Shuzenji Amari had a love-hate relationship with her quirk.
She adored being able to help and heal people in a way few others could. If a child scraped their knee, she would always step in and heal it to the best of her abilities. Seeing a child's frown turn into an excited grin was a reward in its own.
She hated the expectations placed upon her from the moment she developed her quirk. With a grandmother as famous as Recovery Girl, and a father as capable and well known in the medical field as hers, it was intimidating to know she was expected to live up to their standards.
But more importantly, people often felt entitled to the help of healing quirk users. For example, when a classmate at her middle school would get a papercut they would turn to Amari for a quick fix.
Whether they didn't know about the stamina it cost her or they simply didn't care was something she wondered about often.
Her quirk after all was rather selfless in nature.
"Amari-chan, look!" She stared in bewilderment as her least favorite classmate thus far shoved his little arm in her face, a mildly disturbing grin on his face. The glint in his eyes made her take an extra step back.
As soon as she had entered the classroom, flanked by Mina, the little purple haired boy had sprinted towards her, nearly barreling into her had she not moved to step back in time.
"Uhhh Minato-kun, was it?" She had honestly not bothered to remember his name "What am I looking at?"
"It's Mineta actually, but you can call me Minoru!" He waggled his eyebrows at her in a way that made her take yet another step backwards. "I have a bruise, look."
Squinting her eyes she could just managed to see the teeniest tiniest splotch of blue, near his elbow, she had ever laid eyes upon.
"Ah yes, Mineta." At that his shoulders slumped slightly "Why are you showing me this?"
His eyes glinted in excitement as he pointed at her smugly.
"So you can heal me, of course!"
She stared at him blankly for a few seconds as a shiver crept down her spine. Attempting to process the situation and find a way out of it without offending her classmate. Were it any, literally any, other member of the class who had asked her she would have said yes without hesitation. The little boy in front of her and his perverted ways quite frankly gave her the creeps.
"Ah uhh well you see." Her eyes darted around the room anxiously for a way out.
Mina, bless her soul, sensing her discomfort stepped in front of her. "I'm sure such a bruise won't kill you. Now scram."
She shooed him away with one hand, not sparing another look at the grape boy, as she used the other to grab Amari's wrist and tugged her towards her seat.
"Mina!" Amari clutched Mina's hand in both of hers, eyes shining with admiration. "You are my hero."
The pinkette laughed at her friend's dramatics.
"Anytime, but you gotta learn to stand up for yourself, girl. Seriously, people like Mineta are not worth your time and attention."
Amari looked down at her shoes, suddenly awkward. She knew she needed to stop letting people walk over her but some part of her was hardwired to try to be nice to everyone. Afraid that if she said no to something, people would cast her aside.
"Move out of the way, you extras."
She had to jump out of the way as the explosive blonde barreled past her, not even glancing in their direction.
In a way she was envious of his confidence and fuck everyone attitude.
"Wow can he get anymore rude?" Mina scoffed, narrowing her eyes in Bakugou's direction.
"Why do you force us to sit with him during lunch again?"
"Kirishima is nice."
"I suppose."
"Your costume looks so nice, Shuzenji!"
Amari looked down bashfully, fidgeting with her hands.
"Thank you Uraraka-chan, my grandma designed it for me. Yours looks really nice as well!"
In fact, every single costume the girls had looked nice. She felt a little plain standing in between them.
"Oh that's so sweet of you." The brown haired girl gushed, hands on her cheeks.
They were currently stood in front of the school, waiting for the bus to come to get them to some school owned building off-campus where they would be performing rescue training. Due to the nature of the training, Aizawa had, to her great joy, decided that she should be joining the hero kids.
It was nice to spend time with the rest of the class and her being able to join in some of the hero activities every now and then made her feel a little bit less alienated from the rest of the class.
This was the first time she actually had the time to observe everyone in their hero costumes. She had to say, her class sure cleaned up nicely.
"Ah Shuzenji-san, won't your hair get in the way, though?" Midoriya inquired.
Her eyes widened, one hand rising to touch her hair, confirming that she had indeed forgotten to tie it up. She usually wore a hair tie on her wrist for this exact purpose, as her grandma wouldn't let her near the nurse's office with her hair not tied back. But in all the excitement of a school trip she had completely forgotten to bring it this morning.
"Oh no! I have one in my bag, I'll be right back. Please tell Aizawa-sensei I'll be right back."
At that Amari speed-walked back to the school in a hurry. Since Aizawa nor the bus was here yet she supposed it would be alright.
She slid into the dressing room swiftly, quickly digging through her bag for the spare hair tie she always kept in the front pocket for situations like this.
With a little effort, she managed to tie her hair into a semi-decent looking ponytail before jogging back to the group.
She cursed softly as she saw that the bus had already pulled up and her classmates were starting to get on.
She slowed down to a fast walk when nearing the bus, not wanting to be panting when she got on the bus, smiling apologetically at Aizawa who rolled his eyes at her in apparent annoyance. She really should start increasing her stamina because this was just sad, then again running was a lot of effort and she wasn't a big fan so maybe not.
Her eyes wandered around the bus, trying to find an empty seat. She refrained a groan as she saw the only free seat was next to Bakugou. Of course it was, no one else would dare to sit next to him.
Without making eye contact she took the seat as quietly as she could, her back straight.
She heard him scoff but he didn't say anything to her luckily.
"Midoriya-chan." Amari, along with at least half of the class looked towards Asui as she addressed her shy classmate rather loudly.
"A-ah yes A-Asui?" He responded shakily, obviously not pleased with all the attention on him.
"Call me Tsuyu-chan."
