Thank you for all the support! I was nervous about doing the last chapter justice but so glad to know so many of you enjoyed it! ;)

We are going to veer off the beaten path for this chapter. All Chloe's POV and she really just can't leave a good mystery alone.

Amenadiel had told her to just come in so that was what Chloe did. She softly shut the door behind her when he motioned for her to be quiet.

"I just got him to sleep. You have good timing." Amenadiel motioned for her sit in their sitting area. "Want anything?"

Chloe chuckled softly moving into the house. "Water, if you don't mind."

Amenadiel smiled at her turning to gather drinks as Chloe made herself comfortable in one of the chairs.

"How is Charlie today?" Chloe asked when Amenadiel handed her a glass before sitting with his own.

"Better." He sounded relieved. "So much better than the past couple days. Honestly, I'm half tempted to go nap with him."

Chloe could have slapped herself. "We can always do this another time. I understand…"

Amenadiel waved her off. "Nah, you have questions and I'd like to answer them if I can, though, you most likely only have an hour…maybe…hopefully."

Chloe smiled in understanding. She remembered those days with Trixie. Trixie had been a relatively easy baby but even she had gotten colicky on occasion. Chloe was willing to admit there were days she wanted to run away but she wouldn't give up Trixie for anything.

"If you are sure."

"Yeah, ask away."

Chloe fidgeted a moment. "It is kind of a sensitive subject, or would be for Lucifer anyway. I'm kind of unsure about you so let me know." She paused to which Amenadiel just looked at her expectantly. Right. "It's about Lucifer and Michael."

Amenadiel released a breath. "Okay." He looked at her oddly. "What do you want to know?"

Chloe took a breath. "What were they like before? I mean, did they ever get along?"

"Get along?" Amenadiel chuckled in a disbelieving way. He shook his head before looking at her again. "Get along?"

Chloe felt like she shouldn't have even asked. "I'll take that as a no."

Amenadiel laughed. "Oh, they got along alright. There was a time it was like they were attached at the hip."

Chloe stared at him shocked. "What? Really?"

"Yeah. They are twins, Chloe. They were made within seconds of the other, close enough you could call it the same time. Course Michael was second." The dark celestial shrugged.

"So, Michael is the younger?" That made sense given how they react to each other.

"Basically." Amenadiel sighed. "We hardly ever saw them apart. When Father started handing out jobs, he typically gave us jobs that we were meant to do on our own, but those two generally snuck the other to help. Granted, Lucifer got a lot of the jobs himself, but if Michael had nothing to do, then Lucifer would take him along."

Chloe wasn't sure what to think. She had not expected what she was hearing.

Amenadiel continued. He was smiling softly clearly lost in fond memories. "Course they weren't perfect angels. More like demons with wings in my opinion."

"Amenadiel!" Chloe gasped out with a laugh.

He laughed with her. "I call them that out of love, Chloe, the love only an elder brother could have for his two annoying little brothers. There were times I swore they followed me around just to annoy me. If one was causing mischief, the other one wasn't that far away." Amenadiel snorted fondly. "They had the twin thing going for them too."

"Twin thing?"

"To us it seemed like they had their own language. I truly believe to this day that they could understand each other without saying a word. At one point they started disappearing for hours at a time. It became a normal occurrence for one of us to be looking for them, not be able to find them, and then just put out a message to let us know if anyone saw them. They were honestly quite the pair. Annoyed all of us to the point of exasperation but they were the twins. We loved them."

"What happened?"

Amenadiel sighed. "No idea."

"Wait. How can you not know?" Something had to have happened.

"It happened overnight, Chloe. One day they were fine. Happy. In fact, I had fussed at them just hours before it seemed like everything fell apart. They started ignoring each other. If they had to speak, they used harsh words with the intent to hurt the other. They started fighting, physically, pulling feathers and the such. We had no idea what had happened. Of course, we tried to figure it out, tried to talk to them, but if we so much as mentioned the other we got our heads bit off. Eventually, we stopped, it just wasn't worth our own feathers. They would figure it out and fix themselves, or so we thought. It wasn't long after that that Lucifer rebelled and the war happened with each twin on opposing sides."

Chloe felt dread filling her and her chest felt heavy. "They fought each other."

Amenadiel nodded. He looked pained, like the memories still hurt. "It was Michael that was tasked with banishing Lucifer."

"Michael threw him out."

Amenadiel did not respond.

Chloe sat silent as she processed. "But it doesn't make sense, Amenadiel. The change was a complete one eighty. If they really were as close as you say they were, what could have possibly happened to make them turn on each other so quickly?"

"Your guess is as good as mine. There are only three people that know. Two of them won't speak about it and the third obviously has no intent on helping." Amenadiel looked up as he said the last part. "They were just so angry with each other. It made no sense to us either."

That didn't sound right to Chloe. Yes, Michael still acted angry but she had seen the hurt too. "What if it wasn't anger?"

Amenadiel gave a confused look. "They sure fought with anger."

