Chapter 1: Attack on Hallowe'en

It was a cold Hallowe'en night with bad weather and in a village called Godric's Hollow, the parents of a 15-month-old child were enjoying their time together in the living room of a small cottage belonging to the Potter family.

The father was waving his wand around, producing some grey clouds of smoke, which the boy was eagerly trying to hit with his fists and blow away, while his mother just smiled and said "You know, James, Harry's magic seems to flow inside him, unlike anything I have ever seen. Look closely, there seems to be an aura consisting of scarlet, navy-blue, yellow, emerald-green, and purplish dotted black parts shimmering around him, which, at his age is unheard of. Although the aura is barely visible, his magic is quite strong, considering that he is changing the colour of the smoke from grey to white with his fists upon touching it, while when his breath parts the clouds of smoke they seem to take the form of our faces, along with Remus' and Sirius' faces." "Oh Lily, your observations are interesting. Now that you told me, I see it as well-", James began but was soon interrupted by a cracking noise coming from outside and they felt the wards around the house starting to fail.

"Lily, wake up Remus and Sirius from their slumber. They are in the guest room next to Harry's room. I will fight Voldemort. I'm assuming it is him because he is the only one who would come here at this time without informing us.", James said, picking up his wand, which he had previously dropped, shocked by the sound of apparition coming from outside and the wards starting to fail around them. He strode up to a corner, from where he had a good view of the door and a free line of fire towards it, while also being protected by the corner.

He knew that he was quite strong, though there was no chance of him defeating Voldemort. However, he was ready to die to protect his family and friends and hold that monster off for long enough to secure some time for them to get away or follow their plans. "Screw you, Peter!", he cursed, as he began to place charms on the door to hold Voldemort off for, hopefully, 20 seconds, or, with a lot of luck, maybe even for a minute. Yet, every second he gained was for their advantage.

Meanwhile, Lily was running upstairs and woke up both Remus and Sirius. "Guys, James is holding off Voldemort. We need to get into action. I will place some safety charms on Harry. I suspect Voldemort to have placed some Anti-Apparition-, as well as Anti-Portkey wards around the place. Take them down. Peter betrayed us. I will get revenge on the traitor, while Dumbledore will come here soon and leave Harry with the Dursleys. I know they will treat him badly, but that could be circumstances, under which Harry might be able to unleash his magic best, while learning to control it, before even going to Hogwarts. Remus, please keep an eye on him over the following years. My last act as a living person will be to perform a ritual to transfer all my knowledge, everything I am able to do, as well as my magical core into Harry, which will kill me. I hope that this will save him from that snake-faced bastard." "No, Lily. That git is a Death Eater, who should not get his hands on you. You are worth too much for him to kill you. I will get that bastard Peter, while Remus takes down the wards and leaves. You will perform that ritual quickly. I don't want to lose you, but I think that it is better for you to die together with James, while protecting Harry with the ritual, instead of Dumbles getting you and turning you into his Horcrux." The moment Sirius told him to, Remus started taking down the wards Voldemort had placed. "You know that you are far too young to die, Lily, but we know Dumbledore's plans and I will watch over Harry while giving him the chance to unleash his magic while also not making Albus suspicious of my activities. Sirius, please be careful. You know that you will probably end up in Azkaban, accused of murder or something similar. Dumbledore will do nothing to help you. The wards are down. I will put Harry in his crib. Good luck, the two of you. Lily, you were an amazing woman and I'll make sure for your legacy to continue through Harry. Sirius, remember that you are innocent and that Peter was the traitor. With that in mind, you should be able to not go insane while you are in Azkaban. Until we unite once again." And with those words, Remus was given Harry and he went to the boy's room, placing him in his crib, before apparating to an unknown location. "The git! I will kill him. Lily, thank you for your friendship. Greet James from me." With those words Lily was left alone and started waving her wand and her free hand in complex motions, muttering incantations.

