AN: This chapter was very difficult to get right and I ended up rewriting two different scenes
Near the Creek, South Side of Isla Sorna, 6/29/1998, 11:29
'ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR'
Harry froze as the rex's eyes locked onto his, he was surprised that there was no malice on the creature's face just a warning. Somehow Harry knew the rex was not interested in him or Nick, it was more concerned about the kill it had just made.
"Back away from it... slowly," Harry whispered as he pulled Nick by the arm and backed them through the thick jungle, the creature's eyes never leaving them. It took two heavy steps forward, putting its powerful body between them and the downed stegosaurus and gave another deafening roar.
'ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR'
"W-we gotta get out of here!" Nick exclaimed sounding utterly terrified.
"We will just relax and walk backwards, it won't attack us unless we attempt to move towards the kill," Harry whispered in a calming voice.
"Are you i-insane!" Nick hissed in alarm as the rex roared again causing the man to drop his camera in fright.
'ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAR'
"It doesn't care about us, it is protecting its kill," Harry muttered quietly as he scooped the camera off of the ground and slowly backed them away from the rex's kill, keeping his eyes focused on the animal.
Somehow Harry knew the T-rex was much more concerned about the seventeen-thousand-pound stegosaurus carcass he had just killed, as opposed to the two humans, which would barely be a mouthful for the massive dinosaur.
Harry's thoughts were interrupted by another familiar albeit unwelcome sound from deep in the jungle to his left.
'ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR'
"I take it you have a mate," Harry muttered to the rex as he continued backing them away from the rex who was still watching him intently.
"I'm out of here!" Nick exclaimed as he ripped his arm out of Harry's grip and ran through the jungle as the sound of tree limbs snapping grew closer.
"Coward," Harry snorted as he felt the ground shaking under his feet signalling the other rex was almost here.
Harry wasn't surprised when another T-rex even larger than the one standing in front of him appeared on the trail and approached the green one standing over the fallen stegosaur.
This new rex had the same colouring on her scales as the T-rex he had seen on Isla Nublar, it was a greyish-brown colour though she had black markings along her back.
Nick had already run across the road before this new rex had even shown up, making it easier for Harry to slip away unnoticed. Harry grinned when the female approached the kill and gave him a chance to retreat.
In all the confusion the green rex had taken his focus off of Harry and onto his mate. Harry used the opportunity to slip into the jungle and make his way towards the cars before crossing the path when he was out of sight of the rexes.
Throwing his head back and sniffing the air, Harry made his way through the dense jungle his nose easily picking up the smell of Hermione's shampoo on the wind. He made his way through the thick cycads noticing how quiet this part of the jungle was, the tyrannosaurus' presence had scared off every other animal in the area.
The fact that he felt calm surprised him, he felt alert sure but he wasn't scared. Some part of him could tell that the rex was not a threat to him as long as he kept his distance.
Before the rex had taken the stegosaurus was a different story, when the rex was in hunter mode, anything was fair game and it would have gone for the easiest prey it could. Unfortunately, humans were the easiest prey on the island at the moment.
After it had made a kill, Harry knew the rex had gone into protector mode and would not leave the carcass for anything.
As Harry's continued walking, he noticed his senses seemed much more attuned than they ever had before. He was starting to wonder if this was a side-effect of his new animagus form.
Harry felt almost at home in the thick jungle, something about it just felt... right
Harry finally found the others after about five minutes of walking, he heard Hermione's voice carrying over the quiet jungle and followed the sound knowing the others were bound to be with her.
"We have to go back for Harry!" Hermione's voice hissed from just ahead of him sounding like she was starting to lose her temper.
"He was with me near the rex, I figured he would have followed behind me when I made a run for it," Nick said sounding like he was still pretty shaken up.
Harry crept toward the sound of their voices, he pushed his way through some cycads and saw the group crouched down behind a fallen tree. He saw Hermione first as her hair was easy to identify, the others plus a redheaded woman Harry assumed was Sarah Harding were crowded around her. It sounded like Ian was trying to talk Hermione out of going back to rescue him.
Harry slipped through the jungle making his way over to them, he was coming up behind them, they seemed oblivious to his presence. He almost felt like he was hunting them, some part of him was driving him to move softly and not draw their attention. Strangely, he could smell subtle odours coming off of them that stirred something primal inside him.
"We have to go back for him!" Hermione hissed again before she started to stand up but Ian grabbed her arm to stop her.
Harry was now about eight feet away from them and was actually surprised they hadn't heard him approaching yet, if he had been a dinosaur they would be dead by now.
"He can take care of himself, the last thing you want to do is approach that kill," Ian whispered to her
"He's right, Hermione, anything that goes near that kill is going to have a bad day," Harry said casually making his presence known and causing the five people to jerk in alarm and spin to look at him.
