South Side of Isla Sorna, 6/29/1998, 21:29
Harry led the group towards the west side of the camp, turning off his headlights so they wouldn't be seen. They came to a stop when they could see the portable stadium lights in the distance.
Sarah pulled up beside him so Harry was looking in through Hermione's window.
"Leave the car when you're done. Just make sure they can find it easily," Harry said as he tossed Dodgson's wallet onto the dash.
"Then how will we get back?" Sarah asked while Hermione gave him a calculating look.
"Hermione can pop you both back easily enough," Harry whispered so Nick could hear not that he was paying much attention to the others anyway.
"I can't, Harry," Hermione said looking alarmed.
"She already knows about our abilities," Harry assured his friend.
"But the staute-
"Don't worry about that right now, just apparate the two of you back when you're done opening the cages," Harry said cutting her off mid-sentence.
"Fine Harry, but we will be talking about this later," Hermione huffed.
"I figured as much," Harry chuckled as he stepped off of the bike, just noticing that Nick was already standing in front of the Land Rover.
"What are you two talking about?" Sarah asked in obvious confusion.
"Hermione will fill you in," Harry said.
"Are we ready?" Nick asked excitedly as he removed a set of bolt cutters from his backpack.
"Yes, we'll go to the east side and slip away into the jungle and follow the river back towards the cliffs. You two go in from the west side of the camp," Harry said looking over at the two women who didn't seem to share Nick's enthusiasm.
"Alright, let's get to it," Nick said sounding impatient now.
"You two be careful," Harry said giving Hermione a meaningful look.
The walk towards the camp didn't take very long, Harry was surprised he had little problems seeing in the low light, he could even make out Hermione and Sarah a few hundred yards away as they made their way into position on the other side of the camp.
The camp was in an area off of the eastern side plains, the camp in a wide valley with large rock formations on either side of the camp. They weren't that far away from the creek they had visited that morning.
Near the treeline, there were large lights set up on tall poles that looked down on the large cages the animals were being held in.
Most of the animals were fairly small with the exception of the triceratops, the stegosaurus and a parasaurolophus that were caged towards the centre of the holding area.
Off on the other side of the holding area was a row of rugged-looking vehicles one of which with a massive dish mounted on it. They could hear loud talking and laughter coming from the men who were seated around campfires in front of military-style tents, from the smell of it they were just finishing up their dinner.
"I'll take the cages, you just disable the vehicles," Harry whispered when they reached the outer perimeter, the sound of gas generators humming loudly over the camp.
"Do you need these?" Nick asked offering Harry the bolt cutters.
"No, I'll be fine just meet me on the other side of the Western rock formation," Harry said before making his way through the cages.
Harry moved as fast as he could freeing the smaller animals as he made his way to the triceratops cage. Harry pulled out the pin on a cage containing a pair of gallimimus before coming to a stop in front of the strongest-built cage in the holding area.
Inside was a bull triceratops, the animal was snorting loudly and pawing the ground nervously when it saw Harry approach. This beast was considerably larger than the female he had seen on Isla Nublar. This one was dark brown with lighter brown markings on its frill.
"Don't worry big guy, I'll get you out of there," Harry chuckled as he waved his wand over the padlock securing the cage.
Not far away Hermione was freeing the parasaurolophus and Sarah was opening the cage containing the Pachycephalosaurus.
As soon as Harry removed the padlock and pulled the cage door open, he opened the cage holding the baby trike next to it. He quickly got out of the area as he heard the cage door thrown open with tremendous force. He started to run when he bumped into the other two next to the stegosaurus cages.
"This is the last two, Harry said as he opened the cage housing the adult stegosaurus.
"Then we have to move, the trike looks ready to blow a gasket," Sarah said as she hastily opened the baby stegosaurus cage and stepped away.
"Take her back to the trailers, Hermione," Harry said as he looked around to make sure the coast was clear.
"You still haven't explained how you're going to-
'pop'
Harry chuckled as Hermione cut Sarah off mid-sentence when she grabbed her arm and apparated them both back to the campsite.
"She is going to be pissed," Harry thought as he made his way out of the holding area.
Harry was glad he had decided to take the other car, if the members of the Ingen camp found it, they would assume their rivals at Biosyn Genetic had sabotaged their project. If they could pull this off without the Ingen team knowing of their presence Harry would consider this mission a success.
Harry quickly weaved his way through the cages to the outer perimeter of the camp, walking along the rock outcropping and avoiding the light cast from the stadium lights shining down on the camp.
