Talking aloud to self
Phil Collins Singing
A few days later, the primates are busy relaxing and playing with their babies. Tarzana is up to her old tricks again. She hides in some bushes and smirks as she sees Kala eating. With a silent chuckle, she sneaks up behind her so as to not alert her mom to her presence. She gets ready to frighten her mom. As she gets closer, Tarzana deeply inhales to let out a frightening sound. She then holds her breath ready to let loose the horrific sound. Just as she was about to release the noise, Kala speaks up with her back still turned.
Kala: Don't even think about it.
Tarzana lets out the breath she was holding in, a disappointed look on her face. She grabs a vine and swings to sit in front of her mom. Tarzana moans slightly in defeat.
Tarzana: How'd you know it was me?
Kala: I'm your mother, I know everything. (Tarzana uses her leg to pick up one of the fruits and begins to eat it.) Now where have you been?
With her mouth full, she teases her mother a little.
Tarzana: I thought you knew everything.
All of a sudden, Terk now tackles Tarzana and throws her away, making Tarzana laugh. She then turns to her aunt, greeting her.
Terk: Hey, Auntie K, you're looking remarkably groomed today!
Raising a single eyebrow, Kala looks to her niece and speaks with a slightly exasperated tone knowing how some things never change.
Kala: Hello, Terk. Where is your mother?
Terk: Mom's on her way over. I thought I'd go ahead so I could get the drop on Tarzana.
Zuri appears out of the forestry coming to sit by her sister.
Zuri: Morning Kala.
Kala: Morning Zuri.
Zuri: How's Tarzana?
Kala: Oh you'll see.
Zuri looks to her sister in confusion. Just then, Tarzana comes back and tackles Terk away from their parents.
Zuri: I know what you meant now. Those two will never grow up.
Kala: Not a chance.
The sisters laugh amongst themselves catching up while their daughters continue their wrestling match. They tumble in front of Kerchak, who grunts as he shakes his head. The other gorillas know the drill and do their best to avoid them as the two keep on fighting. Soon they roll right into Tantor. Terk calls out in slight pain.
Terk: Not the neck. Not the neck there, T!
Tantor backs away from the two making sure not to step on them.
Tantor: Okay, it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Someone's gonna get hurt here, and it's always me.
Tarzana and Terk keep on fighting, trying to outdo the other. Tarzana swings her leg at Terk pinning her to the ground momentarily as they begin to roll down a hill. Terk tries to stop Tarzana's onslaught by shouting.
Terk: Cramp! Cramp in the calf! (Tarzana manages to hold onto Terk's arms and places them against her head, trapping Terk in a type of chokehold. She laughs with a smirk. After all of the years of training her body to keep up with the gorillas she is finally as strong if not stronger than some of them. Suddenly, her focus is interrupted as she sees some bushes moving. Something is in there. Having trouble breathing Terk tries to get Tarzana's attention.) Okay, okay, you win! Ow, ow! Okay! Okay, you win. Hello? Down here! Yo, yo, let go!
She shakes her head focusing back on what she was doing. Tarzana releases Terk from her grip, apologetic.
Tarzana: Oh, sorry, Terk.
Terk rubs at her neck trying to ease the pain as she breaths in some air deeply.
Terk: I know we like to get rough, but sheesh! What kind of animal are you?
Tarzana doesn't respond, as she gets closer to look at the bushes. Her gaze hardens some at the suspicious bushes. Tantor speaks up, oblivious to what Tarzana is looking at.
Tantor: You know, I've been thinking lately that maybe Tarzana could be some subspecies of elephant.
Terk: What, are you crazy? An elephant?
Tarzana has a cautionary look on her face as she scans the bushes. Terk and Tantor continue to argue, ignoring Tarzana.
Tantor: Listen to me. Think about it. She enjoys a peanut; I enjoy a peanut.
Terk gestures at her cousin.
Terk: She looks nothin' like you!
