Chapter 6
Jack and Jill
The young guard that had been ordered to accompany the strange hooded witness until the captain arrived, was extremely uneasy, he did not at all like the look of the shop.
'The owner must not be one for decorating; this place looks about as cheerful as a lion's Den.'
The stranger grunted in response 'you're not here to criticize; you're here to arrest that thief. There she is that's the one!' he pointed directly at Anyé standing across the room by herself.
The guard sighed and rolled his eyes, this man was definitely a strange one for sure. He placed his hand on his sword hilt at his waist, and strode across the room.
'Milady,' he began as he reached her. 'I hope you will forgive this intrusion to your shop, but...'
'Oh! It's not my shop, the owner, um, she just left, I was only shopping here.' said Anyé, she could tell the guard had some magic in him, but whether he was a wizard, or part faerie she could not tell. She looked past the guard to the hooded man, who seemed to be leering at them.
'Well,' the guard said, sensing the same feeling towards Anyé. 'That's a surprise; I'll just get to the point then, shall I? Well, there has been a theft on the Market Street, this, um, man,' he gestured to the figure still standing in the open door way, "He said he saw you leave the robbed shop, just before the owner noticed that an object of some value had gone missing. He informed my captain, who is now on his way. I'm to check if you possess the object in question, and take you to him for further questioning. Do you understand Miss?' the guard seemed uneasy, like he expected a monster to jump through the window.
Anyé agreed. "What was the item? I doubt I have it, I paid for everything before I left." She handed the guard her bag and he rummaged through it, uncomfortably aware of Anyé's scrutiny.
'You're sure you paid for everything?' he asked.
'Yes, everything, what was missing?'
'This.' the guard held up a gold belt, its interlocking segments uncoiling as he pulled it out of the bag. To Anyé it was like a sick magic trick.
The man in the doorway let out a triumphant yell 'HA! I told you! It was her!'
'I didn't take it,' argued Anyé in shock. 'I don't know how it got in my bag, but I didn't do it!'
The guard looked just as shocked as she did, a routine tip, had proved true, go figure.
'I'll bet she's part of that Thieves valley too! You could eliminate all crime if she talks!' the hooded man ranted.
Anyé and the guard opened their mouths for a sharp remark, but stopped short. 'How do you know about the valley?' they questioned in unison.
'See!' shouted the man. 'She admits it's a real place! Arrest her!'
As the guard moved in to grab her, Anyé thought quickly. If she timed it right she would only use up a small amount of magic, and be able to escape.
Sensing what was coming, the puppy skittered out the door in fright. Anyé snatched her bag back, concentrated, and in a flash of golden fur, a lynx, hissing and spitting in fury, stood where the girl had been seconds before.
The creature leaped past the guard and knocked over the man in the doorway, pulling off his hood. It stopped short in horror, changing back to her true form.
'Seth!'
Her uncle's best friend grinned wickedly at her from the floor. Strong arms grabbed her from behind, the captain had arrived. Anyé struggled free and swung her pack at the arriving captain as hard as she could; catching him under the chin and sending him crashing backwards out the door.
Anyé dashed out of the shop, running full tilt, not quite sure where she was headed. The guard and the puppy followed her. As she reached the edge of the village, she spotted the hill and changed her course, remembering the river just on the other side. If she made it, over to the other side, she could magic herself to safety.
As she ran, she heard someone shouting her name, distracting her long enough for her to stumble, her shoes slipping on the still dew-drenched grass. She kept going, ignoring her burning lungs, and her screaming muscles.
Just when she thought she had made it to the top, her feet flew out from under her, and she dropped to the ground like a stone, continuing to roll and tumble back down the hill.
As she spun, she realized she was about to collide with the young guard.
'Look out!' she tried to shout, but a bump in the hill knocked the breath from her lungs. They smashed together with a sickening crunch, but for a brief second, they were eye to eye, and then Anyé's world went black.
'Oh that's what happened.' Anyé sat cross-legged on her cot with the puppy curled in her lap as she came out of her vision.
'That was stupid,' she looked at the smiling dog 'Like those old nursery rhymes, humpty dumpty, or Jack and Jill.' she sighed 'I need to get back home quickly, who knows what Seth is up to! That scheming rat-faced toad! OooooH!' She folded her arms and sighed in a huff.
She eyed the window and walked over to it. Her cell was almost directly over the moat, on the side of the tower not facing the town; the distance from the opposite side of the moat, to the forest was a good sprinting distance.
She looked down at the puppy. 'I think I know just how to get out. But first, I think you need a name... how about... Red?' the puppy barked happily. "That's what I thought." smiled Anyé. 'Well, let's get to work.' Anyé reached down and pulled up the edge of her dress to reveal her boots, she reached inside of the right boot and pulled out a small dagger,
"Just for emergencies." she whispered to the puppy. Anyé walked calmly to the window and began to chip away at the mortar that held the bars firm.
PLEASE! i am not begging, but it's getting close!
i worked so hard on this story to change the name of the main charactor, and chop-shop the whole plot (i changed certain things, if you've read before, see what's different!)
thanks to the small reviewer list again
