My Hero

Chapter 5

By That One Fuzzie Guy

It was late in the morning when All Might and Izuku arrived at U.A for his sparring with Mirio. While All Might was worried he'd create more bad blood between him and Night Eye, the same can't be said for Izuku, he was eager to test his limits against an opponent with higher experience than what he had to offer.

Essentially, when they arrived at U.A's training grounds Izuku was practically vibrating.

"I see someone is excited!" Izuku turns around looking to find who's voice belongs to only to find nothing.

"I'm over here." Izuku looks to his right and finds a face sticking out of the wall.

"Ahhh!" He screamed and Toshinori jumped. "Why are you like that, is it some kind of quirk?!"

"It is, you're Midoriya right?"

"Y-Yes, how do you know my name? Are you-" The figure phases out of the wall.

"Togata Mirio? Yeah, Sir said he wanted me to meet you. You don't look like much at first glance but I can tell you've got some muscle."

"U-Uhm, thank you. So, where is Night Eye?." He asked.

"Right behind you." A fourth voice appeared leaving Izuku confused until he turned in the opposite direction. He was startled, to say the least.

"Ahh!"

"You must be Midoriya Izuku, my former employer told me all about you."

"U-Uhm, right." Izuku sweatdropped. This guy seriously lacks a presence, where the hell did he even come from?

"Do you know why we're here?" Izuku nodded nervously. "Good, I informed the principal of our meeting so we can use U.A's grounds to the fullest of its capability. You can change into U.A's P.E uniform in those lockers over there."

Izuku nodded and went over to the lockers to exchange clothes. He had a lot of thoughts on his mind and was mainly excited to be facing U.A's best. To say he was hyped would be like saying the sun is hot.

"What type of strategies should I use? Should I actually use One For All at its maximum? What exactly is his quirk? I haven't done research on the Big Three so I'm going in blind. Will he even be able to withstand 15%-"

"Yo, Midoriya! You alright in there? We're supposed to be sparring soon so I suggest you get ready and stop doing teenage stuff." Mirio warned.

Izuku's face flushed a furious crimson as he looked down. "I-I'm not doing any of those things Togata-senpai! I-I'm just t-thinking."

"About what? Your will-"

"Togata Senpai!" Extraneous laughter is the only thing Izuku hears as his face twists into vermillion hue, he'd been played.

"Sorry about that, I just love joking with people like that, but seriously hurry up, Sir wouldn't really enjoy you being late and you wouldn't wanna see him when he's annoyed."

Mirio leaves Izuku and gives him time to put on his P.E Uniform.

All Might said Mirio doesn't know about One For All, I'm guessing it's just Night Eye. Before Mirio could urge him to come sooner he was already in his uniform.

Mirio was impressed that he had so much muscle. At first glance, he looked like your average Middle Schooler who was slightly taller than the average, but his training for One For All has paid off. He almost had just as much muscle as Mirio.

"You've got some muscle on you there Midoriya, I can see why Sir took an interest in you."

Izuku blushed, he still wasn't used to getting complimented for his muscular build, but he acknowledged it with a nod.

"I see both of you are prepared." They both turned around to see Toshinori with Night Eye.

"U-Uhm, yes Sir Night Eye, I just finished changing." Night Eye nodded and opened his mouth but Izuku cut him off.

"If I may ask, why did you invite me here? It must be something more important than sparring."

"Your perceptive ability does not leave me unimpressed, you're correct, asking you to come here just to spar would be redundant, I'll explain only if Mirio here would give us some privacy.

"Wouldn't mind it, sir." Mirio walked out of the room with a smile on his face.

"Is this about One For All?" Izuku asked.

"It is, I want to see if you're worthy of inheriting the power. I'm afraid your teacher didn't notify you of this but Mirio was originally going to inherit One For All." His voice was monotone but sharp.

Izuku's eyes went wide with surprise as the gears started ticking in his head. "Oh." His gaze tripped over to Toshinori to where he just shrugged.

"So I want to see if you deserve it more then him, if not then you'd be a disappointment."

Toshinori looked at him with a disproving gaze while Izuku averted his eyes from him.

"I see." Izuku paused, but soon after determination lit up in his eyes. "I won't fail to disappoint you, Sir! All Might choose me for a reason, I promise I'll even exceed your expectations.

