Northside of the Isla Sorna, 6/29/1998, 14:39
Howard King was starting to get frustrated with his boss, they had collected the blood samples from eight more species around the compound. Adding that to the two they already had, that made ten. That still wasn't good enough for Lewis, no Lewis Dodgson had decided they were now going deeper into the island to try and find more samples to the south.
The boat would be returning at sundown which still gave them six and a half hours to collect more samples but it made him nervous going this far away from the rendezvous point.
Even more worrying was the large group of choppers that flew in a couple of hours ago. King did not want to run into any of Ingen's people as that could make things messy, legally speaking.
Howard finished storing the filled collection vials and reloaded the probe with a fresh vial. Turning around in his seat, Howard checked the clipboard he had been writing down the names of the dinosaur species they had collected samples from so far.
Species Collected
Brachiosaur-F
Utahraptor-K
Gallimimus-T
Triceratops-F
Hadrosaur-F
Compsognathus-K
Herrerasaurus-T
Segisaurus-K
Troodon-T
Howard looked over the list and sighed, three of the animals had died when Lewis took blood samples. His boss didn't seem to care that the needle they were using was the size of a spear to some of the smaller dinosaurs. The needles were made to punch through thick hide and were designed to collect rapidly and were far too large for animals smaller than an elephant.
On the upside the larger dinosaurs didn't seem to notice when Lewis took their blood, the needles prick not even registering on their pain receptors. Lewis did almost get gored by the triceratops but that was more about him getting too close than the prick of the needle.
"Species number eleven," Dodgson said as he came to the car carrying a pair of large white eggs.
"What species?" Howard asked warily.
"Velociraptor, there is a whole nesting site in the woods a few hundred yards into the jungle" Lewis grinned as he dug out two specialized styrofoam boxes designed to hold eggs and keep them warm and undamaged in transport.
"Does that mean we aren't going south?" King asked hopefully.
"Oh we're still going south, there is a T-rex somewhere on this island," Lewis said as he climbed into the driver's seat and checked the gas gauge.
"While we're stopped here, why don't you top of the gas tank?" Lewis asked seeing they were below half a tank now.
'I am really starting to hate this job,' Howard King thought to himself as he hefted the heavy five-gallon can of gas into position.
King felt sweat begin to run into his eyes as he poured gas into the funnel he had placed in the gas port of the Land Rover. It took almost ten minutes but finally, he emptied the can and chunked it to the ground.
'Now let's go deeper into this dinosaur-infested hellhole,' King thought morosely as he climbed into the air-conditioned cabin, scowling at Lewis who was eating a sandwich and looked perfectly at ease.
Twenty minutes later they came to a stop as a herd of stegosaurs were blocking the roadway and Lewis slammed the brakes before hastily putting the car in park and leaping out the door.
"Is the probe loaded?" Dodgson asked excitedly.
"Yeah, I loaded it when we-
'Coooooo-oooooh'
That almost familiar call was all the warning Howard got before the herd of stegosaurs honked loudly and charged up the road towards them, making the ground shake, Howard saw Lewis sprint into the forest and made to follow him but it was too late.
Howard tried to open his door but he didn't have time as a massive stegosaurus came along his side of the Land Rover forcing its way through the jungle on the side of the road and preventing him from opening his door.
The dinosaur pushed the branches aside with ease but was forced to shift to the right in order to avoid a massive tree trunk
Unfortunately for Howard King, this meant the side of the seventeen-thousand-pound dinosaur slammed into the side of four thousand pound car.
It was like being hit by a wrecking ball, the whole passenger side of the car buckled inward before it was violently rolled onto the driver's side and then onto the roof before the passenger side of the car slammed onto a tree. The car came to rest on the other side of the road crushing down jungle foliage as the mini fridge broke loose from its mounts and slammed into the ceiling of the cab.
Howard was tossed around the inside of the car like a ragdoll during the rollover. His head had smashed through his driver's side window as the car rolled on its side causing shards of glass to slice through his scalp.
The second roll was no better as his head smacked against the B-pillar and then slammed into the metal roof hard enough for him to lose consciousness for a minute or two.
Howard regained consciousness an indeterminate amount of time later most likely woken by the sound of large animals thundering down the road next to him. Their large hoof-like feet kicked up huge clouds of dust as they tore down the dirt road. Every so often, a stegosaurus would bump into the car, jarring him around as the car tried to flip over onto its other side. Thankfully, the tree the car was pressed against prevented it from rolling over again but that was little comfort to Howard at the moment.
Howard was barely aware of what was going on around him, his vision was very blurred and he could feel blood running down his face. There was unimaginable pain radiating from his left flank and he felt sick to his stomach. He didn't know how badly he was injured but he knew he wouldn't be walking away from this.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the thundering footsteps ceased and Howard shakily looked out the shattered window. Dust still hung in the air but now everything was still and eerily quiet.
Taking a deep breath in preparation for the pain he knew was coming, Howard rolled over onto his stomach, screaming as the muscles in his sides contracted painfully over the injury.
Very slowly he crawled out of the driver's side window and onto the road, his side was hurting with every movement of his arms making it hard for him to draw breath.