Downstairs, Voldemort threw a Bombarda into the door, which had already held him off for 50 seconds, shattering it along with the rest of the spells James had placed on it. He calmly walked into the house and saw no one. Deflecting a nonverbal Stupefy from a corner, he threw a Confringo at the corner, from which the stunner had come. James jumped backwards mere moments before the curse inflicted upon the wall, blasting it into pieces, while large pieces of the wall landed on the ground where he had just jumped away from. "You won't harm my family, bastard!" he shouted, getting only a high-pitched, cruel laugh before he got hit with the Cruciatus-Curse. Unimaginable pain was soaring through his body, pain, unlike anything he had ever felt before. Every nerve in his body seemed to be on fire, while, with every ounce of willpower and strength he could muster, he kept standing and tried to not give Voldemort the satisfaction of screaming from what he was feeling, his body twitching in pain. The moment he heard a cry from Lily, indicating that she had started performing the ancient ritual, for which they had been preparing, he threw himself away, freeing himself from the curse. Refocussing on his opponent, he cast a Protego, blocking two of the three cutting curses heading towards him and bending out of the third one's way. James then cast three nonverbal, yet strong cutting curses with his wand, while simultaneously throwing two blasting curses wandlessly, which the Dark Lord sidestepped or blocked with his shield charm. Giving Voldemort no time to get back at him, he threw a series of Stupefy, Confringo, and some fire-producing charms at the snake-faced idiot, who just rolled under most of them, standing up, sidestepping a Conjunctivitis, and shielding himself from the rest of the curses that he couldn't get away from in time. Voldemort then cast an Avada Kedavra, which James responded to, by conjuring a marble wall to intersect the path of the vibrant green Killing Curse. The wall burst apart and James blast apart the rubble coming in his direction. "James, you could have been strong, respected, grown to become one of my most powerful servants, yet you chose your place as a lapdog of the old, muggle-loving fool. Such a waste of a Pureblood. I am sorry that you have to die, but you are standing in my way. I just wanted to kill your child, but you chose to fight me." Voldemort declared, throwing two Killing Curses in quick succession. "You will not lay a hand on my wife and son. Accio vase." With that, a vase intersected the first Killing Curse, but James didn't see the second one until it was too late to do anything about it.

"Lily, Harry, I am sorry! Padfoot, Moony, Prongs out!" he exclaimed before the curse hit him. His lifeless body hit the ground with a thud. If one looked closely, one could see a look in his eyes, saying that he was sorry and that he wore a smile on his face. "Such a shame", Voldemort muttered, heading upstairs.

While the two wizards were duelling downstairs, Lily finished the safety charms on Harry and started with the ritual. She called out "Fiddy!" and with a silent pop, a house elf appeared. "What is Mistress Lily wanting Fiddy to do?" "Please bond Harry to anything the Potters own. Both James and me will die tonight. Please don't come for him and let him stay where he will be placed. He will be able to come to you if he is in trouble, but only if he is bonded to Potter belongings, like the house elves, Potter Manor, or anything similar." "Master and Mistress Potter will die tonight? But they must not. They are too great to die.", the elf burst out, crying. "Fiddy, please calm down. There is nothing to do about it, but we need Harry to survive! If Harry dies, all hope is lost, this family will be extinct and all of you will be free!", Lily said, trying to explain the importance of the bonding to the elf. "Fiddy, you will please bond Harry as I said, then leave and tell all of our elves to wait for Harry to come for them. I will kill myself to protect Harry with an ancient ritual, and also ensure his survival, but also make sure, that he is able to know where he can find you!" After Lily ordered Fiddy to bond Harry to Potter belongings, Fiddy did so, with tears in her eyes, knowing their kind master and mistress would die. When Fiddy finished her Task, she gave one last bow to Lily and disapparated.

The instant the elf had left, Lily began with the ritual. They knew they would have to perform it at some point, so they had had everything set up next to Harry's crib. She knew the ritual by heart and started performing the spells, muttering the text of the ritual, carving the runes, doing the correct movements with her hands and wand as well as continuously feeling love towards Harry, placing her trust in Harry, and being selfless. The moment she had commenced with the ritual, only her voice would have an effect on it.

She was nearly finished and just needed to exclaim her love, sacrifice, and helplessness to finish the ritual. She heard Voldemort closing in on the room she was locked inside, meaning James was dead. She felt devastated at knowing that her husband had died and that his murderer was about to face her, while she needed to finish the ritual, killing herself, while protecting Harry in the process. Yet she reminded herself that she had to stay calm to sort her priorities and not fail the ritual.

