I have been having a busy week at work and sadly next week won't be any better, so updates will be slower. I'm going to try and upload one more chapter today and maybe I can do one tomorrow, but my parents are coming to visit, so no promises.
Reviews are always welcome.
Chapter 8 part 4
We sat on my roof for quite some time, trying to find victims we could bomb with our balloons. Morgan's aim wasn't all that great so she barely managed to soak anyone. I was sitting next to the little girl on the roof, hiding as she finally managed to bring down an innocent victim. We did our best not to laugh out loud, but it was hard when mister Stark pointed out the woman we had hit kind of looked better soaked then dry. As I looked over the railing to check if the woman was gone, I noticed a familiar blue car park in the street. Isn't that the Captains car? I looked closer and saw him step out of the vehicle.
Oh no, I can't have this! Not with my boss sitting next to me and especially not after his warning, which left me rather rattled but I didn't get much time to think about as Morgan had shouted from my bedroom she found water balloons. I remembered the look on mister Starks face as he told me about their relationship and I wasn't going to just send him and Morgan away. So I sat back down quickly and got the attention of my boss and Morgan: "Listen up, someone is walking up to this building who we must eliminate. He's a top villain to our water balloon fort. So you better get this right and soak him to the bone!"
Morgan was super excited to soak the Captain, although she didn't know who I was talking about and she quickly grabbed a new water balloon from our bucket. There weren't many left anymore. Mister Stark wanted to see who I was refereeing to, but I stopped him in time and told him to use our biggest balloon for this: "Trust me, you'll need the big guns for this guy."
"Oh someone you know is coming here. Who are is he? A friend? Ex-boyfriend maybe?" he joked and I silently cringed on the inside at the mention of the Captain being my ex-boyfriend. I wasn't sure I wanted to see him as my boyfriend, but ex-boyfriend just didn't have the right ring to it.
"Something like that, just grab them quickly. This guy moves fast" I said and Morgan and her dad graped our two biggest balloons. I looked over the railing and saw the man walking up the stairs. I felt giddy as I realized I was actually leading these two in a playful attack on the Captain.
"You better not fuck this up because you'll only get one change at this," I said and Morgan jokingly said language, what made her father and me laugh. I looked over the railing and followed the Captain as he made his way to my front door. I signaled the two to hold our their water balloons: "Okay ready…bombs away!"
Father and daughter dropped their balloons and immediately looked over the railing to see who our innocent victim was and to see if our attack had worked. The Captain didn't see the two water balloons coming and I heard mister Stark laugh really hard as our balloons hit their mark. Morgan's balloon hit the man right on top of his head, while mister Starks balloon hit his shoulder and socked his shirt partially. Well that's a very fortunate accident. We pulled back as the Captain looked up, but he probably saw us anyway.
"We are so dead," Morgan said seriously and we laughed as she sounded like a teenager who just got caught by her father smoking a cigarette. Mister Stark and I agreed with her, but we started laughing anyway as we heard a very annoyed and slightly angry voice shouting Stark. Mister Stark had to wipe some tears away from his eyes and catch his breath: "I can't believe you just made us bomb that popsicle."
"We are so dead!" Morgan repeated and emphasized her words more as she spoke. It just made us laugh more, but we stopped when we heard the Captain very loudly thanking someone for opening the door. I looked over the railing along with mister Stark and saw the woman who lived below me exit the building. She kept looking over her shoulder to watch the Captain walk inside, probably recognizing him. Great, I don't want my neighbors asking questions too.
"Oh shit, he's coming up," mister Stark said and Morgan told him she was going to tell her mommy if he kept swearing so much. He thought about what she said and then pushed the bucket with the last four water balloons towards her: "Fine I'll watch my words but only if you take down the popsicle."
"Yeah Morgan, go hide and when the Captain comes out, you can use all our ammunition to take him down," I said and the girl smiled excitedly and went to find herself a hiding spot. It wasn't difficult as there were multiple vents on the roof and for some reason an old couch. Who and why it was up here was still a mystery to me and my friends.