"Harry you're okay!" Hermione exclaimed before jumping up and wrapping him in a bone-crushing hug.
"I'm fine Hermione, now come on, let's get back to the cars," Harry whispered before tossing the camera to Nick (perhaps a bit more forcefully than necessary).
"You're Sarah?" Harry asked looking at the redhead curiously.
"I am, I take it you're Harry?" she asked offering her hand.
"I am, glad we found you, poor Ian was losing his mind with worry," Harry said as he shook her hand.
"He always worries," Sarah sighed shooting Ian a fond look.
"Alright let's go, try to be quiet when we get back to the trail," Harry whispered to the group as he started walking through the jungle.
The walk back to the cars was tense, they could hear the rexes eating noisily through the trees, the sound of flesh tearing and bones snapping echoed through the still forest making Hermione look a bit nauseous.
They weren't that far from the cars and within ten minutes were all climbing into the cars, Hermione sighing loudly in relief as soon as her door shut.
As soon as Harry got into the car, he turned to Nick and stared him straight in the eye.
"If you ever pull some shit like that again, I will feed you to the damn dinosaur!" Harry hissed as he turned the engine over and shifted into reverse.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't know the camera w-was getting low on film," Nick said quietly.
"It almost got us killed, the only reason it didn't was because the rex was guarding his kill," Harry scowled as he backed down the narrow road to a spot just wide enough to turn around and made a three-point turn before waiting on Eddie and the others to fall in behind them.
"You ran off and left me there," Harry scowled having to reign in his temper before he ended up punching the man.
"There was another one coming and I just panicked," Nick admitted still looking very pale.
"That was the female if I had to guess. I believe the first roar was him calling her," Harry said as the other car turned around and Harry started heading down the trail.
"I didn't believe you when you told me how big they were," Hermione admitted from the backseat as they started crossing the plains again, seeing a lot more herd animals out and about than before.
"Those two were bigger than the one I saw on the other island. I believe they were all three from the same hatching, so that kind of makes sense," Harry said thoughtfully as he turned up the road that led to the cliffs.
"I can't believe Hammond didn't mention we were going to an island full of dinosaurs," Nick muttered as he shakily lit a cigarette and rolled down his window.
"Would you have believed him if he had?" Harry asked as he rolled his own window down.
"No, I would have thought he was nuts," Nick admitted, the road getting steeper as they started climbing the mountain.
"The jury is still out on whether he is or not," Harry chuckled
"Well they can't get much worse than the T-rex," Nick said as the nicotine seemed to be calming him down somewhat.
"Just wait until you meet a raptor," Harry muttered as he pulled up beside the trailer, noticing a campfire burning about twenty feet from the trailer door.
"Who built that?" Hermione asked as the other car pulled up and parked beside them.
Harry watched Sarah Harding jump out of the other car and start freaking out about the fire before he and the others slowly got out of the car and joined the group
"Who built the fire?" Harry asked as the others got out of the car.
"I don't know but we have to put it out! The smell of burning wood could have detrimental effects on our research," Sarah exclaimed.
"Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If anything it should keep them from coming up here to say hello, fire is a natural deterrent for most animals," Harry shrugged as he opened the door to the trailer and stepped inside
"H-hello?" a teenage girl exclaimed in surprise as Harry entered the kitchen area.
From the look of the kitchen, it appeared she was in the process of making dinner, judging by the mess all over the counter.
"W-who are you?" Harry asked a little taken aback to find someone in the trailer.
"I'm Kelly," The girl said as if that explained everything.
"Harry," Harry said distractedly as he looked at the mess, wondering if this was her first time cooking.
"Are you a scientist?" Kelly asked curiously pulling him from his observations.
"No, I'm more like security for this trip. Did you build the fire?" Harry asked as he reached into the small fridge to get the bottled water he came for.
"Yes, I was cooking dinner," Kelly answered.
"We have a stove," Harry pointed out.
"It wouldn't light, I think the gas is turned off or something," Kelly explained as she set the pan she had been holding onto the counter.
"Alright, but I guess the more important question is, what are you doing here?" Harry asked as he leaned against the counter and looked at her expectantly.
"My dad is on this island, I figured I would come along and help with his research," Kelly explained looking nervous.
This confused Harry a little as the girl appeared to be of African American descent and everyone in their party was white. Harry hoped she hadn't stowed away on the wrong trailer or something as that could seriously complicate matters.
"Who's your dad?" Harry asked warily.
"Dr Ian Malcolm," Kelly said as the man in question stepped inside and cursed under his breath when he saw the girl standing in the kitchen.
"Oh boy, I think you're in trouble," Harry chuckled having hardly ever heard the man swear before.