Chloe nodded. "Okay, sure, but anger can be used in place of other feelings. Most commonly anger is used to hide or mask hurt. What if what ever happened hurt them and they used anger to cover it up?"

"Possible." Amenadiel looked thoughtful. "Whatever the case, Michael was the most affected."

"What makes you say that?"

"Lucifer reacts to Michael with anger considering Michael knows exactly which buttons to push. With Michael, there was always this element of underlying hate to his words and actions." The angel looked at her. "Michael changed, Chloe. It wasn't real noticeable before the Fall, but afterwards, he was completely different. He was cold, harsh, he could always mess with our fears but he started doing it maliciously. It was almost like he wanted us to hate him. Many of us did. Do." Another sad sigh. "Even his relationship with Father changed. He still did as instructed, but it was with the air of having no other choice than wanting to. It was as though he, too, had turned on Father but wasn't quite brave enough to truly do anything about it."

Whatever had come between them had completely torn them apart practically over night and was still lingering so it had to be big. But what could it possibly be? What could be big enough to break apart brothers that apparently never spent any time apart? What if they had never fought before? Would they have known how to fix it? Chloe still had so many questions but there were no answers to be found.

"If you going to try to do what I think you are, Chloe, just be careful." Amenadiel said seriously. "Especially with Michael. I would like to say he won't hurt you but the fact is that I don't know him anymore. I don't think anyone does. The only thing I know that has not changed is that he can get reactive when cornered. He has always had a sharp tongue and isn't afraid to use it."

Chloe nodded. She knew that already from their encounter last night but she had her own weapon to take to the fight. Michael knew about it, of course, but she could still use it.

Amenadiel smiled at her. "But if anyone can, it's you, Chloe."

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Chloe had a plan. Should she stay out of this? Yes. Should she let the brothers be? Yes. Was she potentially going to get hurt emotionally and possibly even physically? Most definitely yes, but Chloe couldn't not do anything. Something was bothering her about this whole situation and she was determined to get to the bottom of it. Only hurdle was getting the twins to agree to anything involving the other one. Chloe decided to start with the easiest one first.

Amenadiel had said that it seemed to him that Michael was the one affected the most by whatever happened. So, to her, it made sense that perhaps Lucifer would be the one most likely to have some semblance of willingness to go along with her between the two. Hence, she found her way back to the Devil's fortress.

Lucifer was hanging about Lux when she found him perfectly in his element. She had been slightly surprised that he and Amenadiel practically co-owned the place but she supposed it made an element of sense. Lucifer had made it clear he wasn't interested in spending all his time down in the club anymore so the two had agreed to split it and do alternating nights. Women and men were vying for his attention but Chloe stole it immediately upon him spotting her. Lucifer's bright smile as he made his way up to her took her breath away.

"Detective! What a pleasant surprise." He called over the music once he reached her.

Chloe made note of the women to the side eyeballing him. She shook away the jealousy that settled in the pit of her stomach. "Hey, is it too early for you to come up?"

"For you, never." Lucifer grinned at her. He was so obviously happy. She hated that she was going to burst it with the talk she wanted to have. "Let me talk with Patrick about a few things and I'll be right up. You go ahead."

Her palms started to get a bit damp on her ride up. She rubbed them on her pants as she stepped out. Chloe knew this conversation was not going to be an easy one. Perhaps some liquid courage would help, just enough to settle her nerves. If she thought this one was going to be difficult, if she did somehow get Lucifer to agree, Michael was going to be ten times worse. Lucifer she could somewhat predict by now. Michael was a complete mystery to her. Sure, she could tell if he lied to her but she couldn't predict his moods.

The elevator dinged behind her and she quickly finished her glass with a wince.

"Drinking are we?" Lucifer questioned walking over to her. "That does not bode well."

Chloe took a deep breath. Now or never. "I have a question to ask you. It's sensitive but I want an honest thought out answer, okay."

Lucifer looked over her. Chloe never removed her eyes from his face. He was clearly nervous and reserved but he nodded. "What's your question, Detective?"

"If you could, if you had the chance, would you fix things between you and Michael?"

Lucifer immediately shut off from her. It hurt deeply. Chloe wanted to tell him to forget it but he walked away before she could. She watched him walk out onto the balcony but did not follow him. She had asked him to give her a thought out answer so she needed to give him the space to think about her question. The rest of their conversation depended on his answer anyway.

With nothing left for her to do, other than stand awkwardly while she waited but not willing to completely leave, Chloe decided that a bath may be in order. She had wanted to try out the huge tub she had noticed in his bathroom since she had laid eyes on it. Now seemed like the perfect time; might ease her tight muscles and tense nerves. Chloe sent Lucifer one last concerned look. He had not moved from where he had leaned over the balcony, head tilted downward. A small tendril of smoke drifted above his head. Not for the first time, Chloe wondered if she should just leave well enough alone.

