Chapter 98: Fire and Desire

Lusamine stepped out of the hospital room, her heels loudly clopping on the white floors of the Heahea City Hospital. She ran a hand down her face as she struggled to regain her composure. Wicke placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, squeezing it slightly.

"He'll be okay, ma'am. If he's as strong as you say he is." Wicke said softly, smiling at the older woman. "Besides, he has a Kahuna watching out for him. I think we should simply wait for him to wake up."

Lusamine exhaled deeply, brushing a few tears out of her eyes taking a fortifying breath of air. "Right. Of course...Thank you, again. You didn't have to come with me to see my friend."

"No one should have to visit people like this alone." Wicke said quietly, offering Lusamine a sad smile before bowing slightly. "It's my honor to be that person for you, ma'am."

Lusamine smiled at Wicke, a genuine smile, before she nodded. "I see. Well again, I thank you. Shall we return to our car and head back to the Paradise? I believe Faba was going to be running some experiments that I should be present for."

"You also need to check on the Pokémon in the Observation Deck. They've been missing you, ma'am." Wicke reminded Lusamine, who smiled softly at that.

"Sweet darlings. Yes, you're right. Faba's competent enough to manage on his own and he'll inform me if there's any trouble."

Wicke raised an eyebrow at that.

"...Or so I hope." Lusamine finished, looking up at the ceiling. Wicke giggled at that, with the two women turning the corner.

"Have we had any major breakthroughs lately, ma'am? I'll admit it's hard to keep up on the Ultra Space research we perform while I'm juggling my other duties." Wicke asked Lusamine, with the older woman regarding her with a calculating look before shrugging.

"Sadly not. Faba has been careful not to waste the energy Cosmog left behind at the Battle Royal Dome. After how he wasted it at Ten Carat Hill, I've ordered him to exercise much more caution. That said I'm hoping for another breakthrough soon." Lusamine responded, deciding to give Wicke a little bit of information but not so much as to make her more suspicious. The woman was involved with their research, but some disagreement occurred between Lusamine and Wicke. While Wicke was a good friend, she couldn't quite be trusted with information she didn't absolutely need to know.

"Well, I'm sure we'll find a way to sort things out. And...oh? That person looks familiar." Wicke said as she spotted a familiar duo approaching them. One of them was a blonde-haired woman pushing a rather handsome man with black hair around in a wheelchair. Lusamine recognized them as Adrian Battlestorm and his secretary/camerawoman/assistant, Kelly Sontagio.

The two women were quickly noticed by the other duo as they made their way down the hallway. Lusamine spoke first, placing a hand on her hip with a pleasant smile on her face. She had met Adrian and Kelly several times, when doing interviews regarding the work the Aether Paradise did. And to stave off probing questions about the...special research that went on in their labs.

"Adrian Battlestorm. I had forgotten you were still hospitalized. How are you?" Lusamine asked politely, with the media mogul grinning back at her in response.

"Doing better every day, Miss Lusamine. They've got me cleared to go home tomorrow. I'll be taking it easy for a little while before I end up back in front of the cameras." Adrian said with a shrug, earning a nod from Miss Wicke.

"That's good. Miss Sontagio covers for you quite well, but I do miss your enthusiasm. It's a bit like the two of you balance each other out." Wicke noted, with Kelly laughing at that.

"I get that a lot. I'm one of the few people who can keep up with this psychopath." Kelly said as she patted Adrian's head like a small child. Adrian shot the ladies a charming smile, making Miss Wicke blush slightly.

"She's joking. Not like I'm winning any marathons anytime soon. That said, Kelly's proving why I was right to trust her with things while I've been out of commission." Adrian said brightly as he looked up at Kelly. "While I'm definitely one of a kind, Kelly's got things well under control. It's nice not worrying about the company and the network and taking some time to heal."

"I would imagine so. You were hurt quite badly in your battle against that Dawson man. You were pretty reckless charging in there alone like that." Lusamine noted, crossing her arms with a smirk as Kelly placed a hand on Adrian's shoulder. The wheelchair-bound man flinched at her touch.

"Oh, he's been made very much aware of how stupid he was being. I've reminded him daily. Haven't I?" Kelly said to Adrian sweetly, increasing the pressure on his shoulder. Adrian looked like he was about to start sprinting down the hall if he was able to run at the moment.

"Y-y-yeah, of course. No more Z-Moves for me...well, double Z-Moves." Kelly increased the pressure on his shoulder again. "Okay, no more Z-Moves at all! I'll be good!"

"So what exactly happened to you? I wasn't aware Z-Moves had that kind of effect on the user." Wicke asked curiously, with Adrian chuckling after a moment,

"Truth be told, I don't understand the specifics either. Doctor Colress and Professor Kukui want to run some tests on me though. Apparently the strain of using two Z-Moves in quick succession like that almost put me into cardiac arrest and nearly killed both me and my Dragonite. If it wasn't for our little hero taking care of that guy, I wouldn't have made it out of that stadium alive." Adrian said as his smile faded a little. "I don't regret what I did though. I'll die before I let a bunch of terrorists wreck my home and get away with it."

Wicke and Lusamine grinned at that, with Kelly shooting the two women a wink. "I've got my hands full dealing with my bone-headed boss, but he's recovering well. He'll probably be back on TV in a few weeks time looking better than ever."

"I heard from a little birdie that the two of you started dating." Wicke said with a teasing note to her voice. Kelly flushed a little at the accusation while Adrian leaned back in his wheelchair with another one of his trademark grins.

"Oh, you betcha. She's been my doubling as my oh-so-lovely nurse in my time here. The ass-wiping sessions we've had were incredibly romantic." Adrian said with a salacious wink of his own, making Lusamine's mouth drop. Miss Wicke's eyes were as wide as dinner plates, her cheeks bright pink. "The best part is when she bends me over and slaps my-"

"I don't need to hear this!" Wicke proclaimed, clamping her hands over her ears. Adrian's grin was massive now, his eyes gleaming with his trademark enthusiasm. Lusamine wanted to punch the man in the face and send him to the ER. Especially since he took that as permission to keep going.

"I assure you, it was erotic as hell. Especially when-" Adrian yelped when Kelly suddenly smacked him on the back of the head, cutting him off. "This is abuse!"