"Indeed, I think I'll take it from here, Harry," Ian said in a tone of forced calm as he led his daughter further into the trailer.
"I'll just be... outside," Harry muttered before stepping out of the trailer, Sarah darting inside before he could shut the door.
"Who was in the trailer?" Hermione asked in confusion.
"Ian's daughter," Harry answered with an exasperated look.
"Oh I do not want to be her right about now," Hermione muttered as a thunderous sound carried to them from the ocean.
"What is that?" Hermione asked as the sound steadily got louder.
"Sounds like a helicopter," Eddie said as he lifted a pair of large binoculars to his eyes.
"Sounds like a bunch of them," Harry corrected.
"Whoa, there has to be over a dozen of them!" Eddie said as he looked through his optics.
"Ludlow's harvest team came earlier than Mr Hammond predicted," Harry muttered as helicopters with vehicles dangling underneath them came into view on the horizon.
"He sent in another team?" Eddie exclaimed.
"He didn't send them, we were here to stop them from coming," Harry explained.
"But those are Ingen choppers," Eddie argued.
"Mr Hammond is no longer in charge of Ingen, those choppers were sent by the new chairman of the board, Peter Ludlow," Harry elaborated as Ian came out waving his arms, trying to get the chopper's attention.
Leaving Eddie to watch the choppers, Harry came over to stand beside Ian as he continued to wave frantically at the choppers.
"Why don't you just radio the boat?" Harry asked, not hearing Eddie's car leaving as the chopper's thumping drowned it out.
"I can't figure out how to get the damn radio to work," Ian scowled after the choppers had flown over their head.
If it weren't for the international wards over Costs Rica, Harry could have apparated them to the mainland. As it was, he would end up splinching himself if he tried to apparate into Costa Rica.
"I Can fly you there if I have to," Harry offered.
"On what?" Ian asked looking at Harry suspiciously.
"Broomstick, it would be at least a two-hour flight, maybe more with a passenger," Harry said a grin crossing his lips.
"I would rather not do that unless I have to," Ian said not looking thrilled at the prospect of flying on a stick over the open ocean.
"Alright, keep trying the radio. I'll go check out what the choppers are all about," Harry said amused at Ian's expression when he mentioned flying on a broomstick.
"No need, Nick and Eddie just rode out to take a look," Hermione said from right behind him making Harry jump in surprise.
"I've told you not to do that," Harry exclaimed with a look of annoyance on his face.
"Situational awareness, Harry," Hermione smirked.
"Instead of scaring the life out of me, why don't you do something useful?"Harry grumbled.
"Like what?" Hermione asked still looking amused.
"Do you know anything about radios?" Harry asked in a serious tone.
"A bit," Hermione admitted.
"Try and contact the boat, Kelly does not need to be on this island," Harry said all humour gone from his features.
"Alright, I'll see what I can do," Hermione said before going into the trailer where Kelly and Sarah were still cleaning up.
"Do you think she'll manage to contact the boat?" Ian asked as he pulled a hip flask from his pocket and took a swig, the smell of scotch drifting to Harry on the wind.
"If anyone can, it's her," Harry shrugged as he opened the bottle of water he had been holding for the past ten minutes and took a deep drink.
Twenty minutes later Hermione came out with a reluctant-looking Kelly following behind her and nodded to Harry.
"The boat is about a mile off of the coast he'll meet you where he dropped us off," Hermione said.
"How did you talk to him, you don't speak Spanish?" Ian asked in confusion.
"Kelly knows enough and there is a Spanish to English translation book in the trailer," Hermione shrugged.
"Well we had better get going," Ian said sounding very relieved.
"I want to stay," Kelly complained as Ian led her to the car.
"No, I am getting you back home so I can ground you for the rest of your life," Ian said matter of factly.
"But dad," Kelly whined.
"Didn't you just complain I never punish you, well you're definitely getting your wish after this little stunt," Ian said and shut the car door before she could reply.
"Don't be too hard on her, Ian," Sarah said as she came up to the side of the car.
"You should probably stay here with Sarah while I run them down to the river," Harry said as he gave Ian and Sarah some privacy.
"Alright, just try not to run afoul of that rex again," Hermione said as Ian and Sarah embraced before Sarah went back into the trailer.
"I guess they're ready to go," Harry said as he turned towards the car.
"Just be careful," Hermione called to Harry's retreating back as he climbed into the driver's seat.
"I will, you do the same," Harry called back as he turned the ignition over.
"Is that your girlfriend or something?" Kelly asked from the backseat as Harry shifted into gear and pulled onto the road
"No, Hermione is more like my sister," Harry chuckled as they began to pick up speed.
