she's my... niece, she's my niece Anyé
. We'll take it from there...'