"I've had it, you horny idiot! I was going to take you to a nice cafe I've been coming to for lunch to celebrate you getting released. But nope! It's hospital food for you again, Mister Battlestorm." Kelly said as she began to wheel Adrian past the Aether Foundation women, who both stared at the duo with perplexed expressions.

"No! I'm...You know what? I'm not sorry! You can't quell my creative freedoooooom..."

Lusamine and Wicke watched, nonplussed as Kelly wheeled Adrian away, leaving them alone in the hallway once again. Lusamine raised a hand, as if to ask something, but thought better of it and simply continued walking down the hall. Wicke recovered a few seconds later and shrugged, moving quickly to catch up with Lusamine.

Neither of them noticed the man lurking in the shadows, a gleam in his red eyes as he peered out at them. Nanu sighed, rubbing his nose, before sinking back down into his own shadow.

"Aside from Adrian proving that his IQ is on par with a coconut, that was some interesting info. I should probably inform Looker. Tch...Anything to ruin my goddamn Sunday."

Paniola Town

"You sure you don't want to head back to the lab?" Mallow asked Lillie as the two of them hopped off of the Ride Charizard they had arrived to the town on. Lillie brushed off her dress, adjusting it after a moment before smiling at her friend.

"No, I'm fine. Besides, the Professors and Doctor Colress are doing some important work regarding Z-Power and I'm not very helpful with that stuff. So I might as well spend time with a friend." Lillie said with a smile, making Mallow grin at her.

"Well, first things first! We need to check in on Kiawe. He's usually busy today, but I think he managed to get the day off work so he could focus on his training. He is a Captain, after all." Mallow said as the two of them made their way through the rustic little town. Lillie's nose wrinkled slightly at the smell of Miltank and Mudbray dung in the distance that wafted over the town thanks to the wind, but managed not to let her distaste show. Mallow seemed used to it, since she had been to the town many times before thanks to both her job and her friendship with Kiawe.

"Speaking of Captains, whatever happened between Acerola and Ilima? He was really mad at her." Lillie asked the older girl, who grinned.

"Acerola got away scot-free and Ilima found himself with a cute black-haired girl as his date this Friday night."

"Wait, what?"

Mallow chuckled, crossing her arms. "Acerola might seem like a little brat with the maturity that comes with it, but she's incredibly perceptive. A handsome guy like Ilima strutting his stuff at a public event like that, full of people who respect and admire the Captains...well, as I said. Ilima has a date this Friday and it's all because Acerola made him run around that Festival half-naked."

"It was really silly."

"Oh yeah, no doubt about it. It's something I would do."

"You did try to strip me during Truth or Dare. On my birthday. Twice."

"Because I wanted Sun to see what he was missing out on!" Mallow protested, making Lillie frown in response.

"And I would have done that in front of everyone if I hadn't outsmarted you and if Sun hadn't been looking out for me." Lillie responded as Mallow let out a sigh.

"Yeah...sorry Lils. I did go a bit overboard. But it is really nice to see you two finally getting close." Mallow said with a small smile. "How was your date? Did you have fun?"

Lillie blushed lightly, though her smile widened a little as she remembered the events of the Festival. Sun and her holding hands, eating treats, buying each other a pendant and simply enjoying each other's company. She had felt completely safe in her costume, or rather disguise, and with her closest friend by her side. She had even been bold enough to kiss him in front of the others.

Lillie then realized she had been daydreaming, and that a smirking Mallow was still waiting on her answer. Lillie's blush deepened, but she nodded.

"It was wonderful. We had a lot of fun and Sun was a gentleman the entire time. And seeing his Grand Trial and watching him overcome Olivia, even when she was going all-out, was so amazing." Lillie said fondly, her smile bright as Mallow giggled.

"He's a sweet boy. I hope you two sort out your feelings. I mean, I totally get it now." Mallow said as they continued to walk through the town, with a few of the locals waving to Mallow as she led the way.

"Do you?" Lillie asked, somewhat skeptical.

"Oh yeah. Took me a little bit, but I do understand now. You're both just now starting to grow up and deal with puberty-related crap. Plus you're both sorta socially awkward due to a sheltered childhood. But on top of that some really bad stuff happening to you? God...if you started dating now, it'd end up becoming a nightmare." Mallow said as she threw her arms up into the air. Lillie was surprised the Captain could be so insightful, despite her tendency to embarrass her friends and push them out of their comfort zones.

"Anyway, I really think you and Sun should go at your own pace. You two have a great friendship and getting into the thick of it too soon because you're still growing up and learning isn't all that smart. Take it from the chick who's had six boyfriends in the past year." Mallow joked as Lillie chuckled softly. The two of them were now approaching a large house, which Mallow simply waltzed straight into without any fanfare.

Lillie wondered why people in Alola didn't care about this sort of thing more. Didn't Mallow technically just break into someone's home? She also decided right then and there to ensure the front door to the Pokémon Lab was locked every night before she went to bed, because she wasn't sure if she could count on Kukui to do it himself.

The white-wearing princess made her way into the very warm home, where a dark-skinned woman was cooking something with a Magmar nearby, which explained the heat. Mallow simply walked right on past, waving to the woman and receiving a wave back. Lillie stood in the doorway, confused by this, before Mallow called out to her.

"Hey, you coming? Kiawe isn't going to wait around for me to harass him forever." Mallow said as she tapped her foot impatiently. Lillie hurried forward and the two girls made their way up the stairs and began walking down a hallway. Mallow stopped at a room and tapped her knuckles twice on the door frame.

"Kiawe, I'm respecting your privacy by knocking but asserting my authority as your best friend by coming in anyway!" Mallow called before throwing the door open with a dramatic gesture. Lillie rolled her eyes as she followed the Captain into the room, where Kiawe was masterfully spinning a wooden staff around the room. Lillie and Mallow simply watched the Fire-type specialist twirl the staff around for about a minute in awe, the sheer amount of grace and skill on display genuinely astounding the two young women. Even if Mallow was used to it by now, she couldn't help but smile at Kiawe doing what he did best.

"Yah! Hoo! Hee! Hyah!" Kiawe barked, taking a step forward as he spun the staff over his head with a skill that was born from countless hours of practice. The Fire-type Captain was incredibly impressive in his dedication, and only snapped out of his trace when Mallow stepped forward and the floor creaked slightly. Why this alerted him and not Mallow doing everything else she did, Lillie would never know.