Sir didn't show any emotion on his face, he only narrowed his gaze. "Very well, I'd also like you to use any percentage below 25%, I want this to be a challenge for you." Izuku flinched but nodded. "Mirio?!" Night Eye called.

"I'm back, so are we ready to do this Sir?"

"If you were to choose the respective places you shall begin." Mirio grins while Izuku straightens his mouth. They head to their placements and prepare.

I don't know his quirk or what he can do. I'm also limited to use anything below 25%, can I even win with that? It's best if I attack first to see what he can do. This is a good place to see where my limit is as well, let's do this! Izuku readied himself mentally.

"You may begin in 3," Izuku prepares One For All in his legs for a dash while Mirio stretches. "2," They get into their fighting stances and stare each other in the face. "1."

They both lunge at each other, Izuku starts out the match One For All rearing at 8% and directs an empowered kick into Mirio's direction. The kick phases right through him.

"What the-" Izuku is cut off when Mirio phases into the ground. Where did he go, is his quirk phasing or something?!

Izuku got his answer as he's hit with a punch to his solar plexus. All the wind is knocked out of him as he lands on the ground with a thud.

Izuku grunted as he forced himself back up. His analytical mindset kicked in. It must be phasing, that's his ability, he read me like a book so he could predict my movements, well two can play at that game!" Izuku gets up and regains his balance and lunges at Mirio again.

"Your power and speed are impressive, along with your durability, I'll give you that, but you're too predictable!" Mirio phases into the ground again and prepares to uppercut Izuku.

Wait for it, wait for it! Not yet! Mirio lunges out of the ground behind Izuku and prepares a kick to the ribs only to be met with a surprise.

Now! Izuku reacts before the kick can land and ups his percentage to 10%. "Predict this!" Mirio is fast and has incredible analysis, he'll give him that, he may even beat him when it comes to skill, but he doesn't outmatch him in terms of speed and power.

Shit, I can't phase through it in time! He's met with a One For All enhanced punch at 10%. The amount of wind pressure alone is enough to knock out the average man completely. It left Mirio winded and did some damage but he was still standing.

Meanwhile, with Toshinori, he was sitting with Night Eye watching the match, so far he was impressed, he didn't hide it like Night Eye and was visibly surprised.

If this kid were to inherit One For All right now he'd probably be able to use nearly 100% right off the bat, the physical ability he has is downright ridiculous.

He might've chosen him if he didn't meet Izuku, but fate didn't let that happen. He sighed and continued watching the match.

Izuku is busy gawking at how Mirio withstood his punch. His punch wasn't weak, it was a decent amount of his power, that might've been enough to seriously injure a regular man if not kill them if he didn't hold back. He was impressed but wary.

His analytical mindset kicked in and went into overdrive. Did he withstand that? No, he took damage, he's weakened but dangerous, I have to be careful, he's desperate and looking for an opening!

Mirio lunges at Izuku and once again phases into the ground but this time when he pops up from behind, he's prepared. When Izuku tried to deliver a kick to the ribs to immobilize him Mirio phased through it and prepared his ultimate move.

"Blinder Touch Eyeball Crush!" He shoved his finger into Izuku's direction and he instinctively shut his eyes giving Mirio the opportunity to catch him off guard, but Izuku quickly spotted the trap and his next move.

He's trying to catch me off guard, I won't let that happen! He upped his One For All percentage to 15% and let Mirio struck him.

The punch managed to knock him back, it didn't hurt much but still packed a lot of force.

Mirio, on the other hand only felt pain as he felt like he just punched a wall of bricks, he was taking his time to recover, this gave Izuku an opportunity to strike.

"Now here's my special move!" Izuku shouted and prepared a punch.

"20%, TEXAS SMASH!" He pulled back his first and like All Might punched the air generating a current of wind pressure which blew Mirio away. Fortunately, he didn't land out of the ring, but the wind pressure managed to catch him off guard, before any of them could retaliate Night Eye called the match.

"I think that's enough, both of you did a good job." Night Eye congratulated them both and pushed his glasses up. Izuku sat there in relief and smiled.

"But, I'm not done." Izuku, Toshinori, and Mirio all looked towards the middle age pro' direction. "Midoriya, I want you to fight me in a 1 on 1 match."

"Pardon?" Toshinori asked.

