A.N. Alright. I had to write this ending thingy for a school assignment, and I didn't feel like it, so I got the most brilliant idea and went with it. So, well, here it is.

Disclaimer: Let's see. Hmm. I don't even own a copy of The Giver, let alone the whole concept and whatnot. So, on with the fic!

Speeding down the hill, trees flashing by his eyes as deep green blurs, Jonas couldn't help but feel joyful. Gabriel screamed in delight, his eyes shining with laughter. He obviously shared Jonas' ecstatic mood.

In the distance, glowing lights winked into view. Greens, reds, whites, and blues shone brightly on the dark shapes Jonas had just distinguished as houses. Headlights moved in the streets, and he heard blaring horns.

Then another sound reached his ears, a sound that immediately filled him with contentment. Words, ringing together harmoniously, like he'd never heard in the community. Several voices said the words, sang the words, and those words seemed important. Meaningful. Beautiful. It was music like Jonas had never experienced before, and he found himself humming the catchy tune along with the singers.

The city began to look so full of life, details quickly revealing themselves to Jonas' eager eyes. There were buildings taller than anything he had ever seen. So tall he thought if he went to the top, he'd be able to reach up and touch the sky.

And the people! Oh, the people. There were hundreds, thousands even. All colors and ages mingled together on the sidewalks. Excited children pulled their parents from window to window, small faces glowing as they pointed to the bright displays.

"Look!" Gabriel cried, chubby arm pointing to the center of the city, where Jonas could see the most amazing sight he's ever seen, and would probably never see again. A gigantic evergreen, as large as several of the building nearby. Draped all over its pine branches were several hundred yards of colored lights on strings. Green, red, and whites blinked on and off alternately. And at the top, shining luminously for all to see, was a great yellow star. All around the tree, the singers he heard held hands, smiling happily. Then Jonas and Gabriel were spotted.

People began pointing, whispering to each other. Soon, they were all running towards the outskirts of the great city, waving and shouting in greeting. Jonas gave a whoop, and Gabriel raised his hand in a wave, giggling gleefully.

Suddenly, they ran into a tree and died.

A.N. Hehe. My teacher's comment was "So sad :(" Hey, she never said I had to keep them alive! Review! Woot!