"Huhn?" Kiawe glanced behind himself and saw the two girls now in his room. Lillie gave Kiawe a small wave, making the young man smile after a moment. "Oh. It's you, Mallow. And hello, Lillie."

"What are you doing?" Lillie asked, with Kiawe stopping his practice and tapping the floor with his staff after a moment before setting it to the side.

"This is my fire dance training. Whenever I have free time, I practice my dance as much as I can. It takes a lot of repetition to get good at it...just like Pokémon battles." Kiawe said with a grin as Mallow giggled.

"And Kiawe is one of the best fire dancers in Alola. He puts the pros to shame sometimes." Mallow said proudly, with Kiawe actually blushing a little at that.

"I work hard for my skills, and there's always room for me to grow and learn from the experts." Kiawe protested modestly, though Lillie saw it another way.

"I think it's good that despite your talent, you want to continue to grow stronger. I wonder if that has to do with you being a Pokémon Trainer or being a Trial Captain. Or perhaps, it's just a part of your personality." Lillie wondered aloud, with Kiawe shrugging in response. After a moment of thought, he walked over to where his cell phone was charging on the floor and picked it up, unplugging it. As he did so, his eyes widened in surprise.

"Oh, look at the time!" Kiawe yelped, stuffing his phone away and looking at Mallow and Lillie with a sheepish expression. "Sorry, I know you just got here, but I have to go to the Thrifty Megamart. If you need to talk to me, come meet me there." Kiawe said apologetically, stepping past the two teens as he hurried down the hallway. Lillie watched him vanish from sight as Mallow sighed angrily, stomping her foot down.

"Just when I think I can finally have a day to hang out with him. Jerk." Mallow pouted, huffing slightly. Lillie smiled at her friend's childish behavior, though when Mallow suddenly grinned Lillie had to fight back a shiver.

"Um...everything okay, Mallow?" Lillie asked timidly.

"Oh yes...Because now that Kiawe is gone, I can snoop through his things! Muahahaha!" Mallow cackled as Lillie fought back a sigh of disappointment.

As Zinnia, Hau, and Sun soared across the sea atop the backs of the Draconid's powerful dragons, the Lorekeeper decided to indulge their curiosity and explained some of her history. The tale of the Draconids. Sun and Hau were astounded to learn about the clan of Dragon-type users that worshiped Rayquaza, the Lord of the Skies.

Zinnia explained how she had taken the role of Lorekeeper from Aster, the previous Lorekeeper. While Zinnia didn't elaborate on who Aster was, due to the painful memories, it was obvious the woman was very precious to her. The red-eyed Trainer explained the history of Rayquaza, Kyogre and Groudon and the role she played in the events in Hoenn about ten years ago. After that day, she became a wanderer. Always looking for a place to belong in this world that no longer needed someone who was never needed in the first place. Sun and Hau both felt sorry for the woman. To spend your entire life working towards a goal, only to have it thrown in your face, must have been a terrible experience.

"I walk this world alone. Without a true purpose, I feel. Sometimes I wondered if I would die alone in the streets, and fade away from the annals of time. But a few years after my pilgrimage started, I discovered the Anomaly and learned about what this monster could do. And I've made its destruction my purpose." Zinnia said with gleaming eyes, making Sun frown. Before he could say anything, Zinnia spoke again as they circled what Sun realized was Royal Avenue.

"There we go. Land at last." Zinnia said as she hopped off her Salamence, with the Draconid stroking the dragon's head for a moment before returning him.

"You mentioned you were going to the Hano Grand Resort, right? That's maybe a day's walk from here. Though I suppose you could use a Ride Pokémon." Zinnia mused, returning her three dragons.

"So...what are you going to do now, Zinnia?" Sun asked the Lorekeeper. To her credit Zinnia considered the answer she would give the boy, and eventually smirked.

"I'll talk with Tapu Lele. Devise a new battle strategy. And try again." Zinnia said with a nod, looking to the two boys. "You both work on getting stronger. I sense talent in you. Foster it. Use that strength to protect that which is dear to you."

Both children nodded and Zinnia added, "And be wary. The Anomaly might visit you again. I'll try to take care if it before that happens, but...Just in case be careful. Alright?"

"Will we see you again?" Hau asked the Draconid, making her smile at him.

"Maaaaybe." Zinnia said before turning around and heading down the street. In a few moments she was gone, leaving Sun and Hau on the street.

"So now what?" Sun asked Hau, who shrugged.

"I'm getting something to eat." Hau said casually, putting his hands behind his head. Sun rolled his eyes, not expecting anything less.

"I guess I'll head to the Thrifty Megamart. Might as well restock on some supplies and make sure we can hit the ground running on Ula'ula Island." Sun said to Hau, with the other boy nodding. At that, the two boys went their separate ways through the recovering city.

It was definitely a sight to see. Reconstruction efforts were still well underway, with buildings still being rebuilt or demolished to make way for new ones. Rubble was mostly cleared away from the streets as both people and Pokémon helped with making the city what is once was. Sun caught a few waves from the locals who actually recognized him, and soon had a faint smile on his face. Even though he didn't think he was worthy of the praise, it was still nice to get.

As soon neared the Thrifty Megamart, he caught sight of a familiar face. However, as Sun approached he decided to duck behind a car, not wanting to intrude on Kiawe's conversation with someone wearing a "Manager" pin on his chest.

"I see…" Kiawe said as he looked down, a resigned expression on his face. The man opposite him sighed, rubbing his face for a moment.

"Kiawe, I'm really terribly sorry about this, but I've thought long and hard about this decision. If it comes down to people who are counting on this job to make a living, and you…" the Manager trailed off, a guilty expression on his face.

"It's all right. I know how hard you've worked to open this location after the Guardian Deity destroyed the previous one in anger. I understand, boss." Kiawe said, trying to smile at the man. He wasn't very successful. The Manager pulled out a slip of paper from his pocket and handed it to Kiawe. The Captain accepted it, though he seemed a bit surprised by what was on it.

"Kiawe...I've given as much as I can afford. Spend your final paycheck wisely." the Manager said to Kiawe, who looked back at the man for a moment before bowing to him out of respect.

"Thank you very much." Kiawe said quietly, straightening back up.

"I hope your dream of studying dance abroad comes true someday. I have to keep working hard here to make my dreams for the Thrifty Megamart come true." the Manager said to Kiawe with a sad smile, making Kiawe grin at the man.

