Second Place
"I don't understand Sara, I thought that this was working. I thought that you and I had something special. I love you."
Sara wrestled with her next words, she hadn't wanted to hurt Grissom but in truth he had been hurting her for the passed three months since they began their relationship and if she was truly honest a lot longer than that.
"I'm sorry Gil, I do love you too but...but I can't come second place to the job anymore, in fact I won't. I know how much you love your job, because I love my job too but I need you to love me more than that." She tried to explain, knowing she was doing it badly.
Grissom nodded his head slowly.
"What you're saying is true Sara, and I'm sorry. Does this mean you've found someone else...?"
Sara nodded too.
"It's Greg, isn't it?" Grissom replied before Sara could say anything more.
"How did you know?" She asked, puzzled.
"You think I can't see it, that spark between you, the chemistry that died between us long ago?" Grissom looked at her sadly. "I know we only ever finally got together because of what had happened to Brass. We needed each other then but I suppose we don't anymore. I hope Greg can give you the happiness you deserve, the happiness I could never give you."
"Thank you." Sara smiled, leaning over to give him one last hug. "And I really am sorry."
"Don't be, I'm glad you told me now." Grissom said, giving her a reassuring smile. All he had ever wanted was for her to be happy and loved, if Greg could provide her with that then he was satisfied.
Sara left the room, feeling a little better than she had five minutes before. Greg was waiting for her outside, he squeezed her hand in his.
"How did it go?" He asked, his brown eyes showing his concern for Sara.
"It was okay." She said, returning the hand squeeze. "Thank you Greg."
"What for?" He asked.
"For putting me first, for knowing that some things are more important than this job."
"Things like what?"
She leant up to kiss him. "Like love."