'Cooooooo-ooooh'
Howard jumped as he heard the call again, it sounded similar to the ones on the north end of the island just softer in pitch.
Still laying on his belly, Howard turned his head in the direction he heard the sound coming from and audibly gasped in alarm. He could see an animal standing in the middle of the road a good thirty feet away. The dinosaur was slowly approaching him, bobbing its head with every step it took, almost like a bird would. It noisily scented the air making guttural growling sounds as it scanned the area seeming to be looking for something.
Howard could tell it was walking on two legs and stood about six feet tall but that was about it. His vision was still very blurred from the blood running into his eyes and the multiple knocks he had taken to the head probably didn't help matters either.
Howard tried to get up but an agonizing pain tore through his chest causing his arms to give out causing new pain to shoot through his side when he slumped to the ground.
Howard was now fairly certain he had shattered a few ribs in the crash though at the moment that was the least of his problems. The dinosaur was steadily coming closer and one feature seemed to come into focus,
Howards could clearly make out a raised sickle-shaped claw on both of its feet as it came to a stop about ten feet in front of him.
His breathing sped up as he realized exactly what this was, he was looking at a velociraptor one of the deadliest dinosaurs on Ingen's list. At that moment Howard realized what it was they were after.
Howard was jerked out of this realization when he heard the sound of squeaking metal and rolled painfully onto his back.
Looking back at the rolled-over Land Rover, Howard saw another velociraptor perched on top of the car looking down at him. At this distance, he could make out the animal's curled lips and razor-sharp curved teeth as it stared down at him with angry yellow eyes.
'Cooooooooooo-ooooh'
Howard jumped again when two more raptors come out of the jungle on the other side of the road, their teeth also bared and their green eyes focused on him, unlike the other two who were a reddish colour, these two were a brown colour and slightly larger in height than the other two.
Howard tried to roll back onto his stomach but the raptor on the car leapt on top of him, sinking its six-inch toe claws into his chest and crushing the rest of Howard's ribs under its weight.
Unfortunately for Howard King, this did not kill him... well not instantly. While the two raptors that came out of the jungle wiggled their way into the car in search of their eggs, the raptor that landed on top of him leaned down and began to feed.
Howard screamed in agony as the raptor began biting into parts of him that were not crucial in keeping him alive. His nose and ears were the first to go with careless snips of the raptor's jaws the razor-sharp teeth bit through the cartilage as the raptor tore the flesh away from his face.
Everything went black by the time the raptor that had been watching from the road had joined the one perched on top of his chest. The second raptor hadn't been as patient as the first and had immediately bitten a large chunk out of his arm. This was it for Howard, the pain of the attack was too much and he passed out seconds before he slipped into death's merciful embrace
It was just lucky for Howard King that he had succumbed to blood loss before the other two raptors had dug their eggs out of the wrecked car. Otherwise, they would have bitten off something that would prevent him from mating, as the raptor was a vengeful creature and one does not mess with their young.
Lewis Dodgson watched from a hundred yards away as his assistant was devoured by a pack of velociraptors.
Those raptors he now realized, were what had caused the stegosaurs to stampede in the first place.
He had just barely avoided being crushed by the car as he fled into the jungle. He had climbed up the side of a mountain on the east of the road and waited for the animals to pass by the downed car.
Lewis was about to return to help Howard when he saw an animal that he instantly recognized approaching the wrecked car and stayed where he was, watching through his pocket-sized binoculars.
He watched on in horror as his assistant was slowly eaten alive and gripped the handle pistol in his left hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Deciding it would be a good idea to put some distance between him and the raptors, Lewis began walking into the jungle. He knew that he wasn't far from the southern plains and there was no way he was going back the way he came, there were a lot more raptors around the compound.
Lewis began forcing his way through the dense foliage walking parallel to the road along the base of the mountain
Thanks to how high up he had climbed, he could still make out the road pretty easily over the dense vegetation. Granted walking on the steep incline was tiring it still help him orient himself using the road.
After an hour of walking like this, he decided it was safe enough to return to the road, he knew he could move a lot faster there as so began making his way down the steep incline.
Lewis made it to where the ground flattened out he practically ran the test of the way to the dirt road. If he had been paying more attention, Lewis would have noticed the large shadows following him through the trees not twenty feet away.
Lewis could see the jungle opening up a few hundred yards down the dirt road and began walking much faster, he was desperate to get out in the open as the jungle was giving him the creeps.
Lewis was really was devastated at the loss of his assistant, Howard King was fairly competent at carrying out just about any task and was much more talented at genetics work than Lewis ever was. Lewis had also grown to care for the younger man and had considered him one of his only friends.
Lewis had trouble making friends, this was not helped by the reputation he had built over his many years at Biosyn. Sadly, most of those rumours weren't lies made up by the jealous. No, he couldn't deny even to himself, that he would trip his own grandmother over a cliff if it would benefit him.
Even now he was more upset that this mission had gone tits up than the death of Howard King. The rig was ruined and all of the samples he had collected today were probably shattered in the rollover. There still might be a chance to salvage something as he had seen the Ingen choppers flying over his head a little after noon.