The hot water felt wonderful as she sunk herself down into it. She left the jets off to just soak in the lavender scented water. Chloe could get used to this if she was honest. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes. The mystery before her would not leave her alone. It pulled at her like an unseen force. What had happened? So many possibilities ran through her mind but none of them seemed to fit. She wanted answers, for herself or for the twins she was unclear, but she had promised herself before she came here that she would only proceed if Lucifer wanted to. It was the only way she could see going forward that wouldn't ruin their own new relationship and not harm the brother's shaky one any further. She needed at least Lucifer on her side and willing.

A soft sound had her opening her eyes to find Lucifer standing and watching her from the doorway. Chloe had purposely left it open as invitation if he had so been inclined. He watched her silently, taking her in, but no smirks or flirty gestures were forthcoming. It revealed just how much her question had affected him. Chloe raised her hand in silent invitation to join her. Lucifer still said nothing but he did undress and join her in the still warm water. Chloe would count it as a small step in the right direction.

They sat silently together. Lucifer stared into the water still obviously lost deeply in thought. Chloe waited for him patiently. Her question had not been easy or simple, she knew, but he was taking it seriously just as she had asked him to. It gave her hope. When he did speak, his voice was soft, almost like he was afraid to break the silence between them.

"I am unsure how to answer your question, Detective." He paused. Chloe waited silently for him to continue not wanting to push too hard. "Part of me wants to, yes, but there is another part that may never be able to forgive him."

Chloe nodded. Now that he had said it, she found that she had expected it. "What happened?" She ventured. "Amenadiel said you two had got along."

Lucifer laughed bitterly. "Of course you talked to Amenadiel." He didn't glare at her or blame her. It simply sat as a statement of fact like something he should have expected her to do. He looked at her and his eyes were angry, sad, and confused all at once. "Even I don't know what turned him against me. I thought we were fine. Everything felt fine; it felt good." A haunted expression took over his face. Chloe wanted to reach for him but was unsure how he would react. Perhaps she should let him come to her this time. "It happened so quickly and was so confusing. We fought. None of it made any sense but he was angry and I was angry that he seemed to think I knew why he was angry when I didn't. Of course it spiraled and…and here we are."

Chloe knew he was leaving something big out, but she couldn't for the life of her think what it could be. It had to be the true reason for all of it. "Lucifer?" She tilted her trying to get eye contact with him again. Lucifer avoided her gaze. "What are you leaving out?"

Lucifer tensed. He went from agitated to being a scared animal. He completely turned from her moving to get out of the tub, to leave, to run. The only thing that stopped him was Chloe grabbing his wrist in an attempt to keep him with her. She had overstepped. Badly. Time to backpedal and try to salvage what she could.

"Wait, Lucifer, please. Forget I asked, okay. It's not important."

Slowly, he settled back into the water. Chloe kept hold of him afraid if she let him go he'd try to bolt again. She was so confused. Chloe decided to worry about what happened later. She still needed a clear answer on whether he would attempt to fix things or not.

"Lucifer…"

"I don't know, Detective." Lucifer wriggled his wrist from her grasp to run his hands over his face. "I don't know if I want to fix things or not. I don't even know what it is that needs to be fixed or even if it can be. I never knew and I still don't."

A sob caught in Chloe's throat when he looked at her. He looked wrecked like whatever had happened had broken him. "All I know is that when I reached for him…when I needed him…he let me go. Michael let me fall."

Chloe reached for him. She pressed her forehead against his, her hands cradled his head. Both had their eyes clenched shut. Chloe hoped he could feel the love she was trying to share with him as he clung to her. She understood harshly now why Lucifer had a lack of trust in his twin. Despite their fighting, their arguing, Lucifer had still held hope that Michael would catch him. Lucifer had kept just enough love for his twin to reach for him in his darkest moment only to be let down. Chloe would not be able to imagine the hurt and betrayal that Lucifer had felt.

There was still a small niggle of unease about the whole situation. No one knew what had happened to set Michael on a virtual war path against Lucifer. Even Lucifer didn't know and for it to happen so fast…it was not making sense. It was clear to her though that Lucifer, despite his loss of trust, still held some love for Michael; otherwise, he wouldn't be so torn in his decision. The water had long ago turned cold, but Chloe held Lucifer without protest.

Her thoughts once again turned to Michael despite everything. It seemed Amenadiel was right in that it affected Michael more so than Lucifer. Michael was the younger of the two siblings so jealousy was on the board. All siblings felt jealous of the other at one point in time but it sounded like Lucifer made a point to involve his younger twin in whatever he could. So it may have played a part but Chloe couldn't see it being the main cause. What had tipped the scales for Michael so suddenly?

"I…I want to know what happened." Lucifer suddenly spoke startling Chloe a bit with the break of silence. Lucifer pulled back with a slight apologetic look in her direction before continuing. "I want to know what I did wrong." Lucifer looked down. "It may not fix anything, but I want to know." He looked back up at her his brown eyes held a new determined look. "I'm assuming you have a plan, Detective?"

Chloe smiled softly in understanding. It was true, knowing may not help anything. It may even serve to make things worse, but not knowing was haunting Lucifer enough. Maybe if they found out the truth things might at least settle a bit between them.

"Let's get out of this water, into something warm, and I'll run it by you."
