Chapter 18: You want us to do what?!
Felix Springfield woke up with a groan as his phone let off an old fashioned industrial sounding klaxon. He got up, putting on a bathrobe and slippers, gathering his shower supplies, but on his way down, decided to have breakfast first when he spotted his brother at the kitchen counter who already had a second bowl of cereal waiting for him.
"Hey brother how's it going?" he said as he walked up to him. Felix was born in Japan but was adopted by American parents when he was only about 10 months old. Skyler originally had a twin but he was lost during his mother's second trimester. His parents were looking forward to twins so much that they decided to adopt once they figured they could handle a second child.
"Not good." Skyler moaned in English, "I just had a dream that I was paired with that exploding kid that Hatsume got paired with! I feel like I dodged a bullet, as if someone made a last minute decision and changed who I was paired up with."
Felix simply shook his head at his brother, "I don't know Sky. He did seem like a jerk the way he was treating Hatsume. I know we've only known her for a day, but just because she is eccentric doesn't mean she needs to be called names."
"I bet he'll be begging for anyone to swap partners with him at the end of the year when he is allowed to." Skyler laughed, "And he'll learn the hard way not to be a jerk to anyone."
However, his face then turned to one of uncertainty, "Hey Felix. What happens to us if our Hero Course student gets expelled? I know Aizawa-Sensei said it was a logical deception and all during the evaluation, but what if he actually follows through on that threat?"
"I don't know." Felix responded after having another bite of his cereal, "Well just have to ask Maijima-Sensei and Kakushin-Sensei what happens."
"Ugh! Why did I have to come to Japan and follow you to a school that expels students so willingly?!" Skyler cried out placing his head on the counter.
"Because you couldn't stand another Arizona summer and going to a party school?" Felix deadpanned, "Sure, Arizona State has an amazing hero and support program, but they've been a party school for centuries. And because we liked watching Japanese Anime and reading manga together we are both fluent in Japanese so it was not a big deal for you to apply for a visa when I still had citizenship."
"Don't remind ME!" Skylar said leaning back on his stool, and then panicking as he leaned back too far and was just able to save himself in time before falling over. "Just be glad I care about you so much I followed you all the way across an entire ocean!"
"Come on." Felix said patting his brother on his shoulder, "Let's get dressed and head over to our Senseis and ask what happens to us when a hero course student gets kicked. Perhaps you'll have to team up with Hatsume? Bakugo's personality might be too explosive for the school to handle!"
"Don't put that out into the universe!"
Soon the two brothers were outside Classroom 1-H where they ran into Skyler's teacher, and they asked him their question.
"Well we never really discussed what would happen. But Eraser sure loves expelling students. He did actually expel all of 1-A last year within a month." Powerloader explained after listening to the two brother's question, although he acted fast when he saw them both panic, "But Principal Nezu said he's going to be harsher on accepting expulsions from Aizawa this year! I'll talk to Shota and Sekijiro during today's exercise. You two are in for a rare treat. We haven't done what we are about to do at UA ever before."
"Thank you very much Maijima-Sensei." Skyler responded, remembering to bow his head as was the custom in Japan, "What do you mean never done before in UA's history before?"
"You'll see." Powerloader said with a smile.
Meanwhile Adachi and Nakamoto were silently walking side by side heading to class 1-J and 1-I.
"Do you know what we are supposed to do today as first year business course students?" Adachi asked Nakamoto who simply shook his head.
"I have no clue Adachi. Perhaps more introductions? Or we start talking about applications for Microsoft Excel 6900?"
Adachi shuddered, "I just hope we start talking about the history of hero regulations."
"Nerd." Nakamoto whispered as they walked into their respective classrooms. Nakamoto sitting down next to the window in the exact same spot Izuku sat in Class 1-B, but he didn't know that. It wasn't long until his giant of a teacher Tōsui-kan-Sensei walked into the classroom.
Koro Tōsui-kan: He is classroom teacher for Business Class 1-I. He has made a fortune selling lines of hero theme children's toys and merchandise. He loved teaching more so after teaching his son how to run a business he came to UA to teach. He once tried to court Ms. Joke, but she said he was too happy and cheerful for her. 7'4" Blond hair, Blue eyes. Fun fact, his personality and mannerisms are based off of Koro-Sensei, except with a normal human body, he is going to just be so much fun to write! Isn't that exciting dear readers?!
Quirk: Euphoric Tentacles: He's just a happy guy and his happiness is infectious. His quirk makes all those wrapped in his tentacles lose all care in the world as they are lost in a state of bliss. At least for the next hour. These tentacles seem to spawn from his back.