The bushes stop moving. Deciding it is nothing, the ape woman turns and goes back to her friends. Suddenly, without warning, a growl is heard, and something comes out of the bushes and attacks. It's Sabor! She lunges at Tarzana. The ape woman's friends shriek in alarm as she dodges her attacker. Everyone else hears this, including Kerchak, and go into the trees to hide for shelter. Kerchak stops at the base of the tree he was heading for when he looks back to the commotion. Kala looks towards the noise from her place in the trees scared as she realizes Tarzana is in the direction it came from. Kerchak runs in the direction of the growling knowing that he must protect his family.
Tarzana climbs up a nearby tree with Sabor still after her. Before the creature can get sink her teeth into the flesh inches from her mouth, Kerchak rushes through the forestry. He grabs ahold of the leopard and throws her away from Tarzana. Tarzana moves further up the tree she was climbing and watches from a branch as the silver-back gorilla fights off Sabor. Sabor knocks Kerchak to the ground and pins him. Everyone else watches on other trunks, looking at the fight while Tantor covers his eyes, unwilling to watch this.
Kerchak manages to get Sabor off and continues fighting. Suddenly, Sabor slashes Kerchak on the chest and he roars in pain. Tarzana swiftly climbs up to Terk's trunk, holding her handmade spear. She asks Terk a question whispering so no one else can hear.
Tarzana: Should someone help him?
Terk: This is his fight.
Tarzana: He needs help Terk!
Kerchak continues fighting Sabor while the evil leopard bites the back of his neck. Kerchak tosses the leopard away and falls to the ground exhausted and wounded, making Tarzana gasp in shock. She jumps up from her place in the trees.
Tarzana: I'm going to help him!
Terk: Tarzana! No!
Terk's cries fall upon deaf ears as Tarzana jumps from the branch they were on. Sabor growls as she walks slowly to the downed gorilla leader. Kerchak watches hopelessly as Sabor circles him before running at him to finish him off. Suddenly, Tarzana yells as she swings in and kicks at Sabor, knocking her away from the leader, her spear still in hand. Sabor rolls to her feet as Tarzana stands protectively in front of Kerchak. Kerchak looks to Tarzana in confusion.
Kerchak: Why is she helping me?
The other primates, including Terk, cheer and roar as they watch Tarzana facing off against Sabor. Even though Terk didn't want Tarzana to interrupt the fight she will support her. Kala watches in horror as her daughter goes to face the vicious predator. She had lost her baby years ago, and she doesn't want to lose Tarzana as well.
The two slowly circle one another, keeping an eye for any movement from their opponent. Soon, Sabor roars as she jumps to attack. Tarzana dodges her in time and uses her spear to pole vault into a tree. Sabor growls as she jumps after her. The two fighters climb the tree, with Tarzana using tree-surfing to dodge her opponent's attacks. To her surprise, Sabor catches up swiftly, in hope to take the ape woman down in time. Tarzana can barely dodge her enemy's swift attacks as she keeps on attacking back.
She grabs a vine and uses it to swing around the tree, returning to the trunk she left Sabor at. However, Sabor is nowhere in sight.
Tarzana: Where are you?
As she looks around, she suddenly sees Sabor jump from a higher branch towards her. Tarzana is startled but thinking quick, she uses her spear to defend herself and throws Sabor to the ground, scratching Sabor's forearm, making the crowd roar even more jubilantly than before.
Sabor looks and becomes angry at the scratch on her arm, blood coming out. She looks up and snarls at the one who scratched her. She hisses up at Tarzana who is hanging from the side of the tree, spear pointed outward. Tarzana hisses back at the deadly predator. Tarzana jumps back to the ground as they circle each other once again. Fueled by rage, Sabor lunges and scratches Tarzana on her chest. The slash splayed above her top left breast to the vale between them. Blood seeps from the three marks now on her skin. The crowd goes silent, looking worried now. Kala nerves are shot from worrying about her daughter. Tarzana frowns at the scratches but before she can attack, Sabor jumps towards her, knocking her to the ground. Her spear breaks in the process, sending the spear head to a ground level below them.