"I said, I want him to fight me 1 on 1, his skill isn't that great but his intelligence and physical prowess aren't to be taken lightly, I wanna see how he fairs against someone who can exploit his weaknesses."

Izuku wasn't excited, he was nervous as hell, but he couldn't back down, U.A's school motto is Plus Ultra, he'll go beyond what he's expected to do if it means impressing Night Eye.

"I agree, I'm curious to test my limits against you Sir, I'll keep my promise on not disappointing you!"

"Mirio, if you wouldn't mind." Mirio nodded and left out of the training grounds once again.

Night Eye enters the ring but he doesn't take a fighting stance, instead he activates his quirk and prepares for Izuku. "Very well, are you ready?" Izuku nodded. "I'll give you the first shot, this time, you're allowed to use anything below your limit."

Izuku adopted his fighting stance and began strategizing. He knows all the moves I used against Mirio, that means he knows part of my fighting style, I'll have to change it up a bit and become not-so predictable.

He darted towards Night Eye with unrelenting speed. He was fast but Night Eye's foresight makes him predictable.

"You're not that fast if I use my foresight, I know your every move, I suggest you use 20% if you even wanna surprise me." Night Eye's gaze narrowed into a cold stare.

"You asked for it! One For All: 20%!" Izuku moved so fast he might've been a blur to the regular human eye, but Night Eye's trained perception and foresight managed to counter him, albeit barely.

He's way faster than he looks, if he catches me off guard this might end very quickly, I'll have to take this seriously.

He adopts a fighting stance and lets Izuku retaliation take place. I'll end this quickly, he's already impressed me so there's no need for him to fight, he won't win anyways.

He was prepared for Izuku's counter, he was sure he'd win, but Izuku had one trump card he could use against Night Eye.

If he's fast enough to avoid 20% I'm curious about how he'll react to this. "One For All: 30%!" Night's Eyes go wide and Toshinori grinned.

He focused One For All into his legs and lunged at Night Eye surpassing the sound barrier and hit him with his ultimate move.

Hitting him at this speed would probably leave him injured, that's not needed, I only want to impress him. I need to lower the percentage.

"10% Detroit Smash!" He hit Night Eye straight in the gut. He wasn't winded like Mirio but it sure hurt like hell.

By the time Night Eye regained his footing he already made up his mind.

"You managed to stun me in a serious fight, you not only impressed me but surpassed my expectations. Mirio would've been able to handle One For All right off the bat but I would actually consider you a better candidate, technique-wise.

Izuku's face flushed pink, it was sort of proud blush.

"Young Midoriya, excellent job with Night Eye and Mirio, I'm proud of you!" Toshinori ruffled his hair while Izuku chuckled.

The doors open up revealing Mirio who walked in again. "Did I miss anything?" He raises his eyebrow.

"Yes, we reached a stalemate."

Mirio froze mid-step as he took several seconds to realize how big of meaning this was.

My Kohai is scary. He shuddered but went to congratulate him.

"I have to say, I'm surprised you managed to impress Sir of all people, it takes a hell of a lot to impress him, it took me three tries to even have him interested in me." Mirio mused.

"U-Uhm, thank you once again?" He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck.

Izuku and Mirio break out in laughter at the awkwardness of the situation while Night Eye and Toshinori eye each other.

"Mirio, I'd like some privacy for us and Mr. Yagi, take Midoriya with you as well."

Mirio lifts a brow but nodded. "Of course Sir, come on Mr. Overpowered, let's leave these two to their business." Mirio dragged Izuku out of the world and into U.A's halls.

They left Night Eye and Toshinori alone together.

"I think we should address the elephant in the room, Midoriya-"

"He's worthy of One For All, no, he's not just worthy, something about him just fits with the quirk, he stalemated me in a fight Toshinori, he impresses me."

Toshinori didn't immediately respond, nor did his jaw drop. The air between them was awkward and polluted for many years, with All Might's injury and Night Eye quitting his job as his sidekick, but now, they could at least respect each other once again.

For the first time in ages, Night Eye had a smile on his face. When Mirio and Izuku came back they saw their mentors chatting with smiles on their faces, if they had any questions they didn't think about them.

It's been several weeks since Izuku and Mirio's sparring. All Might gave Izuku the day off to focus on his training with Katsuki, of course, Katsuki wouldn't pass up the chance to surpass his best friend, he'd take any chance he'd get to get the edge in a fight against Izuku.