"R-right"
Amari shifted in her seat, slightly twisting to be able to peer at Midoriya, mindful not to touch Bakugou.
"Your quirk is like All Might's."
Sometimes she wondered if the amount of time her classmates spent talking about quirks was unhealthy.
Midoriya flailed his hands in the air awkwardly.
"Y-you think so? But I'm uh, well uh-"
"Wait a sec Tsuyu." Kirishima interrupted "All Might doesn't hurt himself every time he uses it, it just looks the same."
In Amari's opinion both of their quirks were just punching things very hard. It was impressive sure but not very flashy.
"But it's nice to have an augmenting quirk, you can do lot's of flashy stuff." The redhead continued. "My hardening's strong but doesn't look like much unfortunately."
"I think it looks super cool." Midoriya said earnestly.
Kirishima smiled at the compliment before scanning the bus.
"If we're talking about flashy and strong it's gotta be Todoroki and Bakugou ,right?"
The blonde next to her scoffed as he stared out of the window, probably salty about being looped in with Todoroki.
Boys and their ego
"Bakugou's always mad, he doesn't seem like he'll be popular." Asui said simply.
She sure had guts, saying that in his presence.
"What the hell? Do you want to fight?" He snapped, standing up in his seat, leaning slightly over Amari, causing her to duck in her chair as she tried to keep the distance between them at a max.
"See?" Asui deadpanned.
"We haven't known each other that long so it's kind of amazing that we already know that your personality is flaming crap mixed with garbage." Kaminari declared confidently.
Amari bit on her lip to keep the corners of her mouth from tilting up.
"What's with that vocabulary, bastard? I'll kill you!" Bakugou was literally shaking in anger, small sparks popping around his fists. He looked at her as his elbow hit her upper arm, but she looked down at her phone resolutely. His teeth audibly grinded as she felt his glare on her.
"And you" Her eyes snapped to his "always ignoring me and turning up your nose at me. Think you're better than me, huh?!"
She took in a shaky breath, eyes wide at the predicament. She had tried so hard to not offend him that she apparently offended him by doing exactly that.
Her mouth opened to retort as her teacher's voice echoed through the bus.
"We're here, stop messing around." Aizawa sighed, surely regretting his choice of occupation.
Amari snapped her mouth shut again, averting her eyes to the window to see they had indeed arrived.
As soon as the bus came to a stop, Amari shot out of her seat and briskly walked out of the bus, eager to get away from the intimidating blonde who's glare she could feel burning in her back.
"Everyone! I've been waiting for you." The cheerful voice of a person clad in a sort of astronaut suit greeted the class as soon as they had all dismounted the bus.
"The space hero: Thirteen!" Midoriya squeaked out somewhere on her right.
The building they were standing in front of was absolutely massive. She wondered exactly how much money their school had... and if they were willing to share some with her.
"Come, let's go inside." Thirteen ushered them all inside as they marveled at the looming structure.
Holy shit
The building looked impressive on the outside but the inside was on another level. The inside consisted out of several different simulated landscapes to allow them to practice in different environments. In the middle of it all sat a fountain to tie it all together.
If she became rich she also wanted a fountain in her house she decided.
"It's just like Universal Studios Japan!" Kirishima exclaimed on her left, several classmates nodding in agreement.
"A shipwreck, a landslide, fire, windstorm et cetera. It is a training ground that I made with different types of disasters and accidents. The Unforeseen Simulation Joint or USJ for short." Thirteen explained.
Interesting choice of name
Aizawa and thirteen exchanged a few words, too soft for her to pick up but Aizawa looked severely annoyed.
"Let's see" Thirteen captured their attention once more. "Before we begin let me say one thing, uh two-three things, or maybe four, perhaps five."
Thirteen shouldn't become a TED speaker.
"Everyone, I am sure that you are aware of my quirk Black Hole. I can suck up anything and turn it to dust."
Amari nodded along with her classmates, pretending she did indeed know this hero like the rest apparently did.
"You've been able to save people from all kinds of disasters." Midoriya cut in, in his fanboy mode.
"Yes, but it is a power that can easily kill." That seemed the wipe the smile from most of her classmates faces. "In a superhuman society, personal quirks have been certified and strictly managed so it doesn't seem like a problem at first glance. However, don't forget that many quirks can easily kill. Here, you will learn to use that power to not harm others but help them instead."
Amari shrugged, she was pretty sure her quirk did not fall in the 'able to kill' category. She clapped politely as her class busted into applause for the space hero's speech.
"Now then" Aizawa interrupted with yet another sigh. "Let's start-"
A crack sounded as the lights in the facility shut off. Amari froze as she looked around in confusion. Was this part of the training?
Her eyes focused on the fountain as it sputtered out, a strange purple mist forming next to it.
"What's happening ribbit?" Asui asked their teachers.
Aizawa's back, normally slightly slouched over, was pin straight and his eyes wider and more alert than she had ever seen them as his eyes darted around.
"Gather together and don't move. Thirteen, protect the students."
Amari felt a cold shiver running down her spine as the realization dawned upon her. This was not part of the training.
A pale hand emerged from the purple mist, followed by a young man with faded blue hair and entirely too many hands stuck on his body. After him emerged a throng of what only could be described as shaggy looking villains.
"Don't move. Those are villains." Aizawa reached for his goggles, pulling them down as he angled himself between the still steadily growing group of villains and his students.
She sucked in a sharp breath, hands trembling as she took a step back, bumping into an equally scared Mina. Her friend send her a small reassuring look and reached out a hand that Amari grabbed, grateful for the slight comfort it provided. Even though she could feel Mina trembling just as much as she was.
This was real
