Emmett sat in front with me smug about being able to beat Alice Jasper to the front seat. My brooding copper headed brother opted to go solo.
Arriving at our school's parking lot, people gawked at our red AMG Mercedes. There was a buzz of excitement in school I couldn't put my finger on it might be because of the up coming dance but a maybe something else, any how I'd find out soon.
I figured I might as well focus on classes sitting next to Vera she was nervously awaiting last week's maths test. "Relax Vera! You aced this, we studied hard for this remember? Me, you Jack." I said. Vera sighed "Well come on you know Maths isn't my forte, it's more English, Spanish French that I excel in. You Jack got a handle on this." Answering her "Come on Vera. If Jack the slacker can up his grades with study sessions with little effort you can too."
The slacker I'm referring to is the guy (Vera's long time class mate since middle school) with a rep for doing the absolute bare minimum only that, unless he had really good reason to work hard. He has this shaggy hair wore practical clothes that looked like he just stepped out of bed which he some how managed to carry it off with a certain charming devil may care demeanor. When push comes to shove he pulls through especially for Vera.
The time I've gotten to know him I realized his air being an of ambivalent sloth was a façade hide reluctance of setting up expectations he can't meet.
Speak of the devil, the said slacker made his way to Vera me. "Damn girl! Saw you with that red Merc, like what did you do? How's it drive?" Jack enquired. As I was about to answer, Vera preemptively replied. "Oh hello to you too." sarcastically greeted. "Anyhow how'd you do on the test?" Jack held the paper nonchalantly to show he obtained an "A" for the test. Vera smiled congratulated him, Jack tried to make lite of it but the corners of his mouth twitched a tiny bit at gaining Vera's approval.
"I guess those sessions weren't too much of a drag. You should come home do another one soon." Vera faced me with me a bemused confusion at Jack's sudden studiousness to see my trying to hard to stifle a laugh at his veiled attempt to get a ride in my new car. Everyone stopped their conversions as our class lessons began.
