South Side of Isla Sorna, 6/29/1998, 17:36
Harry and Nick crouched down observing the activity down at the Ingen camp from their position high up on the ridge line overlooking the plains.
The Ingen team had certainly been busy, though Harry was curious why they didn't just ship the animals out now while they still had daylight. After all, nighttime is when a lot of predators come out to hunt (particularly the rexes). Keeping all of those herbivores in one spot was akin to ringing a giant dinner bell for every carnivore on the island.
"They only have herbivores in the camp," Harry said after he scanned the cages for the third time just to make sure.
"Yeah though that one with all the horns looks like it will be a handful," Nick said as he snapped a few photos through the long-distance lens.
"That's a triceratops, even the rexes won't mess with them," Harry agreed.
They both froze as the sound of a two-stroke engine reached their ears, it seemed to be heading their way along the ridgeline trail.
Looking in that direction, Harry saw the outline of a dirt bike moving towards them along the ridgeline. The headlight was lit up, and the bike itself was tall with blue and yellow plastic fenders, The rider seemed small in comparison to the bike and was wearing a full-face helmet.
It didn't take long before the bike came to a stop in front of them, Sarah had to hang her left leg off of one side of the bike so it didn't tip over when she stopped (as the bike was too tall for someone that only stood five-foot four-inches tall). Harry watched her awkwardly hold the bike up with one foot on the ground before she slid her other leg off and rested the bike on its kickstand.
"We have a problem," Sarah said as soon as she took off her helmet.
"What's up?" Harry asked looking over at the redhead warily as he knew that statement never boded well.
"I sighted three large dinosaurs I didn't recognize coming down from the north. I also followed the island road out towards the village compound and found... I found two bodies," Sarah said looking very troubled.
"You're serious?" Nick demanded looking alarmed.
"Yeah the first one was still fresh, it was being fed on by a flock of compsognathus but they didn't kill him, whatever killed him left the body without eating it," Sarah explained looking nauseous at the memory.
"And the second?" Harry asked.
"There wasn't much left but bones but it was also a fresh kill and was next to a rolled-over Land Rover," Sarah explained.
"So you have no idea what killed them?" Nick asked.
"The first man's skull was crushed and he was disembowelled, it looked like a raptor of some type killed him. There was a single deep slash across his abdomen which is indicative of a raptor kill. That being said, a velociraptor's jaws aren't large enough to crush a man's skull like that," Sarah elaborated.
"How far north?" Harry asked in alarm remembering Mr Hammond's warning about going too far north.
"Not fifty feet up the road that heads north out of the plains," Sarah answered.
"Thank god, Mr Hammond warned me not to go too far north on the island, there might be still utahraptors North of the river," Harry said sounding relieved.
"A utahraptor could have carried out that attack," Sarah argued as a look of worry crossed her features.
"According to Mr Hammond, they are all contained in the north," Harry argued though something in the pit of his stomach squirmed when he realized she had a point.
"So were the raptors on Isla Nublar," Sarah pointed out.
"Then let's go see for ourselves," Harry sighed knowing in his gut that she was probably right.
"Fine but we'll take the bike," Sarah said.
"Are you going to be okay here?" Harry asked Nick as he got to his feet.
"Yeah, I'll be fine," Nick said unconcernedly.
"Alright, the keys are in the car, tell the others we'll be back before sundown," Harry said to Nick who nodded never looking away from his camera
"Can you drive a motorcycle?" Sarah asked hopefully as he walked over to the bike.
"Oh yeah, my godfather is a big fan of motorcycles," Harry said as he threw his leg over the bike noticing the KTM decal on the plastic gas tank.
Harry squeezed in the clutch handle before kicking the starter over, the engine roared to life sounding like a deranged bumble bee trapped in a tin can as he twisted the throttle back.
"Good, because the bike is too damn tall for me," Sarrah complained as she clambered on behind him.