As he looked back, Harry saw the animals leaving their cage looking confused or in the triceratops's case, enraged.
Harry heard it bellow its displeasure before the sound of metal crashing against something with tremendous force rang throughout the camp. Harry glanced over in time to see the triceratops roll one of the vehicles over. It rolled three times nearly crushing a group of men seated around the fire before coming to a stop, landing on its side and crushing three of the tents in the process.
Nick must have been successful in his mission, as a thin line of fire ran from the fire pit, across the ground to the visible fuel tank of the overturned truck.
'BOOOOM!'
The sound of a massive explosion rocked the camp and bright orange light illuminated the rock next to him. Harry actually felt the heatwave from over two hundred yards away.
Unfortunately, this caused a chain reaction as the other cars ignited one by own sending the men in the camp running for cover.
Harry thought he was going to go deaf from the sounds of the explosions, the tents were now ablaze and dinosaurs were running amok, the sounds of the explosions sending the usually docile herbivores into a panic. The Pachycephalosaurus, in particular, were causing pandemonium as they slammed into anything in their path to get away from the explosions.
Harry finally slipped around the other of the rock formation and began skirting it on his way to the rendezvous spot.
'Coooooooo-oooooooh-ahhhh'
Harry froze in his tracks as a familiar sound called from the jungle directly ahead of him.
Harry suddenly realized he was being tracked and shifted into his animagus form, he hastily sniffed the air, picking up the musky scent he associated with the utahraptors.
While his senses seemed to improve in his human form, they increased tremendously when he shifted into his raptor form and he could see a blue-feathered raptor watching him in the shadows of the jungle. He smelled another one close by but now the raptor watching him seemed confused.
" Cooooo-ooooooh," Harry called out loudly, conveying his desire not to fight with the much larger raptor.
"Cooooo-ooooooh-ahhh," the utahraptor responded and Harry understood she was telling him to leave now!
Nodding his long snout, Harry took off running around the rock outcropping as more screams could be heard from back at the camp.
Harry heard the panicked yells of the camp's occupants as the dinosaurs trampled through trashing everything in sight as their instincts urged them to flee the area as the fire grew in size, the cacophony of sounds echoing over the plains.
Harry, had to fight his own animal's instincts to flee in panic when he smelled the smoke in the air but forced himself to stick to the plan, knowing he did not want to be here when the other raptors arrived.
Harry couldn't believe how fast he could run in his animagus form, it felt like he could give the dirt bike a run for its money! Harry had not had much time to experiment with this form, having only achieved the transformation two days ago. Now he was learning how truly fast a raptor could move.
Harry made it to the rendezvous point in less than a minute and turned to look for his partner. Harry paled when he saw Nick near the edge of the jungle, he was less than twenty feet from where he had sighted the utahraptor not two minutes ago.
Harry watched as Nick started approaching the rock formation, he was running across the open stretch of ground between the jungle and the rock formation. Nick was two or three hundred yards away and Harry breathed a sigh of relief when he saw his teammate wasn't being pursued.
Harry quickly shifted to his human form and it was like he had taken his eyes away from a set of binoculars, everything seemed smaller and out of focus for about twenty seconds as his senses adjusted. The contrast between his vision as a raptor and his vision in human form was immense. He could still make out Nick running across the tall grass but now he seemed much further away.
Harry stood there waiting for Nick to arrive getting anxious as he heard louder more anguished screaming and the sounds of rapid gunfire coming from the camp.
Harry was brought back to the present when something large lunged out of the jungle. It was making a beeline for Nick and quickly closing the distance, Nick completely unaware he was being hunted.
Harry knew he had to do something, and turned on the spot with an audible 'pop' Harry appeared twenty feet in front of Nick, his wand raised and a spell on his lips
Sadly, he was too late. By the time Harry appeared in front of his surprised teammate, the raptor had already leapt through the air, covering the twenty feet to Nick in the blink of an eye.
Harry watched on in horror as the utahraptor flew through the air and buried both of its long toe claws through Nick's back, taking the photographer to the ground with tremendous force.
Harry cringed when he heard the sounds of Nick's ribs breaking as the fifteen hundred pound utahraptor landed on top of him.
"Stop this!" Harry demanded angrily even though he knew it was too late for Nick who was clearly dead, judging by the look in the man's lifeless eyes.
"How can you speak to me?" The red-feathered raptor growled as fresh screams were heard from the camp.
"Why did you kill him!?" Harry demanded angrily, gripping his wand tightly as rage at the senseless death of his teammate flooded his mind.