"If you miss, I'm not cooking you any food tonight missy," mister Stark called after his daughter and she was quick to point out that he never cooked her found anyway: "Mommy takes care of that."
"Do I even want to ask why he is here?" mister Stark asked me as we waited for the Captain to arrive. Morgan was hiding but we could hear her giggles come from behind the couch, so I doubt the Captain will be fooled by this little stunt. I was saved from providing an explanation as the Captain arrived. One look at his wet hair and mister Stark and I both started giggling like a pair of naughty school children. The Captain was wearing a light blue shirt and it was slightly see threw when wet. Damn, combined with his wet tousled hair, he is looking way to…sexy.
"Oh hello there Cap. I didn't know it was going to rain today? Did you know it was going to rain today Taylor?" mister Stark asked me feigning innocent, but failing miserable at it. I shook my head and bit my tongue to keep me from laughing again and snickered: "No, must be a very local rain shower or something."
"You're going to pay for this," the Captain said with a rather threatening tone but his lips were giving away that he might think this was rather funny. Who knew? I also wondered what his punishment would be, but remembering that my boss was sitting next to me and the Captain's punishment was probably nowhere as good as what I was picturing in my head, I bit the inside of my cheek to forget about it.
"Call it revenge of the nerds," I raised my voice and Morgan came running out of her hiding spot, bucket in hands. She came out running, so the Captain noticed her rather quickly and managed to dodge all her attacks. He even managed to catch one balloon and threw it back at her. It hit the ground right in front of her, so only her shoes got wet. She laughed as the Captain caught her and he pretended to fight with her over the last water balloon. But that's when I heard a familiar car pulling up in front of my building. It was one of mister Starks private cars and I knew this because the engine of that thing was so ridiculously loud. Mister Stark and I looked over the railing saw Happy park the vehicle.
"Call him and tell him to come upstairs," I immediately told my boss, who knew exactly what I was planning. He pulled out his phone and called the man and I called to the Captain and Morgan to save the last water balloon. They looked at each other and then at me curiously, so mister Stark explained: "Happy is here."
"Give it to me," I pointed to the water balloon and the duo walked over to us, while Morgan asked why I got to bomb Happy. I pointed out that she and mister Stark already got to bomb the Captain, what earned them both a light slap to their heads. Morgan giggled as her father told the man not to hit her kid and the Captain in response said he should set a better example to his daughter.
"Oh shut up Cap, besides it was your idea to bomb him Taylor," mister Stark added and I saw the man look at me with a raised eyebrow. Oh he is so going to get back me for this later. I feigned innocence and said: "I have no idea what you are talking about and you have no proof. Now give me the balloon."
The Captain was reluctant in handing me the water balloon, probably thinking this was very childish, but I ignored it. We all looked over the railing as Happy made his way up the steps, whistling. I eyed mister Stark: "He seems to be in a very good mood."
"Not for long," mister Stark grinned at me and I realized how much younger he looked like this. Must have been a while since he last relaxed and did something utterly stupid like this.
"Ultimate shame on you if you miss this Alex," Morgan told me and mister Stark agreed with her. I ssht them and held my breath as Happy made it to the door. As he pushed the buzzer I let go of the water balloon. For some reason he bent down and the balloon hit him right in his back. He started shouting immediately, knowing what had just happened. He lifted his fists up at the roof, shouting names and threats, but froze as he saw his boss and Morgan grinning down at him: "Hi Happy."
"Oh boss…what the hell?" Happy asked and looked utterly annoyed by our little stunt, but he didn't want to make too much of a fuss since it had made Morgan laugh very loudly.
"It wasn't me, Taylor got you," mister Stark said with a grin and I waved at the man, who felt very conflicted between yelling and cursing at us, but keeping it cool since Morgan could hear everything: "You…you…you… I can't curse with Morgan standing there! Get down her kid."