So when Izuku came back he was surprised to see a colossal explosion encompassing most of the ocean shore. He could only think of one person who was capable of this.

K-Kacchan?! He was shocked, it wasn't a small explosion at all, it was the size of multiple city blocks in diameter.

"What the hell?!" Izuku said aloud, this caught the attention of Katsuki and All Might.

"Young Midoriya! I see you've arrived, I and Katsuki were just practicing his new special move!" All Might explained.

"S-Special, move? W-What's it called?"

"Napalm Collision, I learned to rotate my explosions, it's the special move I've been practicing-" Katsuki was cut off by Izuku's muttering and his intense scribbling in his notebook.

"NapalmImpact?ThatsoundslikesomethingtodowithnapalmexplosionsorfireIwonderifithastheforceofanapalm?Ifthat'sthecasethe-"

"Young Midoriya, breathe!" All Might shouted causing Izuku to accidentally drop his notebook in the sand, he jumped in shock.

"Sorry about that Sensei, I'm just interested in his special move, it looks even stronger than his Howitzer!"

"I designed it to be able to contend with you, what do you say to a little spar?" Katsuki hummed in a malicious tone with explosions crackling off his palms.

"I-uhh, maybe later Kacchan, I just wanna get some training with Yagi Sensei." Katsuki was a little pissed he turned down his offer but nodded, albeit slowly.

"Alright then, Young Bakugou will practice his moves while you'll clean the beach, understood?"

"Yes, Sensei!" The boys yelled in unison.

"Good, Young Midoriya get to it!" Izuku nodded and went off to haul some scrap metal.

While hauling the piece of scrap metal he was thinking back to what All Might said about "imitating him" and how his imitations were shackles holding him back.

He was very much different from All Might, while All Might focused on getting up close and personal with his boxing technique, Izuku focused on more precise combat thanks to his analytical mindset. He didn't understand what his sensei meant.

Suddenly, a booming voice interrupted his thoughts as he accidentally dropped a piece of scrap metal on the sand, he cursed under his breath.

"How are you doing my boy?!" All Might asks.

"I'm doing fine Sensei." He thought back to his previous thoughts and asked him a question. "What did you mean when you said I imitated you? Our fighting styles are different."

All Might thought back to his talk with him a few months ago, actually, despite being the one recommending the advice he himself had no idea what he meant either, he just got it out of a teaching book for dummies, he was utterly clueless on how to explain this.

"I-uhm?! Maybe you should focus on that when you get into U.A, right now, you should focus on mastering One For All." He dodged a bullet there and mentally sighed.

"Oh, I get it, thanks Sensei." All Might flashed him a grin and went back to help Katsuki with his quirk training.

Izuku picked up the heavy pile of scrap metal he dropped and hauled it over the steps, he had five more months until U.A's entrance exam, that's five months to get into U.A, he had to make sure he would work his ass off, he had so many people he couldn't let down.

All Might is one of them, he'd master One For All and make him proud.

It's been three hours since Izuku finished hauling his portion of the beach, somehow Katsuki was still practicing his quirk, his stamina was crazy and seemed limitless, Izuku didn't seem to have his stamina though, he was sitting down panting after he just lodged a refrigerator.

He still had more work to do for the day, He internally groaned, being able to control a huge amount of One For All meant more work for him, it was getting harder to advance to further percentages. All Might assured him he'd be able to get to 100% right before U.A's entrance exams started, but the way he was progressing, he wasn't sure.

"Young Midoriya, how's your training going?" All Might appeared beside him.

"Did you finish training Kacchan already?" He glanced over at the veteran pro.

"Yes, he eventually got tired out, his stamina is remarkable, I have to admit."

"Figures, nobody has unlimited stamina." All Might nodded. "Back to your question, it's the same old hell as usual, now that my training is far more intensive than it used to be."

"Still having doubts with One For All's progress?"

"Maybe." Izuku looked down at the shoreline, the beach was halfway complete, yet he couldn't help but fear he wouldn't master One For All before U.A.

"Tell you what, Young Midoriya, let's stop training One For All then."

Izuku looked at the pro with a perplexed face. "I'm sorry, pardon?"