"It's OK, boss. You can head back in now." Kiawe said to his former employer said, sounding normal for a moment. Sun could see how hard it was for the Captain to keep the facade up though.

"Thank you. I'll be seeing you." the Manager said quietly, walking back towards the store. Sun saw Kiawe's expression fall as he looked down at his final paycheck.

"How could this happen…?" Kiawe muttered, rubbing his face as an angry sigh escaped him. Sun took that moment to approach his friend, concerned about him.

"Kiawe? You alright?" Sun asked worriedly, with Kiawe looking at Sun in slight surprise.

"Oh, it's you, Sun." Kiawe said quietly, putting the check away in his pocket. "If you don't mind, I'd like to battle with you, Sun."

"Huh? But...Are you really in any condition to battle? You look really...distressed." Sun said out of concern, with Kiawe's expression lightening a little.

"I appreciate the concern, but I'll be fine. I just...I don't feel like dancing by myself right now…" Kiawe said quietly, drawing an Ultra Ball from his belt. "Besides, I have a few Pokémon I've been training up. They should be roughly around the same strength as your own, so this will be a fair fight. Does three-on-three work for you?"

Sun nodded in response, kicking himself for agreeing to a battle with the Captain mere moments after he got fired from his job. The two Trainers separated, using the parking lot as a battlefield. Sun would later find out this was a fairly normal occurrence, and that so long as none of the attacks were aimed at the store and that Trainers battled far enough away from the building it was not only allowed, but encouraged. It all made sense to Sun. Battles were incredibly easy to turn into a sort of profit, as his father had taught him so long ago.

"Growlithe, lets go!" Kiawe called out, sending out a familiar orange and black canine. Sun smiled at the dog, remembering Brago's former form, before falling out Finn. The Poliwhirl struck a pose, sticking out an arm while curling the other one in as he let out a laugh. That laugh was quickly silenced by the Growlithe's Intimidate hitting him.

"Bzzzt! That'll weaken all of Finn's physical moves." Rotom Dex reminded Sun as the device settled on the boy's shoulder, with the Kanto-native nodding in response.

"Finn, Rain Dance!" Sun called out, with Finn holding out both arms as a misty ball of energy formed within his palms before firing outward. Soon the parking lot was drenched in the downpour of rain and Rotom was hiding in Sun's backpack once again. Kiawe and Sun ignored the rain, focusing on the battle ahead. Especially when Growlithe hit Finn with a Bite attack and threw him into a nearby wall.

"Scald!"

"Bite!"

Finn fired off a burning hot stream of water that struck the Growlithe in the face, sending it reeling backwards with a pained howl. To Sun's surprise, the canine let out a loud snarl before darting to the side and sinking his teeth into Finn's right arm and then throwing him into a nearby lightpost. Sun winced as the Poliwhirl hit the metal with a harsh thud, falling to the ground and leaving a sizable dent in the object he had just impacted.

"Ow! Why did you have to do that?" Finn complained as he rubbed his head.

"Follow up with Take Down!" Kiawe barked, stepping forward as his Growlithe launched at Finn with a faint white aura of energy surrounding the Puppy Pokémon and smashing into the stunned Poliwhirl and sending him back into the light-post again.

"Finn, use Body Slam!" Sun shouted as the Poliwhirl stumbled to its feet.

"I'll do whatever it takes not to hit that stupid thing again!" Finn yelled out, pointing at the very dented lamppost. The Poliwhirl then ran forward, leaping into the air and smashing into Growlithe belly-first while the dog was struggling with the recoil damage it had taken with its last move. As Growlithe hit the concrete with a pained growl, a faint buzz of electricity surged around it.

"Tch. Paralyzed. Looks like I'll have to...Hmm. Flamethrower!" Kiawe shouted as his Growlithe struggled to its feet. The Puppy Pokémon nodded before releasing a large jet of flames from its mouth, which struck Finn and sent him tumbling backwards.

"Finn! Water Gun to get skyward, then use Bubblebeam!" Sun called to the Poliwhirl as he leapt to the side to escape the flames. Finn charged forward, leaping into the air and using Water Gun to propel himself into the air, doing a graceful flip and avoiding another Flamethrower from the immobile Growlithe.

"Flame Charge to dodge!" Kiawe shouted, though he was dismayed to see that his Growlithe was unable to move at all, completely frozen by its paralysis and unable to dodge the bombardment of bubbles that exploded all around it from the sky. Finn landed on the ground, striking a pose that was becoming increasingly familiar to Sun. And as the mist surrounding the Growlithe cleared, it revealed a knocked out dog.

"Looks like starting that training a bit early was a good call. You still up for more, Finn?" Sun asked the Poliwhirl, who replied with a series of punches to the open air.

"I was born ready! I won't let you down, buddy!" Finn boomed as he punched his fists together.

"Such enthusiasm is good to see in a Pokémon. I also wasn't aware that your Poliwhirl had evolved." Kiawe noted as he returned his Growlithe, clipping the Ultra Ball back to his belt and calling out his Alolan Marowak.

"He evolved after a...side trip me and Hau made on our way here." Sun explained, with Kiawe frowning.

"Odd. I was under the impression you two were heading straight to the Hano Grand Resort after helping Lana entertain the twins. Why would you get sidetracked to Royal Avenue?" Kiawe asked, sounding confused. Sun sighed, trying to figure out a way not to give away Wes' location. It wasn't that he didn't trust Kiawe. It's just he absolutely didn't want Wes and Mohn to have any attention drawn to them if they didn't want it.

"It wasn't anything planned. We ended up running into some trouble and had to make a trip here." Sun explained, with Kiawe simply shrugging after a few moments.

"I guess it's not my business anyway. I've got my own problems to deal with." Kiawe said the last part under his breath, though Sun seemed to catch the rather upset tone the Captain had in his voice. Sun felt bad for battling the Captain as stressed out as he was. This wasn't a fair fight.

"Kiawe...Do you want to keep going?" Sun asked the young man. Kiawe nodded sharply before pointing forward.

"Shadow Ball!" Kiawe barked, with the Alolan Marowak holding out his bone like a staff and firing a sphere of darkness towards Finn. The Poliwhirl was surprised by the sudden attack and was blasted backwards into…

A wall.

"Well...at least it wasn't another lightpost." Sun said dryly as the Poliwhirl stumbled to his feet, wincing in pain.

