Chapter 14
A Council Interrupted
In the Faerie Realm, Lord Athodemus was preparing the Council of Elders for terrible news. He gravely faced his peers, ageless faeries like himself, sharing a brief moment of eye contact with each, a faerie tradition before the deepest sorrows and most horrible information was given.
"My Friends, thespies that we have sent to live among the Tarelians and Tollonians have told me that Henric is preparing to strike, not us," he assured them, "but our brothers and sisters in Tarelia. Tollone for the moment is safe, but Henric most certainly will not stop there."
In the past two decades, Athodemus had given many announcements much like this one, he knew the elders had grown tired of the councils, instead of happiness and change, they now came to symbolize devastation and loss.
"I move to ask that the council approve of a plan, though drastic in measure, could give our people, and the humans, a fighting chance."
The council head stood up. He stared down his nose at the faerie lord, something only an elder of high rank could do. "Athodemus, most of this council has been by you side since your father was murdered,"
"Rest Cornelius' soul." murmured the rest of the council in unison.
The elder nodded. "we have approved every judgment you have made, and never questioned your actions. Why then, do you still, after nearly a thousand years, still ask our approval? You should know that whatever you ask, we will follow."
Athodemus agreed, "I know, but now especially, I need your approval. There is only a slight chance that this will work, and if it fails, we are all condemned in Henric's regime."
"What exactly is it that you plan? A full scale war? Are we to send more sons and daughters, more brothers and sisters?" a bold faced elder stood, glaring and impatient.
"not quite, we," Athodemus paused delicately, "we will enlist the aid of Fireke."
A collective gasp, and an eruption of out rage at this statement.
"insane!" "suicide!" "Have you gone mad?"
"Please! Please! Elders! Calm yourselves!" the council head shouted, producing a gavel with a flick of his wizened wrist.
The council held back their wrath, but glances of hate and loathing were cast at the lord.
"you are aware," began the council head. "That we swore an oath never to associate with that, Creature, after the end of the Last Magic War. We swore, you swore to not, and I Quote, 'Ally and assist, or engage in any form of contact with noted being, to isolate the Dragon and those who fall under his safeguards, the faerie realm's protection.' We pledged this oath with you, and now, you ask us to ignore centuries of our law, and ally ourselves with the monster that destroyed our people."
"he can help those still in Tarelia! He can help us remove Henric. You have to see that Henric is more of a monster than the dragon!" shouted Athodemus. The council burst into more disapproval.
"the dragon is a fool, he follows the raw magic! We will never tame him. He will turn on us once he has his precious forest under his claws once more!" announced a new council member.
The council head glanced around at the elders. "you have our answer. If you wish to seek out the dragon, you are a fool, and you must do it with out the rest of the realm. "
"Fine! I will seek out the Dragon! I will find our people in Tarelia and you will see that there are those willing to follow two fools!" Athodemus threw up his hands in anguish and left the council room, muttering to himself. "they will see."
A council member shriveled with age prodded the council head on the shoulder, "This has something to do with the disappearance of his granddaughter…" the council leader shook his head. "It always does."