Hero Name: Euphoria
"GOOD MORNING CLASS!" He called out in his always euphoric and fast voice, his golden ethereal tentacles springing out of his back and writhing about. "You will have your regular classes this morning! I know! Super thrilling and exciting don't you think!?"
The mob of green tie wearing students simply deadpanned back at him
"Awww! That doesn't get you excited?! Well I know what will cheer all of you up! After your lunch break you are all in for a magical surprise! We won't be doing anything boring such as excel sheets or word documents!" A couple of students moaned as they placed their heads on their desks, "We will be doing something that no business course at any hero academy has ever done before! We shall be doing something grand! Something glorious! Something absolutely Magnificent I tell you! We will truly be going Plus Ultra!"
"What is it Tōsui-kan-Sensei?" Nakamoto asked raising his hand.
"I'm afraid I can't tell you." His teacher responded flatly as his entire class dramatically collapsed and fell over.
"SO WHICH OF YOU LISTENERS CAN TELL ME WHICH VERSION OF THERE IS IN THIS SENTENCE IS BEING MISUSED!?"
Class 1-B was currently having their ears abused by Present Mic's absurdly loud voice. Izuku really didn't enjoy the class all that much. Mainly again thanks to him being very fluent in English as it was thanks to his mother teaching him in case they decided to move to America. He could speak it and read it finely as a native speaker, he just didn't understand the need to understand what a preposition was.
"It is the EIR version in the third sentence sensei." Izuku said after he was called on, and he answered it in perfect English.
"THAT'S THE EIGHTH TIME YOU'VE GIVEN ME A CORRECT ANSWER MY FAVORITE LISTNER! AND IN PERFECT ENGLISH TOO!"
The entire class again winced as a collective as the man kept shouting. The bell rang sounding that it was lunch time so, the class started packing up and heading towards the cafeteria.
"By the way Mic-Sensei, can you please not shout so loudly in class? It is really hurting our ears and we can't learn well if our eardrums are bleeding." Izuku said on his way out in perfect English, which caused him to sweatdrop and quietly excuse himself to the faculty lounge.
Izuku and his foster brother walked together as they went to the cafeteria. Both complaining about how Present Mic needed to learn to quiet down and understand that not everyone shared his enthusiasm about English.
"Seriously!" Hiro complained as they entered the cafeteria, "It is as if someone thought it was funny to set the tv to the highest volume and then throw away the remote!"
Izuku nodded, "Imagine if someone was to listen to his voice through headphones."
Hiro shuddered, "Don't put that out into the universe Izuku! You'll make everyone in existence bleed from their ears!"
The two brothers got in line, got their food and sat at the same table they ate lunch at yesterday. It wasn't long before their support and business course counterparts joined them.
"How were your classes this morning?" Hiro asked as he plunged his straw into his juice box,
"We didn't get our traditional morning classes today. All the support course classes met up together." Felix responded after taking a bite of rice, "We had to listen to Powerloader talk non-stop about safety precautions that we have to follow while in the support studios."
"Yeah!" Skyler laughed, "And the entire time he wasn't looking at us. His eyes were dead fixed on Hatsume the entire time during the lecture."
"She seemed a bit eccentric during orientation, but that hardly is worth such attention." Izuku said concerningly at the laughing brothers.
"You never heard what happened to the lab at her middle school? Apparently it was all the talk in the dorms after we moved in." Felix said once he got his laughter under control, and he answered the foster brothers head shakes, "She repeatedly was responsible for unsafe experiments that tended to go boom."
"Oh." Was all Izuku had to say after looking back down at his Katsudon. He felt like he dodged a bullet. He felt like someone had originally meant for him to be paired with her, but then changed their mind at the last second. Then he shook his head and reminded himself that is not how life really works.
"What do you think you two will be doing for your specialty classes this afternoon?" Hiro asked, and the brothers merely shrugged.
"Probably examine Izuku and Hiro's Hero Costumes to familiarize ourselves with them. See if we can figure out all the features and discuss how we think they were assembled." Felix said clipping his chopsticks.
"Yeah, something like an evaluation like you two had to go through yesterday, but for support students." Skyler said after slurping some noodles.
"But didn't Maijima-Sensei say we will be doing something they have never done at UA before?" Felix said worryingly, "Doesn't that negate the idea of building something as an evaluation. What if they have something else planned?"
"Tōsui-kan-Sensei said we'll be doing something similar." Nakamoto said as he and Adachi sat down next to them. "What if we are doing the same thing?"