"Shadow Bone!" Kiawe shouted as Alolan Marowak darted forward, spinning its flaming bone above its head as it charged at Finn. The Poliwhirl readied himself for Sun's command.

"Scald!" Finn shot a jet of water at the Alolan Marowak, who leapt to the side to dodge it and hurled the bone at Finn. Finn, to Kiawe's surprise, blasted the glowing bone with another Scald and sent the bone flying away.

"Hit it with Bubblebeam!" Sun called out to Finn, with the Poliwhirl quickly firing off a series of powerful bubbles that exploded against the Alolan Marowak and sent him flying backwards. The Bone Keeper Pokémon slammed onto the ground, but rolled into a crouch and held out its hand. To Sun's surprise the bone that had been knocked away suddenly flew into Marowak's outstretched hand.

"Let's get serious. Shadow Ball, rapid fire!" Kiawe shouted as the Alolan Marowak began to swing his bone with a series of yells. A sphere of darkness erupted from the bone with each swing, and soon the air was filled with Shadow Balls.

"Finn, do whatever you have to do to dodge them!" Sun shouted to Finn as the Poliwhirl stared down the incoming wave of attacks with a glint in his eyes. Finn, to everyone's surprise, charged forward. Sun figured the Poliwhirl would try to vault over the onslaught of attacks using his water. Sun then thought of a more interesting idea.

"Finn, hit the ground ahead of you with Water Gun and then slide under the attacks. Then hit him with Scald!" Sun ordered the sprinting Poliwhirl, who obeyed and sprayed a jet of water forward before leaping ahead. The Polwhirl, to Kiawe's amazement, slid across the drenched ground on his belly with alarming speed, easily avoiding the wave of attacks that had been unleashed. Finn slammed his hands into the ground and propelled himself into the air, releasing a Scald that blasted the Alolan Marowak into a nearby metal trash can.

"That's how you do it, Finn!" Sun cheered as his Poliwhirl punched its fists together, chuckling at the praise.

"We're not done yet! Let's keep up the pressure!" Finn yelled as he glanced back at Sun, who nodded at his Pokémon with a wide smile.

"Tch. Not bad. It's definitely an unpredictable one." Kiawe growled as his Alolan Marowak struggled to its feet. Sun wondered about this for a few moments before looking at Kiawe.

"Is this your personal Marowak, Kiawe?" Sun asked the fire-dancer. Kiawe shook his head once, and then explained.

"Not quite. Or rather, not the Marowak I normally use in battle. This is the child of my first Alolan Marowak, who has been with me as my Partner since I started my Island Challenge. I've been raising a few of them over the years, all sired from my first Alolan Marowak." Kiawe said to Sun, who nodded after a moment.

"Wow. No wonder he was able to use Shadow Ball like that. It's definitely tough." Sun admitted, with Kiawe smiling a little at that. He prided himself on the care he took in training his Alolan Marowak's.

"In fact, this particular Alolan Marowak is a Totem Pokémon in waiting, should something ever happen to my Totem Salazzle. He has a little ways to go, but he's quite skilled for his young age" Kiawe explained as the Bone Keeper Pokémon twirled his bone, glaring at Finn as the Poliwhirl prepared itself for another round.

"Flamethrower!" Kiawe shouted as his Marowak aimed the staff at Finn, releasing a massive blast of flames that smashed into the Poliwhirl and sent him flying backwards. "Follow up with Shadow Bone!"

"Bubblebeam, Finn!" Sun countered as the Bone Keeper Pokémon drew closer, with the Tadpole Pokémon released a stream of bubbles that were rapidly popped by Marowak quickly spinning his glowing bone. The Alolan Marowak struck Finn repeatedly, nimbly dodging the wild blasts of water the Poliwhirl was sending out to try and fend off the fierce attacker. It was made even worse when Rain Dance faded away.

"Finn, use Hypnosis!" Sun shouted out desperately, with Finn's eyes and stomach glowing as the Alolan Marowak averted its eyes and leapt back. Kiawe considered his options, seeing the both his Marowak and Sun's Poliwhirl were both showing signs of exhaustion. As he thought, the Captain happened to glance over at the Thrifty Megamart, his eyes lingering on the building.

Several fond memories of him working there, bonding with his coworkers and even having fun on the job flashed through his mind. As tedious as the job was at times, he would miss it dearly. And it was yet another setback on the road to achieve his dream.

Kiawe's lapse in concentration meant that his Alolan Marowak was completely caught off guard by the sudden Scald that struck it directly in the chest and finally knocked out the Bone Keeper Pokémon. Kiawe snapped back to reality as recalled his Alolan Marowak, scowling as he mentally berated himself for losing focus.

"I'm sorry, my friend. That one was on me. I'll do better next time." Kiawe muttered, putting away the Ultra Ball and calling out his final Pokémon. Sun recognized the bird that Kiawe sent out as a Fletchinder. "Stay alert. This one is wily. Use Peck!"

"Body Slam!" Sun shouted, with Finn running forward to meet Fletchinder with a belly-flop like slam. Both Pokémon collided with each other, though as they did Finn let out a shout of pain and was battered away by the bird. However, to Kiawe's annoyance, the bird suddenly let out a pained cry as a flicker of static electricity surged across the bird's wings.

"Paralyzed again? I'm having some terrible luck." Kiawe muttered darkly, eyeing the Poliwhirl that had been proving quite tough to put down.

It was then Sun spotted several burns on Finn's stomach, with a small flames bursting from the Poliwhirl's midsection.

"With all those burns, I don't think this will end well. At least his Fletchinder is a lot slower now." Sun muttered as the Fletchinder let out a light chirp. Kiawe nodded in satisfaction, but he wasn't done just yet.

"Quick Attack!" Kiawe ordered the Ember Pokémon, who promptly shot forward like a dart and slammed into Finn hard enough to send him flying into a light-post not unlike the one that he had been repeatedly been knocked into. It still hurt just as bad, though, and finally knocked out the Poliwhirl.

"Good job, Finn. You really did a number on his team." Sun said as he returned the Poliwhirl and sent out Penny.

"Use Flamethrower!" Kiawe shouted as the Toucannon took flight, launching herself into the air to dodge the attack. Sun saw right away what Kiawe was trying to do.