Using the wooden part of the spear she has left; Tarzana swiftly uses it to keep herself safe from Sabor as she bites at her. Using all the strength she has, Tarzana kicks Sabor off her, throwing her away. Tarzana flips to her stomach as she examines her spear and cringes. She gets up just as Sabor rises to attack her once more. Tarzana ditches the broken spear and jumps into the tree below. She proceeds to jump down to some trunks nearby while Sabor jumps after her. Tarzana quickly moves into the woven branches of the tree acting as a temporary wooden shield. Sabor snarls in anger as she slashes at Tarzana, who keeps dodging her from within. She knows that Sabor will reach her eventually.
Tarzana: Come on Tarzana! Think! How can I get out of here?
She then sees spear head on the ground below. An idea comes to her head as she is about to go to it. Sabor abruptly appears in the hole she is about to exit and frightens her, forcing her to back off while Sabor keeps slashing into the trunk, trying to get her.
Tarzana: Ok. I can do this! I just need to slow her down for a bit.
Finding a rock, Tarzana grabs it and shoves it in the hole where Sabor's paw is, making her yowl in pain and get trapped at the same time. She tries to get her paw free. Tarzana sees her chance and begins to climb out of the trunks. Sabor sees Tarzana and slashes at her, but the ape woman gets out of the way and makes her way to the ground level below, running for her spear head. Sabor finally manages to pull herself free and chases Tarzana. The two in a race against one another, Tarzana for her weapon and Sabor for Tarzana. Just as Tarzana makes it to the ground and gets ahold of her spear her, Sabor tackles her, sending the two into a moss covered hole nearby. The sound of fighting is heard until it suddenly stops.
The gorillas wait in trepidation, wondering what just happened. Rustling is heard from the hole causing all of the gorillas to try to get a closer look from their places in the trees. Kala and Terk are seen with tears in their eyes as hopelessness consumed them. Tantor gently bites his trunk in worry. Suddenly, a figure comes out of the hole. It's Sabor. The gorillas look in fear believing that she killed Tarzana. Kala has a look of devastation believing that her daughter was killed just like her son many years ago to the deadly leopard. Terk hugs her aunt in comfort.
However, they notice that Sabor isn't moving, but in reality someone is carrying her out. It's Tarzana, alive and well. The ape woman drops the remains of the enemy on the ground next to her as she climbs out. She stands on shaky legs from overexertion and slight blood loss. The gorillas cheer wildly while Kala and Terk sigh in relief. The two grin down at the ape woman. After all this time Sabor is dead and the entire jungle is safe from her deadly reign.
Tarzana looks up and sees the cheering she's getting. The gorillas are cheering for her, for the first time ever. Unlike when she was a child and they'd all look at her as a pest and annoyance, the clan now look to her in admiration. With a determined look, she picks up Sabor's dead body and yells in the same fashion she did as a girl, only this time even better than before sounding more mature. She holds her victory kill above her head high. This causes the gorillas to cheer even more wildly and emotionally. They begin to climb down to their new hero with Tantor walking to her. He lets off a victory trumpet as the other gorillas congratulate her. Terk rushes from the tree down to her cousin. Kala takes her time coming down still shaken from the ordeal. She is the last one to climb down but has a proud smile on her face. Although Tarzana may not know it, but by killing Sabor, she has avenged her real parents and her adoptive parents' son.
As the gorillas crowd around Tarzana, making a spectacle out of it, a baby gorilla jumps on Tarzana and plays with her hair. Terk pushes her way through the crowd to stand by her cousin. She calls out to the crowd for them to move.
Terk: Okay, everybody, move aside, out of my way, best friend and older cousin coming through. That would be me. (She then turns to Tarzana.) And you, don't make a habit of that, okay? (Terk then whispers her next words so only Tarzana can hear.) Aunt Kala and I were so worried. You better not try something like that again! (Tarzana nods slightly as Terk goes back to speaking up.) There are other ways of getting attention, you know?