"That's our cue kid. See you Monday Taylor," mister Stark said his goodbye and he and his daughter walked to the door. Morgan slipped her hand into his and eyed the Captain with merriment. The man stopped Stark and laid his arm around his shoulders, while Morgan tried to keep him in place. The Captain pulled a water balloon from behind his back and smacked it against my boss his head. Morgan laughed in amusement as she saw her father's face: "He got you daddy!"
"Call it America's revenge," the Captain got back at my boss with a very confident smirk. He looked good when he felt confident and relaxed. He always looks so serious. He should also smile more.
"I would call if more the revenge of the grandpa but whatever," I called from my spot and my boss and Morgan laughed at my comment and took their leave. Mister Stark did send me one meaningful look over his daughter head, that I rolled my eyes at because I didn't know how else to respond to that.
"So what was that all about?" the Captain asked me and offered me his hands. I took them and he pulled me on my feet, allowing me to lean against him for support as he helped me to the old couch. I can't believe he is here and that my boss knows about it. What happened to not having anyone know about this just yet.
"Morgan found some old water balloons in my bathroom and it sounded like a funny thing to do. Turns out we were right," I explained with a smile and the Captain rolled his eyes at me. His arm was laying around my waist and he pushed his fingers in my side, what made me laugh and try to get away from him. He didn't let me go, but I could tell he was making sure I didn't hurt myself while he tickled my side. We bot sat down in the old couch and the Captain laid my injured foot on his knee, so it was positioned upwards: "Oh I bet it was funny."
"Admit it, you liked getting back at my boss," I told the man and he said he wasn't going to dignify that with an answer what made me smile. I was reluctant to let my foot rest on his knees, but it did feel good. I should be taking it easy and resting, but instead I have been hopping around and standing way to long on my feet: "So what brings you to these necks of the woods Captain?"
"I'll be gone for a couple of day's so I figured I'd come see how you are doing after last night," the Captain answered with such honesty that it made me uneasy. He came here to check up on me? Just check up on me? His answer made my heart beat faster and I felt all warm and tingle on the inside. But at the same time mister Starks words kept running threw my head. I shook my head to silence my boss: "How kind of you, but I'm alright. My friends are coming over this afternoon to keep me company."
"The once from the clubs?" the Captain asked and he rolled up the sleeves of his shirt. I was distracted by his movements and it took me a few seconds to let respond: "Two of them and two other friends from university. How long will you be gone this time?"
"Don't know yet," the Captain told me and leaned back in the couch, closing his eyes as the sun broke through and shined down on us. It was going to be a beautiful day. I let my eyes wonder of the man's face and thought to myself that us sitting here was so…strange. How am I sitting here with this man? Just talking and being relaxed. He is going out on a mission, probably heading in to some dangerous situation and yet he seems utterly calm.
"Does it have to do with last night?" I asked after a few seconds of shamefully staring at the man, what he didn't seem to mind though. I also leaned back and enjoyed the heath the sun was providing. I wonder what last night was about. Did it have to do with the Avengers or just one of them? Was it an old enemy they already knew or is it someone new? And what did they want? What were they after? Where they there to kill them? The realization that I had been in a situation where the intent could have been to kill the people I was surrounded by made me shiver. The Captain eyed me and told me he couldn't respond to my question, what I understood. It was probably classified, but he nodded his head as he spoke none the less and it made me chuckle: "Well be safe on your trip that has nothing to do with last night."
"Are you worried ma'am?" the man asked me playfully and I felt…giddy I guess is the best word to describe it, because I liked that he was turning on his playful flirtation. For a man who isn't all that good with women, according to everyone, he knew how to make me smile and feel weak in the knees. He flashed me his million dollar smile, but I wiped that quickly of his face: "Don't get your hopes up. I don't know you well enough to be worried Captain."
"Well you do owe me a new date so maybe I can change that," the Captain said casually and I looked surprised at him: "Excuse me? I don't owe you anything Captain."