Harry lifted the kickstand with his right foot before putting it back on the ground and pushed the shifter down with his left foot. Harry was surprised when he eased out on the clutch and started turning the throttle back as the front wheel started lifting off of the ground.
Grinning Harry shifted gears and wound the throttle out, impressed at how fast this little bike was as he tore across the ridgeline.
Harry quickly followed the trail back towards the trailers before heading down the road that led to the plains.
Harry followed the road running parallel to the river as he crossed the plain, hoping to avoid notice from the Ingen team. On the long straightaway along the river, Harry pushed the bike as fast as it would go, Sarah's arms gripping his chest tighter when he hit the powerband.
"Slow down," Sarah shouted over the wind as the road that went around the east side of the plain merged into the road he was on.
Nodding Harry let off the throttle as the road entered the jungle, Harry slowed down as they came upon the body being fed on by dozens of little chicken-sized dinosaurs and skidded to a stop about twenty feet away from the body.
"What are you doing?" Sarah asked as he dropped the kickstand and killed the engine.
"We should probably figure out who that guy is," Harry said as he approached the body, the little dinosaurs scattering as soon as they sensed his approach.
There was a strange smell coming off of the man, it was hard to describe. It was similar to a velociraptor but... muskier.
The man hadn't been dead for more than a few hours, though his face was already almost completely gone. The smell of the fresh meat stirred a part of him that he quickly pushed down, focusing on the task at hand.
"Odd, they didn't react at all when I came through," Sarah said as she watched Harry rolled the mutilated body over and dug out a wallet from the man's back pocket before flipping it open and taking out a California driver's license.
"This guy's name was Lewis Dodgson, there is also an I.D in here for some company called Biosyn Genetics," Harry said before slipping the license back into its slot and pocketing the wallet.
"Biosyn, they are a company similar to Ingen," Sarah said in a thoughtful tone.
"Guess they wanted to clone their own dinosaurs," Harry said before jerking when he heard a noise coming out of the jungle ahead of him.
Harry felt a pull towards the sound, he could tell this was another of those strange instinctive feelings he'd been having since he arrived on the island. Harry stepped forward into the trees almost without conscious thought, as the sound called to him. Listening closer, Harry thought it sounded like the chittering of birds.
"Harry, where are you going?" Sarah demanded as she hurried to catch up to him as he pushed his way into the jungle
"I hear something, don't you?" Harry asked distractedly as he kicked something plastic on the ground with the toe of his boot.
Looking down he saw a black square-shaped pistol lying in the mud. Curiously, he stooped down and picked it up reading the words Austria stamped into the barrel end of the slide.
"Do you know anything about guns?" Harry asked Sarah who was watching him.
"A bit," She admitted.
"Good because I don't, you take this," Harry said as he handed her the pistol before he continued to follow the chittering sound.
"I still don't hear anything," Sarah said worriedly as they started walking down an incline towards a stream that was running down from the north end of the island
Harry froze and looked at her oddly, "you can't hear that?" Harry asked in surprise as the chirping was getting pretty loud.
"No, all I hear is the creek," Sarah said as they stepped around a bend and entered a small clearing tucked away in some large trees that hung over the stream.
"It's a nest," Sarah said in awe as four tiny little brown dinosaurs poked their little heads out of the nest and chittered at them excitedly.
"Food"
"Food"
"Food"
"Food"
Harry jumped, he could hear the word food echoing in his head every time they chirped. It wasn't like parseltongue where he could mistake what they were saying for English. It was very... strange and there was nothing he could really compare it to, all he knew was their tiny voices were echoing in his head every time they chirped.
Some part of him could understand what these dinosaurs were saying, and with a sudden realisation, he knew what part of him that was and how dangerous it was for them to be here.
"Come on Sarah, we need to get out of here, Now!" Harry said in an urgent tone as the little velociraptors kept chirping at the strange visitors.
"Why?" Sarah asked in surprise as she was in the middle of snapping pictures of the hatchlings with a disposable camera.