Lewis was pulled from his thoughts as he turned a bend in the road and saw wide open plain ahead of him. Breathing a sigh of relief he made to step forward only to have something massive slam into his left side and hurl him into the side of a tree on the other side of the road.
The pistol he had been holding was sent flying from his hand upon impacting the tree and he vaguely heard it land somewhere in the jungle.
Lewis landed in a crumpled heap at the base of the tree and cried out as he felt agonizing pain shoot through his left leg.
Lewis slowly sat up, leaning his back against the tree and paled when he saw the three utahraptors step out of the jungle on the other side of the road.
Lewis tried to get up but it was too late the raptor in the middle crossed the road in a heartbeat and plunged the twelve-inch toe claw into his stomach.
Lewis Dodgson experienced pain like he had never felt in his life and let out a guttural scream as the raptor ripped its foot back spilling his intestines into his lap.
Lewis saw darkness on the edge of his vision, and was only vaguely aware of the massive dinosaur leaning over him, he vaguely realized its eighteen-inch long jaws were on either side of his head as he smelled its putrid breath.
The last thing that Lewis Dodgson ever saw was the open maw of the red-feathered utahraptor as it closed its jaws hard, crushing his head like a ripened tomato.
Little did Lewis Dodgson know that his decision to flee south had just condemned many others to violent deaths as the raptors had decided that these strange hairy creatures were a danger to their hatchlings.
Eastern Side of the Southern Plains, Isla Sorna, 6/29/1998, 15:39
Roland Tembo and his best friend Ajay were walking along an animal trail going deep into the jungle off of the southern plains.Ajay had accompanied him on many hunting excursions throughout the years though admittedly neither of them had ever been part of anything like this.
Currently, they were following rex tracks hoping to find the trophy of a lifetime at the end of this trail. Somewhere in this jungle was one of the largest predators to ever walk the earth and he wanted to test himself against it.
'COOOOOOO-OOOOOOH-AHHHHH'
"What was that?" Ajay asked gripping his rifle tighter.
"Sounded like a bird, getting a bit jumpy aren't we?" Roland chuckled as he continued walking down the path.
Truthfully, the sound had the hairs on the back of Roland's neck standing on end, something about the call sent a shiver down the seasoned hunter's spine.
Roland followed the trail for a good half-mile until it led into a wide spot, the ground was littered with all manner of bones, and flies were buzzing all over the place, the sounds of their wings filling the air. The trees here were so thick it looked like twilight and the smell of rotting flesh hit him in the face making him want to retch.
In one corner of the clearing was a mound of sticks and leaves piled up forming a massive nest, Roland could actually make out a large brown egg tucked away in the centre.
The sound of bones crunching pulled him from his observations and he quickly found the source of the noise. On the other side of the nest standing about three and a half feet tall was a tyrannosaurus rex hatchling. It was tearing chunks of meat from the leg of some large hoofed herbivore then throwing its head back and swallowing the meat whole.
"It's a hatchling," Ajay said as he swatted a fly that had landed on his shoulder.
"Its parents must be close," Roland said thoughtfully as he tried to figure out the best way to use this to his advantage.
'ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAR'
"I-I think they know we're here," Ajay said his voice going up a few octaves as overwhelming fear filled the experienced hunter.
"No, it smells that," Roland said as a massive animal approached them from about thirty yards down the trail.
"What is that, I've seen the Ingen list that's not on it," Ajay whispered as he cycled the bolt on his Winchester Model 70 and brought it up to his shoulder, pointing it at the large raptor-esque dinosaur.
The animal was large maybe nine or ten feet tall with a mohawk of red feathers on its head, its jaw was long and narrow and it was approaching them almost lazily.
"It wants us to see him," Roland said in realisation he brought his Searcy double rifle up to his shoulder and took aim.
Neither of them noticed the raptors to the left and right of the trail that were stalking them through the dense foliage.
'COOOOOOO-OOOOOOH-AHHHHH'
"It's been following us this whole time," Roland muttered in dawning realisation as he began to squeeze the trigger only to freeze when a large head with a mohawk of blue feathers came out of the jungle to his right.
Roland froze as the animal stared at him, he forgot about everything around him as the raptor's upper lip curled exposing a mouthful of curved teeth They locked eyes for a split second, the yellow eyes of the raptor seemed to look into his soul and fill him with fear, primal fear like he had never experienced in his life.
Roland cursed when he realized he had taken his focus off of the dinosaur with red feathers, remembering the creature when Ajay's rifle fired. Roland looked to his left in time to see the raptor with red feathers leap into the air and land on Ajay, its sickle-shaped claws slipping into Ajay's chest and coming out of his back as his friend collapsed under the animal's immense weight.
Roland had barely processed this, before the raptor he had just been staring at lunged forward and latched her jaws over his head, snapping his neck from the force of the impact as she slammed Roland's lifeless body into the ground.
'ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAR'
The utahraptors hastily left the area knowing the animals approaching were not creatures they wished to anger.
They had other prey to hunt, this whole side of the island smelled like these hairy murderous creatures after all.
AN: I've been itching to write this chapter since I wrote chapter two.