"Yes you do, I barely spoke to you last night. I might not be the leading words expert on dating, but I know that doesn't count as a date," the Captain argued and his reasons were ridiculous, but I caught on that he was technically asking me out again. The realization made me smile and blush. I tried to hide it, but he noticed it none the less and he just smiled at me. I weighed my option of responding to his accusation. I could accept his proposition, it's not like I would mind. Getting to know the Sergeant last night had been great and I was annoyed that I didn't get to talk with the Captain much. It wasn't their fault I guess, but still. The Captain waited for me to respond and when he raised one eyebrow at me, what reminded me very much of the Sergeant, I decided to not let him win so easily: "Well maybe you shouldn't have sweet talked miss Pots hyena's all night and let the Sergeant steal the girl away."
"I tried but…" the Captain tried to defend himself and I smirked at him as he got a little bit flustered at me calling him out on wasting his time with Thalia and Camille. I interrupted him: "Try harder next time Captain. You screwed that one up yourself."
"You are one tough lady, aren't you?" the man laughed and let his head fall back on the couch. Yeah, I guess I am. I am the type of woman to let the guy work for it a little bit. I guess it's just a way to see if a guy is actually worth my time. When guys have to work too hard for it, they tend to move on, so you know they were only chatting you up for one reason: "So I have been told."
"I'm still saying you owe me another shot," the man said and sat up straight and turned to me. He laid his arm on the back of the couch and leaned a bit forward. As I had turned sideways and was leaning against the arm of the couch, him leaning in felt intimate. I bite my lip and pushed myself up slowly and asked him in a low voice: "And why's that?"
"Because I'm the Captain," he responded with also a lower voice and a twinkle in his eyes. I couldn't stop myself from blushing at his words but I also chuckled at his words. Only he can say something so… and get away with it. I hate men who use condescending language around women or who try to be the dominant man who tells the woman what's what. But shit it was hot when he said that. Maybe it didn't feel wrong when he spoke like that because he's Captain America, is there a more decent guy out there?
"That might be true Captain, but I'm not good with taking orders," I responded and looked up at him with a smile. He leaned closer and whispered that I needed to be taught a lesson follow orders. I chuckled at his choice of words that should not be turning be on. I should be above this. The man asked me what was so funny and I explained how he sounded like most assholes I met in bars, who everyone women tended to avoid.
"If I sound like that, then why are you blushing?" the Captain asked me and leaned his forehead against mine and I froze. Oh damn him for noticing. My eyes grew large and he noticed but he didn't point it out. One hand cupped my cheek gently and I wondered if this was it? He seemed to be leaning closer and I didn't stop him. My heart was beating faster and I felt like pudding as his other hand touched my face as well. Was he going to kiss me?
"ALEX OPEN YOUR GODDAMN DOOR!"
We were startled by Hillary's voice shouting at my front door. We both froze for a second and then both chuckled as we realized my friend just killed the moment. We didn't pull back though and the man kissed my forehead instead. He moved slowly and I leaned into his gently kiss. When he pulled back, I smiled at him and he hesitated for a second but he didn't lean back in and I didn't mind. Thank you Michael for ruining the moment. The Captain helped me make my way back to my apartment but he didn't come in since my friends were waiting downstairs.
"Do you have any plans next weekend?" he asked me as I opened my door. I felt his hands gently touch my sides and turn me back to face him. I didn't mind his touch and let him turn me. His arms slide around my waist and he pulled me against his body as his forehead leaned against mine again. I couldn't ignore how solid his body felt and it made me blush as I realized how close we were standing.
"I don't think I have anything planned," I said and he made me look in his eyes. He seemed conflicted about asking me something, so I asked him why he asked. He's asked me out before, so he can't be nervous about that.
"At the risk of sounding presumptuous, Sam has invited me and Bucky at his sister's state with some others. How much begging are you going to put me threw to get you to come with us? Wanda will be there as well and I'm getting the feeling she isn't looking forward to being the only female, along with Sarah," the Captain asked me and I looked surprise at him. Is he serious? Did he just ask me out for a whole weekend and to go away with his friends? I blinked a few times, needing time to process his question for I wasn't sure I was ready for something like that. I mean I like spending time with him and the Sergeant, but a whole weekend and surrounded by his friends? Mister Stark's voice went through my head again and this time I couldn't shake him out: "I'm going to have to think about that."
