The next day, the dragonrider as well as Hak, who has his changeling sitting on his shoulder are standing in the arena.
"That's your plan? Teach the dragons. Here of all places?" Ruffnut asks.
"Yeah. The arena is now empty anyways." Hiccup tells them.
"I think our dragons are nervous being here though." Astrid says.
"Yes, because our dragons are very sensitive." Fishlegs agrees, patting his meatlog.
"It's amazing your dad gave us the arena to use though." Astrid says.
"Yes. That'd be the case if he knew about this." Hiccup tells her.
"Look everyone. The dragons are out of control. We want them to stay, but for them to live together with us peacefully we need to teach them how first." Hiccup says.
"And how do you want to do that? I mean train these dragons fine. I believe that to be possible easily, but all of them? Isn't that a fools quest?" Hak asks.
"I already have an idea. Almost every dragon here on Burk is amongst one of our dragons' kinds. If we can manage to show the others, with Hookfang, Meatlog and Stormfly what to do, so they help us and not destroy everything in sight, I bet that would change most people's opinions on dragons." Hiccup explains.
"So you're betting on the fact that our dragons will become leader for their kind?" Astrid asks.
"Yep. Pretty much." Hiccup answers.
"Fine. It's worth a try." Snotloud agrees and the group then plans what dragon should help with what.
A few hours later Hookfang and two other nightmares drive swarms of fish into the fishermen's nets, filling them to the brim.
Stormfly rakes up Meldews fields with her spiky tail, a few other dragons following her lead. The biggest group is lead by Fishlegs however, who leads the dragon's daily droppings rain over the Meldews field.
The twins fetch some sheep and drive them back in their barn with help of Barf and Belch. Hiccup flies around, checking in on each group and Hak is teaching the small dragons which often steal food, not to steal anymore, but instead eat from a trough with some fish for them, his changeling threatening every dragon who tries to go into the food storage, while Hak bonks them over the head with a stick when they misbehave.
Stoic hears praise from the villagers the next day and calls for an announcement at the arena, where he congratulates them and announces the arena as a new dragon training academy.
About a week later Burk is about to get taken by a strong snowstorm and the animals on Burk are too scared by the dragons to be used for survival, not giving anymore eggs and milk. While the people on Burk are preparing themselves to stay in the chieftains hall Hiccup and his friends offered to get the animals under control and help them get used to the dragons.
"Hiccup do you think we'll make it in time?" Astrid asks worried, shivering slightly while standing in the arena with her friends, their dragons and the multiple animals.
"We don't have a choice, right?" Hak asks, draping his cloak around the girl, with his small changeling hopping on her shoulder and rubs itself against Astrid.
"How are we going to do this? Fishlegs?" Snotlout asks crudely.
"I think, we should first understand why the chicken are afraid of the dragons." The bulky teen says and crouches down on all four, looking up at Hookfang and shrieks back.
"Wah! OK. It's probably because they are big and scary." Fishlegs says, getting back up and hiding behind meatlog.
"I think we just have to wing it. We don't have enough time anyways." Tuffnut says and carries a chicken towards Hookfang, placing it on top of the Dragon's snout, causing Hookfang to sneeze and light both Snotlout's pants and the chicken's feathers on fire.
"Great idea. Good job making it worse." Hiccup groans, facepalming.
"How about we threaten them into liking our dragons?" Ruffnut suggests.
"I don't think so." Hiccup disagrees.
"Spitwing, behave. No spitting." Hak instructs his small dragon, holding out his hand, with the dragon climbing along it until it's on his shoulder and he picks it up, setting it down in front of the chickens.
The small dragon walks right up to one curiously and the two stare at each other intensely before the chicken dramatically falls over fainting.
"They are even spooked by someone smaller than them." Hak sighs, setting spitwing back on his shoulder.
"What are we gonna do? I promised my dad we'd succeed." Hiccup says.
Moments later a Jak, poked by Ruffnut runs right through the wooden barricade they set up as a makeshift gate and the other animals follow it outside, fleeing and splitting up.
"Catch them!" Hiccup shouts and they get on their dragons except for Hak, who grabs two bags before running after them on foot, running into Gobber and Stoic who came to fetch the children.
"Where are the others?" Stoic asks the teen.
"The animals broke out. They are trying to bring them back." Hak says, pointing in the direction he saw them last.
"Let's go." Stoic says and the three men stomp through the snow, shouting the kids names, finding them one by one.
"We only got a couple sheep and two jaks." Hiccup says.
"Where is Astrid?" Hak asks.
"I can't see anything in this snowstorm. We should go back." Gobber says.
"You go on, I'll find her." Hak says, leaving the group and heads deeper into the snowstorm.
"Are we really going to leave them?" Hiccup asks.
"What else can we do?" Stoic asks and just then Hookfang shoots a fire in the middle of the group while the dragons form a kind of dome around the humans, breaking the icy winds.
"They are protecting us." Hiccup says stunned.
"You do care hookie." Snotloud says dramatically, hugging his dragon's neck while the other dragons pile up on the flames, some curious sheep and jak coming over and alerting the others that it's safe for them.
"Astrid! Where are you?" Hak shouts stomping through the snow aimlessly.
He then spots a bright, almost white flame not far from him and makes his way over, seeing Astrid and Stormfly try to talk down some chicken.
"We don't have time. Stuff them in here and let's get out of here." Hak tells Astrid, handing her one of the bags and the two put each around 4 chicken in the bags before heading back, trying to follow Hak's fading footprints and spot the light from the dragon's combined fire just as they loose the tracks.
"Astrid, don't give up now." Hak says, pulling her close and rubs her arms while they walk over to the rest of the group with Stormfly, who joins in shielding them from the cold wind.
"Spitfire, stay with Astrid and keep her warm OK buddy?" Hak tells his small dragon who yips and crawls over to Astrid, wrapping himself around her neck like a scarf.
"We have some chickens." Hak reports, taking the other bag of Astrid who goes closer to the fire to warm up.
"It'll do. Let's go home." Stoic says and the group heads back to the chieftain's hall with their animals and dragons alike. The chicken also calming down after seeing the protective behavior of the dragons with the sheep.
"Don't go running off on me again." Xu tells Astrid, hugging her from behind while they are sitting against a wall with her in between his legs.
"Would you prefer to starve?" She shoots back.
"Over loosing you? Definitely." He answers without hesitation and Astrid kisses him softly.
"Ahem." Astrid's father coughs, looking at Xu annoyedly.
"Great. Of course they had to see us kiss again." Hak sighs, his dragon crawling up his arm and licking him over his cheek.
"They'll get used to it." Astrid says not worried and turns sideways, leaning into his chest relaxing and falling asleep ever so slowly.