"He's making her attack with as little movement as possible so she doesn't get immobilized by paralysis...That won't work on me though. Penny, use Pluck!" Sun shouted as Penny swooped lower to avoid a second Flamethrower from the paralyzed bird on the ground.

Penny shot downwards before soaring towards Fletchinder, slamming hard enough into him to send him tumbling across the concrete. When he stopped rolling, the poor bird was revealed to have been completely knocked out.

"...I can't beat you if I keep my troubles to myself." Kiawe said as he returned his fallen bird, looking down at his Ultra Ball for a few moments.

Sun walked forward as Kiawe rubbed his face with his hands, letting out a groan of frustration. By all rights, Sun should have lost to him. While the boy was talented, he had far more experience.

"I shouldn't have battled after that...But I needed something to distract myself." Kiawe thought with an internal sigh before looking at Sun.

"So strong...I should've known. You did clear my Trial, after all." Kiawe said with a rueful smile, clipping the Ultra Ball to his belt. The young man crossed his arms, a frown now crossing his features. "By the way, did you hear what we were just talking about?"

"Yeah, kind of…" Sun said guiltily, making the Captain sigh externally in response.

"Yes, of course you did…" Kiawe muttered before looking down at the check in his hands. After a few moments he held out the check to Sun. His final paycheck from his time working at the Thrifty Megamart.

"What?" Sun asked, bewildered.

"You beat me. Here's your money." Kiawe said as he placed the slip of paper into Sun's hand. "You earned that money fair and square."

"Kiawe...I can't take your money. Not like this!" Sun protested, with Kiawe scowling at the boy angrily.

"Just take it, Sun." Kiawe said somewhat forcefully, though he was surprised by Sun's next words.

"Absolutely not. In fact, not only am I giving you the prize money back...I'm treating you to lunch!" Sun yelled out with a wide grin. Kiawe jerked back in surprise at this, so Sun was easily able to stuff the paper back into Kiawe's pocket. To say the Captain was stunned was an understatement.

"Now come on. Let's find Hau, since he probably knows a good place to eat that wasn't leveled in the attack." Sun said as he walked ahead down the sidewalk. Kiawe stood there in dumbfounded amazement before he quickly caught up to his friend, smiling slightly.

The two Trainers healed their respective teams at the Pokémon Center, and it was a short time later where they encountered their query. They found Hau standing in the park, stuffing his face with malasadas while his Pokémon played in the flowers.

Sun facepalmed, knowing that he should have realized this would happen, but decided to just move on and walk off in another direction. Sun and Kiawe managed to find a small bistro that hadn't been damaged in the attack and ate a simple but tasty lunch of sandwiches and iced coffee. While the two Trainers ate, Kiawe talked a bit about what would come next for him after Sun asked him about his future.

"My dream is to become a professional fire dancer. I've been saving up forever to go study dance abroad. But I was just laid off from my part-time job. It seems like nothing ever goes right…" Kiawe muttered, sighing deeply.

"Yeah, it definitely seems like that. Though it's not all bad." Sun remarked, with Kiawe looking at him in confusion.

"How so?" Kiawe asked, curious as to where the boy was going with this.

"I mean, you're a Trial Captain. You're pretty strong physically and and you've got a lot of respect on this island. You shouldn't have much trouble finding another job. Maybe you'll find a better one." Sun said to the Captain, who thought about it.

"Perhaps. It'd definitely be nice to have a job closer to home or one that paid more. Customer service is pretty terrible, all things considered." Kiawe replied, with Sun grinning a bit.

"Remind me to never get a real job."

Kiawe grinned at that. "It's a shame it's not socially acceptable, with me as a Captain, to prowl through the wilds and battle every hapless Trainer in sight. It's not remotely fair and I'd develop a bad reputation in Alola. Though if I could do that, l I could afford to live abroad with ease with all the money I'd rake in...oh well."

"You could always just fly overseas and battle clueless Trainers. They wouldn't know any better." Sun pointed out, with Kiawe's eyes going wide.

"That...I never considered that!" Kiawe exclaimed, grinning widely.

"Where would you go if you could choose a region?" Sun asked Kiawe. The Captain crossed his arms and looked up at the ceiling.

"Johto. The Kimono Girls are there and I could learn so much from them. Though I'm not opposed to traveling the world and simply studying the history of smaller dancing cultures. While other regions may not promote ancient styles of dance like Johto, there's still a rich past to explore." Kiawe explained to an interested Sun.

"Maybe you could make a friend from another region and go there as a foreign exchange student or something?" Sun suggested, with Kiawe shaking his head in response.

"I think I'm too old for that. And it'd be simply to study dance." Kiawe said before he took a drink from his cup.

Sun frowned, looking down at the table in thought. "Maybe. Though getting a free place to stay while you study abroad, maybe even making new friends, doesn't sound too bad either."

Kiawe nodded, smiling again. "It's a nice thought. We'll see what fate brings my way. Either way, I'll probably take a few weeks to consider options and get caught up with my Trial appointments. Without a job, I can focus solely on my duties as a Captain."

"That's the spirit." Sun said with a wide smile before calling for the check. The two Trainers exited the bistro and walked down the sidewalk back to the park, where they could see Hau playing tag with his team. As they neared the benches, Kiawe took Sun aside with a serious look on his face.

"What's up?" Sun asked the Captain, confused.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to trouble you with my problems, Sun. You're so easy to talk to, though. I feel much better after talking with you. Thank you for being there." Kiawe said to the boy, smiling at him. Sun grinned back at the Fire-Type specialist.

"What else are friends for?" Sun said in reply, making Kiawe chuckle.

"Either way, I'll be going then. Until we meet again, Sun!" Kiawe said as he pulled out a Poké Ball and called out his Charizard. The Captain was soon soaring through the skies, away from the city that was still rebuilding itself. Sun watched the departing speck in the sky for a few moments before turning around to meet up with Hau.

Kiawe landed in Paniola Town an hour later, planning on collapsing onto his bed and having a brief cry before taking a good nap. However, none of these things happened because he was suddenly tackled to the ground by Mallow and Lana. Lillie watched on in amusement as she took a picture.

"If you think you're going to stay home and sulk, you've got another thing coming!" Lana said happily as she sat on top of Kiawe, who was only slightly annoyed.

"We heard what happened from Sun. I figured there was a reason why you'd totally ditch me and Lillie like that. I can't believe those jerks fired you!" Mallow growled, fully prepared to go the Thrifty Megamart and cause a scene.