Voldemort opened the door carefully and entered the room. "Step aside mudblood, I am supposed to let you live. I just want to kill the baby behind you.", Voldemort sneered, trying to listen to Severus' desperate wish. "There is no way in hell that I will hand you my son. I love him more than anything else. Kill me instead! I beg you to just kill me instead and let Harry survive.", she pleaded in a helpless tone. "I said step aside, Lily. I warned you, but you continued to stand in my way." With that an emerald-green Avada Kedavra made its way towards her and with a muttered "Lily Potter's, née Evans, sacrifice for the ancient ritual to protect Harry James Potter.", were her last words before she died, knowing she had succeeded in fooling Voldemort and saving her son's life. The moment she finished, a green beam impacted her, bathing the room in a bright green. Because of the bright green of the curse, he had killed her with, he couldn't see the white glow that shimmered around the boy for a few moments. He never realised, that he wasn't the one to kill her, or that she had performed a ritual to protect her son and because of his ignorance, he made his way over to the crying boy, the white light had already disappeared.

"Avada Kedavra" he yelled, happy about finally ridding the world of the Potter family. Upon impact, the curse just rebounded and shot back towards him, but since he was standing right above the crib and not expecting something like this to happen, he dropped his wand, before his body exploded into dust. He knew he wasn't dead, considering the five Horcruxes he had made, but his current state was horrible, so he got away as fast as he could, thinking of the forests of Albania. He needed to regain a body. He was frustrated that he was stupid enough, not to think about potential protections that could have been placed upon the child.

After that some grey smoke seemed to attach itself to the child, entering through his forehead, while the boy started to scream in pain. After the thing was fully inside Harry's head, a lightning-shaped scar where the thing entered his head was the only visible mark of something odd happening.

About an hour and a half later, in Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, a cat was sitting on the side of the path leading to the house with the number four on it. A man in purplish robes with twinkling stars on them apparated to the corner of the street, pulling out a silvery object and clicking it 12 times, with it sucking one of the 12 lights in the street into it at every click. He then walked up to the cat, tucking his long, white beard into his belt, while it was reflecting the moonlight to some extent. His long hair had the same colour and was wound around his belt at the back. His bright, light blue eyes shone behind his half-moon spectacles. "Good evening, Minerva. I hope that you had a good day." were his first words to the cat, who just jumped up and transformed into an elderly woman wearing light green robes. "It is nice seeing you here, Albus, but, if I may ask, where is the boy? Didn't you say that you would bring him here?" came the response from the stern-faced witch. "It seems that I should have been more precise on what I said. I asked Hagrid to get the boy here." "Are you sure that that is a thing you can entrust Hagrid with?" "I would trust Hagrid with my life, Minerva. Also, it seems that he is about to arrive.", Dumbledore defended Rubeus Hagrid, the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and with a loud roar from the sky, a blue motorcycle landed on the street about 10 yards away from the two. "Professor Dumbledore, the ride was good and here yeh are." The man, looking twice as tall as a normal man and about five times as wide, said, while stepping down from the motorbike. "Thank you very much, Hagrid. Now, where do I have the letter again?" The wizard named Albus Dumbledore said the last part to himself, putting his hand into a pocket, the size of a hand, on his robe. The hand went deeper and deeper until he was bending sideways, which at his age of 100 years was a remarkable feat, half of his arm inside his pocket. "I got it," he told the two in front of him, pulling a letter out of his pocket.

"Albus, you cannot mean to explain everything about the Potters in a single letter. You've got to give the muggles an explanation. A letter is not enough!", the witch, Minerva McGonagall, nearly yelled out. "I will have to. Don't worry. He will have a good childhood with a family that loves him." Dumbledore responded, placing some blocks and limitations on his magical core to ensure, that there wouldn't be any devastating occurrences with accidental magic. With that, he walked the path towards number four, Privet Drive and placed the blanket with the boy inside it onto the doormat of the house.

"Good luck, Harry. I will happily await you at Hogwarts and make you my Golden Boy", Albus thought, before saying goodbye to the other two, pulling out his Deluminator, and clicking it once to send back all of the streetlights, before disapparating from Privet Drive. Hagrid stepped back onto his motorcycle and made his way back to Hogwarts. Minerva then disapparated as well, shortly before the sun began to rise on the horizon.