Tarzana laughs happily at her cousins antics, how Terk can go from overprotective to teasing.
Tarzana: I'll try to remember that!
Terk: All right, and I was right behind you...
Kala walks up to her daughter and hugs her tight. She then pulls her away from the crowd and whispers into Tarzana's ear so the two can have a silent conversation.
Kala: Don't scare me like that again! I thought I lost you.
Tarzana: I'm sorry Mama. I just couldn't stand by and let Father get hurt.
Kala sighs in defeat knowing how protective her daughter is.
Kala: I know. (Tarzana hissed in pain a little.) Lets head over to the watering hole to clean you up.
Tarzana: Mama, it doesn't even hurt. It's just a scratch. (Kala raises an eyebrow at her daughter. Tarzana deflates a little.) Ok, it may hurt a little.
Kala smirks in victory as her daughter pouts at her mom's look.
Kala: I thought so. Come with me.
Kala drags her daughter to a nearby watering hole. She guides Tarzana to sit on a rock.
Kala: Sit here I'll be back.
Tarzana shakes her head loving at her mom's mother-henning. Kala walks over to a nearby tree and grabs a leaf off of it. She heads to the edge of the water and dunks the leaf in it. Kala goes to head back over to Tarzana with the now wet leaf. On her way back she sees an Aspilla africana plant and grabs it before stopping in front of her daughter. Tarzana takes the wet leaf and wipes away the blood from the scratches. Kala takes the plant she grabbed and crushes it in her hands making a paste. She lifts her hand up to the cuts as she warns Tarzana.
Kala: This may sting a little.
Kala places the crushed plant on Tarzana's cuts. Tarzana inhales sharply from the contact.
Kala: How is that?
Tarzana's voice squeaks out some in pain, but she can start to feel the cooling sensation.
Tarzana: Better!
Kala: You should be more careful.
Kala scolds as she keeps putting on more of the plant.
Tarzana: I know, I know. I was just scared and worried.
Kala: I understand. Just think before you go after a predator ok.
Tarzana: I will Mama.
The two head back to the nesting grounds after their talk. As they walk back to the clan, we catch the end of Tarzana and Kala conversation.
Tarzana: It's fine. (She gently removes her hair from her hidden scratches.) Better a few scratches than being dead.
Kala: I'm just glad that you both are ok. Though I think Kerchak's ego may be a little bruised.
With that said, Tarzana looks up and sees Kerchak, who had watched the fight and was waiting for her return. The gorilla frowns as he begins to leave. Tarzana has a thoughtful look to her face. She has an idea so as to give Kerchak a gift.
Kerchak stops his retreat when he hears someone climbing up towards him. He sees Tarzana coming to him carrying Sabor's dead body. As Kala, Terk and the other gorillas come to watch the father-daughter interaction, Tarzana sets the body in front of the gorilla in respect to her father. Kerchak looks speechless and regretful. The ape woman was able to do something he has never done; she killed the one predator that took the life of his son. This time when he looks at her it is not the same frown he usually gives her. For the first time ever, he actually begins to respect the girl. Tarzana grins, knowing that maybe Kerchak will eventually accept her as one of the clan and his daughter. The gorilla is about to speak to her when a noise is heard far away, alarming everyone. Tarzana speaks her thoughts.
Tarzana: What was that?
Tantor: Hey, it wasn't me. I swear! Okay, maybe it was...
Tarzana looks in the direction of the noise curiously.
Kerchak: Everyone! Let's move.
Kerchak turns to leave but not before looking back to Tarzana once more. The other gorillas begin to follow him. Whatever made that sound may be coming their way. Tarzana pauses but hears the noise again. She looks puzzled. She hasn't heard anything like that before. She wonders what it is and where it comes from. Looking conflicted she decides to see what the noise is. What she doesn't know is that by doing so, she is about to come face-to-face with her destiny.