"We've already planned out the rest of your day. First up, we're going to help you look for some places nearby that might be hiring. After that, we're going shopping. Our treat!" Lillie said brightly, with Nebby peeking out of his bag and letting out a small coo.

"And if I refuse?" Kiawe asked dryly, earning a glare from all three teens. The Fire-type Captain shuddered at that, and was soon carried off into the Pokémon Center. All the while Kiawe was pestered by the girls, though it was mostly Mallow. Kiawe wondered why they had ambushed him like this.

And then he realized that they were worried about him.

After hearing what had happened from Sun, they put their heads together and realized Kiawe would understandably be upset about his firing and go home and sulk. In their own way, they were trying to cheer up Kiawe and keep him from getting more depressed than he was already about today. And that made the aspiring fire-dancer smile, despite the pain he felt.

At the end of the day, he had a bunch of wonderful friends looking out for him. And he wouldn't have it any other way. So he let Lana and Mallow shepard him into the Pokémon Center with an amused Lillie leading the way. And he thanked the Tapu for blessing him with the life he had, and for whatever adventures come next for him.

"Oh my god, it's Chuuster!"

"Hau, no."

"Oh come on, Sun. I just want to hug him!"

"Hau, he's on vacation. Let him relax."

"Come ooooonnnn!"

"Don't make me call out Oliver."

"...I'll be good."

Sun was grateful that Hau decided to behave, because it allowed the boy to take in the sights of the luxurious hotel that they had been asked to meet out. Massive pools of water stretched out in front of the beautifully designed building, with clean white bridges extending out over them. The flower beds and bushes were masterfully tended to, showing off the local beauty of flowers found only in the Alola region. A regal black iron fence walled off most of the area, which included the absolutely massive golf course that stretched beyond the property for what seemed like forever. Sun could have sworn he spotted a Toucannon circling around one of the tees, but it was too far away for him to make out.

The two boys went into the hotel lobby, and were surprised to not find the Aether Foundation Branch Chief waiting for them.

"So...now what?" Sun asked Hau, frowning upon not seeing Faba around.

"What now? We're at the biggest and most expensive resort in Alola! I'm gonna catch some waves!" Hau laughed as he ran out of the lobby, attracting glares from just about everyone present. Sun followed his friend just in time to see Hau dash down the steps leading to the beach, letting out a whoop of joy before promptly face-planting in the sand. Sun made Rotom take a picture of that and sent it to Lillie before joining his friend.

The duo spent the next few hours on the beach, with Hau taking a part time job as a Pyukumuku Chucker and Sun exploring the waters nearby. He battled with some Trainers out in the water and found a variety of items hidden on both the beach, on the small islands nearby, and even in the water. Finn was more than happy to retrieve those for Sun, with the Poliwhirl enjoying his time out on the water training and getting more practice using his new arms.

Penny, Sun, and Oliver chatted all the while as they simply enjoyed the beautiful weather.

After a few hours, Sun was several thousand Poké Dollars richer and was now the proud owner of all sorts of interesting new items. This included several Pearls, two Heart Scales, a pair of Black Glasses, one Pearl String and a floating Antidote. Sun had even found a Zygarde Cell underneath the lifeguard's tower on the beach.

All too soon, Sun was entering the Hano Grand Resort where he found a familiar face awaiting him, looking aloof as always with her golf club in hand. Behind her a short distance away was Faba, but Sun was more focused on the woman ahead of him.

"Miss Kahili!" Sun said excitedly as he walked up to the woman. The Flying-type specialist offered Sun a small smile as the boy approached.

"That's me alright. I'm surprised to find you here, Sun. I didn't think a place like my father's hotel was your style." Kahili remarked, with Sun's eyes going wide in surprise.

"This...your dad owns this place?" Sun said in an awed voice, looking around the incredibly lavish hotel lobby. Kahili scratched her cheek, smirking a little at the boy's surprise.

"I could have sworn I mentioned it before. But I digress. It's good to see you spreading your wings. You definitely look a lot stronger than you did when we battled against that monster from the Ultra Space." Kahili said with an approving nod.

"Thanks! Wait, did you happen to be at the Festival of Celestial Lights?" Sun asked the golfer after a moment. Kahili's smile widened a little and she nodded.

"I watched your battle. Olivia definitely fought with a lot more intensity than she normally would in a Grand Trial. And you still came out on top. You baiting her Lycanroc with your Toucannon was a fantastic move. I might have to borrow that one sometime." Kahili said as she tapped her club on the ground, with Sun actually blushing at the praise.

"So you were there...I'm surprised I didn't see you." Sun said in confusion, with Kahili actually smirking at that.

"I was wearing a costume. With my fame as it is, I would have been mobbed without a good one." Kahili explained with a small shrug, which Sun accepted as an answer. Lillie had been wearing a costume that basically doubled as a disguise as well, so that made sense. At that moment, Faba noticed Sun and walked over to the boy and the golfer.

"So you've come at last." The man remarked, his eyes narrow slightly. "Ah. But forgive me. I have yet to introduce myself. You may call me Faba."

"Nice to meet you again, sir." Sun said politely, making Faba smirk slightly.

"I told you before that I would show you someplace astounding, right? Well that wondrous place is…" Faba trailed off dramatically with a grin on his face.

"Is it your windowless van with 'Free Candy' scribbled on the side?" Kahili asked dryly, making Faba give the woman a glare while several people listening in the lobby snickered.

Sun took a subtle step back from Faba.

"No. That place is...Aether Paradise!" Faba said, stroking his goatee. Kahili rolled her eyes and walked away, leaving Faba and Sun alone. But not before giving Sun one last word of advice.

"Keep honing your skills. Maybe next time we can have a battle. Until then, take care." Kahili said before walking out of the hotel lobby and leaving Sun to talk with Faba alone.

"Let me tell you about Aether Paradise." Faba said to Sun, who nodded. "Just as the name suggests, Aether Paradise is a veritable paradise for Pokémon that floats far out in the sea surrounding Alola. It is an artificial island, made entirely by human technology, for the protecting of Pokémon!"

"That sounds amazing...I've heard a little bit about the place, but nothing like that." Sun remarked, slightly awed.

"Of course I'm an adult who keeps his promises. So I will prove to you that all I've told you is the absolute truth with a tour of the Aether Paradise." Faba grinned then, a laugh escaping the man. "You will come, won't you!?"

