Wish Upon a Star

"I wish I you may, I wish you might grant the wish I make tonight," Kyo said, picking out the brightest star in the clear sky. The young man had retreated to his favorite spot that night, he couldn't help but make a wish as he lay on the roof of Shigure's house. It wasn't the least bit his, he didn't go as far as thinking of it as a home. He wouldn't be there much longer. Only a few more months until he was introduced to his perminent residence. A room secluded from the world. A room with bars, a cage for the Cat.

That was one of the reasons he could not confess his affection for the woman he loved so. There were others, like the guilt. But somehow, he knew in the back of his mind that she would forgive him even that. Tohru would tell him it was okay, that it wasn't his fault; or that she loved him anyway. And he knew he'd believe it. Bringing her along down his dark path was not acceptable. He wasn't so selfish as to take her love, knowing how he was going to end up.

"But I love you anyway," No one could take away the warnth he felt with her. No one could take away how when she smiled his heart felt full. How when she was excited, he was excited. Excited in ways he couldn't imagine Tohru being for him. If he confessed his love or not, he was sure he would cause her heart break. It was a feeling he was accepting himself.

"I don't want to hurt you, I promised to protect you," There would be hurt. They were both invested too deeply to break away from each other without pain.

He knew what he wanted to wish for. It was selfish, but it was only a wish. There were no limits to the wishes one could make. It didn't mean that any of them would come true, but there was no harm in wishing. "I wish . . ." the emotion behind the wish was so intense it welled up in his throat and prevented him from speaking for a moment. "I wish that for one night . . . That I could spend one night alone with her," he finally managed, his voice a raspy whisper upon the wind. "And it doesn't have to be like one of my fantasies, we could just talk."

Yes that was what he wanted, more then anything. He wanted one last perfect moment with Tohru. Something to think about while he was locked away from the world. So he could reflect on an emotion other then guilt or hatred. So he could remember what it was to love. The pure, warm love of a rice ball. He closed his eyes, to lose himself in one of his many fantasies. One of those forbidden scenes of love and passion he so often thought about on the rooftop.

"I thought you might like some company. If you don't . . . I'll just leave," came the same voice in reality that he had been imagining. Kyo opened his eyes, and received a vision he had not been prepared for. She really did have the best and the worst timing.

"Toh-ru?"

Every once in a while wishes do come true.

"No you can stay." He said, trying to mask what his voice could betray. "I would like that."

Even for the Cat.