"That doesn't make any sense!" Adachi said deftly as they all turned to him, "An evaluation for the business course students wouldn't be the same for the support department. It doesn't sound logical at all."
"But Principal Nezu said they are doing things completely different for our year." Skyler reasoned, "What if we have to go through a hero course exercise to better sympathize with Izuku and Hiro?"
"But we haven't had to do any really practical hero course exercises." Izuku pointed out, "Even then, we haven't done anything practically heroic since our entrance exam."
"What was your entrance exam like?" Felix asked, "I doubt it would've been anything like ours. We had to assemble a bunch of robots. We were graded on the quality of the robots we made and the unique gadgets we armed them with. Also how many we made within a 7 hour time frame."
"We had to write a paper on the ethics focusing on a former hero that made a decision that saved a lot of people but was very unpopular and ruined their career and how we would have handled the fallout differently." Adachi said, "Speaking of which, I don't remember seeing you in the exam hall Nakamoto."
"Well… you see…" Nakamoto said while sweating and blushing, "You probably missed me among the hundreds of people in the hall. You couldn't recognize or remember everyone."
"I see…" Adachi said while sipping his coffee, but he was saved by Izuku who remembered that Adachi's quirk was affected by caffeine and began asking him a lot of questions about how different types of coffee and tea affected his quirk.
Lunch proceeded on normally for the new six friends. Iida's new group was sitting next to him and joined in on the conversation from time to time when certain topics interested him. What really stumped them all is what the support course and business course students would be doing this afternoon.
The hero course students of course had no idea what was going on. Kan-Sensei hadn't told them that they would be doing anything unique or special. They had all sorts of theories. Many were shot down as being too ridiculous. They knew one thing though. This was UA, and at UA, anything could happen.
The lunch bell finally rang and everyone proceeded to start to clean up their plates, but then there was a crackle over the PA and Principal Nezu's voice came over the intercom, "Will all first year Hero, Support, and Business Course students please report to Auditorium-C please."
"Could this probably do with the surprise we have in store for us?" Felix asked as they all walked towards the designated auditorium.
"Most likely." Hiro said, just as confused as everyone else. This of course was the same auditorium he had sat in to take his entrance exam and where he was briefed upon the robots for the practical. He had a lot of memories of this room, some he'd liked to forget.
Soon both Aizawa, Kan, Nezu, the three Support Course and the three Business Course Teachers walked on stage after everyone was seated with their own individual classes.
"I wonder why we all assembled you here today instead of sending you off to your individual classrooms!" Nezu called out from the podium to a murmur of assent from the audience. "Well this is one of the special things we have planned for just your year! Would any of you like to take any guesses?"
"Will we be taking a special exam?" called out a business course student.
"Will we be assembling our hero course students' costumes with them?" called out a support course student.
"Will we be blowing stuff up?" Hatsume called out,
"Will be taking a nap?" A business student called out to the laugh of many and the glare of Aizawa.
"No Mr. Tanaka, you will not be taking a nap, but Ms. Hatsume has the closest guess out of all of you." Nezu said with a cackle of laughter which made everyone uncomfortable. "In order for you to better empathize with your hero course students, you'll be taking the same practical entrance exam that they took!"
"WHAT!?"
"YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!?"
"YOU WANT US TO DO WHAT?!"
"I DON'T WANNA DIE!"
"Calm down please!" Nezu cried out, "There is no cause for alarm. I'm proud to say that no student has died taking this exam in the last 57 years."
"If this exam hasn't changed in 57 years, then that proves it is outdated." Aizawa thought to himself. He considered this plan rational because if they changed the exam to better suit non-flashy combat quirks, they could probably find out which students would be best to replace their current stock of hero course students in case they lose their potential. Furthermore inspire a more permanent change for future practical examinations. He was miffed he couldn't get a girl who's quirk made her invisible and not suited for combat. He hoped that she would do well during the Sports Festival to get a transfer out of Class E and into the hero course like he did.
"Anyways as I was saying." Nezu started up again, "Business and Support Course students will board a bus that will take them to training ground beta. Meanwhile the hero course students will proceed to computer labs alpha and beta. From there they will don headsets and watch live camera footage of the business and support course students that they are paired with and offer them advice."
"But sir!" Adachi cried out, "What about those of us who don't have combat related quirks?! I have an intelligence boosting quirk! How could I possibly fight against robots?"
"Mr. Adachi." Nezu laughed, "I also have an intelligence boosting quirk and I also have a hero license. Anything is possible. Have no worry, Recovery Girl and her new assistant in training are here to help sort out any of you who get injured."