"These are velociraptor hatchlings, I don't want to be here when mom and dad come home," Harry said sniffing the air for any hint of another animal nearby.
"Right," Sarah said as she pocketed her camera and gripped the pistol tightly in her hand.
"They're not close by but they won't leave them alone for long," Harry assured her.
"Okay, let's get back to the bike," Sarah said as she started walking back the way they came in from.
Harry started to follow her when something bumped into his leg.
Looking down he saw green eyes looking up at him, the eight-inch tall raptor hatchling was bouncing on its tiny legs and chittering excitedly at him.
"Oh no you don't little girl, you get back into your nest," Harry chuckled and was a bit surprised when the little raptor scampered back into the nest before chittering at him beside the other three, their little heads watching him over the mound of leaves and sticks.
"How did you do that?" Sarah asked in surprise having watched the interaction with amusement.
"I'm part raptor," Harry said matter-of-factly as he lead them back toward the bike, the scent of adult raptors carrying to him on the wind telling him they had left just in the nick of time.
"Seriously it was almost as if it understood you," Sarah said as they forced their way through the dense jungle foliage.
"She understood me perfectly," Harry assured her as they stepped out onto the road noticing the little dinosaurs were feeding on Lewis Dodgson again.
"Whatever, let's hurry I don't want to be on this part of the island after sunset," Sarah said as Harry kicked the bike into life.
"Agreed, but I want to check out the other attack site on the way north," Harry said as Sarah tucked the pistol into her waistband and clambered on behind him.
"Let's ride," Sarah asked after strapping her helmet.
"Alright, hold on," Harry grinned as he let out the clutch and tore off down the road.
The area reeked of raptors, the Land Rover was maybe a mile from the place where they had found Lewis Dodgson. The car looked like it was hit by a semi and was flipped over on its top pressed against a tree. A pile of cloth, gnawed bones and other inedible parts of some poor man were covering the road in front of the car and the ground around the remains were soaked in blood.
"This guy was eaten by velociraptors," Harry said as he examined two-toed tracks in the dirt.
"But what did this to the car though?" Sarah asked as she crawled into the car and looked through the wreckage.
"Something big maybe a triceratops, Harry suggested as he found a chewed-up wallet in the pile of remains and opened it finding another I.D card for Biosyn Genetics.
"His name was Howard King," Harry muttered as Sarah crawled back out of the wreckage holding a green nylon shoulder bag.
"I found a tranquillizer gun with a dozen darts and empty vials for collecting blood samples," Sarah said as she held up a funny-looking pistol before tucking it inside it the bag and throwing the strap over her shoulder.
"So they were trying to collect blood from dinosaurs?" Harry asked.
"Most likely, the rig had a cold storage unit so I guess they were collecting blood for DNA," Sarah replied as she pulled the helmet over her head
"Good, let's get going," Harry said as he started the bike again and waited for her to climb on behind him.
Harry waited for her to adjust the shoulder bag before letting out the clutch and heading deeper into the jungle.
Harry was driving a bit slower now as the road was narrower and there were quite a few turns in the road, after about fifteen minutes the trees opened up to another wide open area and Harry could make out a large complex. As tempted as he was to stop he knew that they were running out of daylight. He followed the road through the field before the road led into another stretch of jungle where the road was much narrower than before.
"There is the north river," Sarah said loudly pointing to the left.
Harry nodded as they passed by the river, he could just make out the head of a large crocodile-like animal and suspected it was the suchomimus Mr Hammond had mentioned.
They rode for about five more minutes after passing the river before they came to a dead end with a massive steel fence blocking off this entire stretch of the island.
Harry stopped the bike on the paved area in front of the fence, noticing the same musky scent hanging in the air that he had smelled around Lewis Dodgson.
"Let's be quick," Harry said as he killed the engine and put the kickstand down.
"I know," Sarah said as she kneeled down and picked up a shard of broken glass off of the cracked concrete.
"Whatever was in there is out now," Harry said as he approached the hole in the fence.
