Silvarion POV

"So how was the meeting with Mother?"

I turned sideways to find Sylphariel propped against one of the great pillars that supported the Seventh Hall. His casual demeanor belied the worry hidden within him.

In truth my meeting with the Queen had been unbearably uncomfortable. Dealings with the above have become ever scarcer since our retreat from the world and Voldemort's recent intrusion had only served to worsen the enmity that already existed between our races. The war had caused old suspicions to fester and new threats to multiply. For me to give away Caledfwlch to human intruders… was the height of folly.

"As well as could be expected, she was more than displeased by my decision to treat the strangers as my royal guests."

"That does not surprise me in the least."

I poured myself another glass of nightwine and walked out onto the lunar balcony; its edge a glorious knotted cord of branches and leaves. There was such magnificent detail in every inch that it scarcely seemed real. The balcony's edge, much like the entirety of the grand palace and all of its halls, had been sung into place over a period of centuries by the royal spellweavers. A testament to the ability of our great people. When once Agniel stood towering above the forests of the world and we lived freely among her upper branches to dance beneath the light of the moon, now only her roots remain as we are left to cower amongst them. Stories of our life before the fall were legend. Every child knew of the passing of the Ljosalfar… and the wizard who had paid his respect for our loss and sacrifice.

As I stared out onto the enormous trunk and sea of roots that was my home and kingdom, I could not help but feel a pang of sadness for what I'd done. Our realm was lesser for the absence of Merlin's great gift and my people would forever remember the Prince who's decision it had been to give it back.

"Mother trained me in the ways of magic, she is our most powerful spellweaver. I learned from her much and more about the arts of the Fae. Those boys… I know enough to know they have the essence of the goddess in them. For that alone I do not regret my actions this night. There is no doubt that the blond has blood of the Ljosalfar and his counterpart—"

"—Oh yes. I've been waiting to hear what silly excuse you'd come up with for giving away Excalibur to that green eyed whelp."

"And his counterpart" I continued, ignoring his interruption. "Has the blood of my forbearers in his veins." His surprise at my words was almost palpable.

"What? But how can that be? He has not the appearance of any of our kind." Sylph was looking at me searchingly, his eyes attempting to peer through my skull to determine what more I knew.

"That isn't the most shocking information, but it will have to wait for now. Mother and the council has ordered you on a mission." I couldn't hold back my sadness. Speaking the words was like pulling at a thousand tethers hooked into my heart. "You are to cloak yourself in human form and follow the Green Eyed one. Give him counsel and share your secrets with him. In return you will spy on him for me and the realm."

Slyph looked beyond shocked by the command. The urgency of his will to protest must have been outweighed by his shock because his first instinct was to blink and sputter. "I'm to be his friend? Does mother realize what she's asking of me? Why this of all things? What possible strategic use could we gain from having me follow him?"

"Because, that child is the offspring of Harry Potter and so a descendent of the lords of the seven."

"So then… what we suspected about the Potters—"

"Correct. Our histories are accurate. I felt it tonight and the elders have confirmed it." He paused, letting the full length of his sigh slow his breathing as the truth set in. Prophecies made at the very founding of the world were coming to pass. The next few years would shape the fate of every living creature on the earth.

"If that is true, then last night was no coincidence. It was providence. You must realize this means a third great war. A war to rival that of any before it." I managed to pull my gaze from the sight of the kingdom I knew and loved, shifting to face my only brother. We would both be leaving. He would become a child again… a permanent alteration to his mind and body. He would have to wait to gain back the years of wisdom and skill he had acquired.

"You must realize that that is exactly why you are to spy on them. I will contact our allies in the above world. We must be ready for this war, and the only way it seems to ready ourselves is to be informed of the political maneuverings of the humans. I would not let mother send you away unless I understood how important this was."

"You intend to participate in this war? We should do as our ancestors have done and stay out of the affairs of man. We should stay hidden."

"You know why that is no longer possible. If those two have discovered us then it is only a matter of time until the humans uncover our hidden cities. If a war is coming to engulf the world then there will be no place for us to hide. By not participating we may very well be ensuring our own destruction. The only thing that remains to be seen is whose side we will fight for."

"What of Vivian? Can she be trusted to work for the alfakin?"

"No, she can not. For now Vivian le Fae will do us no harm, of that I am certain. She will not however ally herself with our cause unless our interests happen to coincide with that of those two boys. And should our cause shift against the tide of their interests… then she will turn on us without hesitation or mercy."

"Can I trust her enough to seek shelter if I'm discovered by anyone? She is still Fae is she not? However tainted her blood."

"We won't be able to conceal you entirely. The best ploy will be to tell half the truth. If you are to attend Hogwarts alongside the boys then you will not be able to hide yourself for long. You will be presented to the ministry of magic as a half elf. As for the details… Vivian will brief you on your background and the history of your false identity. She has informed us of a terrible murder that has occurred in the above. If we act shortly the ministry will be too busy to notice or object to your presence."

There was a long pause as the pregnant silence hung between us. He knew this was goodbye. When we saw each other again… he would be forever changed. If it came to it I could regress as well… but none of my family wished a child for a king… especially with my Father in his current condition. All this assuming we ever did see each other again.

"However I can be of service. My purpose is as your shadow, your shield, your sword. I am yours my prince. Use me as you will."

"Try not to be so gloomy. I remember how fun you were as a child. Even more reckless than me. Those were the days father was still well enough to favor you. You were the most adorable child anyone had ever seen. Even if nobody but the three of us ever admitted it."

"Juts you don't get yourself into any unnecessary trouble. I won't be there to get you out of it this time."

I grabbed him then, putting my forehead to his. The he spoke the words i knew were coming.

"The Goddess's song will be sung in our lifetime. At least we have that to look forward to. That and our reunion."

"If any of us survive to hear it. Goodbye… brother."