"New assistant in training?" Kan asked Nezu, which caught the students off guard. "Chiyo hasn't told us she got a new assistant."
"Oh. She declared that she was making Young Midoriya her new assistant in a meeting I had with her in my office before coming here without his consent." Nezu explained as all eyes in the auditorium found Izuku who turned into a tomato. Mic who was in the control booth, found it funny to shine a spotlight on him for extra effect. "Oh don't look like that Midoriya. The only way you get to train that aspect of your quirk is by actually healing injured people."
"You know Sky." Felix moaned as they headed outside and boarded one of the busses, sitting in the back of course, "I really hate it when you're right with your guesses."
"Hey don't blame me Felix!" Skyler shouted back, "I didn't actually know we would be actually fighting robots!"
"Yeah, but at least you two have a chance of defeating the robots." Adachi moaned as he sat down next to them with two cans of Pussy Hydration, the official energy drink branded and marketed by the Wild Wild Pussy Cats. Adachi was holding Pixiebob Blueberry and Mandalay Cherry, but Nakamoto had a can of Tiger Orange which was more of his preference.
"I thought your quirk worked with tea and coffee?" Felix asked, noticing the two large cans with provocative pictures of the two female heroes. Doing a double take as he read the name of the brand on the can, not having the brand in the states.
"Those are just the ones I prefer." Adachi moaned, "Energy drinks are more of a quick and dirty method. It hits me like a freight train after drinking these things."
"Yeah at least you can probably think of a smart way to defeat the robots." Nakamoto sighed, resigned to accept a zero score, "What can I do? Make the paint on the sidewalk wibble aggressively at them?"
It seemed to be way too fast of a drive for the nervous students, for they arrived at Ground Beta in no time. They proceeded to the changing rooms where their green and orange PE uniforms were waiting for them. They then proceeded outside the main gates where Adachi chugged both his energy drinks, his eyes flashing orange as his quirk took effect.
"Come on and go through the gate as soon as it opens!" Both Hiro and Izuku said into their mics and then into the earpieces that their business and support counterparts were given. "Don't wait for a countdown timer! That was the mistake many hero course applicants made!"
Nakamoto, Felix, Skyler, and Adachi took this advice to heart and were the first ones through the gate. A threesome of two pointers rushed them. Izuku watched on his monitor Skyler touch one of the robots, using his quirk to reduce the quality of the metal it was made out of to the point it wasn't more than rust and it crumbled apart. Adachi with his heightened intelligence simply found an off switch on the robots and deactivated it while being able to anticipate its attacks with excellent precision.
Hiro meanwhile watched Felix use his technopathy to hack into the robot and make it his personal bodyguard to help take out other robots. Nakamoto was simply struggling and Hiro had no idea what to say or what advice to give him.
"Some advice here Fuji!" he heard Nakamoto said as he tapped his earpiece contacting Hiro. "I have no idea how to take these things out without getting hurt."
"Um. Getting hurt is part of being a hero course student?" he heard Hiro say. "What kind of artistic mediums does your quirk work on?"
"Paint is the best I'm at." Kaito answered as he ran into an alley to get away from an angry three pointer, "But I can also shape clay and stone, but stone is really hard to work with."
There was silence on the other end as Hiro was thinking. He really wished he could ask Izuku for help because he was the expert at analyzing quirks. However Kan-Sensei had explicitly told them that they weren't allowed to ask their classmates for advice. They were also being judged on how well they react in giving advice.
It was then that he remembered Izuku watching a video of Pixie-Bob at work with Izuku back at their apartment not long after he was discharged from the hospital. Izuku wanted to share his passion of dissecting quirks and used her as an example. She could shape the clay and soil of the earth into creations, including golems that could fight. And then it clicked.
"Nakamoto!"
"Yes Fuji!?"
"There is a park about two blocks from the end of that alley! Get there! I have an idea that might work for you! The path is clear right now and you should be able to make it if you make a run for it!"
"Got it!"
Nakamoto ran through the alley and through the city streets. As Hiro said, it was devoid of robots, but that was a good thing for him right now. He peeked behind parked cars and dumpsters before proceeding just to make sure the coast was clear though. When he got to the public park he saw a gaggle of robots at the other end.
"Fuji! What am I supposed to do about those robots at the other end of the park when they see me!?"
"Are you familiar with the Pro-Hero Pixie-Bob?"
"Vaguely."
"I think your quirks might work similarly." Hiro began explaining, trying to picture what Izuku wrote about her in his hero notebooks, "Try shaping the clay in the ground into some kind of golem."