"I promise no attacks or annoying co-workers keeping me from talking to you," he tried to persuaded me but I stayed with my answer and he kissed my forehead again and took his leave. I went inside my apartment and waited with buzzing my friends in to collect myself. A whole weekend away? And with his friends joining us? Well I don't think that I would be in any danger and Wanda would be there. She seems to be cool, when she's not asking to many questions. Could this really be okay? Could I say yes to joining them? They would both be there so I could get to know them better, but mister Stark's words kept ringing in my ears like some kind of mantra. What am I doing flirting with a man like the Captain and the Sergeant? I'm not an idiot who's going to deny all the qualities the Captain has and I'm sure he is basically the greatest catch you could get, but come on Alex! He's Captain freaking America! He's a soldier who protects our country and planet. What business do I have associating with him? And then there's the Sergeant, who I just can't seem to understand. Is he just flirting with me to just flirt with someone or is there more to it? But he knows the Captain is doing the same thing and asking me out, so what is the endgame here? He was awfully curious about how a relationship between three people would work, but he can't be serious, can he?
Tessa and Hillary arrived and Hillary told me excitedly that Captain America had let them in. She kept going on and on about the man and Tessa just send me knowing looks, that I tried to ignore. I was grateful that she didn't ask any questions because Hillary was here and we would be joined by two other friends soon.
The more I thought about my boss his words, the more ridiculous this situation seemed to be. He was right! The man was probably just like mister Stark, just as paranoid and probably a bit of a control freak. I mean he even came to check up on me today. He didn't need to do that. He doesn't know me that well and I didn't get hurt because of him. It was an accident. Okay it happened at a party he invited me to, but still. I doubt he went to visit the other guests who got hurt and see if they were fine. It's not surprising giving his history, but would I really put up with that? Do I really want someone who asks me to text them when I get home from a night out with my friends or tell them where I'm going when Tess drags me of on some weekend trip on a very last minutes notice? No! I haven't had to answer to anyone in years and I'm not just going to give that independence up for a pair of pretty boy's. I don't care how handsome they are!
And they probably have to defend themselves from danger on a weekly basis. Can I really put up with that, knowing they head out to face danger and I have to sit at home like some damn housewife? I don't want to worry if my boyfriend comes home in one piece, in a body bag or with multiple gunshot wounds. Why can't I just find a normal boyfriend? Someone with a normal job and a normal family, that I can talk bad about behind their backs like a normal girlfriend would do? Hillary and Tessa are always complaining about the families of their boyfriends, or girlfriends in Tessa's case: they are too noisy, his mother is a control freak, she babies him, his sister is a nightmare, his brother is a dumbass, his father is a creep and on and on the list goes. What is there to complain about when dating someone like the Captain? He's to handsome? He doesn't have a family? He's to chivalrous? He's to considerate or nice?
It had crossed my mind that what if they were my soulmates, but I laughed that idea away quickly because there is just no way someone like me, a civilian with not the greatest background story is paired up with the likes of them. There's just no way. We aren't compatible with one and other and I'm not just saying that to sound modest or put myself down. The only thing I can come up with that we have in common is that we all have a shitty background story, but at least I didn't get frozen in ice for a couple of decades or got turned into some crazy weapon for an evil organization. I can just imagine us sitting around the dinner table and me asking if they killed anyone interesting lately. No, there is absolutely no way they are my soulmate, it's just a coincidence the Sergeant asked about my mark and that they both are flirting with me.
My weekend was rather depressing as my thoughts about the matter took over and I couldn't focus on much else. Tessa and Hillary came over on Saturday so we could binge watch a new series on Netflix about female wrestlers in the eighties. It was kind of brilliant and super weird and my friends ended up staying the night so we could finish the third seasons. Sunday morning Brooklyn visited us with breakfast and Michael later joined us to play games all day. They kept me occupied but my mind kept racing and it was so frustrating that I couldn't talk to them about it, because I don't want anyone to know about this just yet until I figured out how I felt about this whole situation.