"Let's stop training it and do more bodybuilding." Izuku raised an eyebrow. "That way you're more likely to handle it better, we were only training One For All to get you better control over the power, but seeing you already know how to adjust the percentages, we can skip that."

Izuku scratched his head. For the first time, Izuku placed doubt on his teacher, the idea sounded ridiculous, but he nodded his head, All Might had no reason to lie to him, he trusted him enough to bury his doubts.

"Alright, Sensei."

"We'll have to rearrange our training plan, the training will be twice as hard, I hope you don't regret this Young Midoriya."

"Regret would be a strong word." Izuku chuckled. "Not in a million years, I'll go beyond this regimen if I have to."

All Might smiled with pride. "That's the spirit my boy. Go Beyond, PLUS-"

"ULTRA!" Izuku shouted with him in unison. If you were to hear them now they'd be chuckling excessively.

"Your new regimen starts tomorrow, You're free to head home my boy."

"Right, goodbye Yagi-Sensei!" He waved goodbye to his master. All Might reverted back to his true form, smiled, and stared into the sunset.

"Nana, you'd be proud of him, I'm sure of it."

It's been a solid four months since Izuku's hell training began, he has been pushing his body to the limit. If his old regimen was classified as punishing this would be classified as torture. He was told to lift things that were nearly twice his own weight with just his arms and legs as support.

This wasn't training, this was hell, but he didn't care, he ignored the pain and kept pushing his body further, breaking past his old limits.

He was improving physically wise but he wasn't sure he'd master One For All by the time the entrance exams came.

"Come on Young Midoriya, you can do better than that! I can run faster than that even without One For All!" Toshinori was sitting on a washer machine supervising Izuku's training while Izuku was running laps around the beach.

Izuku dared to pick up the pace and strain himself even more. For an average person and even some professional athletes this would be like torture, but for Izuku, this was normal, he did this almost every day and didn't regret a single bit of it.

He will not let the pain of his muscles stop him from impressing All Might, that would be the one thing he didn't want to happen.

Finally, he collapsed, Toshinori ran over him to give him some water.

"You're doing good so far Young Midoriya."

Izuku smiled sheepishly. "It's hell but, Plus Ultra am I right?" Toshinori held him a thumbs up.

"I'm confident that you can do this Young Midoriya, just to let you know even if you can't master One For All by the time of U.A, I'll still be proud of you." He reassured him.

Izuku sat there and the smile disappeared from his mouth, he attempted to open up his mouth to answer but Toshinori stopped him.

"I know what you're going to say." Izuku just stared at Toshinori with perplexed eyes. "It doesn't matter if you can control 100% or not, either way, you're improving, right? You're already making me proud by surpassing your limits."

Izuku's lips turned downwards. "But what if I'm not good enough?"

"Young Midoriya, why do you think I choose you as a successor for One For All?" Izuku didn't know the answer. "Because of your heart, I said it myself that you're a hero in your own right, you don't just need strength to become a hero, you need a heart as well."

Izuku's eyes widened with unshed tears.

"My boy, you have the best of both worlds, there's no need to worry yourself about not being good enough." Toshinori paused and flashed his smile. "Because you're already good enough!"

Izuku let a single tear shed down his face, soon another, and then several, he wiped his eyes with his sleeve. He whispered a "thank you" to him.

"Now we can't spend all of our time emptying out your tear ducts! Let's get back to training!"

"Yes, Sensei!" He got back up and began doing more of his routine, determined to meet the deadline.

While Izuku was busy with his training routine, Toshinori thought to himself.

This kid has no idea I have to keep adjusting the training regimen every week to suit his progress, don't worry Young Midoriya, you've already surpassed whatever expectations I had left.

Author's notes: And that concludes Chapter 5 of My Hero, sorry it took so long to get this out, I just had a lot of things I had to handle, kind of had to write another work on ao3.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter, I certainly had some fun writing it, but honestly, there was this massive writer's block that I couldn't get through, it took several days for me to come up with any decent ideas.

And don't worry, I'm not forgetting about Izuku and Melissa's relationship, I just think that can wait for when Izuku passes his entrance exam. There's also a canon explanation, it's just that Izuku has been too busy to see her consistently, they do text each other though.

Anyways, thank you for reading, if you're interested in the story so far make sure to hit follow, or if you liked the story hit favorite. Make sure to type your criticisms in the comments. Until the next chapter, later.