Kaito sagged his shoulders, working with clay was much harder than paint. He closed his eyes and put his concentration into his quirk. He felt the clay beneath the grass of the park and under the dirt begin to agitate as it became under his influence.
He tried with all of his effort to bring it to the surface. His head began to ache and his nose began to trickle blood. Slowly the clay sprouted from the ground in the shape of an amorphous blob. He attempted to shape it into a humanoid shape, but he was struggling with his concentration slipping.
It was at this point that robots noticed that Kaito was there at the other end of the park and were making their way towards him. This made Kaito panic a bit more and he felt his concentration over the now almost humanoid shape in front of him slip. He commanded to have the figure punch the incoming robots.
The golem punched clean through two one-pointers, however it barely managed to dodge an attack from an additional two pointer. Kaito felt a headache coming on, he knew he was beginning to lose control. He trained his quirk for recreation and beauty, not combat.
He had the golem dodge another attack from the two-pointer as he had it pull a similar kicking move that he saw Iida perform during the ball throw test yesterday. It managed to cleave through the two pointer.
It was at this point that the three pointer that was standing back came barreling in. It was more of a tank than anything else. Kaito hurriedly ducked and hid behind a tree, but then remembered that he needed a visual reference for his quirk to work. His golem barely dodged a couple of missiles that the three-pointer launched at it.
He had the golem dive to the right and it was clumsy getting back on its feet. Cracks were starting to form along its surface as the clay began to dry out. He knew he did not have much time. He ordered the golem to rush in and tip the robot upside down.
It lunged forwards lifting the robot and it tilted on its side. However, this was too much for the golem as it finally crumbled apart. Kaito tried to reform the golem but his headache was getting too much for him to handle and his vision was getting blurry as a result.
He knew he couldn't form another golem. Kaito slowly wobbled over to a park bench that was undamaged during the scuffle and sat down. He leaned forward, head between his knees as he clutched his head, barely unable to control the scream he wanted to roar.
"Nakamoto!" Hiro called out through his earpiece, "Nakamoto! Nakamoto please! Nakamoto please respond if you can hear me!"
Kaito wasn't in a state to respond. He was still too busy trying not to pass out from the pain inside his head as more blood dripped from his nose. Hiro seeing what was going on the monitors in the computer lab quickly pressed a button that would send medical robots to his location to take him to the infirmary. Not long after he pressed the button, he watched his colleague collapse from the pain he was in.
Meanwhile the other business and support course students were having a mixture of success and failure. Hatsume was helpless without her babies and having Bakugo yelling his head off in her earpiece wasn't doing much to help her. Adachi and Skyler were doing very well for themselves.
Adachi having taking Nezu's words of wisdom to heart was able to analyze and predict the preprogrammed attack patterns the robots were coded with and make a move for their off switches. With a few words of advice from Izuku, he was sailing smooth through the exam.
Skyler was also making smooth progress as well. His main problem was that he had no muscle on his thin body and was tiring out very quickly. He certainly had a quirk this exam was designed for, being able to turn the robots to rust, but he simply lacked any stamina to continue. He was able to keep going through thanks to words of encouragement from Izuku, and dread that Izuku now planned on designing a workout routine for him.
Now that the medical robots had picked Nakamoto up, Hiro was then able to turn his attention back to Felix who was doing well for himself. He like his brother had a quirk literally made for this task. But also like his brother, he didn't have any muscle on his body either. Even though he used his technopathic abilities to hack the robots to fight each other for him, running around this city scape was clearly leaving him out of breath.
"Springfield!" Hiro called into Felix's earpiece, "How are you holding up?"
"I'm feel like my heart is about to pop out of my chest!" Felix called out, tapping his earpiece, "I didn't think I was going to get this sweaty in spring. And call me Felix, I know it is the Japanese custom to refer to people by their family name until you know them well, but with my brother here, it is just going to get confusing."
"Okay then Felix. You only have a couple minutes left. There are a few more robots a block down to your right. There isn't anyone over there to steal your kills. I suggest you head over there to take them out and then you can command your final robot to self-destruct before the klaxon sounds ending the exam."
"Got it boss!" Felix called out before turning right and running down the street, every muscle in his sweaty body protesting loudly. He ran up, clutching a stitch in his side, the two pointer that was under his control whirring next to him. It then occurred to him that he could've just ridden on one of the robots like it was his personal steed.
As he mentally punched himself in the head he saw a trio of three-pointers become aware of him and rush towards him. He commanded his two-pointer to charge out and destroy them. It was able to cut them down with its laser without any issues. However, it's laser ran out of power after defeating the first two three-pointers. Having no better idea, Felix had the two-pointer go for a kamikaze run and it rammed into the remaining three pointer.