"These creatures killed my hatchling!" The raptor hissed just as angrily as it stepped off of nick's lifeless body showing its curved teeth.
Harry couldn't help but notice that its claws glimmered in the moonlight from the dark blood that coated them. The raptor towered over him and he knew it would completely dwarf his animagus form as well.
"One man killed your hatchling, and you already killed him," Harry corrected as he took a few steps back having to crane his head in order to meet the creature's eyes.
"How do you know who killed my hatchling?" The raptor demanded as it stepped closer, its green eyes boring into his.
"I followed your scent to a nest with hatchlings and I asked them," Harry answered preparing to apparate away at the slightest movement from the hostile animal in front of him.
"You have been to my nest!?" The creature hissed dangerously.
"I have, your hatchlings were safe when I left," Harry answered simply.
"Good, but you and all of of these hairy creatures must be killed, they are are a danger to our hatchlings," The raptor called out loudly as Harry heard movement to his right.
"This one is different from the other's blood-Claw," one of the blue-feathered raptors growled.
"I saw him become one of the little claws," The other blue-feathered raptor cooed drawing Harry's attention to his left and noticing her snout was shining red with blood.
"He has been to our nesting grounds," Blood-Claw hissed causing the other two to growl deep in their throats.
"We must kill," The other raptor hissed in fury.
"I do not want to hurt you but I will if you attack me," Harry warned.
Harry barely had time to react as the raptor on his right lunged toward him and he struck it in the face with a stunning charm dropping it to the ground with a heavy thud.
The other blue feathered raptor almost reached him during the distraction and he stunned her as well dropping her to the ground
"You killed my mates!" Blood-Claw hissed in fury.
"They are only sleeping," Harry said as he lowered his wand to his side ready to raise it if the animal moved towards him.
"You may escape us now but we will have our vengeance," Blood-Claw hissed as it eyed Harry's wand warily.
"I mean your pack no harm but I will not let you harm my team," Harry warned as he prepared to obliviate the creatures and send them back to their territory hopefully that could put an end to this mess.
Harry took a deep breath as he slowly lifted his arm preparing to cast the spell only for his wand to be violently ripped from his hand.
Harry looked on in horror as the blue feathered raptor he had just stunned rose to her feet his wand clutched in her mouth before she bit down hard, breaking his wand into three pieces before his eyes.
"Now we can kill him," the female hissed after spitting the broken pieces of his wand out.
Harry looked on in sadness as his mangled holly and phoenix feather wand fell to the earth before white-hot fury flared inside him.
Harry shifted into his raptor form in the blink of an eye and leapt at the raptor who had destroyed his wand. Harry closed the short distance between them before she could react landing on her left flank.
The velociraptor's instincts took over as his toe claws sank deep into her side while he dug all six of his hand claws as deep into her back as he could and slashed them down her sides, his claws slicing through her flesh with ease. The female raptor shrieked in agony as he mounted his attackc, she was completely unprepared for the amount of damage the much smaller animal could inflict.
Harry had to leap away, narrowly avoiding her snapping jaws as she retaliated by twisting her head around in an attempt to catch his tail. Harry landed ten feet away and let out a high-pitched shriek of fury that sounded like the cry of an angry eagle, as he bared his teeth at his opponents.
The smell of her blood was heavy in the air as it ran down her side from the eight deep cuts he had left on her body, The two gashes near her belly were gushing from where his toe claws had torn through her flesh as he had leapt away.
Harry had to control the animal's urge to keep attacking as the other two were preparing to attack him, they were crouching low and preparing to charge him, while the female he had just attacked was already stalking towards him, her long teeth bared and her yellow eyes narrowed in fury.
Harry realized that he had no choice but to retreat or he would be torn apart by the three much larger predators. Harry turned on his heel and sprinted across the plains, heading to where he knew the bike was waiting on him.
His size may have been a disadvantage in a straight-up fight with the utahraptors but He was significantly faster than the much larger animals. Harry quickly left the three utahraptors behind him as he ran flat out towards his dirt bike, steadily putting plenty of distance between him and his pursuers.
There was also the fact that the raptor he had attacked was moving much slower than the other two and they seemed reluctant to leave her behind. Harry doubted the wounds he inflicted would be fatal but she would be walking tenderly for a few weeks.
Harry knew it didn't matter how fast he ran, they would easily track him by his scent. It would be almost to lose them until he got off of this island. He also knew after that confrontation, they would be out for his blood and would not give up hunting him.