"What are you doing?" Sarah asked when she saw Harry slipping into the hole in the fence.
"Checking things out," Harry called back as he stepped onto the clearing on the other side.
"You know what lives in here, don't you?" Sarah asked as she crawled through the fence behind him.
"They're not here right now," Harry said confidently as he stepped further into the clearing, noticing blue feathers littering the ground.
"How do you know that?" Sarah asked, following Harry as he approached a trail leading into the cycads.
"Because whatever lives here killed Lewis Dodgson not two hours ago," Harry explained as he heard a familiar chittering straight ahead of him.
"How do you know that?" Sarah asked.
"I can smell the creatures, they have a unique musky smell," Harry replied as the chittering got louder.
"You are very strange," Sarah muttered as they kept walking down a narrow animal trail.
"I've been told," Harry chuckled as they stepped into a tamped-down area with a large nest in its centre.
"We're in another nest," Sarah said in slight alarm.
Harry ignored her as he noticed something in the nest watching him and slowly approached but stopped when he saw a small raptor hatchling with blue feathers on its head laying on the ground near the nest.
"Oh no," Harry whispered as he knelt beside it and gently placed his hand on it only to realise it was dead.
Harry jumped when another of the creatures leapt from the nest and bared its tiny fangs at him.
"Go away!" The little raptor hissed angrily.
"I mean you no harm," Harry said as he looked into the creature's eyes not knowing his own had shifted to a yellowish green colour.
"Creature like you killed my nestmate!" Another raptor hissed angrily from over the top of the nest its yellow eyes boring into him.
"He was not with me," Harry said as the first raptor chick came closer sniffing him suspiciously.
"What are you talking about, Harry?" Sarah said from a few feet away looking at him in confusion
"A human killed one of the utahraptor hatchlings, if I had to guess I would say it was Lewis Dodgson," Harry said as he slowly slipped the man's wallet out of his vest pocket. and pulled out Dodgson's driver's license.
"Was this him?" Harry asked showing the baby raptor the picture on the license.
"Yes!" Both raptors chirped in unison.
"He is dead," Harry said jumping slightly when the hatchling lunged forward and sank its teeth into the picture on the license.
"The elders killed him?" The hatchling in the nest asked sounding hopeful.
"I think so," Harry answered as he stood up.
"We should go," Harry told Sarah as he walked away from the nest the raptor still chewing on the driver's license made to follow.
"Stay with your nestmate, the island is a dangerous place for hatchlings," Harry told the raptor as he and Sarah began leaving the clearing.
"How did you do that?" Sarah demanded as the little raptor stopped following them and made its way back over to the nest.
"I told you, I'm part raptor," Harry said only to come to a stop as he sensed something moving in the ferns just up ahead of them
"There are other raptors here," Harry whispered as he scented the air.
"I thought you said the adults were gone," Sarah said in alarm.
"They are," Harry said as he saw something moving through the dense undergrowth.
"Then what do you-
Sarah was cut off as a raptor with red feathers stepped out onto the path, it stood about four feet tall and maybe ten feet in length.
"It's a juvenile," Harry muttered as a rattling growl sounded behind them and another red feathered juvenile stepped onto the path.
"Trespasser!" The raptor in front of them hissed angrily, the animal's growls sounded very similar to that of a velociraptor.
"We are leaving," Harry said in a calming voice.
"Did you harm the hatchlings?" The raptor behind them demanded with a guttural growl in his throat.
"No, the hatchlings are safe," Harry assured them realizing these two were seconds away from mounting an attack.
"You are still in our nest!" The one behind them hissed, curling his lips back to expose razor-sharp curved teeth.
"We are leaving," Harry said in an even tone.
"No, you will be our first prey," the one in front of him growled as it crouched low preparing to lunge at them, the one behind them mirroring its sibling's actions.
"No, we won't" Harry hissed in annoyance as his head began stretching in length.