With all the remaining robots defeated and only a few minutes left in the exam, Felix slumped against the wall to take a well-earned breather. However, that is what he would've have done had Hiro not have spoken again into his earpiece.
"Felix you have to get out of there!"
"Huh, why Hiro?"
"When there is only a couple minutes left in the exam, that is when they release the zero pointer!"
"Zero Pointer? Why would they have a robot worth zero points?"
"I don't know, it is more of a gimmick, but it is taller than the buildings in the training ground. Izuku managed to take it out during the exam we took, but I'm not sure if any of you might have a chance. If it is anyone, it might be you Felix."
"Taller than the build… What! What! What!?" Felix cried out in panic as he stared up at the very tall buildings around him, "How come I don't see it?!"
"They keep it underground and then it powers itself up onto the surface." Hiro explained.
It was then that Felix felt and heard a large rumbling. Gulping, knowing that this was most likely the release of the zero pointer, he quickly began to run towards the entrance.
There was a cacophony of concrete being shattered and steel being warped as a Kaiju sized robot emerged from the ground. Felix stared right up at it, transfixed by a mixture of awe and fear.
"How the hell am I supposed to be the one most likely to take this thing out?!" Felix freaked out as he pressed his ear-com.
"Ummm." Hiro said nervously, "Try and command the robot to self-destruct or lose control of its balance and fall backwards."
Felix breathed rapidly, trying to get his emotions under control because that was vital for the hacking part of his quirk. He needed to be in a calm state of mind for him to be great at it. Something he was currently having difficulty with because there happened to be a Kaiju sized robot a mere thirty meters away from him.
"It's safe to have the robot fall on its back. I checked the cameras in that area."
Felix quickly tried to get control over his breathing, but his heart still raced. He felt his pulse race and unable to slow down. He closed his eyes and tried to picture himself as the robot.
Meanwhile in the control room, his teacher Ms. Jellavich, who is in charge of controlling the zero pointer for the examination was starting to wonder why she was slowly losing her control over her creation. It was then that she remembered one of the quirks of one of her students and she smiled.
"Mr. Springfield is just what the HSPC was looking for. Go Plus Ultra my boy!" she thought to herself as she and the rest of the teachers and a couple of HSPC representatives watched as the zero pointer lost its balance as it fell over on its back as if it had leaned too far back in a desk chair. Exactly what would've happened to Felix this morning had he not regained his balance.
There was a thunderous clang of metal against concrete as the zero pointer fell on its back. The gaggle of support and business course students that hadn't been carted off by medical bots or run all the way to the entrance gate stood there flabbergasted. It was then that the klaxon sounded through the training ground followed by Present Mic's voice announcing the end of the exam and calling all students to proceed back to the entrance to board the buses to take them back to the main campus.
Felix slowly, really slowly, walked towards the entrance for all of his muscles were protesting and the lactic acid that was released was burning up even with simple walking. He eventually made it to the bus where he was told on his earpiece that Kaito had to be taken away by medical bots thanks to quirk exhaustion.
"Come on now deary, what do you think is ailing Mr. Nakamoto?"
Izuku was in Recovery Girl's infirmary. He was personally escorted there by Kan-Sensei as soon as the klaxon sounded so he can get started working with Chiyo and training his healing abilities
"Quirk exhaustion. Not just because we just had a hero course style examination, but because over use of his quirk caused his brain to overheat and as a result he passed out." Izuku said as he had his hand on Kaito's head, both he and Kaito enveloped in a cerulean bluish aura. They both discovered this diagnostic ability to his healing factor earlier on when the first patients came in and thanks to Chiyo's wisdom. This however just made Chiyo more determined to keep Izuku on as her personal nurse and teacher's pet.
"I can feel large agitations in his brain. Like too many neurons over fired or over charged. I'm afraid I don't know the proper medical term." Izuku explained as the cerulean aura faded. "I would say it is a bit risky to activate my gold aura right now. I would've just used my green aura instead, but that is more of a geyser in terms of releasing my own stamina as healing energy when for this case I just need a trickle."
"Very good Midoriya. Very good." Chiyo sighed, "What would you suggest we do instead since we can't use our quirks to heal the poor boy?"
"Recommend a long soak in the onsen for aching muscles. And then an early night's rest to encourage his own bodies healing abilities. Drink plenty of water and to stay away from alcohol if he was of drinking age." Izuku explained, "Nothing fancy, just let his body naturally heal himself."