He was kicking himself for not apparating away when the other two showed up but he had honestly thought he could send them back to their part of the island. Now he wished he hadn't bothered, the loss of his wand was a devastating blow and he was just glad they had brought Hermione along.
Harry caught sight of the Ingen camp over his shoulder and saw at least two dozen men scattered around the camp trying to put out fires and tending to their wounded.
Harry could also smell the coppery scent of blood in the air as well as a familiar musky scent mixed in, the utahraptors must have already visited the Ingen camp.
Harry ran harder grateful for the fact that his body did not have to exhale, he only had to breathe air in meaning his stamina was increased exponentially. Harry didn't fully understand the mechanics of it but he knew it had something to do with airsacs in his hollow bones and oxygen going straight into his bloodstream, the carbon dioxide exiting through his skin.
Harry quickly crossed the distance between the camp and where he parked the bike taking a second to look back and ensure the utahraptors were still far behind him.
He was relieved when he could make out their silhouettes about a thousand yards back. Unfortunately, they were still following him.
Once he made it to his bike, Harry quickly changed back into his human form and threw his leg over the seat. Harry kicked the starter over and took off dumping the clutch, the front wheel rose high off of the ground as he took off with more throttle than he intended and had to quickly shift to second gear in order to bring his front wheel back to earth. As soon as both wheels were on the ground, Harry wound out the throttle, quickly going through the gears as he tore across the open plains.
Harry pushed the bike to the limit as he made his way across the plains and back to the trailers, his wheels actually leaving the ground over uneven places in the road. He skidded the tires in the dirt as he made the sharp turn onto the road that led up to the cliffs.
Harry finally made it to the trailer only to find their camp in a state of utter devastation. The trailer was rolled on its side and looked as if it had been hit by a tornado.
Hermione, Sarah, and Eddie were out standing beside the trailer and looked to be in the process of hooking it up to the winch on the front of Eddie's car.
They all turned in surprise when they heard him tearing up the road and he skidded to a stop in front of them.
"What the hell happened?!" Harry demanded when he saw the car he had been using earlier that day flattened and looking like a monster truck had just run over it.
"A herd of Parasaurolophus came tearing up the road about twenty minutes ago. Something down there spooked them pretty badly," Eddie said as he began trying to winch the first section of the trailer back onto its wheels.
"Where is Nick?" Sarah asked as she continued to work on pulling the accordion connection between the two trailers off to make flipping over the first section easier.
"The utahraptors got him," Harry said remembering why he had driven up here in such a hurry.
"They what?" Hermione exclaimed in horror.
"They ambushed him on his way out of the camp, I tried to help but I... I was too late," Harry admitted quietly the memory of Nick's dead eyes staring into his flashing through his mind.
"Dammit, can this get any worse?" Eddie exclaimed angrily as Sarah succeeded in freeing the RV from the other trailer.
They all heard a grinding metallic sound and looked on aghast as the second trailer started sliding towards the cliff's edge.
"Hermione don't let it go over," Harry exclaimed but it was too late.
The trailer began to slide faster as the edge of the cliff face crumbled away causing the trailer to flip vertically before disappearing over the side of the cliff.
"Why didn't you stop it?" Hermione demanded as she stared at where the trailer had been seconds before.
Most of their equipment, the radio, food, and spare fuel containers were on that trailer and they all listened in horror as the trailer slammed into the rocks below with an earsplitting.
'CRASH'
"I can't, my wand was broken," Harry admitted having to struggle to keep the anger out of his voice.
"This is very bad," Eddie exclaimed as he turned off the winch and moved the hook to a different cleat near the roof of the RV.
"Why, besides the obvious?" Sarah asked looking inconsolable at what she had just caused.
"Because I left the satellite phone on the kitchen table," Eddie exclaimed angrily as he climbed into the driver's seat and backed the Santana up, his back tires slipping in the muddy earth as the weight of the trailer was far too heavy for the smaller vehicle to move let alone pull upright.
Hermione sighed before casting a discreet feather-light charm on the RV, reducing its weight significantly and enabling Eddie to pull the RV back onto its wheels.
Harry watched as the RV rocked back and forth on its suspension as it was pulled back onto its wheels. Minus the shattered side windows and substantial body damage, the RV looked road worthy.
"We have to get moving now, the utahraptors will be heading this way," Harry warned as he opened the trailer door and looked inside.
Harry was relieved to find the interior in pretty good shape, for the most part. All that was in here was their bunks, the bathroom, their personal effects, and the cockpit.