Harry heard Sarah gasp beside him as he transformed into his animagus form before her eyes. Where a six-foot tall man had been standing a second before, now stood a six-and-a-half-foot tall velociraptor. His scaley skin was a reddish brown colour with long black tiger-like stripes running down his back. His height hadn't changed much but his body was close to twelve feet in length.
The raptor in front of him hissed in surprise and darted back into the jungle, fear of a larger predator taking over the inexperienced raptor. Spinning his body around, Harry found the raptor behind them had scampered as well.
Closing his eyes, Harry quickly shifted into his human form much to his partner's astonishment.
"Come on before more youngsters show up," Harry said as he took Sarah's hand and guided the shocked woman towards the gate.
"H-how did you do that?" Sarah demanded when they stepped out of the jungle and could see the fence across the small clearing.
"Magic," Harry said as he led her towards the hole in the fence.
"There is no such thing as magic," Sarah said shakily.
"I can prove you wrong later, we have a little over an hour to get back and the utahraptors are out hunting," Harry said as he started up the bike.
"So that guy Dodgson killed the baby utahraptor?" Sarah asked as she shouldered her bag and climbed on behind him.
"Yes, and now the adult raptors are on the warpath," Harry nodded as let off the clutch and made a quick U-turn in the wide area in front of the fence.
Once he was turned around, Harry tore down the road shifting through the gears as he built up speed. He now knew the utahraptors were hunting near the southern plains and did not want to run into them after dark. Sarah seemed to share his sentiments as she didn't complain about his speed.
He was driving as fast as he could, tearing past the river and out of the jungle on the other side. He caught sixth gear on the road that went around the compound before entering the last stretch of jungle where both attacks had taken place.
Harry had to slow down here as the turns were somewhat tight but it didn't take long to reach the wrecked SUV. When he saw the rolled Land Rover in the distance, Harry skidded to a stop after making a quick decision.
"What are doing?" Sarah asked as Harry put the kickstand down and killed the engine.
"We're taking the car with us," Harry said as he drew his wand from his arm holster.
"We couldn't roll that thing over much less drive it in the shape it's in," Sarah protested.
Harry didn't answer in words, instead, he lazily flicked his wand at the car, to Sarah, it looked as if an invisible force rolled it back onto its wheels.
Harry then cast a non-verbal mending charm and Sarah watched in amazement as the warped and bent and caved-in sides of the car popped out and reshaped themselves to their original form, the caved-in roof popped back up, the pillars unkinking and straightening out and the crumpled side mirrors straightened out, the glass in the mirrors repairing itself before her eyes
The broken glass all over the ground flew into the window openings and reformed back into windows, the cracks in the glass on the spider-webbed windshield melding back into a smooth curved sheet of glass, and the torn and damaged interior panels and the minifridge popped back into place so the inside of the car.
Sarah just stared in amazement, the car looked almost brand new, the only thing that wasn't fixed was the back window for some reason.
"There you see, magic is real," Harry smirked as he opened the driver's door and turned the ignition back to the off position before turning the key over again. The battery was weak but after it spun over three or four times, the engine roared to life.
"You can't be serious?" Sarah asked in disbelief as she touched the driver's window, and looked even more surprised when it felt perfectly solid.
"I am, I can explain in more detail later but we need to get back to the trailer," Harry said as he stepped away from the car.
"Why is the back window not fixed?" Sarah asked.
"It wasn't broken here and the pieces are out of range of the spell. I figured you'd want to drive this back to the cliffs," Harry said as he walked back over to the bike.
"Why are we taking it?" Sarah asked as she climbed into the driver's seat and rolled the window down.
"It may come in handy for the job tonight," Harry said before kicking the starter and revving the engine.
"Alright, I'll follow you," Sarah said as she adjusted her seat.
"Try and keep up," Harry smirked as he let out the clutch, driving slow enough for the larger SUV to keep up with him on the narrow trail.
If he hadn't revealed to her he could do magic then Harry wouldn't have bothered salvaging the vehicle but he knew having more transportation could be useful.
