Patching up Midoriya was more exhausting than she had imagined. All she did was mend the skin on some minor cuts and reduce the swelling around the bone fractures. She hadn't even attempted to heal any of the more serious damage. The burns littering his body and the bones cracked and fragmented in his arms. The process had tired her out more than she had planned it to.
Amari let out a dejected sigh. How was she ever supposed to be useful as a medic if she couldn't even heal a single person? What if something happened and more people would be injured? What if someone had life threatening injuries and she was the only one on site? She was too weak, didn't have enough stamina. At times like this she really was jealous of her grandmothers quirk.
"You alright dear?"
Startled out of her musings, she looked up to find her grandma watching her from beside the bed Midoriya had been deposited on. His chest rising and falling at a steady rhythm, reassuring her of his wellbeing.
Biting her lip, Amari debated whether to voice her internal concerns. Her eyes darted between Chiyo and Midoriya before letting out an even deeper sigh as she let herself fall backwards on the bed she was sitting on.
"Grandma, what use am I if I can't even properly patch up one single person?"
It was silent for a moment before she felt the bed dip beside her. Turning her head, she saw that her grandma was now also stretched out on the bed next to her, her hands folded on her stomach, eyes staring up at the white ceiling.
God we're so professional
"Your quirk is not the same as mine. You can do so many things that I can't do, that I wish I could do. If someone comes in with quirk exhaustion, in addition to their physical injuries, my quirk could do nothing for them. You however can be there for these patients. Because your quirk takes your stamina, it is only natural you can't heal as many patients as I can. Don't try and compare yourself to me."
Chiyo paused for a second, tone softening.
"You're still so young, Amari. You've just turned 15, no one expects you to be well versed in your quirk yet. You're still growing, your quirk is still growing too. A quirk is kind of like a muscle, you need to train it in order to increase its stamina."
Her grandma patted her knee softly.
"You'll become better at it, the more you practice. I recommended you to the school because I believe in you."
Contemplating her words Amari let out a non-committal grunt. Her grandma was absolutely right, as usual, she knew that rationally. But still, it was hard to believe in oneself when everyone expected her to do well. And feeling like she couldn't live up to those expectations.
"Uhhhh"
They both whipped their heads to the now awake and uncertain looking Midoriya.
Chiyo scraped her throat and hopped off the bed smoothly, Amari scrambling to do the same, nearly falling off the bed in her hurry.
"Hiiii Midoriya-kun" She raked a hand through her disheveled hair, stopping halfway as one of her fingers got stuck in a tangle. "How are you feeling?"
His green eyes blinked slowly, still in a sleepy daze. "Much better uhm thank you?" His eyes darted between her and her grandma, trying to figure out which one to thank. Finally settling for awkwardly bowing to both of them from his sitting position in bed.
"O-oh!" Amari flustered "No need to bow it was nothing. Besides, Recovery Girl did most of the work."
Her grandma rolled her eyes at her awkward granddaughter before speaking up.
"Midoriya, your injuries are taken care off. Due to the after effect of my quirk you'll be feeling a little tired for at least a few hours. You can go home now but make sure to eat something before you go out, preferably something sugary. Also, this is the third time I've seen you here. Please don't make it a habit to be in here."
The poor boy turned bright red in embarrassment, fumbling to get out of the bed and putting on his shoes while shuffling to the door.
"S-sorry I'll try my best" He paused in front of the door, abruptly turning around and bowing low "Thank you for taking care of me. I'll see you tomorrow, Shuzenji-san."
Amari raised a hand in a slow wave calling out a quiet 'byee' to his retreating form.
"...That was harsh grandma."
"Kacchan!"
"Huh?!"
"There's something I have to tell you.." Midoriya's squeaky voice carried to where Amari currently sat crouching behind a tree.
She was just walking to the station she swore, but then she saw Midoriya and Bakugou looking like they were having a talk and she did not want to interrupt. Initially, she had just tried to sneak past them but then she overheard their conversation. She wasn't a big fan of eavesdropping but also... the tea.
"My quirk is something I received from someone else."
Yeah quirks are hereditary duh
"Huh?" Was the eloquent response from the blonde.
"I can't tell you who I got it from. I can't control it yet, it's a borrowed power that I haven't made my own yet."
OH okay this was definitely not her business and she should just move on quietly. Tentatively, she peered from beside the tree to see Bakugou looking ready to commit murder and she quickly retreated behind her tree again, the bark digging into her back uncomfortably. She couldn't risk him spotting her and then being exploded. She was too young to die.
"That's why I tried to beat you without using it." Midoriya continued. "But in the end, I couldn't win and had to rely on it. I've still got a long way to go. That's why one day I will make this quirk my own and beat you with my own power."
Maybe if she was really careful she could sneak back and take a detour or something.
"What the fuck are you talking about?" She startled at the raw undiluted aggression in Bakugou's voice. "Borrowed power? You're just talking nonsense. Are you trying to make a fool out of me? More than you already have?"
Now this piqued her interest again. When had Midorya, sweet gentle Midoriya, made a fool out of big bad Bakugou? She had gathered they went to the same school before attending U.A. and had some bad blood between them. But why?
"What are you trying to say?" The blonde continued but this time with an unmistakable waver in his voice. "Today I fucking lost to you... When I watched that ice guy I thought I couldn't beat him. Damn it! I even ended up agreeing with what that pony-tail girl said. But I'm just getting started too! I will become number one!"
Suddenly Amari understood the blonde just a little bit better. She understood why Bakugou was behaving towards Midoriya the way he was. He had probably always been the best, always undoubtedly stronger. And now he had gotten his ass handed to him possibly for the first time in his life and he didn't know how to cope.
And suddenly she felt guilty for listening in on a clearly private conversation.
She let out a sigh as she crawled over the ground, between bushes, back to where she had come from. Huffs of annoyance sounded as her hand scraped over a particularly angular stone.
"Young Shuzenji, what are you doing?"
She froze in horror at being caught eavesdropping by no one other than All Might himself. What must he think of her? Plastering on a smile she smiled sweetly at the hero.
"I was looking for my train pass, I think I dropped it here somewhere."
For effect she started patting the grass around her, pretending to search for her pass.
"The pass is in your phone case."
Internally, she cursed herself and her transparent phone case. Externally she put on a faux surprised look.
"Oh would you look at that. There it is indeed. Silly me. Thanks for the help, you're truly a hero haha!"
And then she ran off like a maniac.
Okay so this is basically what I was gonna paste after chapter 2 but then forgot about so have a mini-chapter I guess.