"Why not have us use our quirks when he gains enough stamina so he doesn't have to wait till tomorrow to feel completely better?" Recovery Girl asked. "Surely we should make sure our patient is back up at 100% as soon as possible. Is that not our job as medical providers?"
"It is our job as medical providers Recovery Girl." Izuku answered, "However, we also need to make sure we aren't over generous with our quirks. There has been some research done by Harvard University in America that the application of healing quirks have the risk of being addictive like narcotic drugs. However, that is not the case with every healing quirk such as yours which has been proven to have no addictive like effects. However, mine has yet to be proven or shown to contain or not contain narcotic downsides."
"What if when we do the tests and your quirk is like mine and does not have any of these effects? Should we not be healing every injury we see?" Chiyo asked and Izuku stood there thinking for a bit, wearing the white coat that Recovery Girl had given him with "TRAINEE" stitched and embroidered on the sleeves and chest.
"Well…" Izuku answered, but then paused as he thought once more, changing his mind on the answer he was about to give, "I supposed we should determine whether or not to use our quirk depending on how the injured individual got themselves hurt. If they were being reckless like thinking it was wise to do something outrageously stupid such as jumping off a roof into a pool and missing, then we should reserve holding back our quirks to help encourage our patients not to engage in reckless behavior in the future."
Recovery Girl stared at him for a good minute, Izuku began to sweat and crossed his fingers behind his back as his teacher glared at him, "I'll accept that answer." And Izuku visibly sighed in relief. Recovery Girl was by far the most intimidating member on UA's staff. It was then that Nakamoto groaned as he woke up.
"Midoriya?" he asked, "Where am I? And what is with the white coat?"
"Oh, the coat is because it looks cool." WHACK, "Okay, it is because I'm Recovery Girl's personal student."
"Did you use your quirk on me?" Kaito asked, checking underneath the sheets to make sure he was still dressed in his workout clothes.
"No, there was no need because you won't be heading back out into the field and all you need to recover is a good night's sleep." Izuku answered, "Your UA uniform is next to you on the nightstand. I'll close the curtains so you can change in privacy."
Izuku closed the curtains around Nakamoto's bed, and walked back to the front with Recovery Girl to discharge a female business course student who Izuku had to use his quirk on to fix a broken leg.
The curtains were pulled back and Izuku walked back towards him, minus the white coat, "Recovery Girl says you are good to go. Everyone else here will have to spend the night for observation. We have to head back to Auditorium-C to listen to the teachers before we can head back to the dorms to cook dinner. It is my turn to cook dinner for the boys. I plan on cooking an American Style Roast dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, graham cracker coated mac and cheese, rolls and all. It should be ready in a couple hours after we get back to the dorms. I did the prep work this morning to save time."
"Ummm… Can I come over and have some?" Nakamoto asked, his mouth watering at the idea.
"You are my foster brother's business consultant, of course you can come over." Izuku answered with a smile, "Of course the girls are going to be upset again that we are having a feast like dinner and they are probably having to deal with microwave ramen since none of them can cook."
"That almost sounds unfair." Nakamoto laughed as they proceeded down the hallway together towards the auditorium, "Surely some of them can cook at least."
"Yeah but not to the level that we can." Izuku answered with this arms up behind cradling his head, "I guess none of them but the passion and effort into it to make it a genuine hobby like Monoma, Sato, Bakugo, and I."
"Speaking of Bakugo, do really know what his problem is? He seems to want to explode like a mountain of TNT, but then when you turn up he hurriedly calms down."
Izuku thought a moment to himself before taking a deep breath before answering, "It is not my place to say. Let's just say I have an agreement with his parents. Has my foster brother told you about his past yet?"
"No…" Nakamoto said softly, "He hasn't. He hinted at something bad in his past when we all met up in the sports fields that first day, but he hasn't said anything to us yet."
"Well, I know exactly what he went through, but it is not my place to tell you. That's on him." Izuku answered with his eyes closed as they entered the auditorium and proceeded back to their assigned seats.
"So something terrible happened to you too then Hiro?" Kaito thought to himself as he sat down and waited for the teachers to come up on stage and start talking again.
"Thank you all for participating in the hero course entrance exam!" Nezu called out to the assembled students as Izuku and Kaito walked into the auditorium, being the last ones to arrive, "And thanks to Young Midoriya for assisting Recovery Girl in patching up the students."
There was a smattering of applause and Izuku glowed red from the attention and Bakugo in the front row did everything he could to ignore his former friend getting a room full of praise.