"I am surprised Lex let you go off on an island adventure with her, Hermione is a very pretty girl," Ian smirked, seeming to be in a better mood now that they were about to catch the boat.
"She used to get really jealous of Hermione but she got over that when Hermione started dating Cedric," Harry shrugged.
"So how did you stow away in the R V?" Harry asked looking over his shoulder at Kelly.
"Storage compartment in the second trailer," Kelly admitted unable to see Ian shaking his head in disbelief.
"I don't suppose you have your passport with you?" Ian asked as he looked back at Kelly.
"N-no," Kelly said in sudden realization.
"Looks like we'll be stuck in Costs Rica until I can have it mailed to us," Ian sighed.
"Do you have any cash?" Harry asked.
"A couple of hundred dollars and a Discover card," Ian shrugged.
"I can give you a few hundred bucks a lot of places don't take credit cards," Harry pointed out as he shifted so he could reach his wallet and fished out three one-hundred-dollar bills before passing them to Ian.
"Harry I can't take your money," Ian protested.
"Yeah you can, just pay me back when we get back to California," Harry said as he slowed down to make the turn onto the road leading to the river.
"Thank you," Ian said gratefully as he took the bills and slipped them into the top pocket of his black shirt.
"Just get her off the island, I have a feeling things are going to go wrong very soon," Harry said as he pulled off the road and parked about twenty yards from the river.
"There's the boat," Kelly said pointing down the river.
"Good, the Baryonyx lives in this river and I would rather not run into it," Harry muttered darkly making Ian snort at the memory.
"The one on Nublar really had it out for you," Ian said as the boat blew its horn.
"Tell me about it, you two had better get going," Harry said as the ramp on the front of the boat started to lower.
"This is goodbye for now," Ian said as he offered Harry his hand.
"Be careful," Harry nodded as they shook hands
"We will, watch out for Sarah for me," Ian said as he got out of the car.
"I will," Harry promised.
"Bye Harry," Kelly said as she got out of the car.
"Take care, Kelly," Harry said to the girl's retreating back as she followed Ian down to the waiting boat.
Harry watched as the ramp was lowered enough for them to clamber onto the barge
Harry waited until the boat was backing down the river before starting the engine, idly he noticed a familiar crocodile-shaped head breaking the surface on the other side of the river, watching the boat as it headed out to sea.
"I'm out of here," Harry thought as he backed up to the road and floored it back the way he came from.
Idly he noticed a lot of activity on the plain, the place was full of running dinosaurs with vehicles pursuing behind them. Massive cages were already full of captured dinosaurs and they seemed to be in the process of capturing a triceratops, though judging by the crumpled vehicle, it was putting up a good fight.
Harry pulled into their campsite to find Nock and Eddie had returned and both of them looked furious.
-We have to do something!" Harry heard Nick exclaim as he stepped out of the car.
"There has to be more than thirty of them down there," Eddie argued.
"So, all we have to do is wait until dark and sneak into their camp," Nick shrugged.
"And what open all the cages," Eddie snorted only to stop when Nick just stared at him.
"Harry, you're back, did they make it to the boat okay?" Hermione asked worriedly pulling Harry's attention away from the two men's argument.
"Yeah, we got there just fine," Harry assured.
"Good, Sarah went down to check out that other team, she took the dirt bike," Hermione said.
"We have a dirt bike?" Harry said in confusion.
"Yeah, it was in a rack on the rear bumper of the trailer," Hermione shrugged.
"Knew I should have checked the trailer out more thoroughly," Harry grumbled.
"Did you see what they're doing on the plains?" Nick asked cutting into Harry and Hermione's conversation.
"Yeah, I saw them from the road on the way back, it looks like they are catching dinosaurs to stock a new park," Harry nodded.
"We have to do something about it," Nick said looking incensed.
"So we just go down there tonight and let them out," Harry shrugged, hoping the dinosaurs running amok in the harvest team's camp would set their project back a bit.
"My thoughts exactly," Nick said looking pleased.
Harry knew this would probably cause major problems for them but he actually agreed with Nick on this, they had to do something.
Though after that fiasco with rexes earlier he would go with the photographer so he could keep an eye on him. The man had already proven he was prone to making poor decisions. It was best Harry went with him to prevent the man's poor decision-making from getting them killed.
"I know that look, we're about to go on an adventure, aren't we?" Hermione asked in a tone of resignation.
"We are but first, let's get some lunch I'm starving," Harry said with an innocent smile.
"You had better not get me eaten," Hermione warned not pleased with his answer.
"Don't worry Hermione, it will be a walk in the park," Harry assured her as he led her into the trailer.
'At least I have Hermione with me this time around,' Harry thought to himself as the group headed into the trailer to scrounge up some lunch, Hermione still shooting him a look of annoyance.