"How do you know that?" Eddie asked as he unhooked the winch cable and pushed the button on his remote to reel it back up.
"Because they were chasing me, they got Nick and I just barely got away myself," Harry confessed.
"Lovely but where are we going to go?" Eddie asked looking like he was close to having a mental breakdown.
"We have two options," Harry sighed, not liking either option very much.
"All right, Potter, let's hear it," Hermione said in a resigned tone.
"Option one, we go to the compound towards the north of the island and see if we can find a radio there. Eddie can find a way to get it working and we can radio for the boat to pick us up," Harry said grimly.
"That's a solid plan," Eddie said eagerly.
"What's the catch?" Hermione asked shrewdly.
"The velociraptors have claimed the compound as their territory," Harry admitted.
"And the other option?" Sarah asked sounding reluctant to go along with this idea.
"There is a port on the north river that we may be able to find a boat and see if Eddie can get it running," Harry put forth.
"Yes, but we already saw that there is something in that river," Sarah argued.
"Suchomimus, little cousin to the Baryonyx, they are thought to feed on fish but I would bet anything it would go for people if it had the chance," Harry sighed.
"Lovely," Eddie muttered darkly.
"How far does this road go along the cliffs?" Hermione asked.
"All the way to the edge of the plains, before it heads down the back side of the mountains and leads to the compound," Eddie answered.
"I vote the river," Sarah said after thinking about it for a few minutes.
"Agreed," Hermione said looking very anxious.
"Yeah the river sounds like the best plan, if we're lucky the boat may have a radio," Eddie said.
"Alright, so who's driving the R.V?" Harry asked.
"I'll do it," Sarah said as she climbed inside and turned the key over and the diesel engine fired right up much to their relief.
"We'll put the bike on board I doubt there is much fuel left in it," Harry said as he pushed the bike around to the back of the RV only for Hermione to meet him in the opening from the inside and levitate the dirt bike inside.
"So how did you break your wand?" Hermione asked sympathetically.
"A utahraptor bit into it and snapped it like a pretzel," Harry lamented as he climbed into the trailer.
"How did it get so close?" Hermione demanded as Harry guided the bike where he wanted it in the trailer.
"I stunned it and thought it would stay unconscious, turns out the spell is not effective," Harry admitted as he leaned the bike against the wall and put it into first gear.
"I bet you're glad Lex made you bring me along, now," Hermione muttered as Harry hopped back out of the trailer and grabbed the jug of gasoline from the Land Rover before settling it inside the RV.
"Are we ready to go?" Sarah called back to them from the driver's seat, her voice sounding a bit hoarse.
"Yeah, get us out of here," Harry sighed as he climbed inside wishing they hadn't gone down to the other camp now.
Harry knew their problems were far from over but hoped that they could get to their destination before the utahraptors caught up with them. If they couldn't then they were in for a rough time as Hermione was the only one with an effective weapon against them and Harry knew he couldn't catch them by surprise with his animagus form a second time.
'Dammit Ian, you're chaos theory has struck again,' Harry thought idly as the RV pulled onto the road.
AN: I am of the opinion that two people were directly responsible for most of the problems Ian's team had in The Lost World film.
First we have Roland Tembo, he took the baby rex from the rex nest and staked it to the ground. Until recently, I believed Roland had broken the baby's leg intentionally to make it call out in distress. It turns out that Peter Ludlow was responsible that that in a drunken accident. Either way, Roland was just as culpable in the rex needing medical attention (and this was one of the reasons he met the utahraptor so early). Later on in the film, he tranquillized the Rex which led indirectly to the rampage through San Diego. True, Nick unloaded his rifle forcing him to use other means to subdue the rex. Though this still made absolutely no sense to me. What kind of hunter doesn't carry at least a couple of reloads in his vest pocket while hunting dangerous game?
Secondly is Nick Van Owen, I watched a video by Klayton Fioriti on whether or not Nick Van Owen could be considered a villain in the film. While I don't believe Nick is a villain, he was the catalyst for multiple deaths because of his actions. He brought the baby rex back to the trailer, causing the adult rexes to destroy the trailer, and getting Eddie Carr killed trying to save them. Then later on, he sabotaged Roland's rifle and was the reason that the hunter was forced to tranquillise the rex (but as I mentioned before, Roland's own stupidity was equally as responsible).
In short, that was why I decided to right those wrongs in this story, the utahraptors are taking care of my problems... for now. Though from the next chapter onward, they will be filling a slightly different role in my story.*cue maniacal laughter as the screen fades to black*
