Prompt: The family's reaction to hearing the bed squeak in The Wedding Night
The clean up from the wedding was almost finished. Things were settling down as everyone grew tired after the long day. Dana was finishing up the last of the dishes while Stuart and Mariana dragged the last bags of trash out to the garbage cans. Busy chatter filled the kitchen as Sharon directed the grandkids at their tasks and the kids grumbled their displeasure at having to do all the clean up.
"Okay. We're almost done," Sharon said with the kids standing around her in the kitchen. "Looks like Dana's done with the dishes which means all that's left to do is get the chairs folded and tables collapsed and stacked, ready for loading in the morning. We should be done in no time if we all pitch in."
"C'mon Grandma. Can't we do that in the morning?" Brandon asked.
"Yeah. Everyone's tired, Grandma. Why don't we hit the hay so we can get up early and do it?" Jesús joined in, sliding an arm around Sharon, flashing his most charming smile at her. Sharon looked around at each of their faces, seeing her own weariness looking back at her. She rolled her eyes and smiled, grabbing Jesús' chin and kissing his cheek with a smack.
"Okay, my sweet boys. You win. But you're going to be up early to help me, right? All of you?" She scanned around to the rest of her grandkids, each one nodding enthusiastically, except Callie whose eyes were glued to the floor. "Callie, you, too?" Callie's eyes flew up to meet Sharon's, a tight smile pulling at her lips.
"Oh… uh, well I have my guitar lesson in the morning but before that, yeah. Of course."
"Good. Then let's-" Sharon was cut off by a loud squeak coming from over head. "Let's all get to bed, shall we?" she continued through another squeak.
"What's that?" Jude asked when it happened again, this time falling into a steady rhythm. Silence fell over the family as Jude looked around at them, confused. Realization slowly bled onto each of the other kids' faces, blooming red in their cheeks, their eyes wide with horror. "What?" Jude asked again.
"Oh god. Ew. Oh god." Mariana flapped her hands as she closed her eyes, her nose wrinkling. Jesús joined in with a groan, while Brandon's eyes flew to the ground, mortified, his neck and face splotched with bright red embarrassment. Another beat went by as Jude looked around confused before his eyes grew wide as well.
"Are they-"
"Okay!" Sharon said loudly, cutting Jude off. "I think we're gonna do those tables now. Everyone outside!" As she swept her grandchildren outside, she shared a look with Dana and Stuart. There was a hint of embarrassment on all of their faces. "Newlyweds," Sharon laughed, shaking her head.
Dana raised her eyebrows, a smile pulling at the corners of her mouth as she and her husband followed her outside. "Indeed."