"Anyways, you might all be wondering why we had you all take the hero course entrance exam." There was a muttering among the students, everyone wanted to know exactly why a bunch of students who didn't have quirks suited to taking such an exam had to fight a bunch of robots, "The answer is simple, we are looking to overhaul the entrance exam for incoming years of students in the future. By seeing how students with non-combat related quirks manage in the current exam, we can look on how to make improvements for future years of heroes."
"There are also other reasons as well that I will not go into detail just yet. Let me just tell you that some of you, based on your performance here today, maybe working very much more closely with your hero course students in the field when the time arises. Not to mention you will be given opportunities that no support or business course student in Japan has ever had before. That's all I can tell you for now because most of the details are currently under wraps. You will find out in due time. Now, I suggest that you all head back to your dorms and relax in your hot springs and fill yourselves with a warm meal."
As the students started to file out of the auditorium, Nezu and the rest of the teachers took a back entrance out and all of the first year teachers were soon gathered in a special boardroom with a member of the HPSC.
"Did you see any of my students that you took particular interest in Madam Chairwoman?"
"A few. The Springfield brothers caught my eye. Anyone who was able to take out the zero pointer is always worth my attention."
"Ah yes the Springfield brothers." Nezu said as Powerloader and Ms. Roast both nodded as they each had one of the brothers in their classes, "Both of them have quirks that are well suited to multiple heroic scenarios outside the support studio. They are both exchange students from America, Arizona to be more precise, but Felix Springfield was in fact born in Japan, the Akita Prefecture."
"Yes, I believe these two brothers are ideal candidates for the new special Support Hero Licenses we were hoping on testing out in the coming year." The chairwoman explained.
"More specifically, what will my students have to go through if they are selected to take part in this beta test of yours?" Ms. Jellavich, the teacher for 1-F asked.
Hina Jellavich: She is homeroom teacher for Support Course 1-F. She has an infamous reputation for being extra hard on her students, thus resulting in mean nicknames from her students. No one knows much about her work as a hero because she took to being an underground hero after graduating from a hero school in Europe. Fun Fact, she was based off of Ms. Hellabitch from the same series as Tosui-kan. She is also now Skyler Springfield's homeroom teacher post age retcon, she is more fun to write than the boring teacher I came up with before.
Quirk: Hideous Laughter: She can cause physical damage to people by insulting them. (Thank you to my favorite D&D Cantrip)
Hero Name: Ms. Roast
"I'm sorry Ms. Roast, but the only one impressed us under the initial first impressions of the footage taken from the exam was Mr. Springfield." The chairwoman answered and Ms. Jellavich got up all angry.
"NOW LISTEN HERE YOU—"
"Now Now Ms. Jellavich, you most certainly don't want to anger the woman who is in charge of letting us hold our hero licenses and all." Tōsui-kan said calmly while releasing his quirk, Euphoric Tentacles from his back, wrapping it around his colleague to calm her anger, "You still want to be a teacher at this school?"
"UGH! FINE!" Ms. Roast shouted, "And get your slimy tentacles off of me you perv!"
"You don't have to be so mean about it!" Tōsui-kan whimpered as he recalled his tentacles back into his back. He never fully understood why his quirk never really had the same euphoric effect on her that they did on everyone else, except Aizawa, that man was always grouchy.
"Anyways back to the matter at hand," Nezu said, attempting to regain control of the meeting, he made a mental note to send Hina back to Dr. Maruki, again… "Were there any other support course or business course students you saw that had potential for your new program?"
"There were a handful of other support course students, and a smattering of business course students. There is one business course student that I'm most intrigued by, Kaito Nakamoto." The chairwoman asked and every teacher in the room tensed up, especially Tōsui-kan because Nakamoto was specifically put in his class so he could help him recover given his always cheerful disposition. They all knew what Kaito Nakamoto had gone through in the past year.
"He had to be carried off by medical bots before the exam finished." Kan stated, he agreed with Fuji's decision to summon the bots, and also thought Fuji did a good job coaching him, "Sure his quirk in the exam was similar to that of Pixie-Bob's, but what else do you see in him?"
"On his file, it said his quirk was ART: The control over any artistic medium." The chairwoman stated,
"But he so far has only stated on his file that he can control paint, clay, and stone, but the latter barely." Tōsui-kan said, remembering his student's profile off the top of his head.
"I'll answer your question with one of my own Euphoria." The chairwoman said closing her eyes, "What exactly are the boundaries of what is considered art?"
"I'll just let you know now Madam Chairwoman," Nezu said, his voice getting cold, "I won't let you turn him into another Hawks. He's faced more than enough trauma early in his life. I won't let you do what you did to him to Nakamoto. Do I make myself clear?"
"Of course Principal Nezu."