"Yes. I mean...isn't that what this all was about?" Sun asked Faba, who ignored the last bit and simply laughed again.

"Good, good. Then you'll come with me. Aether Paradise will amaze you." Faba said with a dramatic sweep of the arms. Sun was about to comment on that, but suddenly Hau!

"Wait! Take me, too!" Hau shouted as he barreled into the lobby, panting slightly. To Sun's surprise, Professor Kukui and Olivia were calmly walking behind the excitable boy.

"Oh? Even Kahuna Olivia has come to see you off?" Faba said, sounding slightly surprised.

"As a Kahuna, I look after all the trial-goers who come to my island. They're like my own children." Olivia said with a fond smile, though she added. "Not that I've got any - I've never even gotten married." She then turned to Sun and Hau, addressing them. "Listen up, you two. Your greatest opponent is always yourself. Your greatest allies, the Pokémon beside you."

"Thanks!" Hau said brightly, grinning at the Kahuna. Hau turned to Kukui and asked, "Are you coming too, Professor?"

Kukui shook his head. "I've got my own business to attend to. You go see all the amazing tech that Aether's developing and tell me about it later, yeah? I'll see you on the next island…Ula'ula Island. Let's meet up in Malie Garden!" Kukui said with a wide smile, with both boys grinning back at him.

"Yup! It's good-bye, Akala Island!" Hau proclaimed, though he thought about it after a moment. "Though I guess we can come back anytime we want to, huh?"

"Nope."

"Sun, stop being snarky."

"Stop eating malasadas."

"...Never."

"Alright then."

Faba cleared his throat loudly, drawing attention back to him where it apparently belonged."Then let us enjoy an adventure upon that grand vessel that will take us across the high seas!...By which I mean to say, the ferry."

Sun and Hau bid farewell to the Kahuna and the Professor, making their way out to the small docks nearby. A small white boat with a strange emblem emblazoned on the top of the vessel was waiting for them. Faba entered the ferry, leaving Sun and Hau alone on the docks for a moment.

"Can you believe a big hunk of iron like Aether Paradise can float in the sea!?" Hau yelled out, almost overcome with excitement. Sun had to admit, he was definitely excited as well, though unlike Hau he had some restraint.

"And it's all cuz of the Pokémon holding it up. Did you know that, Sun?"

"I knew that." Sun said dully, earning a look from Hau. "Totally knew it. Absolutely."

"Aww...thought I finally had one up on you."

"Not a chance. Now let's get going." Sun said to Hau, earning a wide grin from his friend as he hopped up and down on his feet with a giddy little laugh.

"Ho, I can't wait to actually see inside Aether Paradise for myself!" Hau said excitedly as he hopped onto the boat as Faba sat down on the plush seats inside, with a uniformed woman in white sitting at the wheel of the ferry. Sun shook his head with a rueful smile and hopped aboard. Soon enough, the boat began to move and the two boys bid farewell to Akala Island. And they would move onto the next step of their adventure...But only after a quick stop by the Aether Paradise.

Where they would encounter something truly out of this world.

Alrighty, that's another one in the books.

Q & A

From: Guest 853435

First off, come on, FlygonNick... It's like 11:30 pm at night and I have school tomorrow. Why did you upload so late at night this time? ...Also, what do you estimate to be your regular upload hours wherever you live, by the way? Just curious, you don't have to answer if you don't want to.

So Nihilego is the reason why the Jardin Family is separated. I can't WAIT for the family to somehow figure this out. As if they needed even more reason to have a hate boner against the damned jellyfish in SM continuity. But that's enough talk about that... for now. I have a whole essay about that stuff when Sun inevitably meets the thing himself.

And now...

1.) Why go with more human-like names for Sun's Pokemon?

2.) Is Oliver's nickname Ollie a reference or a callout to the Ranger series? Because, there is a character who gets called Ollie for pretty much the entire time he's onscreen.

3.) Also, Geoff appears for the SECOND time abusing Pokemon! But I have to wonder: why didn't he notice the Snag Machine? Wes used it for Pyrhha, so unless Geoff got knocked out by Wes (REALLY want to at least hear that, if that's the case), I see no reason why he wouldn't have realized that he got his Pokemon snagged twice, by two different people. Not even an offhand remark? Or are we dealing with a Jr. here...?

Finally, Bonus:) So when is Sun getting the Flynium Z? Is he going to backtrack (again) to Ten Carat Hill for it with Machamp Shove, or is he going to... what is OBVIOUSLY Kahili's practicing spot for a make-up trial?

Bonus 2: The Electric Butterfree) By the way, if you could design a Flying-type Trial to spice up USUM, what would it be, the Totem and Kahili as the captain in all?

1. Yeah, I was determined to put out my last update on a Monday. I really don't have a dedicated time slot or really even day for updates. I used to, but not anymore. I ended up writing over 9K words in a single day, so...No regrets.

2. My naming scheme is all over the place and has to do with characters being named after other characters. That's really what it comes down to, not just giving them normal names. Brago isn't a normal name, nor is the names of #5 and #6.

3. I see you too are a reader of fine taste. Shadows of Almia is an excellent game. I actually never thought of that reference, though. I just happen to like the name Oliver/Ollie and it worked for what I wanted.

4. I was going to answer this, but it's more fun to see what'll happen.

5. Sun will be backtracking to get the Skyinium Z, like in the games. I really liked what US/UM did with it, and while I wish I could so something similar, that can't happen. This is a Pokemon Sun story.

6. Oh god...Um, probably something to do with golfing and attracting Oricorio to different flowers in the hill that allow them to change into the four different forms. Once they're defeated, a Totem Pokemon would appear. Maybe a Totem Skarmory or something, I dunno.

I'll be heading out to home to the states in just a few hours. Hopefully this chapter will tide you all over until I return. I'd give you all a precise day to update, but I'm notoriously crap at that so...I'll refrain from doing so this time.

As always, please review if you feel like letting me know your thoughts. Your feedback is really helpful and it's really motivating at the same time. Even just a short blurb or a guest review is more than enough. If you haven't favorited and/or followed the story already, then please do so you can stay updated with the fic. I also answer questions left in the review section, and if you want to join the conversation on RS then feel free to PM me for a link to the story's Discord channel.

Take care and stay awesome.

Until next time, FlygonNick out!