There was also the fact that there was a five-gallon can of gasoline on the rear bumper of the Land Rover that would definitely be useful.
The final reason he had salvaged the car was to prove magic was real. Repairing the wrecked Land Rover had been irrefutable evidence that he could in fact do magic and it saved him time explaining later on.
It didn't take them long to come out of the jungle and Harry sped up winding out the gears, the Land Rover doing a very good job of staying with him as he followed the road they had taken earlier along the river.
They pulled up in front of the trailers as the sun was starting to set, noticing that Eddie and Nick were out by the fire cooking something over it.
Harry killed the engine, stretching his arms over his head before getting off the bike.
"Where on earth have you been and where did that come from," Hermione demanded as she stepped out of the trailer her arms crossed over her chest in annoyance.
"There was an attack in the jungle on the other side of the plains, Sarah and I went to investigate," Harry said tiredly.
"And the Land Rover?" Hermione pressed.
"I'll explain later," Harry muttered.
"Dinner's ready," Nick called as he pulled the large pot off of the coals and began carrying it into the trailer.
"Is the stove broken or something?" Harry asked as Nick passed him and the smell of chilli wafted his way.
"No, the guys didn't didn't hook it up," Eddie scowled.
"Figures," Harry said as he followed them in his stomach growling reminding him that all he had eaten today was a power bar.
Twenty minutes later and the pot of chilli was gone, Nick had done an excellent job as everyone had gone back for seconds.
"So what did you find out about the attacks?" Hermione demanded getting everyone's attention.
"The utahraptors are on the loose, some bloke from Biosyn Genetics killed one of their hatchlings and the utahraptors killed him and his partner," Harry explained.
"U-utahraptors, there are utahraptors on this island?!" Hermione demanded looking horrified.
"Yes, they have a nest on that little peninsula at the northern point of the island," Harry said pointing to the map on the wall.
"As if the tyrannosaurus rexes and velociraptors weren't bad enough!" Hermione exclaimed incredulously.
"Yes my thoughts exactly, so we should all be on high alert tonight, the utahraptors were in the jungle just to the north of the plains," Harry sighed.
"And all we have is that air rifle," Eddie exclaimed.
"Not exactly, we found another tranquillizer gun and a pistol," Sarah said as she pulled the pistol from her waistband and ejected the magazine.
"That could be useful, what caliber is it?" Eddi asked looking pleased with this revelation.
"Ten millimeter," Sarah said as she read the caliber designation stamped into the slide.
"Well that packs a pretty good punch but it would probably just piss most of these dinosaurs off," Nick pointed out.
"And it's only a ten-round magazine," Eddie said as he looked it over.
"It's better than nothing," Harry shrugged.
"True, I think we should probably get into position soon to set the dinos loose in the Ingen camp," Nick said pulling a small set of bolt cutters from his bag.
"Yeah, You're with me but somebody has to stay with the trailer," Harry said.
"I'll stay, I need to set up the high hide anyway," Eddie spoke up.
"Good, Me and Nick can take the bike and you two can take the Land Rover," Harry said as he headed out of the trailer.
Deciding it best to relieve the Land Rover of its valuable cargo before they left, Harry unfastened the jerry can from the bumper and set it on the ground by the trailer. Just in case they were forced to ditch the Land Rover during the trip to Ingen's camp they wouldn't lose the gas.
"We'll follow you," Harry told Sarah as he walked over to the bike.
Harry started the bike and waited for Nick to climb on behind him.
If all went to plan they should be back in an hour, Harry just hoped there were no complications. Harry almost snorted out loud at that though, he had done things like this before and he knew there were always complications.
'Let's just hope this works out better,' Harry thought as Sarah and Hermione pulled out onto the road and he followed behind her.
As much as Harry hated going out at night like this, he knew they had to free the dinosaurs before those idiots could ship them to the mainland.
AN: Fun fact, in the movie the point on the island that I have the Utahraptor paddock was where the trailer was parked. My version of the Lost World is completely reversed.
